FARMERS SHARE RAISINS TO HELP ST. GREGORY’S IN FOWLER

St. Gregory The Illuminator Armenian Apostolic Church in Fowler is
nestled in a part of Fresno County that is known as raisin capital
of the world.

Nearly half of St. Gregory’s 150 dues-paying members are raisin
growers or have farming roots in their family history.

Raisins are like gold.

So when it comes to fundraisers, the Fowler church, consecrated on
April 11, 1910, is tapping into what’s in its neighborhood.

For the third season now, church officials are asking parishioners
who are raisin growers to donate bins of raisins – rather than cash –
to the church’s fundraiser, known as the Raisin Roundup.

Letters were sent in August to more than 300 people on the church
mailing list. The plan is simple. Growers sign up to donate a bin or
two. Then, members of St. Gregory’s parish council pick up the bins
and deliver them to local packers, where the church is paid the going
rate per ton. It takes about two bins to reach a ton. In recent years,
the rate has ranged between $1,700 and $2,000 a ton.

In 2011, the Raisin Roundup’s first campaign, 24 bins were donated.

They weighed about 12 tons. The going rate was $1,700, so St. Gregory
made about $20,000.

Last year, 18 bins weighed nearly 9 tons and raised about $14,000.

The money each year goes into the church’s general fund, which is
used for the church’s annual budget. This year, St. Gregory’s budget
is $250,000.

The Rev. Yeghia Hairabedian, pastor of St. Gregory, says parishioners
have been giving crops to their churches for a long time.

“Traditionally, the church would receive animals or food crops to
support the church and clergy,” he says. “It goes back to centuries-old
customs.”

Hairabedian believes the Raisin Roundup is a creative way for
parishioners to give as well as think about how God has blessed them.

“This is a very active way of encouraging people to give from the
abundance that God grants to them,” he says.

“In the case of grapes, this is especially significant because every
August on the Feast of the Virgin Mary – mother of God – we celebrate
her honor with the blessing of grapes on the holy altar, and grapes
celebrate our thanksgiving offering to God.”

David Shapazian was chairman of St. Gregory’s parish council in
2011, when the church first discussed asking raisin growers in the
congregation to give part of their crop – and others to come on board.

“We’re based in Selma and Fowler, the raisin capital of the world,”
he says. “Why not ask someone to donate a bin of raisins instead of
a cash donation?

“It’s been a real eye-opener, a success. We’re pretty happy with it.”

So far this year, the Raisin Roundup has signed up promises from
growers to donate 10 bins. The campaign runs through the end of
September when prices will be determined.

Shapazian has stayed closely involved in the campaigns.

“I am willing to get every bin,” he says. “I say, ‘Have a bin? Where
is it? I’ll go get it.’ ”

Growers receive a tax write-off for their donations, but the growers
who have donated to the Raisin Roundup say their reasons for giving
are more than for tax deductions.

“There are quite a bit of farmers at our church,” says Dennis Peters,
a St. Gregory parishioner for nearly 40 years. He farms about 300
acres, with grapes, peaches, plums and tangerines, between Fowler
and American avenues.

“Armenians, when they came here to the Valley, went into farming and a
lot of them still pass on their farms to family. Others pursue other
career, but they have kept the farm and farm on the side.

“It’s just a nice way to give some money to the church, by giving a
little bit of your crops.”

Service Life Of Armenian Nuclear Power Plant To Be Extended Until 20

SERVICE LIFE OF ARMENIAN NUCLEAR POWER PLANT TO BE EXTENDED UNTIL 2026

YEREVAN, September 13, /ARKA/. Armenian energy and natural resources
minister Armen Movsisyan said today after a government session that
the service life of the Armenian nuclear power plant will be extended
by ten years up to 2026.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said after talks with his Armenian
counterpart Serzh Sargsyan in Moscow on September 3 that experts
from Russian state nuclear company Rosatom will help Armenian peers
to extend the service life of the Armenian nuclear power plant in
Metsamor for another 10 years until 2026.

“Armenia and Russia continue to cooperate in the nuclear energy field.

Rosatom and Armenian experts have agreed to concentrate efforts on
the implementation of a project to extend the service life of the
Armenian nuclear power plant for 10 years until 2026”, Putin said
according to RIA Novosti.

The Armenian government decided also today to allow the Armenian
nuclear power plant cjsc to export nuclear materials. Minister
Movsisyan explained that this means that Armenia will move to Russia
seven cassettes with nuclear fuel brought to Armenia in 1979-1987
and not used because of technical faults.

The Armenian nuclear power plant is located some 30 kilometers west
of Yerevan. It was built in the 1970s but was closed following
a devastating earthquake in 1988. One of its two VVER 440-V230
light-water reactors was reactivated in 1995. According to experts,
the plant can operate until 2016, however, the EU insists on shutting
it down. -0-

Perhaps Kremlin Got Rid Of Bugbear

PERHAPS KREMLIN GOT RID OF BUGBEAR

James Hakobyan
Comments – Friday, 13 September 2013, 15:23

In Bishkek the summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organization kicked off.

The member states and observers attended it. The presidents of its
member states Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and
Tajikistan met in Bishkek. The heads of Iran, Mongolia and Afghanistan
have joined them. The secretaries general of Eurasian Union, CSTO,
as well as the executive secretary of CIS, the UN deputy secretary
general and the representatives of Pakistan and India will also
participate in the summit. One of the key issues on the agenda is
Syria. It would be ingenuous to think that the summit will consider
Armenia’s wish as well. The wish to get an observer status in SCO,
not the wish to join the Customs Union is meant. A few days ago the
prime minister of Armenia told the prime minister of China. The prime
minister of China noted that Beijing will discuss the issue with the
SCO member states two or three days before the summit in Bishkek. This
is, perhaps, one of the best opportunities to discuss the issue of
Armenia, at least informally, if certainly Putin has not forgotten
about Armenia. Someone in Armenia should make a precautionary call
and make a reminder because the world powers are too busy now with
other things, and they may not remember for several more years that
Armenia has expressed such a wish. Interestingly, Armenia first told
about this wish to Beijing, at least publicly. Meanwhile, it would be
logical to tell first the “strategic partner” which is an SCO member
too. Perhaps, Yerevan thought that Beijing could be jealous. So why
can’t Russia be jealous that Yerevan first applies to Beijing. It is
not ruled out that this request is an Armenian-Russian agreement. In
other words, on September 3 Armenia may have discussed the issue
with Putin who proposed asking China first. The point is that China
and Russia are SCO leaders. If Armenia turned to Russia first, and
Moscow were unable to refuse, it would be the “hostage” of the issue of
granting Armenia an SCO observer status. If China refused, that would
indicate Moscow’s weakness and ceding to China, it might have to reach
agreements on some other issues, reaching a compromise with Beijing.

Certainly, Moscow will not have to make a compromise with Beijing
for the sake of Armenia. Therefore, the Kremlin advised Yerevan to
talk to Beijing first, getting rid of a bugbear, especially that it
got what it wanted.

"Factheber": Azerbaijani Terrorists Fighting In Syria Are Not Liable

“FACTHEBER”: AZERBAIJANI TERRORISTS FIGHTING IN SYRIA ARE NOT LIABLE IN THEIR HOMELAND

10:00 13/09/2013 ” REGION

“According to unofficial data, about 250 Azerbaijani Wahhabis are
fighting today in Syria. Also there are a lot of “mujahideens”
who have been wounded and have returned home. But the question is,
whether these Azerbaijanis will be criminally liable for their
return to Azerbaijan?” reads the article of Hayal Shukur, published
in Azerbaijani website “Factheber.”

The author notes that Azerbaijan is often quoted as a country that
is fighting the terrorism, however on this background the Azerbaijani
terrorists are fighting in Syria, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The article
says that in addition to disseminated information about the deaths
of Azerbaijani Wahhabis, fighting among terrorist groups in Syria,
also their bodies were sent out.

Hayal Shukur wonders whether the Azerbaijani citizens carry criminal
responsibility by the law, for joining the armed terrorist groups in
foreign countries. Prominent lawyer, Aslan Ismailov and expert of
Scientific and Practical Law Center, a former police chief Mahmoud
Hajiyev, expressed interesting views in this regard.

Aslan Ismailov noted, “In Azerbaijan they are held criminally liable
only for violations committed inside the country. The criminal may
be prosecuted for a crime committed in a foreign country only if
the law enforcement agencies of that state appeal to Azerbaijan in
connection with this crime. The same applies to the abovementioned
Wahhabis. They can be arrested only upon presentation of evidence by
the Syrian authorities on this regard.”

In his turn Mahmoud Hajiyev, noted that there are a lot of gaps in the
Azerbaijani legislation, and the Azerbaijani MPs manipulate the laws.

“Are the laws in the country observed to talk about the responsibility
for the crimes [committed] out of the country? You must first correct
the errors in the country in order to get to the other countries. Our
legislation does not have an act, concerning the Azerbaijanis fighting
abroad,” he said and noted that the process of Azerbaijani citizens
joining the foreign armed groups became widespread in the past
few years.

During the last period the media reports about a number of deaths of
Azerbaijani terrorists in Syria. In early April, the Turkish sites have
reported that about 30 terrorists from Azerbaijan have already been
killed in Syria. According to the Azerbaijani conflict scientist Arif
Yunus more than 300 Islamists from Azerbaijan are fighting in Syria,
Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, according to Arif Yunus and the
“Facthaber” portal, over 100 Azerbaijani terrorists are fighting in
Syria. Azerbaijani terrorists had even placed an online video-record
calling for “jihad.”

The relationship between international terrorist groups and Azerbaijan
originated in the early 1990s. That time, the Azerbaijani army,
having failed in the aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh Republic
(NKR), retreated with losses. Trying to save the situation, the
Azerbaijani leadership, headed by Heydar Aliyev involved in the war
carried out against the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh international
terrorists and members of radical groups from Afghanistan (groupings
of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar), Turkey (“Grey Wolves”, etc.), Chechnya
(groupings Basayev and Raduyev etc.) and some other regions.

Despite the involvement of thousands of foreign mercenaries and
terrorists in the Azerbaijani army during the war, the Azerbaijani
aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh Republic failed, and the
authorities of Baku were forced to sign an armistice with the NKR and
Armenia. However, international terrorists found ties in Azerbaijan,
and used them in the future. Recruitment was carried out among
the Azerbaijanis, who then were sent to Afghanistan and the North
Caucasus, where participated in the battles against the forces of
the international coalition and Russian institutions.

In recent years, the citizens of Azerbaijan are actively involved in
terrorist and extremist activities in Russia, Afghanistan and Syria.

In Azerbaijan the citizens are brought to criminal liability for
participating in “illegal paramilitary groups” in Afghanistan,
sentenced to minor terms of imprisonment.

Saakashvili lashes out at Putin’s Eurasian Union plan

Saakashvili lashes out at Putin’s Eurasian Union plan

12:39 – 14.09.13

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili Wednesday went on the offensive
against newly elected Russian president Vladimir Putin’s brainchild;
the Eurasian union plan, Democracy&Freeom Watch reported.

Any attempt to resurrect the Soviet corpse in 2012 is destined to be
unsuccessful,’ Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili said during a
visit to Azerbaijan.

The first step was taken in November 2011 with the establishment of
the Eurasian Commission, which started work January 1, 2012. Russia,
Belarus and Kazakhstan have set a target to establish the Eurasian
Union by 2015.

Saakashvili was speaking during a working visit to his counterpart
Ilham Aliyev in neighboring Azerbaijan.

Some have seen the Eurasian Union as an attempt to restore the Soviet Union.

Saakashvili said the Soviet Union was destroyed by the people living
there `because people couldn’t bear it anymore’ and that people in
Azerbaijan and Georgia would never give up their freedom.

He continued outlining his views on Georgia’s relationship with its
neighbor Russia.

`It’s better having strong neighbors than unstable vassals; better to
have partners than enemies. Despite the propaganda, I don’t want to
see a weak Russia. In fact, I dream to see a stable, proud, confident
Russia, which won’t threaten other states to prove its power and which
will be able to provide a worthy life for its citizens and not feed
them with nostalgia instead of bread.’

The Georgian president said that Russian patriots are not Georgia’s
enemies. They want strong Russia, as Georgians want a strong Georgia,
or Azerbaijanis a strong Azerbaijan.

`They are our partners. One day we will create a common space for
peace and cooperation. We will do this with enthusiasm, because we
cannot change the geography and cannot delete the history. We cannot
do this and do not want to. This is our geography, common history. We
have common past and future to build together with Russia. I am sure
and no one can change my mind that the name of this future will be EU
and NATO. It doesn’t mean necessary severing relations with Russia. It
shouldn’t mean this,’ the Georgian president said.

Recalling his own decision to cancel visa requirements for Russian
citizens, he said this was equal to `sending invitations to 140
million Russians.’

Saakashvili said Azerbaijan and Georgia are confronting common challenges.

`Azerbaijan developed very fast and now is considered a large player
on the international arena. Your membership in the UN Security Council
is proof for this development. As real friend and strategic partner,
Georgia can only be proud of your success. I am here to underline how
vitally important the strategic partnership between our countries is.
Our friendship has been forming for centuries,’ Saakashvili said on
the last day of his two day visit to Azerbaijan.

Pasadena To Commemorate Armenian Genocide Of 1915 With Monument In M

PASADENA TO COMMEMORATE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE OF 1915 WITH MONUMENT IN MEMORIAL PARK

The Tribune
Sept 12 2013

PASADENA, California – Pasadena will commemorate the Armenian genocide
of 1915 with a monument in Memorial Park.

The Los Angeles Times reports () the City Council
unanimously approved a design for the memorial, which will include
a stone water basin straddled by a tripod of three columns.

A single drop of water will fall from the highest point every three
seconds, with each “teardrop” representing one life lost.

The nonprofit Pasadena Armenian Genocide Memorial Committee is raising
funds to erect the monument before the centennial observance of the
genocide in April 2015.

Organizers say Pasadena is a fitting home for the tribute because
the city was the first in Southern California to embrace Armenian
immigrants before and after the genocide.

The memorial was designed by Catherine Menard, a student at the Art
Center College of Design.

Armenian Power Gang Members Plead Guilty In LA

ARMENIAN POWER GANG MEMBERS PLEAD GUILTY IN LA

RAPSI, Russia
Sept 12 2013

MOSCOW, September 12 (RAPSI) – Eight individuals with such nicknames
as “Thick Neck” and – appropriately – “Guilty” pleaded guilty Tuesday
to charges connected with the activities of the so-called “Armenian
Power” gang in Los Angeles, California, the US Department of Justice
(DOJ) announced Wednesday.

The eight defendants were included alongside some 62 others to be
charged in a 140-count indictment with a range of offenses related
to the activities of the criminal enterprise, including among other
things drug trafficking and illegal firearms possession.

The eight individuals that pleaded guilty included four members and
associates of the gang, and four other individuals, according to
the statement.

29 of the 70 defendants were charged with participation in the
Armenian Power RICO Conspiracy. The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt
Organizations (RICO) Act, which essentially prohibits racketeering
in interstate and foreign business enterprises, aims to eradicate
organized crime.

According to the DOJ statement, “The RICO conspiracy charge alleges
a host of illegal activities, many of which involved sophisticated
fraudulent schemes of identity theft, bank fraud, credit card skimming,
manufacturing counterfeit checks and laundering criminal proceeds,
often electronically.”

Karo “Guilty” Yerkanyan, Arman “Thick Neck” Tangabekyan, Artur “Cham”
Pembejian, and Raymond “Rye” Tarverdyan were among the 29 charged
that pleaded guilty to racketeering conspiracy Tuesday.

The DOJ statement noted that, “In addition [to the RICO conspiracy
charge], defendants were involved in a variety of violent crimes,
such as extortion, kidnapping and firearms offenses.”

Beyond racketeering conspiracy, Guilty pleaded similarly to charges
of bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, conspiracy to possess and
intent to distribute marijuana, as well as a felon-in-possession of
a firearm charge.

Thick Neck additionally pleaded guilty to bank fraud and aggravated
identity theft.

Rye supplemented his racketeering conspiracy plea with one of bank
fraud, and Cham pleaded guilty only to racketeering conspiracy.

Four other individuals pleaded guilty to charges ranging from
aggravated identity theft to bank fraud.

The DOJ statement cites court documents in explaining that the
Armenian Power gang was formed in the Los Angeles district of East
Hollywood in the 1980s. It has been categorized as a street gang
under state law and is thought to have a membership of upwards of
250 documented members. The statement goes on to explain: “According
to court documents, Armenian Power members and associates regularly
carry out violent criminal acts, including murders, attempted murders,
kidnappings, robberies, extortions, and witness intimidation in order
to enrich its members and associates and preserve and enhance the
power of the criminal enterprise.”
