ANKARA: What Was April 24?

WHAT WAS APRIL 24?

Today’s Zaman, Turkey
May 1 2013

CENGİZ AKTAR
[email protected]

Last week, Today’s Zaman signed off on a very important piece of
journalism. Professors Taner Akcam and Yusuf Halacoglu were asked
seven questions about the forced relocation of Ottoman Armenians and
its disastrous outcomes.

Akcam’s responses were also reproduced in Zaman’s Sunday edition. I
wholly applaud this initiative. April 24 is not necessarily a topic
we know or wish to know much about. It was a countrywide disaster that
has been scraped away from Turkey’s memory by the Ittihadist-Kemalist
elites.

April 24 was the dark day when the decision to erase Armenians from
Anatolia began to be implemented by the Ottoman government led by the
Committee of Union and Progress (CUP), known also as the Ittihadists,
in 1915.

There is no thorough knowledge regarding the consequences of the
disaster in Turkey. For example, there are no substantial studies
looking at possible connections between future Kurdish uprisings
and the erasure of Armenians from that region. No one really knows
what happened to human, political and economic relations throughout
Anatolia once the Armenians were eliminated. It is, however, quite
certain that the effects of such a wide-reaching elimination operation
were enormous. Yet what we know is limited to numbers.

Let us recall: According to a commission report of May 1919 by the
Ottoman government that came to power in 1918, the number of Armenian
citizens who had lost their lives was 800,000. A book published in 1928
by the Turkish General Staff detailing losses during World War I notes
“800,000 Armenians and 200,000 Greeks died as a result of massacres,
forced relocations and forced labor.” When one adds those who died
after 1918 in the Caucasus region due to hunger, illness and massacres,
the figure surpasses a million. These are numbers Akcam mentions in
his answers.

The “cleansing” work of Ittihadists was completed by Kemalists. This
was done by obliging those throughout Anatolia whose lives were
spared to take shelter in İstanbul, and simultaneously by erasing
their places of worship and schools throughout the peninsula.

This mass disaster is still far from being accepted. The fact that
Anatolian Armenianness has been erased is not enough to make us
understand and accept the harsh truth. For years now, defenders of
the official thesis have gone all out trying to prove that it was
all unintentional. All sorts of outrageous comparisons are made,
and the entire nation holds its breath every April 24, waiting to
hear what the US president will say publicly on the matter.

With only two years to go until the centennial of 1915, there has been
a visible increase in the number of denialist activities. To start
with, denials cloaked in scientific covers aimed at persuading the
Western academic world have become more prominent. The “antithesis”
wars have now leapt from the US over to Europe. In fact, there are
more and more foreigners involved than ever in denialist endeavors.

The search for scientific evidence also takes place at home, replacing
the vulgar denialism. Of course, researchers doing these readings
never, ever ask for the first-hand sources — such as Turkish General
Staff Military History Archives and Strategic Studies Institute
(ATASE) or the Foreign Ministry archives — to be opened to the public.

Second are the lobbying activities and attempts to influence lawmakers,
especially in the US.

And thirdly, there is a clear attempt to “substitute” other events for
1915. The Dardanelles victory in the west and the military debacle of
SarıkamıÅ~_ in the east are being flogged in the official narrative
as the substitutes to what occurred to Armenians in 1915.

None of these activities are coincidental. But contrary to the initial
aim, every time these bizarre theories are uttered, their pathetic
weakness appears, much like the responses offered up by Halacoglu to
the questions in the interview mentioned above.

The hope rests with those social layers who refuse denial and work
to ensure that the Great Catastrophe is not erased from our memories.

Perhaps at the top of the list of those working to preserve memory
and empathize with Armenians are those pious citizens who know quite
well about the oppression of Ittihadist-Kemalist elites, the same
who prepared and executed the annihilation of Armenians.

Car culture has gone global – are you keeping up? Check out this
Nissan tearing it up in the Republic of Armenia.

Let’s listen to the Armenian national anthem to get in the mood of
the post-soviet republic and think about the shredding tires on this
lowly Nissan Altima again.

Yeah it’s just a front-driver going ham, but that is some genuinely
impressive FWD tire shredding there. That and it’s awesome to see
just about any foreign-market hoonage.

Do you think this Altima tops the epic Lada dorifto session we saw
in Baku, Azerbaijan?

AGBU Chapter and Young Professionals in Plovdiv Raise over $5,000 for Programs in Armenia

The AGBU Plovdiv Chapter celebrated its 103rd anniversary with a charity gala, “Children and Youth – Our Future,” to raise funds for the participation of Bulgarian-Armenian children and youth at AGBU and Diaspora Ministry summer programs in Armenia. The AGBU Plovdiv Young Professionals played a pivotal role in organizing the successful evening – which raised more than $5,000, including proceeds from an auction – at the city’s exclusive Viennese Pavilion.

The gala was attended by over 220 guests from five different cities in Bulgaria, including Armenian Ambassador to Bulgaria Arsen Shoyan, Vicar General of the Armenian Diocese in Bulgaria Archimandrite Abgar Hovakimian, Honorary Consul of Armenia in Plovdiv Ehiazar Uzunyan, former mayors Garabed Tomasyan and Spas Garnevski, AGBU Plovdiv chapter chair Roupen Chavoushian, as well as a number of prominent city council members and politicians.

The gala guests enjoyed a full-on program with the participation of the AGBU Vocal and Instrumental Band Erebouni, the Armenian Dance Group Nayiri and the Bulgarian Dance Ensemble Rachenitsa. They also watched video presentations on programs targeted by the fundraising efforts, including AGBU’s Discover Armenia, Yerevan Summer Internship Program, Antranik Scout Camp, as well as the Diaspora Ministry’s Ari Tun program.

The highlight of the evening was the auction entitled “For the Children by the Children.” All the items up for auction came from Armenia, including a duduk, a mother-of-pearl khachkar and four works of art made by the youth at AGBU’s Children’s Centers in Armenia, which became the object of a heated bidding war.

The AGBU Plovdiv Chapter intends this step to be the first one of consistent efforts in the future to raise funds for the participation of youth from Bulgaria in summer programs in Armenia. The Chapter and its young members are convinced that the path to Armenia will inspire the next generations, instilling in them a sense of belonging like no other experience could.

Established in 1906, AGBU () is the world’s largest non-profit Armenian organization. Headquartered in New York City, AGBU preserves and promotes the Armenian identity and heritage through educational, cultural and humanitarian programs, annually touching the lives of some 400,000 Armenians around the world.

Police Treat Campaigns Selectively – Oppositionist

POLICE TREAT CAMPAIGNS SELECTIVELY – OPPOSITIONIST

16:44 ~U 02.05.13

An Armenian opposition activist running for the Yerevan mayor says the
police have a selective approach to the political campaign and impose
restrictions on the parties whose policies do not seem palatable to
the government.

Speaking to Tert.am, the deputy leader of the Heritage party, Armen
Martirosyan noted that the police sanctioned a recent procession
by the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC), which was
absolutely law. But he said it isn’t yet clear why their party is
facing restrictions in that regard.

“The strange thing here is that they ban another political force
from holding a procession. It is clear, to my mind, that the police
are annexed to the authorities, exercising their punitive functions,
which in this case applies to the political forces not agreeable to
the authorities,” he said.

Students Of The State Agricultural College Of The Armenian National

STUDENTS OF THE STATE AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE OF THE ARMENIAN NATIONAL AGRARIAN UNIVERSITY IN THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

02.05.2013

On May 2 the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Science, Education,
Culture, Youth and Sport of the National Assembly Artak Davtyan met
with the students and lecturers of the State Agricultural College of
the Armenian National Agrarian University, who visited the parliament
within the framework of the “Open Lesson” programme.

Artak Davtyan presented to the young people the structure of the
National Assembly, the functions and authorities prescribed by
the Constitution, the role and significance of the legislative
body in the political and public life of the country. The Committee
Chairman detailed the law-making chain: putting the initiatives into
circulation, the orders of debating them in the specialized committees,
then in the plenary sittings.

The students addressed to Artak Davtyan questions relating to the
social, economic spheres concerning the society. Answering the
question on the reforms to be made in the upcoming years in the
sphere of education, the speaker noted that they would be consonant
with the ideas stipulated in the 2011-2015 Education Development State
Programme. The amendments will include the spheres from the pre-school
period to science: Artak Davtyan distinguished the investment of the
general inclusive education in the general educational institutions,
the integration into Bologna process in the sphere of higher education
and in particular, the application of the crediting system. And in
the sphere of science it has been planned to increase the volumes of
financing year by year.

Artak Davtyan also answered other issues concerning the attendees.

After the meeting the students and the lecturers have been photographed
with the President of the Parliament Hovik Abrahamyan in the Session
Hall of the National Assembly.

BREAKING NEWS: Ruslan Tsarni Apologizes to Armenian Community

Ruslan Tsarni

By Alin K. Gregorian

Mirror-Spectator Staff

WATERTOWN – On April 30, Ruslan Tsarni, the uncle of alleged terror
suspects, Tamerlan and Djokhar Tsarnaev, contacted
the Mirror-Spectator directly to issue an apology to the Armenian
community for his recent statements referencing Armenians in his
discussions of the Boston Marathon bombings.

“Armenia has a very strong culture, therefore, I want to stress that
his [Misha’s] ethnicity has nothing to do with it,” Tsarni said.

“I wish I had never said it.”

Tsarni added, “I felt for you [Armenians] and wish I had never done
it.”

He once again apologized for connecting the Armenian community “to
this evil event.”

In previous media statements, Tsarni had discussed  a recent convert
to Islam named “Misha” – now reported as Mikhail Allakhverdova –
stressing that he was of “Armenian descent” while implicating the
man in the possible “brainwashing” of Tamerlan Tsarnev with notions
of violence against non-Muslims.

Tsarni spoke briefly on the matter via phone, but said he was unable
to comment further or answer additional questions.

Tigran Khzmalyan: If PAP Is Opposition, Then We Are Authorities

TIGRAN KHZMALYAN: IF PAP IS OPPOSITION, THEN WE ARE AUTHORITIES

15:15 30/04/2013 ” TOPIC OF THE DAY

The notion of ‘opposition’ is in danger in the Armenian reality,
member of Sardarapat movement, film director Tigran Khzmalyan told
a news conference on Tuesday.

“If Gagik Tsarukyan is a representative of opposition, then many will
be ashamed to call themselves oppositionists. If PAP is opposition,
then we are the authorities,” Khzmalyan said.

The film director said that the main mistake of all opposition
movements in Armenia’s history, including the movements led by first
Armenian President Levon Ter-Petrosyan in 2008 and by Heritage leader
Raffi Hovannisian in 2013, is that their leaders “tried to replace
the change of system by the change of power.”

“The change of power is a necessary but not sufficient condition. It
is merely a change of posts,” Khzmalyan said.

“On April 9, the people demanded a political program and we presented
it to the Heritage just like we once presented it to the Armenian
National Congress (ANC). Now we are going to present it ourselves,
and are not going to join anyone. The Pre-parliament civil initiative
is open to everyone. Raffi Hovannisian often repeated, “Lower the
party flags.” But on April 9, he himself held up a party flag,”
Khzmalyan said, adding that the pubic may familiarize with their
program during rallies, on May 9 in Gyumri and May 17 in Yerevan.

Prosecutor General Has A Lot Of Washing To Do

PROSECUTOR GENERAL HAS A LOT OF WASHING TO DO

The ANC has reported detailed information on the property of the
millionaire mayor of Yerevan Taron Margaryan and demanded to find out
the origin of his property within the framework of this report of
assumed crime.

What will the Office of the Prosecutor General do which is led by the
president emeritus of Nig Aparan Union of Compatriots? It seems that
there are all the grounds to deafen Vartan Oskanian’s scandalous case
by Taron Margaryan’s supersonic case.

It will take the Prosecutor General’s Office the same approach to the
Civilitas. It stated to protect the interests of the Civilitas from
Oskanian, its founder. If Aghvan Hovsepyan loves Armenia at least as
much as he loves the Civilitas, he will establish a wonderful
precedent of looking into the legality of property of a high-ranking
government official.

However, Aghvan Hovsepyan has already done everything he could. I do
not mean his assignment to investigators to rake in his papers and
find out the source of his millions of dollars.

Nig Aparan Union of Compatriots with its president emeritus who is
also the prosecutor general of Armenia has stated to support Taron
Margaryan.

One does not need vivid imagination to guess the follow-up of the ANC
report. It is not ruled out that Nig Aparan may claim responsible for
the property and announce that their union donated the property to
Taron Margaryan.

Nig Aparan stated to support him and now Taron Margaryan is in trouble
and needs support. Let alone the homeland and state, but Aghvan
Hovsepyan certainly cares about Taron Margaryan as much as he cares
about the Civilitas otherwise Nig Aparan would not hold out its
support. Consequently, the prosecutor general will do everything to
protect the interests of Taron Margaryan from the society.

Armenian Activist Slams ‘Fake Opposition’

ARMENIAN ACTIVIST SLAMS ‘FAKE OPPOSITION’

14:36 ~U 30.04.13

Tigran Khzmalyan of the Sardarapat group compares the Prosperous
Armenia party’s attempts to back opposition with what he calls a
political asphalting process.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the activist said that such efforts
are aimed at closing certain cracks, without thoroughly changing
the system.

Khzmalyan noted that siding with the opposition has turned somewhat
fashionable today, with the ruling Republican Party of Armenia being
in what he called a state of agony.

“Our boat is sinking, and that’s very serious. We are a unique state.

No country around the world has lost half of its population in twenty
years, let alone everything else,” he said, expressing concerns that
Armenia is little by little losing such important values as churches,
the Republic Square in central Yerevan (which is changing its image)
etc.

Khzmalyan noted that the existing problems in Armenia would be enough
for a government to resign in a European country or chose suicide in
case of being in Asia.
