ARMENIAN ST. BARTHOLOMEW MONASTERY IN VAN AGAIN ACCESSIBLE TO VISITORS

15:01 10.07.2013

The Armenian St. Bartholomew Monastery, located in the village of
Albayrak in Van province, is once again accessible to visitors,
Today’s Zaman reports.

The monastery had been inaccessible to visitors for many years
because military barracks had been built around it. However,
according to a report by the Radikal daily on Tuesday, the barracks
were recently moved outside the village as part of the settlement
process, launched by the government in October of 2012 to resolve
the country’s long-standing Kurdish problem.

The military barracks were moved to another location and as they
no longer encompass the monastery, people can freely visit the site
once again.

The monastery, which was built in the 13th or 14th century and was
renovated circa 1650, 1760 and 1877, is located atop a mountain facing
the ZapValley in Van’s BaÅ~_kale district. Access to the monastery was
forbidden 31 years ago by the Turkish military when the barracks were
built there as a measure against attacks by the Kurdistan Workers’
Party (PKK). Having fallen into a state of disrepair, the roof has
been completely destroyed, and if the monastery is not restored soon,
the remaining walls risk crumbling. The structure as it is today has
traces of 19th century architectural restoration.

According to Radikal, Van Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism
head Muzaffer Aktug has said that the monastery is in poor condition
after not having been restored in decades. He added that the Culture
and Tourism Ministry recently launched a large-scale restoration
project for the monastery and that the directorate is expending great
efforts to restore the province’s historical monuments and open them
to tourists.

Free Democrats: Armenian Government Must Refuse Selling Object Of St

FREE DEMOCRATS: ARMENIAN GOVERNMENT MUST REFUSE SELLING OBJECT OF STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE

Free Democrats urge the government must refrain from sale of
such a strategic resource as 20% of the government stake in ARG
to Russia because these assets keep from selling this company to
an undesirable buyer. According to the Free Democrats, this deal
will solve short-term issues. The authorities of Armenia are trying
to present this process only as an economic deal but it is evident
that they are trying to cover up the issue which endangers even more
the energy security of Armenia, the statement runs. – See more at:

Kim Kardashian Follows Armenian Tradition With Baby Nori

KIM KARDASHIAN FOLLOWS ARMENIAN TRADITION WITH BABY NORI

13:45, 9 July, 2013

YEREVAN, JULY 9, ARMENPRESS: The reality star is following the
Armenian tradition of staying at home for 40 days after the birth
of her daughter North West, as rpeorts Armenpress, sources told this
X17online exclusively.

For the first 40 days after birth, only relatives are allowed to
see the infant, at which point the family usually takes the child
to church. Kim’s sister Kourtney did this with both son Mason and
daughter Penelope, and while it is a religious tradition, it’s also
seen to have health benefits as the baby isn’t exposed to bacteria
outside of the house.

Kim gave birth on June 15, so she has about 20 days to go.

Following The Resignation Of Bishop Zakarian Norvan

FOLLOWING THE RESIGNATION OF BISHOP ZAKARIAN NORVAN

Translated from French

Renaissance Paris alert the Armenian-French community and the Armenian
Apostolic Church on moral and institutional crisis that risks plunging
the Armenian community in France following the resignation of the
Primate of his diocese. It calls on all authorities and persons
of the diocese, as well as dependent Catholicossate Etchmiadzin,
to measure the extent of changes that can lead to resignation.

Armenian-Renaissance Paris invites to consider the following points:

1. Replacing a respected religious leader for his high spiritual and
human values is a challenge.

2. Significant differences in operation are at the origin of the
current relationship problems between Armenia and the Diaspora. In the
management of national institutions, the post-Soviet elites emphasize
the verticality of power, lack of transparency in the management and
non-democratic centralization, whereas the Armenian citizens of France
demanding transparency, democracy and decentralization.

3. In addition, centralized hierarchies do not sufficiently take into
account the cultural and legal specificities of France.

Armenian-Renaissance Paris invites all elected bodies of worship
and their parishioners to assert their rights under the democratic
constitution of their church. As for the Princes of the Apostolic
Church, she invites them to turn to smaller, relieve their pain and
suffering and to radically change their modes of governance.

Emergency Situation In Armenia

EMERGENCY SITUATION IN ARMENIA

The government of Armenia is facing the issue of preventing the
domino effect of inflation in Armenia in order to avoid another wave
of dissatisfaction of the society. Resources are searched to repress
the price rise. Some of the oligarchs may be asked not to raise the
prices of their products.

The situation is an emergency, and the government has launched fire
extinguishing operations. The question occurs at the expenses of
what the fire will be extinguished. Compensation or repression of
price increase requires money. Does the Armenian government have
money? Will personal savings be invested in the economy, or the
compensation of the repression will be held on account of further
debts not only foreign, but also home taken from local oligarchy and
repaid by promises or privileges.

This is a very high price for Armenia which has been paying already too
much, since the very first years of independence and especially after
the ceasefire, to the clans, oligarchic groups and military-feudal
figures.

The issue is that this process should stop in Armenia and these groups
need to start paying the state and not vice versa. It is very important
to extinguish the fire taking into account the social-psychological
state of the population, but the effect will be short-term, because
economic rules of Armenia are a fire risk. Economy is a phenomenon
which in small countries is under the influence of permanent risks.

Economic competition and freedoms of the creative environment are
the firefighting systems, which are always ready to respond in case
of smoke. In Armenia’s economy “fire extinguishers” are used which
is an outdated and inefficient technology. When the fire burns in
the economy, in Armenia firefighting systems don’t respond, but fire
extinguishers are immediately used, because there is no firefighting
system, no competition and economic freedom.

In Armenia this system needs to develop, otherwise the fire maybe
extinguished today, but the level of economic and social security
won’t rise. More it will further reduce because the price will be
paid by the state and won’t be compensated. Therefore every time
paying a price, the government gets closer to the insolvency border.

It is natural that those who “lend” resources to the state for
using the “fire extinguishers” are not interested in the creation of
firefighting systems. They are for example Russia, which subsidies
the gas price, or the local oligarchy, which can blackmail the state
with the inflation demanding guarantees and further privileges.

In this matter, the local oligarchy and Russia are allies, because it
stems from their interest that the state turns to them for help. The
state, in this case the political power, turns to them, instead of
carrying out systemic changes. It is clear that the state interest
is subordinated to the interests of the power.

Consequently, if someone from the power announced that they are doing
everything in order to rule out inflations, to repress prices, it may
seem social caring attitude towards the citizens, but on the other
hand, it may be promotion of the current system.

State policy requires immediate steps in Armenia aimed at economic
competition and freedoms, which will empower the society to resist
to inflation on their own and will reduce t he social burden of the
state giving more possibilities to it to help the layer of the society
which is unable to use the possibilities, which does not have enough
physical or intellectual potential to express its creative capacities
under competitive conditions.

Only statements are issued about this policy in Armenia, on the
practical plane, the power is still obeying the economic bludgeon of
Russia and oligarchy.
