Ankara: The Us Presidential Election And Turkey

THE US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION AND TURKEY

Today’s Zaman
Oct 31 2012
Turkey

by SUAT KINIKLIOÄ~^LU

Despite brave attempts by the Turkish media to draw attention to the
upcoming presidential election in the US, there is little interest
in next week’s election here.

Part of it is due to the heavy domestic agenda, but part of it is
due to the Turkish belief that nothing will change vis-a-vis Turkey
regardless of who wins next Tuesday.

Four years ago, this was not the case. Barack Obama stirred
considerable attention throughout the globe with the expectation that
he would correct the many excesses committed during the Bush era. Most
of that excitement has subsided, and it is difficult to describe in a
nutshell what the Obama presidency actually meant. True, he has had
to grapple with one of the most challenging economic crises the US
has seen. True, the US political system is bitterly divided and is
no longer the land of compromise. Yet, there was something missing
in the Obama presidency that few can describe.

Regardless of who wins on Tuesday, the fact is that many Turks gauge US
presidents on how they treat the Palestinian question and the larger
Muslim world. This has much to do with the foreign policy emphasis of
the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) on the Middle East and the
Muslim world. In the old days, it would be the Kurdistan Workers’ Party
(PKK) issue or the Armenian issue that would shape Turkish perceptions
of US presidents. While such issues still carry significance, they
no longer occupy center stage in public perceptions. I underline
public perceptions here. While there is some concern about the
neo-conservatives around presidential candidate Mitt Romney, most Turks
are not losing sleep over this and tend to believe in the educating
nature of holding presidential responsibility. If Obama is re-elected,
the current government in Turkey will be relieved, as it sees Prime
Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s personal relationship with President
Obama as a guarantee in maintaining good relations. As they say in
Washington, the best lobbyist in Washington is the White House!

There are also some problematic areas that pertain to the Syrian
crisis as well as other issues in the Middle East. First of all, it
is becoming increasingly clear in Ankara that US policy on Syria is
unlikely to change even after the election. Turkey’s current policy
adjustments are a testament to that recognition. Second, there are
tremendously complicated issues awaiting Turkey, such as relations
with Iraq, the whole of the Kurdish question — both domestic and
regional — and the continuing turmoil in Syria. Friction over how
to deal with intelligence issues surrounding the PKK question have
already surprised many in Washington. Iran will continue to loom as
a challenge for as long as it continues with its nuclear program.

Surprisingly little attention has been extended to the Armenian issue
in this presidential race. A potential crisis awaiting Turkish-American
relations will be the commemoration of the Armenian tragedy in
2015. The new president will have to grapple with an unhappy Turkish
government on this issue. Given the intensity of the race, I would not
be surprised if Romney promises to recognize the “Armenian genocide”
this week. Obama has already demonstrated how he will deal with the
issue. Not much would change there, but the possibility of Obama being
more forthcoming on this issue in 2015 cannot be totally excluded.

If Romney wins, the tension between Turkey and Israel could take on
a different nature. I predict that a Romney administration would urge
Turkey to agree to an Israeli solution to the current impasse.

Needless to say, this would strain bilateral relations.

Next Tuesday, the American people will elect a new president. Whoever
wins the race is likely to continue to the gradual withdrawal of the US
from the Middle East. Apart from its unwavering support for Israel,
the US will seek to manage its gradual shift of attention to the
Pacific. What that means for Turkey and the region remains to be seen.

Baku: Mp: No Assurance That Any Australian State Informed Of Events

MP: NO ASSURANCE THAT ANY AUSTRALIAN STATE INFORMED OF EVENTS IN AZERBAIJAN

Trend
Oct 31 2012
Azerbaijan

There is no assurance that any state of Australia has information
about the events taking place in Azerbaijan and the region, MP Azay
Guliyev told Trend, attitude toward the information released by the
Armenian media about the alleged recognition of separatist “Nagorno
Karabakh Republic” by Australian state of New South Wales.

The information released by the Armenian media about the alleged
recognition of separatist “Nagorno Karabakh Republic” by Australian
state of New South Wales is not true, Guliyev said.

This document is not associated with the recognition of the separatist
“Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

He noted that the Armenians, using the lack of information, are
working in the most remote parts of the world and try to deceive
representatives of central and local government, as well as individual
leaders.

The Armenians by giving false and baseless facts are trying to convince
them that the alleged Nagorno-Karabakh is an independent state, and
they should support the right to self-determination of people living
there, Guliyev said.

As for the legal side of the issue, it has no foundation and is
illegal approach.

“No area can determine the right to self-determination of the
population of the other. There are norms of international law, UN
documents, and the Helsinki Final Act for this,” Guliyev said.

City Lad Shines At International Astronomy Olympiad

CITY LAD SHINES AT INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMY OLYMPIAD
by Payal Gwalani

The Times of India
October 30, 2012 Tuesday

NAGPUR: A boy belonging to the city soared high earning himself a gold
medal at the International Astronomy Olympiads held in South Korea
recently. Arindam Bhattacharya, currently studying in Bangalore,
was the part of a three-member team that represented the country to
the Olympiad. The team bagged three medals – one gold and two silvers.

The team that also had Seshaansh Agrawal of Jaipur and Ayush Kumar of
Jodhpur, competed with children from 22 countries making up 17 teams in
the junior and 16 teams in the senior group. Union ministry of culture,
National Council of Science Museums, Nehru Science Centre and Homi
Bhabha Centre for Science Education were among the organizations that
supported the team. Arindam’s score was 58.2 out of a possible 88,
putting him very close to the highest scorer Grevorg Martirosyan from
Armenia who scored 59 points.

“The Olympiads are not just some competition but a platform for
sharing ideas among people of different nationalities who have similar
interests. The selection procedure, that is a three-tier process in
India, is also a tough one,” said Arindam. Those wishing to compete
internationally first need to appear for the National Standard
examination conducted by Indian Association of Physics Teachers. The
top 300 scorers of the examination qualify for the Indian National
Astronomy Olympiad which also consists of a three-week camp at the
Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education, Mumbai. The top three
performers of the camp can represent the country at the Olympiads.

Despite not being taught in school, Arindam developed interest in the
subject after a chance reading of Stephen Hawking’s ‘A Brief History
of Time’. “I started reading more about astronomy after that. Later,
I came across the information about the Olympiad and was determined
to participate. So, I began preparing for it. It was only after
having studied one year that I attempted the first examination,”
he said. He believes the subject should be introduced at high school
level as it helps develop independent thinking and problem solving
ability of a student.

The subject, Arindam believes has not got its due importance. “We
do not have astronomy as a subject in school. Most of us don’t even
know the basics of the subject,’ rued Arindam who wishes to take up
nuclear engineering for his undergraduate studies. “This is because,
we have reached a stage where we can no longer depend on traditional
sources of energy and nuclear power,” he said.

Berlin: Cool Reception For Erdogan In Berlin

COOL RECEPTION FOR ERDOGAN IN BERLIN

Die Welt
Oct 30 2012
Germany

The Alawites in Germany will stand by a promise they made earlier:
“As soon as Tayyip Erdogan sets his foot on German soil again,
we will be there to protest,” Ali Dogan, Secretary General of the
Alawite Community in Germany, said. “We will no longer tolerate that
Europe regards this brute as a democrat.”

This is the promise that Dogan had given 50,000 people with Turkish
roots in March. At the time, the Alawites protested against Erdogan
together with Kurds, Armenians, and Turkish social democrats in
Bochum. The protests then were provoked by the announcement that
Erdogan was intended to be the recipient of the Steiger Award,
honouring humanity and tolerance. Just as then, Dogan is certain
that Erdogan is a “flawless anti-democrat.” Erdogan and his party
violate human rights and cover up the organizers and perpetrators of
the massacre of Alawites in Sivas in 1993. Dogan explained: “People
of different faiths and critical journalists are victimized and held
in arbitrary detention in Turkey.” [passage omitted]

Erdogan likes to use his trips to Germany for election campaign
purposes. In a speech given in 2008, he told 20,000 compatriots taking
part in an event in Cologne that assimilation was “a crime against
humanity.” It now seems to be time again for thousands of Alawites
to give vent to their anger. Erdogan will come to Berlin to attend
the opening of the Turkish Embassy, the largest representation Turkey
has abroad. On Wednesday [ 31 October], Angela Merkel will have lunch
with the Turkish prime minister in the Chancellery. They will discuss
the crisis in Syria and the EU accession process of Turkey in several
one-on-one meetings.

It is expected that tens of thousands of people will join the protests
during Erdogan’s visit. Basically, the Alawites have three demands:
no war against Syria and no arms deliveries to jihadist troops
from Turkey, freedom for all political prisoners, many of whom are
on hunger strike in Turkey, and equal rights for all ethnic and
religious minorities in Turkey. “It is unacceptable that Turkey goes
on suppressing minorities,” Ali Dogan said.

Merkel and Erdogan will also speak about the conflict with the Kurds.

In September, Erdogan lashed out against the German authorities,
claiming that they fail to do enough against the Workers Party of
Kurdistan (PKK), which collects protection money and recruits new
supporters in Germany. He made the allegation that Germany did not
want Turkey to resolve the Kurdish conflict. [passage omitted]

Azerbaijan Mocking Osce Mg, Un And International Community

AZERBAIJAN MOCKING OSCE MG, UN AND INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY

PanARMENIAN.Net
October 31, 2012 – 22:01 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Baku urges OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs to take more
efforts in the settlement of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict.

“Not only OSCE MG but also UN Security Council must intensify their
efforts for the settlement of the conflict,” the head of presidential
administration of Azerbaijan Elnur Aslanov told a news conference,
calling the issue of UN SC’s indifference to earlier adopted
resolutions to the international community’s attention.

It would be ridiculous to try and comment on Azeri statements. It’s
enough to remind Baku’s ignoring OSCE MG’s calls to adhere to
ceasefire, pull snipers from the line of contact, work out mechanisms
of investigation of incidents at front line.

Baku is undermining Karabakh settlement talks, with constant threats
of a new war, while purchasing and manufacturing enormous amounts of
weaponry, openly neglecting international norms.

Azerbaijan would do well to remember that UN resolutions Azeri
politicians so often remind about are purely advisory, with Baku
itself violating them from day one.

So it turns out that Azerbaijan is simply mocking OSCE MG, UN and the
whole international community, and has been doing so with complete
impunity.
