UKRAINE INTERESTED IN MAINTAINING TIES WITH CIS: REPORTS

MOSCOW, October 10 (RIA Novosti) – Ukraine has taken “no real steps”
to sever its ties with the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS),
despite “loud rhetoric” coming from Ukrainian authorities, Kommersant
newspaper reported Friday, citing a source close to the CIS Executive
Committee.

“Membership in the CIS gives Ukraine a large number of benefits –
from visa-free movement of its citizens in the countries of the
Commonwealth to its participation in the free trade zone.

Unsurprisingly, despite the loud rhetoric, Ukrainian authorities are,
in fact, in no rush to change their status in the CIS,” the source
was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

According to the source, Ukraine has been participating “very actively”
in the redistribution of quotas for positions within the organization
for the coming years.

The Commonwealth of Independent States currently unites nine
full members, which are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan,
Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, and two
participating states -Turkmenistan and Ukraine.

Despite the fact that Ukraine was one of three founding states that
ratified the agreement to create the CIS in 1991, it did not ratify
the CIS Charter, becoming an associate member of the alliance in 1993.

Speculations about Ukraine’s withdrawal from the CIS came when Crimea
signed a reunification treaty with Russia on March 18. Belarus took
over the CIS presidency after Kiev announced that it would abandon its
post as this year’s rotating head of the CIS, adding it may reconsider
its membership in the organization.

RIA Novosti was previously informed by sources in the CIS Executive
Committee that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko would skip the
organization’s next summit, which is set to take place on Friday
in Minsk.

On Thursday, Ukrainian Foreign Affairs Ministry representative Yevhen
Perebiynis stated that Ukraine’s unwillingness to participate in the
summit at the presidential level was a “signal to the organization
about where it has behaved incorrectly.”

Fresno – On Sunday, November 2, the Armenian Community of the San
Joaquin Valley will break ground on a monument dedicated to the 100th
Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. The event will begin at 2:30
p.m. and take place at the Fresno State Maple Mall, located south of
the Satellite Student Union. Free parking will be available in Lots
P15, P16 and Lots P5, P6. The groundbreaking ceremony is open to the
public and all are welcome.

Built from béton brut (architectural concrete) and tufa stones, the
monument will embody symbols of cultural meaning to the Armenian
people. Its principal components will be arranged in a circular
pattern and angled inwards, reminiscent of the Tzitzernagapert
Armenian Martyrs Monument in Armenia. The nine pillars that will
comprise the body of the structure represent the six provinces of
historic Armenia, Cilicia, the Diaspora, and the Republic of
Armenia. An incomplete halo will be set above the columns, signifying
both the fracture left by the Genocide and the unity of the Armenian
people.

Sunday’s ceremony will mark construction of the memorial, which will
be christened on April 24th, 2015.

As many as 1.5 million Armenians lost their lives in the period
1915’1923 at the hands of the Ottoman Turkish government. On April
24th 1915, the Young Turk regime arrested and eventually executed
hundreds of Armenian religious, academic, and political leaders’it was
the first step in its intent to exterminate an entire people. Many
succumbed to starvation and exhaustion during state-mandated
deportations or `death marches’ that left Western Armenia devoid of
its native inhabitants even to this day. Others were murdered
outright, often in ways that defy all sense of humanity. According to
historians, legal experts, and more than 20 nations throughout the
world, the planned and systematic nature of these atrocities clearly
constitute a genocide as defined by the United Nations’ Convention on
the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide.

The Armenian Genocide Centennial Committee’Fresno is an organization
made-up of representatives from religious, educational, social, and
political organizations of the Central Valley. The group’s goals are
to commemorate the 1.5 million martyrs who perished at the hands of
the Ottoman Turkish Government; to educate others about the Armenian
Genocide and historical injustice; and to inspire people to overcome
adversity through the story of the survivors’ of the Armenian
Genocide. In addition to the monument, the AGCC’Fresno is organizing
and promoting numerous events in the coming year. For more

Holy Translators
Celebrate the power of the Armenian identity this weekend.

** Translators Assemble!
————————————————————
The Invincible Philosopher. The Master of Mystic Poetry. The Wartime
Chronicler. The Grace-Filled Patriarch. The Man of a Dozen Tongues.

It could be the line-up of characters for a new super-hero flick. But
in fact, each is a saint of the Armenian Church-David, Narek,
Yeghishe, Nersess, Masdots-remembered together (along with others) as
a distinctive `team’ known as the Holy Translators. This Saturday,
October 11, is their annual feast day.

Whether super or not, the Holy Translators were genuine heroes-and
powerful ones, at that. Endowed with rare qualities of imagination and
vision, they helped to forge a national identity for the Armenian
people-using simple words and humble faith as their primary tools.

It’s an identity that has outlasted empires, overcome persecution, and
reached the heights of civilization. Most remarkable of all, it has
endured to the present day-and is ready to be embraced by all of
us. This Saturday, try to reflect on the great power we’ve
inherited-and the great responsibility that goes with it.

With your peace, Christ our savior, which surpasses all understanding
and speech, defend us and keep us fearless of all evil. Make us equal
to your true worshipers, who worship you in spirit and in truth; for
to the most-holy Trinity is befitting glory, dominion, and honor, now
and always. Amen.

** A New Church in Armenia’s Gegharkunik Region
————————————————————
On Saturday, October 4, a newly built church was consecrated in
Armenia’s eastern Gegharkunik region by Bishop Markos Hovhannisyan,
Primate of the Gegharkunik Diocese.

Residents of the village of Vaghashen poured into St. Gregory of Narek
Church for the consecration service. Many said they hoped the church
would be a focal point for religious and cultural activity in
Vaghashen, which has been without a house of worship for years. The
only other church in the village, a 19th-century chapel located near
the local cemetery, has been in ruins since the Soviet period.

Construction costs for St. Gregory of Narek Church were underwritten
by Vaghashen native Henri Melkhonyan, and the building was designed by
architect Hrachya Gasparyan. Young people donning traditional Armenian
costumes performed folk songs following Saturday’s consecration
service.

** In Memoriam: Fr. Benedict Groeschel
————————————————————
The Eastern Diocese mourns the passing of Fr. Benedict Groeschel: a
Roman Catholic priest and Franciscan friar, well known to the public
as host of a talk show on the Eternal Word Television Network, who
passed way on October 3, 2014.

To Armenian clergy in the Eastern Diocese, he was a beloved friend and
guide: faith-filled, humble, learned, and a true disciple of Jesus
Christ. Fr. Benedict was equally a great supporter of the Armenian
people, who preached the need for the Armenian martyrs to be
sanctified, as a way to bring healing and life to our church. Numerous
Armenian clergymen, deacons, and laypeople felt fortunate to have been
blessed by his presence and spiritual support.

Fr. Benedict taught, inspired, and witnessed at the Trinity Retreat
House, nestled next to Long Island Sound, the site of many Diocesan
clergy gatherings. His compassionate spirit will always reside there,
beckoning guests to “Come, have a glass of wine, and take a retreat.”
His soul will surely rejoice when our church sanctifies the Armenian
Genocide martyrs in 2015.
