ANKARA: Why The Republic Was Not Celebrated Jubilantly

WHY THE REPUBLIC WAS NOT CELEBRATED JUBILANTLY

Today’s Zaman, Turkey
Oct 31 2013

31 October 2013 /BERAT OZİPEK, STAR
Republic Day, marking the founding of the Turkish Republic on Oct. 29,
1923, was celebrated with reserved ceremonies across the country and in
the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) rather than joyful ones.

One of my friends called the situation “poignant emotionlessness.” A
great majority of the public has been indifferent to Republic Day
celebrations. Cooperation between the public and the government
continued during the Turkish War of Independence but stopped when
Turkey gained victory. Devout Sunni Muslims witnessed dervish lodges
being closed down while religious officials were executed after the
victory. The Kurdish people who resisted the French siege during the
war faced anguished massacres and denial of their existence by the
government. Armenian, Greek and other minorities were “otherized”
while they were waiting for the government to bind their wounds.

Boxing: Darchinyan Ready For Donaire: I Will Come And Demolish Him,

DARCHINYAN READY FOR DONAIRE: I WILL COME AND DEMOLISH HIM, I AM COMING TO DESTROY HIM

Fight News

Former world champion Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan (39-5-1, 28
KOs) of Armenia is eager and ready for his rematch against former
world champion Nonito “Filipino Flash” Donaire (31-2, 20 KOs).

Darchinyan will get his shot at redemption when he takes on Donaire
next Saturday November 9 the American Bank Center in Corpus Christy,
Texas as part of a big HBO Boxing After Dark tripleheader.

“This is an important fight for me. I am training good. I will be
in the best shape,” Darchinyan promised when Fightnews.com caught up
with him at the Glendale Fight Club in Glendale, California. The 2000
Armenian Olympian turned pro shortly after the Olympics and launched
his pro career in Australia. He has been training in Glendale for
the last two months.

“Everything is good, I am very happy with my training. We have 9 more
days. This is the moment,” Darchinyan said about his training camp.

He has been sparring with 2012 Mexican Olympian Oscar Valdez in
preparation for Donaire. “Sparring with that kid Oscar is very similar
to Donaire. I think he is faster than Donaire,” Darchinyan said.

It was six years ago, when then undefeated Vic Darchinyan was
defending his IBF flyweight title for a seventh time against a
young and inexperienced challenger in Nonito Donaire. However a
monster left hook by Donaire to the jaw of Darchinyan floored him,
resulting in a fifth round knockout which received “Knockout” and
“Upset of the Year” honors.

“I didn’t know who he was six years ago,” said Darchinyan. “I made
him. No one ever heard of him. He was the number eight or nine
contender. Everyone knows if he didn’t get me with the left hook,
I would knock him out. I was coming out for a big punch. Everyone
thinks he is a big deal.”

Since the loss to Donaire, the “Raging Bull” moved up in weight then
went on to win another world title one year later when he knocked
out Dmitry Krilov for the IBF super flyweight title and three months
later became the unified super flyweight champion when he scored
another brutal knockout over Cristian Mijares winning the WBA & WBC
super flyweight titles. After conquering the super flyweight division
Darchinyan then moved up to participate in the Showtime Bantamweight
tournament in which he lost a close decision at the hands of Abner
Mares and then scored a technical decision win over former world
champion Yonnhy Perez.

“It was my first loss and after that I became undisputed champion
I proved to everyone that it was my mistake in the Donaire fight,”
Darchinyan explained.

The veteran hard hitting southpaw continued his run for a shot at
a world title but came up short in losing decisions to WBA super
bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno in December of 2011 and Japan’s
undefeated WBC bantamweight champion Shinsuke Yamanaka last year.

Darchinyan wasn’t done yet, however, as his experience and toughness
was the difference when he won a dominating unanimous decision
over previously unbeaten prospect Luis Orlando Del Valle. After his
promotional contract with promoter Gary Shaw had expired after the
fight with Del Valle, the Armenian pondered his options and future
where he signed with Top Rank as well as managerial contract with
Frank Espinoza. Darchinyan is coming off a fourth round knockout over
Javier Gallo in his Top Rank debut in May.

“I talked to Frank because I know with Gary Shaw I had nothing going.

I would never fight Donaire. I became number one contender at 122 for
the WBC so I talked with Frank and signed with him. I know what he
is about. So I told Frank to please talk to Top Rank and put a fight
with Donaire,” Darchinyan said. “I waited for this fight six years and
Gary Shaw couldn’t put it, thanks to Top Rank they gave me a rematch.”

Darchinyan-Donaire will be a ten round featherweight bout. Now just
over a week away from the rematch, Darchinyan is in the final phases
of his training camp as he is anxious to get back in the ring with
the man that handed him his first loss and knockout.

“I am still looking for the knockout. This time I won’t be silly with
one punch. This time I will use my skill. I know he is scared and
chicken. I am coming to prove it. I have been in with him, I know how
scared he is of my punches. I will come and demolish him. I am coming
to destroy him. I made him. I am coming to break him,” Darchinyan said.

“Mentally I am ready for this fight. I am coming to send him to
retirement. It is going to be a great fight. I will be ready. I am
coming to destroy him. I am coming to beat the 2012 Fighter of the
Year. I want to prove to everyone he is no one,” Darchinyan concluded.

Turkey’s Minorities Still Orphans On 90-Year Anniversary

TURKEY’S MINORITIES STILL ORPHANS ON 90-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

Assyrian International News Agency AINA
Oct 31 2013

Posted GMT 10-31-2013 1:36:15

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s gift for the 90th birthday of the
Republic of Turkey — proclaimed on Oct. 29, 1923 — was an Ottoman
dream come true. The Marmaray railway linking Istanbul’s two shores,
the dream of Sultan Abdulmecit 153 years ago, was inaugurated in a
ceremony attended by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Romanian
Prime Minister Traian Basescu, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud
and nine ministers from eight countries. Europe and Asia are now
connected via an undersea tunnel, but the pieces of Turkish society,
fractured by a singularist official ideology, are yet to be united
after nine decades.

Many groups — Kurds, whose identity was denied until recently;
assimilated ethnic minorities; troubled Christians; Alevis and Jafaris
ostracized on sectarian grounds; women who have paid dearly for
wearing the veil and people barred from public service on ideological
grounds — are all eager to see the republic mature in a way that
would embrace them all.

Even though EU-prompted reforms have led to significant progress, the
score-settling in society, perpetuated by the republic’s immaturity
problem, is continuing in the form of bickering over secularism,
Turkishness and identity. The tensions have marred the republic’s
anniversary celebrations.

Living with uneasiness

In its Oct. 29 issue, Radikal handed the pen to those the republic
has orphaned, and asked them to describe the republic of their dreams.

Rober Koptas, editor-in-chief of the Armenian minority’s Agos,
shared three striking memories. The first was about a basketball game
between the Turkish club Efes and the Greek Aris in 1993, when Koptas
was a student in Istanbul’s Surp Hac High School. He recalled how
after the Armenian boys rooted for Efes, their windows were broken
by stone-throwing Turks, who attacked the Armenian school to avenge
the attack on Efes players by Greek fans at the end of the game.

In a second story, Koptas recalled how his blood froze at the sight
of a poster he saw in Istanbul in 1989 on his way to the Karagozyan
Orphanage. The poster read, “The Armenian dog will drown if we only
spit on him,” a message of support for the Azeri in Nagorno-Karabakh
by the ultra-nationalist Ulku Ocaklari association!

Koptas’s third story concerned the surname law in the early years
of the republic. He recounted how, in 1934, his grandfather failed
to officially register his family name — Sirvanyan — because of a
provision that banned “names of foreign races and nations.” The clerk
decided that “Koptas” was the appropriate surname for the family.

“Violence is at the core of all three stories. I guess the republic,
to which I belong as a citizen, means, primarily, violence to me. … I
do not celebrate Oct. 29 because I have seen that violence. … I dream
of a free, democratic and violence-free republic that ostracizes none
of us,” Koptas concluded.

Many things have changed over the years, but unfortunately, that
bloodthirsty poster remains pasted in many minds.

“We have remained only a handful of people in Istanbul, but we are
still living with the uneasiness of a pigeon,” a Syriac businessman
told me privately. The climate that would eradicate his fears remains
a remote prospect.

In another article for Radikal, ethnic Greek scholar Nikolaos Stelya
recounted the grim years after the Turkish-Greek population exchange
under the Lausanne Treaty, which saw the remaining Greeks dispossessed
and forced to emigrate. Stelya wrote, “Before we speak of re-opening
the Greek Orthodox seminary, the return of community properties and
a state apology, there is one reality we have to focus on: All colors
of this country must lead an equal and free life.”

Inadequate reforms

Kurdish writer Fehim Isik, for his part, underscored how the policies
aimed at building a Turkish identity crushed the Kurds and summed
up the outcome of the Kurdish resistance. Isik wrote, “At the 90th
anniversary of the republic today, the Kurdish struggle has torn down
the policy of rejection and denial. Yet many demands pertaining to
equal citizenship rights — from education in the mother tongue to
self-administration — are yet to be obtained.”

And what does the republic mean for Alevis? Here is an answer,
penned by Ali Kenanoglu, chairman of the Hubyar Sultan Alevi
Culture Association: “In Ottoman times, the Alevis existed as a
community and were mostly seen as people of ‘perverted’ beliefs,
which kept them under persecution. With the republic, the Alevis
became citizens and acquired a certain sense of security. But soon
the republic began to reveal its true face and banned the dervish
convents. … The system, on one hand, banned Alevism and subjected
Alevis to occasional massacres, but, on the other hand, it appointed
the same cornered Alevis as the republic’s guardians, out of fear of
Shariah. … Today, in 2013, the Alevis are realizing that neither
secularism nor a non-democratic, oppressive republic holds salvation
for them. … Without democracy, the republic means nothing.”

The republic’s traits are unsatisfactory, but, as Zaman columnist
Ahmet Turan Alkan notes, no one is longing for the sultanate.

New republic needed

A number of steps have been taken forward recently: Ethnic identities
have been recognized, though the demand for education in their mother
tongues remains unmet; the racist “oath” recited by schoolchildren
— starting with the line, “I’m Turkish, I’m honest,” and ending
with “How happy is the one who says ‘I’m Turkish'” — has been
abolished and public servants have been granted partial freedom to
wear the headscarf. Such steps would have been expected to help
ease the tensions. Yet, they have not only failed to be a remedy
but are threatening to create fresh trouble due to the government’s
confrontational policies and disregard for social consensus and the
resistance of secularist, nationalist and neo-nationalist quarters.

The frustration of prominent scholar Mehmet Altan sums up the
stalemate of both the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP)
and the main opposition. Altan, who advocates a “second republic”
as a solution to the problems and who had initially backed the AKP’s
reformist agenda, wrote the following in his piece for Radikal: “If
you only take a look at the first 28 pages of the AKP’s 2011 election
declaration, you will see how the party has become an admirer and a
hostage of Kemalism in just two years. Trying to get results while
linking the solution of problems to the emotional fluctuations of
‘the one and only’ is stoking the emotional fluctuations of society
itself, resulting in a collective ‘neurotic’ crisis. … After the
‘secularist’ version of Kemalism, we have now tried its ‘religionist’
form, only to find that it, too, has led us into a dead end.”

The articles of Armenian, Greek, Kurdish, Alevi, rightist and leftist
writers all lead to one conclusion: An all-encompassing republic is
a must. There is progress in this direction, but it is not enough.

EU, Armenia To Continue Cooperation On New Platforms

EU, ARMENIA TO CONTINUE COOPERATION ON NEW PLATFORMS

CRI, China
Oct 31 2013

2013-10-31 23:54:26 Xinhua Web Editor: Liu Yuanhui The European Union
(EU) and Armenia would continue their close cooperation in different
ways, EU-Armenia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee Co-Chair Milan
Cabrnoch said here Thursday.

The two sides had to find new ways to cooperate, as the Russian-led
Customs Union, which Armenia has agreed to join, was incompatible
with the EU’s Association Agreement, Cabrnoch said.

He said the EU would continue supporting Armenia for the development
of democracy, human rights, media freedom and rule of law.

Armenia was scheduled to seal an Association Agreement and a Deep
and Comprehensive Free Trade Area with the EU at a November summit
in Lithuania’s Vilnius.

However, the bloc pulled out after Armenian President Serzh Sargsian
announced the country would join the Customs Union in September.

U.S. EMBASSY AND TUMO CENTER PRESENT AMERICAN FILM SHOWCASE 2013

American Film Showcase 2013 “Youth Empowerment”

YEREVAN-From October 28 to November 15, the U.S. Embassy is partnering
with the Tumo Center for Creative Technologies to launch a “Youth
Empowerment” project, which includes an American Documentary Film
Showcase, an essay contest, chess with Armenian grand masters, and
master film classes for young people. The project was introduced at
Tumo during a press conference on October 28, which included the U.S.

Ambassador to Armenia John A. Heffern, Tumo Director Marie Lou
Papazian, producer/editor Nelson Dellamaggiore, director/producer
Katie Dellamaggiore, and independent filmmaker Jay Rosenblatt.

The showcase’s opening film, Brooklyn Castle, is the remarkable
and improbable true story of Intermediate School 318 in Brooklyn,
New York; defying stereotypes, it has the highest ranked junior high
chess team in the nation. It tells the stories of five members of
the chess team at a below-the-poverty-line inner city junior high
school that has won more national championships than any other in
the United States. The film follows the challenges these kids face
in their personal lives as well as on the chessboard, and is as much
about the pain of their losses as it is about the anticipation of
their victories. Ironically, the biggest obstacle thrust upon them
arises not from other competitors but from recessionary budget cuts to
all the extracurricular activities at their school. Brooklyn Castle
shows how these kids’ dedication to chess magnifies their belief in
what is possible for their lives. After all, if they can master the
world’s most difficult game, what can’t they do?

The film will be shown in Armenia’s three main cities: Yerevan ,
Gyumri and Vanadzor. The next 23 films will be screened at Tumo,
and they all follow the theme of the showcase, “Youth Empowerment.”

In addition to the films, the “Youth Empowerment” project sponsored an
essay contest for young Armenians to describe an inspiring teacher
in their lives. The contest received over 3200 entries, and was
co-sponsored by Dasaran.am. Winners will be announced at the opening
film reception by U.S. Ambassador to Armenia John A. Heffern.

Internationally recognized filmmaker Jay Rosenblatt, director/producer
Katie Dellamaggiore and three-time Emmy award nominated director Nelson
Dellamaggiore will run a series of master classes for a group of young
people at Tumo. The filmmakers will work with groups of Tumo students
who have been studying scriptwriting, cinematography and editing over
the course of the past year at Tumo, in order to produce short films
on topics of concern to them.

Armenian grand masters Levon Aroyan and Gabriel Sargsyan will play
chess with a select group of boys and girls prior to the premiere.

Other VIPs will also be present.

Milan Cabrnoch: European Parliament’s Resolution Has Nothing To Do W

MILAN CABRNOCH: EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT’S RESOLUTION HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ARMENIA’S DECISION TO JOIN CUSTOMS UNION

by Tatevik Shahunyan

ARMINFO
Thursday, October 31, 17:25

The European Parliament’s resolution on the European Neighborhood
Policy has nothing to do with Armenia’s decision to join the Customs
Union. Nor does it imply any change in the European Parliament’s
attitude towards the country, Co-Chairman of the Armenia-EU
Parliamentary Cooperation Commission Milan Cabrnoch said in an
interview with ArmInfo.

When asked about his personal attitude towards the provision concerning
Nagorno-Karabakh, Cabrnoch said that the resolution was adopted by a
majority of the European parliamentarians and was an official document
of the European Union.

In an earlier interview with ArmInfo, the Armenian Co-Chair of the
Armenia-EU Parliamentary Cooperation Commission Samvel Farmanyan said
that the provisions of the resolution ran counter to the European
Union’s official stance on the Karabakh conflict, as well as to
the whole logic of the Karabakh peace process in the OSCE Minsk
Group format. “I remember no other resolution to contain so rough
and unilateral assessments divorced from the reality. Certainly,
here we cannot neglect the circumstance that the adoption of this
resolution reflects the situational approach in relation to the
latest developments (Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union –
editor’s note). I think our partners in the European Parliament are
guided by wrong considerations”, he said.

At the plenary session of the European Parliament on 23 October,
a draft resolution on the European Neighborhood was adopted.

Azerbaijani media outlets report that in the paragraph #16, the
resolution “denounces the occupation by one country of the Eastern
Partnership of the territory of another and states that the settlement
of Armenian Azerbaijan Nagorno Karabakh Conflict should comply with
UN Security Council Resolutions.” The document “recalls its position
that the occupation by one country of the Eastern Partnership of
the territory of another violates the fundamental principles and
objectives of the Eastern Partnership and that the resolution of
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict should comply with UN Security Council
resolutions 822, 853, 874 and 884 of 1993 and the Organization for
Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group Basic Principles,
enshrined in the L’Aquila joint statement of 10 July 2009”.

RUSSIA’S AUTHORITIES DO NOT SHARE VIEW OF RUSSIAN FIRST CHANNEL BROADCAST: SHAVARSH KOCHARYAN

18:29, 31 October, 2013

YEREVAN,OCTOBER 31,ARMENPRESS. The answer of the various opinions
about the membership of the Republic of Armenia with the Customs Union
was given in the session of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council
which was held in Minsk on October 24. Deputy Minister of Foreign
Affairs of the Republic of Armenia Shavarsh Kocharyan expressed such
a viewpoint at the course of the discussion held in the National
Assembly. “A corresponding document was signed at the summit which
all the leaders of member countries of the Customs Union signed, by
the way, one document was not signed, ” Shavarsh Kocharyan pointed
out adding that there was also a political statement.

According to him, by the signed documents the sides approved the wish
of the Republic of Armenia to join the Customs Union. “The membership
of Armenia with the Customs Union is a serious and difficult process
that we must carry out it,” Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of
the Republic of Armenia Shavarsh Kocharyan highlighted it.

Touching upon the report of the Russian first TV channel, where
a viewpoint was expressed that the Republic of Armenia will not
join the Customs Union because of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
settlement, Shavarsh Kocharyan stated that this view is anacceptable
for the Russian authorities.”Moreover, I can say, that it was the
expression of the wish of the third side, which became impossible
as the corresponding documents were signed on October 24,” Shavarsh
Kocharyan underscored

Nagorno -Karabakh’s Ties With Russia Should Be As Strong As With Arm

NAGORNO -KARABAKH’S TIES WITH RUSSIA SHOULD BE AS STRONG AS WITH ARMENIA -RUSSIAN EXPERT SAYS

YEREVAN, October 31. / ARKA /. Nagorno-Karabakh’s ties with Russia
should be as strong as with Armenia, Mikhail Alexandrov, head of the
Caucasus Department of the CIS Institute in Moscow, told ARKA.

Alexandrov is one of many historians, researchers and political
analysts from Russia and the Caucasus taking part in an international
conference in Moscow dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Gulistan
Treaty The Gulistan Treaty concluded between imperial Russia and
Persia in 1813 as a result of the first Russia-Persian confirmed
inclusion of modern day Azerbaijan, Dagestan and Eastern Georgia into
the Russian Empire.

“Nagorno-Karabakh was the first Armenian state to have joined Russia.

This is recorded in the Gulistan Treaty, and to some extent Russia is
more responsible for Nagorno-Karabakh than the modern-day Armenia,”
Alexandrov said.

According to him, this aspect of the Gulistan Treaty was voiced at
the conference, but in modern politics it is not present.

“This is a very important aspect. The treaty defined the role of
Russia as the main foreign power in the region. This is prescribed
by the treaty. This should now be realized by all,” he said.

He added that the treaty laid the basic parameters for the existence
of the Caucasus in the last 200 years, and not only of the Caucasus,
but also parts of Russia’s North Caucasus. He said this is why this
treaty is of fundamental importance for the situation that now exists
in the Caucasus and the Caspian region.

He said according to some reports at the conference, the status of
the Caspian Sea is also largely determined by the parameters that
were laid in the Gulistan Treaty. “So, it is quite right to mark the
200th anniversary of this important event,” he said.

The purpose of the conference, he said, is to emphasize the historical
significance of the Gulistan Treaty, and also to consider its relevance
to the current situation in the Caucasus.

He said the historians and researchers are from Russia, Armenia and
Russia’s republic of Dagestan. A representative of the Talysh people
is expected to also make a report.

‘Unfortunately, we do not have scientists from Azerbaijan, but
Azerbaijani reporter has arrived in Moscow to cover this event. In
my opinion, they are even more than Armenian reporters,’ he said.

A debate today at the conference was to discuss the impact of the
Gulistan Treaty on the political development of the Caucasus, including
the Caspian problems, inter-ethnic relations, and the relationship
of the Caucasian states and the influence of the great powers.

The results of the discussions will be summarized in a newsletter
that will be posted at .-0-
