Boxing: James DeGale looking past Gevorg Khatchikian towards world t

The Times, UK
Feb 28 2014

James DeGale looking past Gevorg Khatchikian towards world title shot

by Ron Lewis, Boxing Correspondent

Having seen George Groves, his bitter rival, grab plenty of headlines
with his performance against Carl Froch, James DeGale continues a more
low-key route towards what he hopes will be a world title shot in
Bristol tomorrow evening.

DeGale, the 2008 Olympic gold medal-winner, faces Gevorg Khatchikian,
an unbeaten Dutchman who was born in Armenia, who is likely to provide
a stern workout before DeGale faces Badou Jack in a final eliminator
for the WBC super-middleweight title this summer.

“I’m very excited, I’m literally a fight away from the world title,”
DeGale said. “I’m not overlooking this guy on Saturday but it goes to
plan I could be world champion by September.”

History, as he is constantly reminded, is against DeGale, as no
British Olympic gold medal-winner has gone on to win a world title as
a professional. The 28-year-old Londoner is not one for self-doubt,
though, and having recovered from a groin injury that hampered his
ability to duck and throw with full power, he is expecting to put on a
good performance.

“I had something called Gilmore’s groin, which was a torn groin, so
the last couple of fights I’ve been fighting injured,” DeGale said.
“But I’ve got that sorted now, I had the operation, it’s mending well
and I’m feeling good. I feel like a parrot, as it feels like the last
couple of fights I’ve said the same thing, but I don’t want to make
excuses, I’m going to give a wicked performance.

“I’ve seen bits of my opponent and he’s game, he comes forward, he’s
an aggressive fighter, but the way I’m feeling, I can’t see this going
the 12 rounds.”

Should he get past Khatchikian, Jack – who is boxing Derek Edwards in
the United States tonight – should be next. Mick Hennessy, DeGale’s
promoter, made an offer to hold the bout in the UK, but Mayweather
Promotions, who promote Jack, did not reply. The venue for the bout
will now be decided by a purse bid on March 14.

“I’m feeling really good and I’m raring to go, it’s closing in now,”
DeGale said. “It would mean a lot, making history full stop, to be the
first Olympic gold medallist from Great Britain. To become a genuine
world champion is big and would be something special.”

Lee Haskins defends his British bantamweight title against Luke Wilton
on the Bristol show, which will be broadcast live on Channel 5.

Greed, inertia, or "excessive burying"? Why isn’t the dictators’ pun

Greed, inertia, or `excessive burying’? Why isn’t the dictators’
punishment becoming a lesson for others?

March 1 2014

Former Ukrainian President, Viktor Yanukovych’s pictures with golden
walls palaces flooded the entire media. The topic about Yanukovych’s
greed and his punishment has become topical today. It seems that such
a negative public reaction and bringing Yanukovich to responsibility
can become a lesson for other leaders, whose obsession is the
appropriation of public funds. Anyway, the experience and history show
that dictators’ punishment and their abandoned palaces are not
becoming lessons for other leaders. The evidence of what was said is
the life imprisonment of the former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak,
what happened with the Romanian dictator CeauÈ’escu, and so on. What is
this? A greed, or this phenomenon has a different name? Aravot.am
talked with ethnographer Hranush Kharatyan regarding these issues. She
noted, `In all of these examples, specific individuals and their power
and management circles have not passed preparation in use of power. I
think under bringing to responsibility they have always found
leverages to evade from responsibilities and evade the law. In these
cases, the court and the prosecutor’s office are supporting, or there
are always guarantees, for example, Russia in this case, and so on.’
The ethnographer believes that the inertia coming from Soviet morality
and the Soviet times plays a serious role in this matter. Ms.
Kharatyan, in particular, said, `We are all from the same moral plane,
where the appropriation of state property has not been a theft; there
was an opportunity for additional earnings. The Soviet trial court was
judging, the morality was rejecting. This morality has come until now
and the state property has become a perception of individual’s
ownership exercising power.’ Our observation that this perception is
still dominant in Armenia, Ms. Kharatyan responded as follows, `I
think that now a more rational judgment prevails among the civil
society activists. People see that this kind of concentration of power
in the hands of individuals, and the infamous appropriation of all
resources through personalities leads to a catastrophic situation.’
Ms. Kharatyan does not know under which mechanisms the control of
using levers of internal power there can be mutual control and
balanced situation. Alternatively, according to Hranush Kharatyan,
`will go to the square as Shant did and would say, `people, let’s
usurp the power `. To our final question of whether what happened to
Yanukovych will at least somehow make the leaders of Armenia sober up,
Ms. Kharatyan responded, `I do not believe, I very much doubt. Our
people are so much buried in all of these things that they can not
just come out of the daily swamp. They have so much mutual
responsibilities to each other and for each other. What? Can the
solution be exercising normal tax mechanisms? But, how? In the event
when they have taken money from these people, and be elected, and now
they say give me money, they will not give it.’

"There is no budget": Hrant Bagratyan – Video

“There is no budget”: Hrant Bagratyan – Video

17:04 | March 1,2014 | Politics

“Azatutyun” party will join to any movement, which would like to get
rid of these authorities. HAK deputy Hrant Bagratyan started his
speech by these words.

He brought with him Serzh Sargsyan’s campaign booklet of 2008, where
his promises are written, “He said that GDP must be doubled, he
promised that the wages must be doubled, but as a result the prices
increased by 40% and the country only went back during these 5 years.”

Hrant Bagratyan compared Armenia with the leaky barrel, “How money
flows from Russia, it flows back at the same way.”

He also turned to pension reforms- greeting the members of “I am
against” movement, “Serzh Sargsyan and Tigran Petrosyan ask if they do
something bad when they think about your prosperity? People, it is a
nonsense, it is not a way to think about a person. Let leave such
prosperity to them.”

HAK deputy is sure that there is no budget, for it only money is
gathered, “45000 shops were closed and only 20 supermarkets were
opened. 50000 people were busy in it and they left the country.”

“Everything is based on the pressure and robbery,”- summed up his
speech Hrant Bagratyan and added, “If they let you live well, you will
feel yourself as a man and would like democracy, which is not
beneficial for them. They won’t let you.”

Orphan rug is likely to remain orphaned

Reason.com: Orphan rug is likely to remain orphaned

14:43 01/03/2014 >> SOCIETY

Below, we present an article entitled “The Orphaned Rug,” published in
Reason.com.

In 1925, a group of orphans who had lost their parents to Turkey’s
genocide of Armenians presented this ceremonial rug to President
Calvin Coolidge. Despite the exertions of many activists and
historians, the rug has been kept away from public view since the
mid-1990s.

Armenian Americans have long suspected that the rug was warehoused
because the government of NATO ally Turkey does not want to see or
read any official-sounding communication that even broaches the
g-word. So when the publishers of a slim new volume titled President
Calvin Coolidge and the Armenian Orphan Rug asked the White House to
release the Ghazir artifact for a private book party in December, the
terse response was, “We regret that it is not possible to loan it out
at this time.”

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) responded by planning a historically
appropriate event that he hoped even the White House couldn’t refuse.
But Schiff’s initiative probably will end up in the same place as the
annual congressional drive to get the president to use the word
genocide on Armenian Remembrance Day (April 24): nowhere. As long as
Washington feels it has foreign policy needs that only Turkey can
supply, the orphan rug is likely to remain orphaned.

Football: No Coach For The Armenian National Football Team

NO COACH FOR THE ARMENIAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM

Vestnik Kavkaza, Russia
Feb 28 2014

28 February 2014 – 2:35pm

David Stepanyan, Yerevan. Exclusively for Vestnik Kavkaza

At the end of last year, the Football Federation of Armenia announced
the upcoming friendly match against Russia that will take place in
Krasnodar. Today, however, with the match less than a week away,
not only the Armenian squad for the match against the Russian players
(who were already stated by Fabio Capello) is unknown, but also the
name of the head coach of the Armenian team. The lack of coach is due
to Vardan Minasyan’s refusal to prolong his contract, which expired on
October 31 for the UEFA EURO 2016 qualification period. The 40-year-old
coach prefers a different course for his career, waiting for proposals
from abroad.

Nevertheless, the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA) has declared
its readiness to play a friendly match not only with Russia: on June
6 the Armenian players are to play another friendly match against
Germany. The FFA President, the infamous Armenian oligarch, Republican
Ruben Hayrapetyan, at the final press conference in 2013 attacked the
journalist who asked about the upcoming friendly matches, stating that
“it is silly to talk about friendly matches when there is no one to
steer the team.”

The matches have been announced, but there is no coach. In any case,
there is no information about his identity. Repeated attempts by our
reporters to contact the FFA in order to find out whether the team
has found a coach have failed. The FFA press secretary’s number
“does not exist”, Hayrapetyan’s private number does not respond,
and the Media section on the FFA site is empty.

Since the beginning of 2014 the Armenian media, which had been
flooded with names of the most improbable candidates to be the coach
of the Armenian team, are now keeping silence unanimously. Following
Minasyan’s resignation, the media suggested the names of various
candidates, mostly from South America, the last one was the name of
the Uruguayan Gregorio Perez.

Following the results of the toss of the qualifying tournament
for the European Championship 2016, which first was attended by 24
teams of the continent, Armenia was represented by the FFA Executive
Director Armen Minasyan. Group I, where the Armenian team ended up,
looks impressive. Apart from Armenia, the group includes Portugal,
Serbia, Albania and Denmark. The host country of EURO 2016 – France –
will only participate in the qualifying tournament at the level of
friendly matches.

Note that in the four years of Minasyan’s coaching, the national team
of Armenia achieved a breakthrough, rising from 99th to 30th position
in the FIFA rankings. Therefore, despite the serious competitors,
the Armenian team has a chance to go to France in 2016. And today,
the team led by Henrik Mkhitaryan, Yura Movsisyan, Araz Ozbilis and
Roman Berezovsky especially needs a competent coach who could solve
this serious problem.

The oligarch Hayrapetyan previously publicly stated that the
Federation has no intention of spending too much on inviting a top
coach, preferring to use the “millions of dollars to build football
schools.” According to the agency Pluri Consultoria, the “cost”
of the 30 highest paid football coaches in the world ranges from
2.35 to 17 million dollars. Against this background, the reluctance
of the FFA president to “spend” is most likely due to the lack of
this money in the FFA treasury. Therefore Hayrapetyan and the FFA
Executive Committee crave the return of Vardan Minasyan. The latter
has repeatedly refused to lead the team, waiting for invitations from
foreign clubs. Given that over the past five months Minasyan never
left Armenia, it is still likely that his name will be the one to be
announced at the last moment as the Armenian team coach.
