ATP Expands Presence on West Coast with the Addition of Maral Habeshian to
Development Team

GLENDALE, CA–Armenia Tree Project (ATP) is pleased to announce the addition
of Maral Habeshian to the organization’s US staff as Western Region
Development Director.

“The growth and influence of the Armenian-American community on the West
Coast is a force to be reckoned with. We quickly understood that with the
third largest concentration of Armenians in the world outside of Armenia and
Russia, California needed a strong ATP presence,” said Managing Director Tom
Garabedian. “We’re proud to have Maral on our team to continue the work done
by Hermine Mahmouzian and to work in collaboration with Anahit Gharibyan.”

Maral’s experience in working with development projects includes working
with the World Bank and IMF missions to Armenia, and the Armenian Relief
Society’s earthquake relief initiatives in the aftermath of the December
1988 Spitak earthquake.

More recently, Maral worked with Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul
Krekorian and headed marketing and development for the joint USC-Children’s
Hospital Los Angeles fetal therapy program, as well as development
initiatives and community outreach at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center.
She was also the English section editor of Asbarez Armenian Newspaper and
the project director of the inaugural ANCA National Telethon.

“It’s a privilege to work for an organization that is improving Armenia’s
environment with its planting and reforestation efforts and long-term
socioeconomic development of villages. ATP is heightening environmental
awareness throughout Armenia, and most important, by teaching respect for
the environment both in Armenia and in the Diaspora, it is nurturing a new
generation,” noted Ms. Habeshian. “I am excited to help raise awareness of
these amazing programs and develop broad support in California and beyond.”

ATP’s mission is to develop Armenia through community-based tree planting
and environmental education. ATP seeks to reverse the loss of Armenia’s
forest cover and to advocate for the sustainable use of our natural
resources. ATP’s three major programs are tree planting, environmental
education, and sustainable development initiatives. For more information,

Law Of Copyright Violations To Enter Into Force On November 10

LAW OF COPYRIGHT VIOLATIONS TO ENTER INTO FORCE ON NOVEMBER 10

19:13, 8 November, 2013

YEREVAN, NOVEMBER 8, ARMENPRESS. The draft of the law about making
additions and changes in the law of the Republic of Armenia “About
copyright and related laws”, is to fight against the copyrights
infringement cases, will enter into force since November 10. The
member of the Republican Party of Armenia Faction, co-author of the
law Arpine Hovhannisyan told it in a conversation with Armenpress.

“The draft of the law was published on October 30, in 10 days, it
will enter into force,” Arpine Hovhannisyan underscored. According
to the co-author of the law Arpine Hovhannisyan the law will serve
the goal only if the Mass Media keep the journalistic ethic rules.

“Keeping journalistic ethic rules plays a significant role in this
case, otherwise, the law will lose its meaning,” Arpine Hovhannisyan
noted. The law is not designed for adding forensic claims against Mass
Media; its goal is the settlement of the current problems. Arpine
Hovhannisyan assures that the Mass Media should understand that it
is not appropriate to throw the journalist’s work into the water
in a moment by taking it and putting it in another website without
proper reference. She expressed a hope that this problem will get its
solution after the law enters into force, and the journalists will
keep the journalistic ethic rules at the course of their work activity.

A talk on the Plight of Syrian Refugees

Activist Nun to Discuss Plight of Syrian Refugees

Mother Agnes Mariam of the Cross

LOS ANGELES-The Armenian community of Southern California is inviting the
Los Angeles community to two days of speeches by Syria’s Mother Agnes Mariam
of the Cross, Mother Superior at the Monastery and Convent of St. James the
Mutilated in Qara, Syria.

Mother Agnes will speak about the current crisis in Syria, giving accounts
of the war that are very different from those reported by the media.

The towns and villages around Mother Agnes’ monastery have been largely
abandoned as people have fled and been made refugees. In May of 2013, Mother
Agnes herself was assailed by gunmen. That spring, she organized an
international delegation led by Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire, which
visited Lebanon and Syria. The delegation observed conditions and talked
with refugees and opposition and government representatives. Mother Agnes is
one of the main organizers of Mussalaha (Reconciliation), a popular movement
in Syria that mediates disputes and organizes ceasefires between opposing
forces.

Mother Agnes will be touring the U.S. and Canada under the auspices of the
Syrian Solidarity Movement, a U.S. tax-exempt nonprofit project. Armenian
communities in Southern California will be hosting Mother Agnes to speak on
Saturday Nov. 9, 2013, at Jesus Sacred Heart Church in North Hollywood at 7
p.m.; and on Sunday Nov. 10, 2013, at Saint Gregory Armenian Church in
Glendale, Calif. at 2 p.m.

Mother Agnes will be speaking about the conditions of all people and faiths
and will provide her insights and observations on “What is Really Happening
in Syria Today,” as her speech is titled.

Veteran’s Day

** Veterans Day
————————————————————

Veterans Day first began as a commemoration of the end of World War I
in 1918. `The Great War’ came to a close on the eleventh hour of the
eleventh day of the eleventh month, when an armistice went into effect
between the Allied nations and Germany.

In the ensuing decades, as American soldiers continued to be deployed
overseas, November 11 became a day to pay tribute to American veterans
of all wars for their patriotism, courage, and sacrifice.

This Veterans Day, we offer a prayer known for centuries to those who
have ever found themselves in harm’s way. Click here

FAR

** FAR Board of Directors Meet
————————————————————

On Tuesday, October 29, the Fund for Armenian Relief Board of
Directors met at the Diocesan Center in New York to discuss new
projects and to review existing FAR programs in Armenia.

Among FAR’s latest initiatives is the September opening of the newly
built Octet Music School in Gyumri. Thanks to the support of the
Mardigian Family Foundation, young musicians now have a
state-of-the-art facility for study and performances.

Another project is the recent visit to Armenia made by a group of US
doctors, headed by Dr. Ed Seferian of Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los
Angeles, to conduct a major training program in Pediatric Intensive
Care for medical professionals in Armenia. The project was funded by
the Sapah-Gulian Foundation.

Board members received a report and approved the progress made in the
implementation of the Child Malnutrition program, initiated in 2013
and funded by the Ajemian Foundation. They also began work on
redefining the strategy for FAR’s GTech program. Turning to
scholarship programs, board members expressed their appreciation to
the Gulamerian Foundation, which sponsors vocational training for
orphans in Armenia.

The highlight of the meeting was the evaluation of the progress made
in FAR’s newest program, Breaking the Cycle of Poverty. The program
was launched in Armenia’s Tavush region in 2013 with funding from the
Mardigian Family Foundation. Board members established an oversight
committee to closely monitor Breaking the Cycle of Poverty and to
provide assistance to management staff.

SIS Brings Charges Against Argishti Kivirian

SIS BRINGS CHARGES AGAINST ARGISHTI KIVIRIAN

The Special Investigation Service (SIS) of Armenia charged activist,
Armenia Today website’s coordinator Argishti Kivirian with violence
against a representative of the authorities and false denunciation,
the press service of SIS reported.

According to the source, Kivirian was charged under the Criminal Code’s
Article 316 part 1 (violence against a representative of authorities)
and Article 333 part 2 point 1 (false denunciation, accompanied by
accusations of a grave or particularly grave crime).

On August 24, 2013, Kivirian used non-health-threatening violence
against a policeman when he was detained after refusing to obey a
lawful order of the policeman who maintained public order in the area
near a newly-built building at 5 Komitas Street in Yerevan.

The statement says that while being taken to the Arabkir police
station, Argishti Kivirian hit his head against a door of the police
car, suffering self-inflicted injuries to the forehead, the nose and
the eyelid. He also threatened the policeman to accuse him of the
injuries he received.

Kivirian carried out his threats. Realizing that his report was a
false one, Kivirian submitted a report to the appropriate bodies
authorized to open criminal cases, informing them that policemen had
inflicted injuries on him. Recognizance not leave Yerevan was chosen
as a measure of restraint against Kivirian.

A New Playwright In Town: Taleen Babayan Dazzles

A NEW PLAYWRIGHT IN TOWN: TALEEN BABAYAN DAZZLES

ARTS | NOVEMBER 7, 2013 2:07 PM

By Hagop Vartivarian

NEW YORK – The cultural life of the Greater New York Armenian
community was further enriched with the theatrical endeavor of
Taleen Babayan. Already a recognized name to the readership of the
Armenian-Mirror Spectator for the last decade with her frequent
articles and reporting, we are doubly pleased to see a young talent
interested in writing plays, possibly the most difficult genre of
literature.

Babayan possesses a deep knowledge of what defines an Armenian-American
family: the traditional family clinging firmly to ethnic customs,
juxtaposed with the current generation striving to adapt and adjust to
a new environment. Whereas during the last century renowned literary
figures such as Peniamin Nourigian, Aram Haigaz, Vahe Hayg, Souren
Manuelian, and Hagop Asadourian lamented the pain of immigrants
arriving from historic Armenia, today Babayan laments the pain of
young Armenian-Americans, whose families arrived from Beirut, Aleppo,
Istanbul, and Tehran, and who strive to speak and live the Armenian
spirit outside of their homeland. We only hope that her endeavor
becomes an inspiration to her generation.

She was indeed raised in a traditional Armenian family. Her
grandfather, Yervant Babayan, is a prominent educator and prolific
writer, and her father, Nerses, was engaged in journalism for many
years and associated with the Armenian Mirror-Spectator. Furthermore,
she continues to receive the attention and care of her loving mother,
Hermine.

Like many others of her generation, Babayan spent her college years
away from home in a non-Armenian environment, but maintained the
ties to her Armenian culture during that time. She has acquired her
knowledge of the Armenian language at home and from Saturday Armenian
School. She is worthy of much praise.

Back to the play. “Where Is Your Groom?” is 80-percent English and
20-percent Armenian and they complement each other in perfect harmony.

All the young actors at the performance on Saturday, October 26,
at The Players Theatre, were essentially the product of the Middle
East and close to 250 attendees watched their acting and accurate
Armenian pronunciation with pure pleasure.

The play takes place at the home of Koko (Aris Hamparsoumian) and
Siroun (Katherine Sabbagh). The couple’s two children, Lara (Zarig
Baghdadlian) and Saro [Haig Minassian], wish to marry non-Armenians,
after having bad experiences dating in their own community. Lara
introduces her parents to an ignorant American young man, who has
not even heard of Armenia. Meanwhile, Lara’s parents introduce her to
young men of Armenian families. Finally, she meets the right Armenian
and the engagement (khosgab) takes place as well-known singer Robert
Chilingirian enters the stage singing a wedding song.

Some on the stage had acting experience and others none, yet all
performed very well. The set, featuring an Armenian living room,
was beautifully furnished. Other participants included Lori Cinar,
Joe Hovsepian, Tanya Bas, Taniel Ohanian, Raffi Gulbenk, Sarkis
Yenikomshuyan, Sedrak Yenikomshuyan, Daniella Baydar, Taniel Ekshian,
Andrew Saganda and Edwin Baghdasarian. Backstage volunteers were
Taleen Baghdadlian, Anoush Gulian and Anahid Kaprielian. Harout
Chatmajian, one of the directors of the Tekeyan Cultural Association’s
Mher Megerdchian Theatrical Group, contributed greatly to the acting
aspect of the play.

The play teems with the painful phenomenon of Armenian-American
contemporary life. For example, the family priest (played by Taniel
Ohanian) introduces Paul (played by Andrew Saganda), a seminarian who
aspires to become a priest yet who doesn’t know one word of Armenian.

He will serve in the Armenian Church and if left to such priests, our
sacred Badarak will be performed in English one day. Babayan highlights
this and many other painful occurrences within our community life in
her play.

We congratulate her and the team of young cast and crew and who
continue to keep our theatrical heritage alive.
