Ankara: French Singer Aznavour Criticized By Turkey, Armenian Diaspo

FRENCH SINGER AZNAVOUR CRITICIZED BY TURKEY, ARMENIAN DIASPORA UPON REMARKS

Turkish Press
April 1 2013

French-Armenian musician Charles Aznavour has been criticized by both
Turkey and the Armenian diaspora in Switzerland following his remarks
on the death of Armenian people in 1915 at the hands of the Ottomans
and his proposals for normalization of Turkey-Armenia relations.

Aznavour, who is Armenia’s ambassador to Switzerland and permanent
delegate to the United Nations office in Geneva, criticized Prime
Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan last week in a televised interview in
Switzerland, without naming him.

He claimed that the Turkish prime minister once said he hates Greeks
and Armenians, saying that a prime minister cannot say such things.

In a written statement released on Saturday, the Foreign Ministry
said: “We cannot understand what his stated claims are based on. We
strongly reject this groundless and meaningless accusation. The Turks
have long coexisted peacefully with the Armenians and Greeks.” The
Turkish statement, however, welcomed Aznavour’s offering proposals
on the normalization of Turkish-Armenian relations as a world-famous
“man of art and intellectual.”

Meanwhile, Aznavour’s remarks have also drawn a reaction from the
Armenian diaspora in Switzerland, though from a different viewpoint.

Secretary-General of the Swiss parliament’s Switzerland-Armenia
parliamentary friendship group Sarkis Shahinian issued a press
release criticizing Aznavour’s remarks for their “banalization” on the
so-called Armenian genocide. “Turks are using the word ‘mass killing’
— let them use it,” said Aznavour, maintaining that he would not
ask for anything other than the opening of the border between the
two countries and recognition of historical events between the two
nations. He, however, also stated that he does not care about using
the word “genocide” when defining the 1915 events, claiming that a
simple recognition of the killings is necessary and sufficient.

Aznavour mentioned that he found it “ridiculous” and “pitiful” that
young Armenians are writing more books by the day and vast libraries
could be filled with all of their efforts spent on the question. He
said that the issue is also a burden on young Turks. But Aznavour’s
constructive remarks on the normalization of Turkey-Armenia ties,
recalling that Turkey and Armenia share a border and there are economic
— even if informal — and tourism relations between the two countries,
have angered the Armenian diaspora. Shahinian’s statement, released
after Aznavour’s interview, asked the Armenian government “what
they aim for with having themselves represented in the international
arena by a person [Aznavour] who fails to grasp the struggle in its
totality for the recognition of a crime related to the destruction
of his own people.”

The statement also accused Aznavour of “throwing to the wind a long
struggle in Switzerland which provided for a unique judicial opinion
making it illegal to deny [the so-called Armenian genocide].”

Armenian National Airline Declares Bankruptcy

ARMENIAN NATIONAL AIRLINE DECLARES BANKRUPTCY

Agence France Presse
April 1, 2013 Monday 1:44 PM GMT

Armenia’s last national airline, Armavia, on Monday ceased operations
and launched bankruptcy procedures due to grave financial problems,
the company said.

“Over the last three years, the owner of Armavia airline has been
investing finances from (his) other businesses in order to support
the air carrier,” Armavia said in a statement.

“However, the current situation makes it impossible to continue
working this way.”

Founded in 1996 by Armenian businessman Mikhail Bagdasarov, Armavia
owns one Airbus A320, three Boeing 737, and four medium-range planes.

The company linked its inability to pay debts to the consequences of
the world economic crisis that has hit the aviation industry hard and
has caused the bankruptcy or liquidation of several major carriers
such as American Airlines and Russia’s Kuban.

Russia’s aviation authority Rosaviatsiya said that Armavia owed
more than $1.3 million (1.0 million euros) to airports and more than
$250,000 to air traffic services in Russia.

Armavia served 48 destinations in Europe, Asia, and North Africa.

Armenia, an ex-Soviet republic, is a landlocked country with neighbours
that include traditional foes Turkey and Azerbaijan

With air links critical to maintaining international contacts, it is
unclear what will fill the void left by Armavia’s collapse.

The company’s bankruptcy leaves Armenia without a national air carrier,
since the other state-owned carrier, Armenian Airlines, went bankrupt
in 2003.

Partnership To Advance Gender Equality, Women’s Leadership In Armeni

US Fed News
April 1, 2013 Monday 9:58 PM EST

PARTNERSHIP TO ADVANCE GENDER EQUALITY, WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP IN ARMENIA

TEMPE, Ariz., April 1 — Arizona State University issued the following
press release:

Arizona State University is one of five universities in the United
States selected to participate in the new Women’s Leadership Program
announced March 21 by the U.S. Agency for International Development
(USAID) and Higher Education for Development (HED).

Each university will partner with a higher education institution in
Armenia, Paraguay, Rwanda or South Sudan to promote gender equality
and female empowerment. (Official press release here.)

With funding from USAID totaling approximately $8.75 million, these
critical higher education partnerships will promote and develop
curricula and opportunities for women in business, agriculture and
education in the targeted countries, thus supporting key national and
local development goals aimed at fostering the advancement of women
and girls.

In addition to Arizona State, the partnering U.S. universities are
Indiana University, Michigan State University, the University of
Florida, and the University of California Los Angeles.

ASU’s component of the program, funded by a $1.3 million award to
the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences’ Melikian Center: Russian,
Eurasian and East European Studies, leverages a decade of partnerships
between ASU and Yerevan State University (YSU) in Armenia.

The award will establish a Center for Gender and Leadership Studies
at YSU that will develop new curriculum in women and gender studies,
promote career advancement for women university graduates, conduct
outreach activities, and advance public policy research on issues
related to gender equality and women’s leadership.

Over the course of the three-year partnership, eight YSU scholars in
areas related to women’s studies will be in-residence in ASU’s women
and gender studies program within the School of Social Transformation
to participate in courses and develop syllabi and action-oriented
research goals. The scholars also will be engaged in courses in the
School of Public Affairs. The first cohort of scholars will arrive
for ASU’s Fall 2013 semester.

ASU’s partnership director is Victor Agadjanian, the E.E. Guillot
International Distinguished Professor in the T. Denny Sanford School of
Social and Family Dynamics. A speaker of Eastern Armenian, Agadjanian
has done pioneering research on social change in the former Soviet
Union – including rural Armenia – and serves on the graduate faculty
for the gender studies doctoral program at ASU.

Mary Margaret Fonow, co-director, is a professor of women and
gender studies, director of the School of Social Transformation,
and an internationally recognized scholar on women’s leadership and
labor issues.

Stephen Batalden, co-director, is the Melikian Center director and an
authority on Eurasian cultural history, the newly independent states
of Eurasia, and the religious and cultural history of modern Russia.

Alexander Markarov, the YSU deputy vice rector and head of the YSU
International Cooperation Office, has served as principal investigator
on other ASU-YSU grant partnerships and will serve as YSU’s partnership
director for this program.

Batalden says that the partnership goals are very much inspired by
the vision of former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for
successful development, articulated in USAID’s Gender Equality and
Female Empowerment policy released in March 2012.

“A hallmark of Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State was policies
recognizing that long-term peace and prosperity around the world are
possible only when women and men enjoy equal opportunity to reach their
potential,” he notes. “Since being folded into the State Department,
USAID’s new policies on gender equality and female empowerment
emphasize building high-impact partnerships, harnessing innovation,
and conducting rigorous program evaluation.

“In each of these regards, the partnership really is a made-for-ASU
kind of effort, bringing a lot of innovation and cross-disciplinary
expertise to the table,” says Batalden.

In October, professors Agadjanian, Batalden and Fonow visited Yerevan
State to conduct a needs assessment. The partnership leadership team
convened at ASU in January, including Gohar Shahnazaryan, associate
professor of sociology at YSU and founding director of the Women’s
Resource Center of Armenia – the largest NGO serving young women
in post-Soviet Armenia and an important community partner in the
new grant project. Shahnazaryan was also recently named director of
the new Center for Gender and Leadership Studies at YSU, which will
celebrate its official launch on May 7.

“Gohar Shahnazaryan has done wonderful work to establish and grow
this NGO, and we’re delighted she has taken on the center directorship
at Yerevan State,” says Fonow. “They are doing important advocacy in
Armenia and the region in educating, organizing and mobilizing people
around gender issues and violence against women.

“Reducing gender-based inequities locally, nationally and
internationally informs our scholarship and teaching in women and
gender studies at ASU, and we appreciate that this partnership will
also bring insights to our own faculty and students,” she notes.

More than a third of the partnership budget is allocated for
institutional capacity building at YSU. With 1.1 million residents,
the capital city of Yerevan is home to more than a third of Armenia’s
population, but the partnership will also support efforts to expand
women’s access to higher education and leadership mentoring in rural
communities.

Agadjanian says Armenia is a good social laboratory in the region
for developing innovative initiatives to benefit women economically,
politically and socially.

“Though Armenia is a fairly traditional, patriarchal society, it
is open enough to absorb new ideas, to try new social experiments,
if you will,” Agadjanian says.

“Like many post-Soviet societies, Armenia once saw quite a rapid
advancement of women under the Soviet system, as women joined the
labor force and pursued higher education on a large scale over a few
decades,” he says. “After Armenia’s independence in 1991, women’s
participation in household and community decision-making has also
been fueled by necessity. With many Armenian men having to migrate to
Russia for employment, women are taking responsibility for leadership
in their homes and communities.

“But these changes haven’t solved the fundamental problems of gender
inequality,” he explains. “And, in many ways, they have only added a
new burden to women as they’ve assumed additional roles beyond the
household duties without conditions being created to balance the
pursuit of family and professional goals.

“Our collaborators want to build on and complement this early impetus
with new models of empowerment for women that are compatible with local
traditions and culture – integrating what’s positive and constructive
(Armenia’s constitution, for example, includes specific protections
for family, motherhood and children) and taking that respect for family
and motherhood to a new level, by creating an environment where women
have a real choice about their lives and the same opportunities and
rewards that men enjoy.

“Of course, you can’t really change women’s lives unless you change
men,” Agadjanian emphasizes. “So this partnership will also be about
working with men – raising awareness about gender equality and getting
leaders in education and NGOs on board intellectually, psychologically
and culturally about the benefits of working on women’s leadership
and advancement issues.

“In the end,” says Agadjanian, “our comparative advantage
as a university-based initiative is our ability to help build
research-driven outreach and advocacy. The YSU faculty who come to
ASU for training will gain the understanding and practical skills
to go identify, study, analyze and produce recommendations and
interventions based on robust research to address concrete problems
facing their society.”

Maldives Minister Denies Connection With Artur Brothers

MALDIVES MINISTER DENIES CONNECTION WITH ARTUR BROTHERS

Haveeru online, Maldives
April 1 2013

by Ali yoosuf, Haveeru Online

Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim on Sunday denied any connection with
the infamous Armenian brothers accused of being conmen and drug
traffickers.

Nazim said he had found about the Artur brothers Margaryan and Sargayan
through social media networks and refuted rumors connecting him with
the Arturs.

“I don’t have any connection with them. I came to know about them
after the rumors started spreading on social media networks. But no
country had informed of us anything officially,” Nazim explained.

The brothers were pictured with Tourism Minister Ahmed Adeeb and
Defence Minister Nazim during a motor racing event held in Hulhumale
in January.

They are believed to be residing in a resort near the capital after
briefly living in Hulhumale.

According to Nazim the racing event in Hulhumale had been attended by
many foreign tourists which could explain why the Artur brothers had
been captured on camera with him. However, the Minister insisted that
he had no link with the Arturs and had never sought their assistance.

“To my knowledge those two men have left the Maldives,” Nazim said.

Haveeru had found that the Artur brothers have registered a company
‘Artur Brothers World Connections’ with the Economic Ministry last
October.

The shareholders of the company include two French nationals and a
local. The main company of the two brothers, “Artur Brothers Holding”
is engaged in business activities ranging from entertainment,
Property Development, Real Estate, Security, Labor Supplier, Main
Power Supplier, Casino, General Trading, Hotel Industry and Car
Trading according to the company website.

It has also been confirmed that the Arturs have been gradually
investing in the Maldives since October.

The two Armenians had been linked to a huge scandal in Kenya which
eventually led to their highly controversial deportation.

A local media outlet KTN’s investigations team produced a daring
expose of the cover-up that followed the seizure of Kenya’s largest
ever cocaine haul in December 2004.

The channel further disclosed how several tonnes of the cocaine went
missing; how the brothers were allowed to escape and how two State
prosecutions were deliberately mishandled.

Liska Has Decided To Become Legislative

LISKA HAS DECIDED TO BECOME LEGISLATIVE

2013-04-02 23:25:40

After Presidential inauguration ceremony Syunik Governor Surik
Khachatryan is in the first row of the expected resignations.

According to our information, Khachatryan, however, decided not
to step back and do everything in the name of his name not to be
forgotten in the political field.

Most interesting is, however, not the operation as much, as much its
target. For many years officiating in executive and obtaining the name
of the most disgraceful and scandalous Governor in the whole history
of the Republic of Armenia, Liska has decided to become a legislative.

We can say with confidence that Liska has made this decision
independently, with the same risk, with the help of which he decided to
enter the field of science, as he believed that Armenian historiography
needed such a scholar.

Thus, among the elite of the nation, operation of putting on mandate is
to be carried out for Liska. Deputy of National Assembly, on mission by
Khachatryanm representing the 37th polling station, Hayk Grigoryan,
will announce about putting on mandate, after which additional
elections of NA deputy will be organized. Once instead of his brother,
Jonik Abrahamyan, who resigned the post of Deputy of Prime Minister
and Minister of Territorial Administration and put on his mandate,
Hovik Abrahamyan came to National Assambly and then became NA Speaker.

If Navo and Shmays are legislators, so why can not Liska become
legislative? Moreover, if “Navo and Shmays” are the descent and reflect
the true face of RA, and it’s their parliament, then the parliament
simply needs Liska. Moreover, if the final aspirations of Liska
get “good conditions”, and if RA NA vision is “Navo’s and Shmays’s
parliament” we can say that the fifth convocation of NA has regressed.

Moreover, this “regression” can be a big step to change it into
progress, taking into consideration that what kind of heroisms can
be the exceled Governor in the National Assembly.

As for the left, “post”, the future Governor’s candidacy has not
yet finally approved. There is also noticeable lack of staff. MP
Vahe Hakobyan (Molybdenum Vahe) and the Chief of Information and
Public Relations Department of DM, Major General Vardan Avetisyan,
who was born in Tegh village and is Serzh Sargsyan relative are among
the candidates.

Robert Kocharyan Hung The Label

ROBERT KOCHARYAN HUNG THE LABEL

05:24 PM | TODAY | SOCIAL

Exactly 11 years ago this day-April 2, “A1 +” TV channel was deprived
of the blue screen and it is not a secret for anyone who ordered it.

“The main difficulty was “the label of the enemy of the country
and the media which spread misinformation destroying the bases of
the country” which was hung on the doors of “A1+” by disreputable
and ill-famed Robert Kocharyan”,- that “A1 +” TV channel’s chairman
Mesrop Movsesian told during a press conference today.

Robert Kocharyan who was occupying the chair of RA president wanted
to hear only good news.

“Unfortunately, Robert Khocharyan was among the first who understood
what free media meant and what consequences it could have”, – “A1 +”
TV company president commented on his TV channel deprivation from
broadcasting.

Although after the banning of air “A1 +” has been subjected to numerous
experiments, which are still going on but the director Mesrop Movsesian
proudly noted that the majority of staff kept working despite the
existing financial, technical and personnel problems.

The head of “A1 +” also touched upon his appearance in the list of
“Hello Yerevan” faction in the City Councilors’ election.

He assured that he had never been engaged in politics and would never
be and especially mentioned that during the political campaign he
would never become the “microphone” of any political force, including
“Heritage”.

“I would like you separate “A1 +” from Mesrop Movsesyan person.

Besides the obligations I have also my rights as a citizen.”

In the words of “A1 +” TV Director his appearance in the list was
a surprise. “On the one hand it makes me more responsible; on the
other hand it frightens me since I am not looking for the numbers
in politics”.

By the way, during today’s press conference “Kentron/ Center”
television political commentator Petros Ghazaryan was also invited
who was not present.
