EU willing to step up cooperation with Armenia – Lithuanian Justice

EU willing to step up cooperation with Armenia – Lithuanian Justice Minister

VILNIUS, Mar 06, BNS – The European Union is willing to step up its
connections with Armenia, Lithuania’s Justice Minister Juozas
Bernatonis said after a visit to Yerevan this week.

In his words, the EU takes the commitment of strengthening bilateral
cooperation in all areas of Eastern Partnership in line with the
obligations of Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union, the
Justice Ministry said in a press release issued on Friday.

During the visit in Armenia on Wednesday and Thursday, Bernatonis met
with Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan and Justice Minister Hovhannes
Manukyan to discuss legal reforms underway and economic cooperation
potential.

“I am highly satisfied with the justice cooperation between Lithuania
and Armenia – it is going smoothly. Lithuania is always ready to share
its experience, therefore, we are interested in stepping up the
cooperation in this field,” Bernatonis said at the meting with the
Armenian president.

According to the press release, bilateral trade volumes between
Lithuania and Armenia are on the rise, with growing interest of
Lithuanian businessmen in the Armenian market. A Lithuanian business
mission to the Armenian capital Yerevan in the end of March is
expected to boost bilateral economic cooperation.

During the visit, a memorandum was signed between the Lithuanian and
Armenian ministries of justice. The meetings discussed legal reforms
and the importance of cooperation among countries of the Eastern
Partnership program.

Armenia, which is highly dependent upon Russian security guarantees,
in 2013 gave up its plans of signing the association agreement with
the EU and decided to join the Eurasian Union being established by
Russia.

Armeni, la lezione del genocidio

Avvenire. Italia

Armeni, la lezione del genocidio

Herman Vahramian
4 marzo 2015

Persiani, georgiani, armeni, greci bizantini ecc. subirono numerosi
In epoca moderna, invece, i

L’impero ottomano, ormai in
greche e poi curde, irachene, nestoriane, siriane, libiche, balcaniche

nell’odierna Turchia). La penisola anatolica (in greco anatolì, ossia
“oriente”) venne svuotata dell’elemento armeno, ebreo, greco,
pure seriamente minacciata (35mila morti nell’ultima guerra civile).

guerra civile interconfessionale…), Baku, Baghdad, Erevan, Algeri,
In tutti questi
quotidianamente ancora ci arrivano attraverso i mass media – sotto
Basti

sopravvissuti armeni, ebrei, bosniaci, ceceni, zingari, vietnamiti,

Video reveals appalling dog cull as Azerbaijan clears streets ahead of
European Games

Animal rights campaigners allege that authorities in capital Baku are
killing the dogs ahead of hosting the European Games

ROSE TROUP BUCHANAN
Friday 06 March 2015

A shocking video has emerged of abused stray dogs being rescued ahead
of their execution in Azerbaijan as authorities

The footage, published by Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty, was shot by
animal rights campaigner Yelena Simakina on 27 February in the
Azerbaijani town of Baku, which will host the European Games in less
than 100 days.

The campaigner claims that authorities are shooting larger dogs on the
streets of Baku and killing the smaller one – two of which are seen
cowering under Ms Simakina’s hand – with shovels to save the bullets.

Warning: Viewers may find the following footage and images upsetting

Ms Simakina’s footage, which cannot be independently verified, appears
to show her in a large concrete courtyard. There appears to be blood
on the ground and in one corner there is an open fire, in which the
bodies of what appear to be dead dogs are burning.

Two animals are in the courtyard: a small dog and what appears to be a
puppy, which cowers under Ms Simakina’s hand as she attempts to
reassure the animal.

At the end of the video, Ms Simakina leaves the courtyard with the two
animals, one under her arm.

Her claims have been strongly denied by Azerbaijan’s presidential
office, who told RFE/RL that the video was a fake and aimed at
discrediting the country.

One of the animals cowers as help appearsSimilar footage of Baku
authorities appearing to mistreat animals has emerged in the past.

In 2013 a video purportedly showed men dragging dogs into the back of
a van, clearly marked in Azeri with ‘Baku Executive Authority,’ and
killing the canine in front of children.

The latest video may reopen the debate raging since 2012 – when the
Azerbajani capital hosted the Eurovision Song Contest – which saw
stray dogs killed by authorities in one of the biggest civic
initiatives in years as part of an attempt to smarten up the city
ahead of the international attention.
