NEW LIBRARY OF CONGRESS MAGAZINE DEBUTS

WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 — The Library of Congress issued the following
news release:

The new Library of Congress Magazine (LCM) debuts this week. The
bi-monthly, general-interest magazine features educational and
entertaining content about both current and historical events.

“Like our online offerings and exhibitions, the new magazine pulls the
Library’s amazing collections off the shelves and out of the archive
boxes, bringing information, images and history together in an
entertaining and informative package,” said Gayle Osterberg, the
Library’s director of communications and executive editor. “LCM will
be an important channel for communicating the full breadth and scope
of the Library’s mission, its expert staff, its collections and its
myriad services to Congress and to the nation.”

LCM is the next-generation publication of a Library magazine that
began circulation as a mimeographed staff newsletter during World War
II. The transformed magazine, which will publish six issues per year,
has been re-imagined to better serve contemporary audiences with
information about upcoming programs and more general-interest features
that inspire research and learning.

“The story of the Library is told in this first issue of our new
‘Library of Congress Magazine,'” said Librarian of Congress James H.
Billington. “We hope you will like our new magazine, and that it will
lead you to explore the millions of books, manuscripts, photos,
movies, maps and music in our collection, either in-person or online.”

In the cover story, readers will learn how, out of the ashes of the
nascent congressional library-which was burned by the British during
the War of 1812-has grown the world’s largest repository of knowledge.
Feature stories explore how the Library acquires its collection-now
comprising more than 151 million items-and mark the centennial of
copyright protection for films.

In regular departments such as “How Do I?”; “Online Offerings”; “For
You at the Library”; “Shop the Library” and “Support the Library”
readers will be given information such as how to use the Library and
its resources; see what’s new online and for sale in the Library’s
Shop, including new Library publications; find out about events they
can attend (or view as webcasts) and exhibitions they can view in
person and online; and learn how donors support the nation’s library.

Each issue is beautifully illustrated with historic images drawn from
the Library’s collections and contemporary photographs. The premier
issue includes a copy of the “Star-Spangled Banner” signed by composer
Francis Scott Key, Armenian medieval manuscripts, presidential
campaign posters and contemporary images of Library people and places.

The magazine’s circulation of 12,000 includes Members of Congress and
libraries and educational institutions throughout the nation and the
world. The publication is also accessible free online at

The Library of Congress, the nation’s oldest federal cultural
institution and the largest library in the world, holds more than 151
million items in various languages, disciplines and formats. The
Library seeks to spark imagination and creativity and to further human
understanding and wisdom by providing access to knowledge through its
magnificent collections, programs, publications and exhibitions. Many
of the Library’s rich resources can be accessed through its website at

Film: My Uncle Rafael Opens in Mission Valley

ScoopSanDiego.com, CA

My Uncle Rafael Opens in Mission Valley

The family comedy My Uncle Rafael opens tonight at the AMC Mission
Valley 20 theatres as well as Horton Plaza Downtown. The award-winning
film stars Missi Pyle (The Artist, Charlie & the Chocolate Factory),
John Michael Higgins (Yes Man, TVs `Happily Divorced’), Anthony Clark
(Yes, Dear), Joe Lo Truglio (Role Models) and Rachel Blanchard (Road
Trip).

Directed by former Steven Spielberg protégé Marc Fusco, the film
introduces Armenian stage and TV star Vahik Pirhamzei whose successful
stage play featuring the Uncle Rafael character served as the
inspiration for the movie. This is the first American comedy to have
an Armenian lead character.

My Uncle Rafael follows a dysfunctional all-American family who is
cast in a reality television show and must invite a stranger into
their home – in this case an old Armenian uncle, who has one week to
save them from falling apart. The film will open in several major
cities in its opening weekend and then expand from there.

Mission Valley News spoke to Fusco about his start in Hollywood. `I
was very lucky, I walked onto a movie lot and got into an elevator
with a total stranger,’ said Fusco. `I introduced myself as an
aspiring film maker and he offered me an internship; just like that!’
As an intern, Fusco had many responsibilities, one being to re-read
rejected screenplays to confirm that they did indeed suck. They
usually did, but one screenplay had Fusco waving a red flag to anyone
who would pay attention because he considered it good. Nobody paid
attention and eventually another studio bought the rights and that
movie became The Shawshank Redemption.

Later, he got to work with Spielberg which gave him the experience and
confidence to break out on his own. My Uncle Rafael is Fusco’s second
film and it took him two years to shop the film and get it released.
Fusco says this is normal for an independent filmmaker who has to have
his film shown at film festivals across the country to try and land a
distributor. Opens in San Diego, Los Angeles, New York and Toronto
this weekend.

Film: My Uncle Rafael

The New York Times
September 21, 2012 Friday
Late Edition – Final

My Uncle Rafael

By NICOLAS RAPOLD

At first glance, the kindly, bearish oldster who headlines ”My Uncle
Rafael” suggests broad comedy straight ahead: age makeup, cardigan,
hat with feather, jokes about an adult E.S.L. class. But Vahik
Pirhamzei’s Armenian title character, adapted from his stage routines,
turns out to be a sweet and often funny creation: a well-meaning,
lumbering family man from the old country who dispenses advice and
proudly dons a uniform to serve coffee at his daughter’s shop.

This walking ethnic type, familiar but grounded in specific gestures
and rhythms, is unfortunately mired in a hokey story with a needless
reality-show overlay. A budding young producer (Rachel Blanchard)
persuades Rafael to star in her first project, a TV pilot about an
Armenian uncle who must help a soon-to-be-divorced couple; the woman
is about to remarry a sketchy lawyer.

Rafael, who is universally tolerated or beloved, works to solve
everyone’s concerns, preaches the importance of love and
responsibility and reconnects with his go-getter son (also played by
Mr. Pirhamzei). The cast is a professional bunch with recognizable
faces (Missi Pyle as the woman, Joe Lo Truglio as a priest). But ”My
Uncle Rafael” stumbles over forced plotting and setups and falls prey
to its hero’s avuncular mushiness.

”My Uncle Rafael” is rated PG-13 (Parents strongly cautioned) for
language and sexual references.

Opens on Friday in Manhattan. Directed by Marc Fusco 1 hour 42 minutes

Progress in Armenia’s IT sector possible, says specialist

Progress in Armenia’s IT sector possible, says specialist

tert.am
16:57 – 21.09.12

Pavel Barseghyan, a former vice president of Numetrics Management
Systems, Inc., thinks his projects can boost the development of
Armenia’s IT industries.

At a news conference on Friday, he said his methods, experience and
expertise in the world market demands can make the implementation of
different business project relating to the sector possible.

`Building up such a business will help create jobs not only for IT
specialists, but also physicists, mathematicians, engineers,
economists, psychologists and other professionals who are unemployed
today,’ he said.

Barseghyan, who was the US company’s deputy director for scientific
affairs and innovative technologies between 1999 and 2011, said the IT
sector needs a serious state intervention and assistance as a key
branch of modern industries and business.

`There are foreign IT companies operating in Armenia, but the money
they bring are not for Armenia’s benefit. It is necessary to be able
to create companies which will manufacture products we will be able to
export,’ he added. `But to do that we need cooperation with the
Diaspora – apart from a state assistance – because we may have a very
good product and yet be unable to sell it outside Armenia.’

Asked how much is needed to bring the projects to life, Barseghyan did
not specify any sum, saying only that it depends on the product’s
features and the consumer’s demands.
