Azerbaijan Leader Unleashes Anti-Armenia Twitter Tirade

AZERBAIJAN LEADER UNLEASHES ANTI-ARMENIA TWITTER TIRADE

Agence France Presse
November 20, 2012 Tuesday 3:10 PM GMT

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev caused an Internet storm Tuesday
after his official Twitter account posted a tirade of several dozen
sharply worded statements against neighbouring Armenia.

Most of the brief messages were recycled from a long speech Aliyev
gave last week, but the sudden broadside of inflammatory tweets posted
Tuesday afternoon prompted a top Armenian lawmaker to compare the
messages with Nazi German propaganda.

“The Armenian lobby is our main enemy and we are the main enemy for
them,” said Aliyev’s official Twitter account, @presidentaz.

“Armenia is a country of no value. It is actually a colony, an outpost
run from abroad…. Evidence of this is the mass exodus of people
from Armenia to other countries,” another tweet read.

Energy-rich Muslim Azerbaijan has been in a bitter conflict with its
land-locked Christian neighbour Armenia over the territory of Nagorny
Karabakh for decades. The two fought a war in the 1990s that left
about 30,000 people dead.

“Azerbaijan grows stronger and more powerful by the year, while Armenia
weakens and declines every year,” Aliyev said in a further tweet.

The tirade drew a furious reaction from Armenian parliament deputy
chairman Eduard Sharmazanov, who called Aliyev a “totalitarian leader
of a totalitarian state”.

“Aliyev shows by his cynical proclamations that there are still
supporters of fascism in the 21st century, and that this ideology
flourishes thanks to leaders like him,” Sharmazanov told AFP.

“His remarks recall the 1930s-1940s and (Nazi leader Adolf) Hitler,”
he added.

Aliyev succeeded his father Heydar as the leader of the former Soviet
state in 2003 and has showcased the Caspian sea country as an important
energy partner to the West despite human rights concerns.

He gave the 40-minute-long speech that inspired Tuesday’s Twitter
frenzy to his New Azerbaijan Party to mark the 20th anniversary of
its establishment.

Reacting to the furore, senior Azerbaijan administration official
Ali Gasanov did not attempt to soften the rhetoric, saying Aliyev had
“laid out the facts and realities of modern day Armenia” in his speech.

“All of Armenia’s resources are directed at supporting the separatist
(Karabakh) regime on Azerbaijan’s occupied territories,” he said,
calling Armenia a country with an agenda driven by outside forces.

WATERTOWN – The team at the helm of the American University of Armenia
(AUA) made a stop at the Armenian Library and Museum of America
(ALMA) to discuss the expansion of the university, including its new
undergraduate program, to a packed audience.

The panel from the AUA included: Dr. Dennis Leavens, provost; Maral
Chalian, vice president of institutional advancement; Ashot Ghazaryan,
vice president of operations; and Gevorg Goyunyan, vice president

of finance and President Dr. Bruce Boghosian, a Massachusetts native
who has led the university since 2010.

“People felt there was a need to learn more about it on the East
Coast,”Boghosian said. “The AUA is really a project of the University
of California. It is a gift from the entire diaspora to the Republic
of Armenia.”

The AUA was founded in 1991 as a collaboration between the University
of California, the government of Armenia and the Armenian General
Benevolent Union (AGBU). Boghosian said that the same body that
accredits the UC system, the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges
and Universities of the Western

Association of Schools and Colleges, accredits the AUA.

Carol Aslanian of the AGBU Central Board and Ed Avedisian, who serves
on the Board of Trustees of the AUA, attended the ALMA presentation.

Boghosian discussed the innovations at the university, including the
new undergraduate

program, as well as other new graduate programs.

Boghossian was the chairman of the Department of Mathematics at Tufts
University for 10 years before his appointment at AUA. Boghosian
received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (MIT) and his doctorate from the University
of California, Davis. Boghosian stressed that the goal of his team
is to make AUA a world-class international institution, following in
the footsteps of its sister school, the American University of Beirut.

“Our intention is to give a global education in Armenia,” he
said. For that reason, he noted, searches for faculty positions
stretch internationally. “The goal is to give the highest quality of
education. We measure ourselves against international institutions,”
he said, adding that they want to do so in a way that is “inexpensive
enough” in order for students to afford the tuition.

Currently, the tuition is about $2,500 a year for local students and
$8,000 for foreign students. The foreign students come from Iran,
Russia, India, Europe and the US.

The actual cost for educating each student for one year is considerably
higher – closer to

$10,000 – Boghosian noted. “We rely on donations to make up a large
part of it,” he said. He noted that the school has a “full-need and
need-blind” admission policy, meaning that a student’s inability to
pay any portion of the tuition will not impact his or her admission.

Boghosian and his team spoke about the launch of the undergraduate
program in September 2013, as well as getting more international
students into AUA, as Armenia is 98.5 percent ethnically homogenous
and the infusion of foreign students would benefit both the locals
and the foreign students in terms of exposure to Armenia.

The undergraduate program got the green light in June, after a year of
the approval process. Initially, the program will offer three majors
and accept 300 students annually. Boghosian said by 2017, therefore,
will have 1,200 undergraduate and a total number of 1,600 students,
including the 400 graduate students.

In addition, the school has close to 2,000 extension students studying
computers or English.

Another area in which AUA is accelerating is organizing conferences
and seminars, some jointly with Yerevan State University. Among
the speakers in the past six months have been Dr. Aram Chobanian,
the former president of Boston University.

Boghosian said AUA students have a lower rate of emigrating than other
schools, with 75 percent of graduates opting to stay in the country.

Leavens spoke next, noting that he joined the school in July. “I am
most excited to be in Yerevan. It is a very dynamic, very historic
moment,” he noted. He praised the students, noting they are “very
serious, dedicated and ambitious.”

Leavens stressed that the AUA was trying to focus on what the
country needs in order to help students fill that gap. He also noted
collaborations with the Armenian International Women’s Association
for the women’s entrepreneurship in Armenia, as well as now providing
education for 80 refugees from Syria, who thanks to two anonymous
donors, are studying for free.

“We feel honored to have these people on our campus,” he said.

Leavens most recent post was at the United Arab Emirates University,
where, over a period of seven years, he served as associate dean and
dean of Humanities and Social Sciences. Before that, he had taught
at several universities in the US.

A lively question-and-answer session followed the talk by the
panelists.

Serving as master of ceremonies for the program was Katrina Menzigian
of Arlington, vice president, research relations, at the Everest Group,
who had been a consultant to the AUA in its early years.

Iran Missile Technology Supplied To Hamas In Gaza – Commander

IRAN MISSILE TECHNOLOGY SUPPLIED TO HAMAS IN GAZA – COMMANDER

November 21, 2012 – 19:12 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Iran has supplied Hamas in Gaza with the technology
to “quickly” produce longer-range missiles on their own without
needing direct shipments, said a report Wednesday, November 21 that
quoted the head of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard, AP reported.

The comments by Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari offer some of the clearest
insights on Iran’s weapons support for Hamas, whose Iranian-engineered
Fajr-5 missiles have struck near Tel Aviv and Jerusalem during weeklong
battles with Israel.

“Gaza is under siege, so we cannot help them. The Fajr-5 missiles
have not been shipped from Iran. Its technology has been transferred
and (the missiles are) being produced quickly,” Jafari was quoted as
saying by the semiofficial ISNA news agency.

Iran has repeatedly denied it directly supplied Hamas with the Fajr-5.

The ISNA report gave no further details on the level of missile
know-how sent to Gaza or the channels used.

Israel charges that Iran sends weapons, including rockets, to Gaza
through a network of smuggling tunnels under the 15-kilometer (9-mile)
border between Gaza and Egypt.

Iran also backs the anti-Israel faction Hezbollah in Lebanon, which
fired thousands of rockets into Israel during a monthlong 2006 war.

Iran’s parliament speaker, Ali Larijani, meanwhile, said his country
was “honored” that Iran could help Palestinians with “material and
military aspects.” He did not elaborate.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Gaza over the past
week in an operation it says is meant to stop daily rocket salvos by
Gaza militants at Israel.

Raffi Hovannisian: Azerbaijan Committed Aggression Against Karabakh

RAFFI HOVANNISIAN: AZERBAIJAN COMMITTED AGGRESSION AGAINST KARABAKH

arminfo
Thursday, November 22, 14:54

Arminfo-Turan. “I think we should overcome the heritage of the past
and every party should be more self-critical”, – ex-foreign minister
of Armenia, Raffi Hovannisian, staying in Baku within the frames of
the 7th international conference of Asian countries, said at today’s
press-conference.

Asked about settlement of the Karabakh conflict, Hovannisian said
that one should not use such terms like “occupation”. “If we follow
this logic, in that case major part of the Armenian lands are also
under occupation of Turkey and Azerbaijan. For this reason, I think
we should overcome the heritage of the past and every party should
be more self-critical”, – he said.

Asked about the reason of the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict, he replied
that “the aggression of Azerbaijan against Karabakh residents” is the
reason of the conflict. “Both parties suffered, not only Azerbaijani
refugees, which of course is very bad. But Armenian refugees were
also wounded, and one should remember that”, – Raffi Hovannisian said.

IN “ENEMY’S DEN”: RAFFI HOVANNISIAN STANDS UP TO KARABAKH RIGHTS IN BAKU

KARABAKH | 22.11.12 | 14:22

Raffi Hovannisian, the founder and leader of the Heritage Party,
has spoken in defense of the rights of the people of Karabakh to
self-determination as he delivered a speech at an international
gathering in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Hovannisian alone travelled to Baku via Tbilisi on Wednesday to take
part in an international conference of Asian political parties to
which he had been invited as the leader of Heritage.

At a press conference in Yerevan shortly before his trip Hovannisian
said organizers of the event in Azerbaijan had promised equal
conditions for him to express his views along with other participants
of the conference as well as provided him with security guarantees.

“I hope that we can reach peace, restore relations and that it will
happen when either party understands that it bears responsibility for
the entire region,” Hovannisian said in his speech as cited by A1 Plus.

“Residents of Nagorno-Karabakh have equal rights to declare their
self-determination. One has to respect each other’s rights, each
other’s identity and culture,” emphasized the Armenian politician.

Hovannisian, who served as independent Armenia’s first foreign
minister in 1991-92, also reportedly named Azerbaijan’s aggression
against Nagorno-Karabakh as the cause of the conflict.

According to Azerbaijani media, the Armenian politician, who was on his
first visit to Baku, also announced his plans to visit a local Armenian
church (which was renovated in 2002, but has been used to house a
presidential library since then) as well as meet some local Armenians.

Authorities in Azerbaijan claim up to 30,000 ethnic Armenians continue
to live in Baku despite the displacement of nearly 400,000 Armenians
from Azerbaijan in the late 1980s- early 1990s.

High Rank Persons "Cover" Forest Mafia In Armenia

HIGH RANK PERSONS “COVER” FOREST MAFIA IN ARMENIA

arminfo
Thursday, November 22, 12:50

High rank persons are behind the forest mafia in Armenia, the head
of the “Green Union of Armenia”, Hakop Sanasaryan, told Arminfo
correspondent.

He also pointed at shadow activity of the state non-commercial
organization “Armles”, which cut the best trees under the guise of
sanitary extraction of timber. “In 2011 the government underfinanced
“Armles” by more than 20%. For this reason, it cuts the best trees, as
it knows that top officials will shut their eyes to that”, – he said.

Another problem of the Armenian forests are the nearby villages,
the residents of which cut trees to heat their houses and to cook,
so that to economize gas and electric power. Every such family fires
about 25-30 cubic metre of firewood every year.

As experts say, the forest coverage of Armenia reduced from 25% to 8%
over the last 20 years. According to investigation of IUCN and ICARE,
the scales of illegal extraction of timber in Armenia exceed official
data by 80 times.

Ashot Manucharyan: Russia Is Trying To Counterweight The West In Arm

ASHOT MANUCHARYAN: RUSSIA IS TRYING TO COUNTERWEIGHT THE WEST IN ARMENIA USING PROSPEROUS ARMENIA PARTY AND THE FORCES CONSOLIDATED AROUND IT

arminfo
Thursday, November 22, 13:49

Russia is trying to counterweight the West and the Republican Party of
Armenia advocating its interests in Armenia using Prosperous Armenia
Party and the forces consolidated around it: Armenian National Congress
and ARF Dashnaktsutyun. Ashot Manucharyan, a member of the Karabakh
Committee, ex-adviser of the first president of Armenia for national
security, made such statement in a press conference, Thursday.

He said that the political consultations launched by Prosperous
Armenia Party and the confrontation with the ruling party of Armenia
is nothing but a conflict of interests of the West and Russia in
Armenia. “Our country must find the right formula in order to get in
on the ground-floor,” he said.

“Russia extremely needs partners in Armenia and its efforts to
unite PAP and other political parties aim to make Moscow’s positions
stronger in Armenia. It is inherently a positive process, because
political monopoly is inadmissible. Any balance of forces restricts
the possibilities of the ruling party, and Russia tries to keep that
balance,” Manucharyan said. At the same time, the politician thinks
that this process may yield a reverse effect i.e. it may lead to public
unrest in Armenia with even worse consequences than in March 2008.

To recall, Secretary of the Prosperous Armenia Party Faction,
Naira Zohrabyan, said on Nov 6 that the PAP was starting political
consultations in the run-up to the presidential elections 2013. She
said that the consultations will focus on possible consolidation of
political forces around the idea of switching to the parliamentary
system of governing, which would allow enhancing the role of the
political forces in the country’s life. Earlier Leader of Heritage
Party Raffi Hovannisian, as well as members of the Armenian National
Congress and ARF Dashnaktsutyun advocated this idea. A meeting with
Free Democrats was held expected today, on Nov 21.

Opposition Licensed Election Fraud

OPPOSITION LICENSED ELECTION FRAUD
Naira Hayrumyan

Country – Thursday, 22 November 2012, 12:34

After the failure of them motion to call an extraordinary parliamentary
session the Armenian opposition and the “alternative” made such a
noise about that as if Galust Sahakyan had dated them in parliament
but didn’t arrive. Sahakyan had stated at the very beginning that
the Republican parliamentary group wouldn’t attend the session. Why
are they angry now?

The opposition and the “alternative” claim that the RPA is against
the reform of the electoral system and is going to rig the upcoming
presidential elections.

Why should the ruling party need a reform of the current voting
system? Ahead of the parliamentary election in May they had fixed
and greased and tried out the machine and it is a pity to ruin it now.

Moreover, the opposition and the “alternative” did nothing during the
parliamentary elections in order to break it. On the contrary, they
recognized the election outcome without complaints. No one rejected
the parliamentary mandates. Moreover, the joint campaign headquarters
ensured the flawless work of the machine.

How come two months before the next election they suddenly stood up
to destroy the machine? How come the same opposition gave an approval
to use it by accepting the results of the parliamentary elections?

Why should the RPA want to ruin the machine if it is sure that the
opposition will not take up decisive steps and will recognize the
election return? The opposition and the “alternative” have already
proven that there will be no abrupt steps. The only thing they can
do is to shake their fists after the fight.

Participation in elections by an evidently flawed system means issuance
of a license for its conduct. Political forces which think there is
an election falsification machine in the country should undertake more
active steps to break it. This could be done by direct boycott of the
elections or a call for street protests, resignation from parliament
or many other actions allowed by the Constitution, by the way.

The lack of such methods means that the indignation of the opposition
and the “alternative” is just a means to make sure people will attend
their political actions in order to demand dividends after Serzh
Sargsyan’s re-election. Do the opposition and the “alternative” on
behalf of Prosperous Armenia want to break the election machine or
are they satisfied with the crumbs from the master’s table?
