“FOREIGN MINISTER” OF “NAGORNO KARABAKH REPUBLIC” DOESN’T RULE OUT PROSPECT FOR RETURN OF KARABAKH TO AZERBAIJAN

APA
June 21 2013
Azerbaijan

Baku – APA. “There are certain prospects and hopes.

But I don’t want to engage in propaganda, however I consider that
Azerbaijan must first change the policy of national, religious
and racial discrimination and hatred towards Armenians,” said
“foreign minister” of “Nagorno Karabakh Republic” Karen Mirzoyan in
his interview with France-24 while commenting on the possibility of
return of Nagorno Karabakh to Azerbaijan, APA reports.

The answer of Karen Mirzoyan caused a sharp reaction in the occupied
territories of Azerbaijan. “Spokesman for “Nagorno Karabakh Republic
President” David Babayan said that there are some misunderstandings in
the interview: “He could not issue such a statement, it is impossible.

Even a madman can not speak like that. I reiterate that if he
issued such a statement, he could not be foreign minister of Nagorno
Karabakh.”

Dictator Provokes Scandal Over Remarks About Nagorno-Karabakh

DICTATOR PROVOKES SCANDAL OVER REMARKS ABOUT NAGORNO-KARABAKH

Charter 97, Belarus
June 21 2013

The Belarusian MFA refutes the dictator’s remarks he made during his
visit to Kyiv.

Novosti-Armenia news agency has learnt it from deputy foreign ministry
of Armenia Shavarsh Kocharian.

The matter is Lukashenka’s remark about the situation of
Nagorno-Karabakh cited by the newspaper Izvestia v Ukraine. Armenia
thinks the interview of the Belarusian ruler contains “unacceptable
words” about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

According to the newspaper, Lukashenka said: “What concerns
Nagorno-Karabakh, how it looks, how people live and work there.

There’s no normal life there. I understood that the problem must be
solved. I talked to one president, then to the other. I explained
that the situation couldn’t continue like that. The Armenians agreed
with me. I talked to Ilham Aliyev and he said he wasn’t against. But
I hate the role of a mediator. I suggested that Ukraine should play
this role, but they didn’t want it.”

Yerevan didn’t like the remark by the Belarusian ruler about the
absence of “normal life” in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Armenian MFA says.

Yerevan remained satisfied with the reply of the Belarusian side,
but other questions appeared.

“According to the information from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of
Belarus, Lukashenka didn’t make statements with such words. Moreover,
the president of Belarus didn’t give an interview to Izvestia Ukrainy
during his official visit to Ukraine,” Kocharian said.

It turns out that the Belarusian MFA tries to convince their Armenian
counterparts that the interview with Ukrainian journalists was a fake.

IRANIAN 1ST VP FELICITATES ARMENIAN PM ON REAPPOINTMENT

Fars News Agency, Iran
June 20 2013

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian First Vice-President Mohammad Reza Rahimi in
a message congratulated Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan on
his reappointment.

In his message, Rahimi referred to the age-old relations between the
two countries, and expressed hope for the expansion of ties between
Iran and Armenia in all fields.

Iran has long taken various diplomatic initiatives to expand its ties
with the neighboring states.

In recent years, Iran and its Northern neighbor Armenia have boosted
cooperation, signed agreements on energy cooperation and agreed to
cooperate in technology and research and to enhance ties in commerce
and economy.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Armenian counterpart
pledged in December 2011 to further expand “high-level relations”
between their nations and, in particular, give new impetus to the
implementation of joint energy projects that have fallen behind
schedule.

In early October, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and his
Armenian counterpart Eduard Nalbandian met at the UN Headquarters
in New York to discuss bilateral ties and regional and international
issues.

Stability in North Caucasus cannot be ensured without Karabakh
settlement – EU Council President

BRUSSELS June 21

– Stability in the North Caucasus cannot be ensured without the
Karabakh settlement, EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy said.

At the meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilkham Aliyev on Friday, Van
Rompuy said the European Union backed the efforts taken by the OSCE
Minsk Group and its principles of the settlement of the conflict – the
renunciation of use of force, the observance of territorial integrity
and the rights of ethnic minorities.

Aliyev said, “The principle of self-determination of nations cannot
run counter the states’ territorial integrity.”

The meeting also focused on democratic reforms and Azerbaijan’s
participation in the Eastern Partnership, which was set up to allow
former USSR republics to take part in the EU structures.

Presidential elections in Azerbaijan due to take place in October will
be the indicator of democratic reforms in the republic, Van Rompuy
said.

How the past has shaped Armenian’s future

Saturday, Jun 22, 2013, 19:02 IST | Place: Mumbai
Joanna Lobo

Bhaswati X Bhattacharya is a fellow in residence at the Centre for
Modern Indian Studies at Gottingen. She has published articles in
academic journals and has been working to publishing a book on her
research into the Armenian community which will be released soon.

What is your book about?

The book is about Armenians in India from 1700 to 1947. I begin with
the trade network in the pre-colonial period, see what is changing in
the colonial times, how the identity formation takes place during the
late colonial period, and the effects of all this on the current
situation of the community.

What is your interest in Armenians in India?

If you mean how I got interested in the subject: as a PhD student of
Indian maritime commerce I found Armenians being mentioned in all
European sources. My inquiry took me to their church in Barabazar, the
Armenian College and a few leading members of the community in
Calcutta. It was while talking to them that I decided to pursue this
research as a post-doctoral research.

What has your research revealed?

Writing about Armenian commerce in the pre-colonial period, Armenian
scholars tend to show the importance of New Julfa in Persia in this
network. New Julfa was important as it was the main centre of
Armenians in the East since the evacuation of rich merchants and
others of Julfa in Armenia in early seventeenth century by the Persian
Emperor Shah Abbas. But my research demonstrates why from the late
17th century Indian settlements became important for Armenians, and
how from the early 18th century Armenians in these settlements became
more and more financially independent of New Julfa (commercial contact
notwithstanding). My research emphasises how, beginning from scratch
sometimes, these merchants built up their networks, based at places
like Madras, Calcutta etc. The identity formation in the colonial
period is an eye-opener.

Do you think the community in India will remain just a footnote in
history or will there be a revival?

The community needs to open up and broaden their horizons a bit, and
not focus on a single entity or region else they will remain just a
footnote. However, I see change coming from other corners that have
raised hopes and are good, healthy signs. Armenian and Indian citizens
marrying without having to ask for the community’s approval. Armenia
always looked to the West but new business relations between Armenia
and India have begun in the wake of economic liberalisation. These
have opened up new opportunities and people are not looking up to the
old authorities.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan simply left Yerevan – source

Henrikh Mkhitaryan simply left Yerevan – source

18:48 – 22.06.13

Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Armenia’s leading goal scorer who is now in
Vienna, is said to have left the country out of anger with the fuss
over his possible transfer to the Liverpool. Football Club.

A source speaking to Armsport.am said he was utterly dispirited on
departure, hardly resisting his every single second in Armenia.

`He never before felt such a restraint in his native city. People who
had nothing to do with football began making speculations over his
transfer in Yerevan in an attempt to exacerbate the situation. They
can harm Mkhitaryan,’ said the source.

The sportsman’s mother, Marina Tashchyan, has joined him in the
Austrian capital where she is reportedly taking part in a training
program.

As for the transfer, the source said that an agent of Makhachkhala’s
Anzhi (Russia), who visited Yerevan ahead of the Armenia-Malta match,
tried to talk the sportsman into joining his club.

`The Russian club is ready to pay bigger sums than does Liverpool. The
salary will be much higher, but Henrikh wishes to play in England or
any other European country. The agent, who represented Anzhi’s
interests, had arrived in Yerevan four days before the Armenia-Malta
match and stayed here till the Armenian team’s departure for Denmark.
Fortunately he didn’t go to Denmark,’ the source explained.
