State Department Slams Baku For Blocking U.S. Delegation Visit

STATE DEPARTMENT SLAMS BAKU FOR BLOCKING U.S. DELEGATION VISIT

September 11, 2013 – 11:26 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – The visit by a U.S. delegation to Azerbaijan has
been postponed until after the country’s Oct 9 presidential election.

According to RFE/RL, a spokesperson for the U.S. embassy in Baku said
the visit, which was to have been led by Deputy Assistant Secretary
of State Thomas Melia, was postponed at the request of the Azerbaijani
government.

The delegation had been expected in Baku from the Georgian capital,
Tbilisi, on Sept 9 to observe preparations for the presidential poll.

In Tbilisi, Melia’s delegation met with officials to discuss
preparations for Georgia’s Oct 27 presidential election. The U.S.

embassy in Baku expressed regret and added that the embassy continues
to monitor the pre-election environment in Azerbaijan and to encourage
a free and fair electoral process.

Using unusually direct and decidedly undiplomatic language, the U.S.

Department of State has sharply criticized Baku for the surprise move.

In a sign that the State Department may be edging away from
its flawed practice of artificial even-handedness in public
statements about Armenia and Azerbaijan, U.S. diplomats have begun
specifically “laundry-listing” Baku’s many democratic shortcomings and
corruption-based problems, the Armenian National Committee of America
(ANCA) said.

The State Department issued the following statement: “The U.S. regrets
that the government of Azerbaijan has objected to the composition of
a U.S. delegation that was to make an official pre-election visit to
Azerbaijan. As a result, the visit will not take place. The Azerbaijani
government’s actions raise questions about the environment leading
up to the Oct 9 presidential election. We call on the government of
Azerbaijan to ensure a free and fair electoral process that reflects
the will of the people. We urge Azerbaijani authorities to respect
the freedoms of assembly, association, and speech as well as the rule
of law and due process before, during, and after the presidential
contest. We also urge the authorities to facilitate the important
work of domestic as well as international election monitors.”

Soccer: Armenia Vs Denmark 0-1 Highlights Match Report Score 2013

ARMENIA VS DENMARK 0-1 HIGHLIGHTS MATCH REPORT SCORE 2013

Premier Football News
Sept 10 2013

Daniel Agger kept Denmark’s hopes of qualification for the World Cup
alive from the penalty spot as his side defeated 10-man Armenia in
Tuesday’s Group B match in Yerevan.

Agger did not miss from 12 yards after Varazdat Haroyan brought down
Viktor Fischer in the 73rd minute, placing the ball into the bottom
left corner to beat Armenia goalkeeper Gevorg Kasparov.

Haroyan was shown a red card for the challenge on Fischer after it
earned him his second booking of the night – his first came in the
second minute for a foul on Nicki Bille Nielsen.

The result means Denmark have 12 points while Armenia remain on nine,
with Italy leading the group comfortably .

Denmark dominated the game and had two early chances denied by
Kasparov, who blocked a Bille Nielsen volley from the left of the
area before saving Christian Eriksen’s 20-yard effort.

Eriksen was again denied by the Armenia stopper just before the break,
with Marcos Pizzelli wasting a rare chance for the home side when he
sent a weak shot over the bar from distance just after the hour mark.

Denmark goalkeeper Stephan Andersen had little to do but he easily
denied Aras Ozbiliz in the 72nd minute before a rash challenge by
Haroyan changed the course of the game.

Denmark Coach: Armenia Defeat "Our 9/11"

DENMARK COACH: ARMENIA DEFEAT “OUR 9/11”

twentyfour7 Football
Sept 10 2013

Denmark coach Morten Olsen faces a backlash after comparing their
4-0 defeat to Armenia last July as their 9/11.

The insensitive comments, which were made in the pre-match press
conference, come just days before the anniversary of the September 11th
terrorist attacks that brought New York and the world to a standstill.

When questioned about the unexpected result last July Olsen said,
“Maybe it is hard to compare, and probably we should not compare,
but football wise [the 4-0 defeat to Armenia] was our September 11th.”

The 64-year-old was quick to apologise via the Danish official Twitter
account, “I’m sorry if my comparison – despite my reservations –
inadvertently offended some people.”

The Danes travel to Armenia tonight in their second qualifier against
the minnows.

Denmark currently lie in fifth place in their World Cup qualifying
group.

No Integration Process Must Absolve Us Of Responsibility For Our Cou

NO INTEGRATION PROCESS MUST ABSOLVE US OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR COUNTRY’S FUTURE – SAMVEL FARMANYAN

21:27 10.09.13

Samvel Farmanyan, a Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) parliamentary
group member, made a statement in Parliament on Tuesday. The statement
deals with Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union and reads in
particular:

“Following lengthy discussions, Armenia’s decision to join the
Customs Union was announced. Despite the fact that Armenia’s public
and political forces do not yet have the full idea of all the arguments
and our country’s expectations underlying the decision, as well as the
truth that, whatever we may say now, it is only further developments,
in a broad historical context, that can reveal such crucial decisions
being wrong or right, a number of reasons for the decision can be
presented now.

1. Our society is indifferent to long-term development prospects
in the country, which arouses concern. The positions of political
figures, forces and public circles, which have so far been stated –
even in the case of such a momentous issue – are pursuing the political
interests of the moment and are not anchored to sincere ideas of the
country’s long-term development and, in some cases, are derivatives
of Armenia’s external commitments, which arouses concern as well.

2. The discussions of the issue once more revealed our centuries-old
fixation that Armenia’s existence depends on being the auspices of
a great power, “either… or” logic and inevitability of a historic
decision. I wonder how many times history has to punish us for us to
come to realize that being the center of a conflict and of geopolitical
interests will never lead to the country’s progress.

3. If greater concern is the fact that this decision is viewed in the
context of alternatives – peace or war – which is, first of all, far
from the reality. Secondly, it diverts the public from a particular
problem. Integration into any structures will not resolve the problems
facing our country nor will it settle the issue of national security.

Solutions to such problems are only in our hands and no integration
process is supposed to absolve us of the responsibility for our
country’s future.

4. And finally, whatever future we choose, it must be our own choice
in our interests.

Armenia Should Join Customs Union For Nagorno-Karabakh’s Sake – MP

ARMENIA SHOULD JOIN CUSTOMS UNION FOR NAGORNO-KARABAKH’S SAKE – MP

20:00 10.09.13

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, Rubik Hakobyan, a Heritage
parliamentary group member, proposed Armenia’s joining the Customs
Union, which is ready to recognize independent Nagorno-Karabakh.

That is, the proposal is that “Nagorno-Karabakh be the guideline”
in dealing with different issues. In this context, the MP added that
Armenia should do its utmost to clearly state its positions on its
national security to the international community.

Hakobyan noted that both Russia and the European Union (EU)
are applying double standards to Nagorno-Karabakh. Most of the EU
member-states have recognized independent Kosovo, and “at least Russia
should be well aware that Nagorno-Karabakh is a fuller-fledged state
than South Ossetia and Abkhazia.”

Indeed, recognition of Nagorno-Karabakh as an international entity
is a much better security guarantee “than Russian Smerch or Chinese
weapons.”
