Defense Minister Warns Of Full Retaliation Over Karabakh

DEFENSE MINISTER WARNS OF FULL RETALIATION OVER KARABAKH

Tert.am
19.05.11

The resumption of military actions against the Republic of Nagorno
Karabakh will prompt Armenia to fully commit itself to making
Azerbaijan quit the idea, Armenia’s defense minister has said.

Speaking at a conference dedicated to the role of the Collective
Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in the South Caucasus, Seyran
Ohanyan said that Armenia will have to resort to military actions
in such scenario as it is the “safeguard of the physical security of
Karabakh’s population”.

Further, he said that given Armenia’s membership to the CSTO, it
can expect an adequate assistance and response by its CSTO allies if
there is such a need.

“First of all, allies have some liabilities towards each other.

Secondly, they have opportunities to adequately respond to a possible
aggression,” said Ohanyan.

Further, Ohanyan urged on the CSTO members to spare no efforts to
avoid a situation when the behavior of a member state will harm the
interests of the other.

He also said that Armenia is inclined to a peaceful settlement of the
Karabakh conflict and hopes the CSTO allies will admit and comprehend
Armenia’s position over the issue.

“Today the situation in the South Caucasus is instable, explosive,
conceivable of destabilization,” said Ohanyan.

“Armenia – taking into account its exclusive geographic position
and having no immediate borders with any of the CSTO allies – is
especially interested in the quickest settlement of the situation
and in strengthening the stability of its borders.”

Armenian Culture Shines During the ARS 10th Festival

In its 10th straight year, the ARS Annual Armenian Cultural & Food Festival
brought together crowds from near and far to the Glendale Civic Auditorium
on April 30 and May 1, 2011.

From the moment doors opened to the public until the festival’s closing,
attractions for people of all ages to enjoy entertained guests, occupying
both levels of the venue. The lower level offered an intriguing line-up of
cultural exhibits, which took onlookers back in time and featured old-world
displays of artwork, traditional garb of regions such as Kharpert, Lori,
Drabizon, and more, as well as a “lavash”-making demonstration. Armenian
compatriotic unions, such as the Union of New Julfa, presented traditional
pieces dating back decades. Even meeting the needs of eager, young children,
a section was solely dedicated to children’s games and activities.

The upper level, filled with appetizing aromas, was the scene where
renowned Armenian singers, including Harout Pamboukjian and Gagik Badalyan,
as well as many folk dance groups, took to the stage with back-to-back
performances. A main attraction, the re-creation of a traditional Armenian
wedding, was a hit similar to years past, whereby a group of 30 people
dressed in authentic costumes accompany the bride and groom into the hall
while lively Armenian music plays.

Expert: Russia Prevents Aliyev From Attempting Military Adventure

EXPERT: RUSSIA PREVENTS ALIYEV FROM ATTEMPTING MILITARY ADVENTURE

PanARMENIAN.Net
May 19, 2011 – 15:37 AMT

Karabakh conflict settlement by force is impossible, the chief research
engineer at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations,
Russian Academy of Sciences believes.

In a conversation with a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter, Victor Sheynis
reminded about the sad results military adventures led to, citing
Georgia’s aggression against Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

At the same time, the expert specifically noted Russia’s support for
Karabakh. “The settlement of Karabakh conflict requires intensive
efforts, with Russia’s support acting as a restrictive factor to
Azerbaijan. Were it not for this support, Aliyev would have attempted
a military adventure long ago,” Sheynis stressed.

Visit Of The President Of The European Parliament To Armenia Summed

VISIT OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT TO ARMENIA SUMMED UP WITH THE JOINT PRESS CONFERENCE WITH RA NA SPEAKER

18.05.2011

On May 18 in the National Assembly the joint press conference of RA NA
Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan and the President of the European Parliament
(EP) Jerzy Buzek was held.

Welcoming the guest Hovik Abrahamyan underlined that during the last
one year the EU-Armenia cooperation was activated, numerous mutual
visits of high-ranking officials took place and expressed conviction
that such visits, and in particular, the visit of the President of
the European Parliament would promote the development and deepening
of relations between two parliaments. “In Armenia’s foreign policy
the activation and development of cooperation with EU is a prior
direction. We cooperate in different formats,” RA NA Speaker said.

Thanking for invitation and reception Jerzy Buzek noticed that
Armenia and the EU citizens were in their common house, which was
Europe. He noted that Armenia was a decisive, important neighbour for
EU, especially in the South Caucasus region. “We create partnership
with each other due to Armenia being open. I know that Armenia is
making progress through reforms. That is the choice of Armenia, RA
President, RA Parliament, RA Government, Armenian people in what road
the country goes on. But I think if we want welfare for our citizens,
the best way is the democracy, human rights and market economy,” the
President of the European Parliament noted. The latter underlined
that he was pleased with the cooperation that existed between the
parliaments of Armenia and EU. Armenia and the European Union cooperate
in many directions. The guest highlighted the stability of Armenia’s
position and activity. “We cooperate, we are open before each other,
the Speaker of the Armenian parliament and me,” Jerzy Busek said.

RA NA Speaker and the President of the European Parliament answered
the journalists’ questions.

In response to the question on the NK problem settlement, Mr Buzek
noted that though they didn’t recognize Nagorno Karabakh as a unit,
but it did not mean that we might forget the people’s basic needs,
people should communicate, travel, but there would not be wars,
this is the EU policy. According to the President of the European
Parliament, if we want to find comprehensive solution in future, we
should prepare the communities for that, the Nagorno Karabakh, too. To
Mr Buzek’s conviction, we should move through the peace process.

Responding the journalist’s question on March 1 events, the EP
President noted that he had discussed this issue with RA President
and RA NA Speaker, and the two very important persons ensured him
that an examination was underway, and every effort was taken to solve
the problem.

In response to the journalist’s question on the availability of
“political prisoners” in Armenia, RA NA Speaker was the first to
answer. He stressed that he didn’t agree with the journalist’s
idea that there were “political prisoners” in Armenia. Regarding
the Parliament Speaker’s letter addressed to RA President on Sasun
Mikaelyan’s release, Hovik Abrahamyan noted that it had been the
proposal of his coalition colleagues, RPA, PAP and Country of Law
factions. “I have sent the letter to RA President, we have talked,
and the President has said that the issue is under observation, and
I hope (this is my personal opinion) that in future that issue will
be positively solved,” the NA Speaker noted.

To the conviction of the President of the European Parliament,
recently several persons’ release was a promising decision.

EXCHANGE OF CULTURES IS A SACRED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PEOPLES — AL-MULAIFI

Education 5/19/2011 1:18:00 PM

Minister of Education and Higher Education Minister Ahmed Al-Mulaifi
KUWAIT, May 19 (KUNA) — Minister of Education and Higher Education
Minister Ahmed Al-Mulaifi said on Thursday that education is the
best message that could be sent by mankind to the world, through the
exchange of cultures, which is the most sacred relationship between
the peoples.

Al-Mulaifi made the statement to the press last night after patronizing
the “Golden Jubilee – 50 years” celebration of the establishment of
the Armenian school in Kuwait, held in Kuwait University auditorium
with the attendance of former Head of the World Churches Council and
Catholics of the Armenian Orthodox Church of Cilicia in Lebanon Aram
I Kachichian and a number of ambassadors, and Ministry of Education
officials.

He added that the Armenian school represents the country’s interest in
development, and opening the door for private education to participate
in the educational process in the country. He said the ministry did
not spare any effort to support this administration in achieving its
goal of expanding its services.

On the issue of Deputy Premier and Minister of State for Development
Affairs and Minister of State for Housing Affairs, Sheikh Ahmad
Al-Fahad Al-Sabah’s call for investing in private education,
Al-Mulaifi said that supporting education in general is a major
part of the ministry’s work in eliminating all obstacles facing the
private educational sector, which would in return reduce the cost of
private education.

Al-Mulaifi also referred to the large number of students in private
schools, stressing that this fact does not mean that public schools
are repellent, as many generations have graduated from the public
education system and have succeeded greatly in their lives. On the
other hand, Director of Al-Tathamin High school, Mona Al-Qallaf,
said in a speech during the ceremony, “We celebrate this year marking
50 years since the opening one of the most important educational
institutes in the State of Kuwait, which plays an important role in
education and teachers, under the strong belief that they play a role
in the county’s development.” Al-Qallaf said, “The Armenian people
have great history, as they faced challenges and stood strong in their
beliefs, they built churches where they held their religious rituals,
and maintained the Armenian language, which is an important pillar
of the community’s strength.” Meanwhile, Armenian School Director,
Manuel Manokien said that the Kuwaiti and Armenian people have joint
goals and similar sufferings. Highlighting the coinciding celebrations
of Kuwait marking its 50th anniversary of independence and the Armenian
school marking its 50th anniversary of establishment. He also praised
the warm hospitality of the Kuwaiti people, also remembering the
generosity of Sheikh Jaber Al-Abdullah who presented five thousand
rupees in contributing of establishing the Armenian school building.

He stressed that the aim of the school remains, “preparing a generation
of young men and women whom believe in God and the Armenian homeland
and loyal to the land it lives in, and always looks forward to his/her
native country’s interest.” Chairman of the Board of Trustees of
the Armenian school, Engineer Munir Tarbnian, said that the number
of students in this school is 443 students from kindergarten stages
through high school, adding that the number of the Armenian community
in Kuwait is estimated at about 3500 people.

Meanwhile praising Kuwait’s generous hospitality to many foreigners,
wishing the country and its people additional prosperity and great
wealth.

The Armenian school opened its doors in Kuwait during the era of
Minister of Education, at the time, Sheikh Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah,
at the beginning of the academic year 1960/1961 in a modest building
in Salmiya, under the name of the (Arabic Armenian School), where the
number of students and time does not exceed 90 students from Armenians
and other Arab communities. (end) rkf.na.asa KUNA 191318 May 11NNNN

IRAN TRIES TO CAJOLE BOTH ARMENIA AND AZERBAIJAN, EXPERT SAYS

PanARMENIAN.Net
May 19, 2011 – 13:34 AMT

Following the Iranian Ayatollah’s statement suggesting his country
helped Azerbaijan in Karabakh war years, Iran attempted to cajole
both Armenia and Azerbaijan, while counteracting Turkey, according to
director of the Armenian Center for National and International Studies
(ACNIS).

As Manvel Sargsyan stated at a discussion titled “Karabakh Issue in
Armenia and International Scene: New Situation, Old Approaches”,
the statement by the Iranian Embassy in Armenia, which stressed
Tehran’s respect for the nations’ right for self-determination and
Iran’s protesting the stationing of foreign troops in the region,
proves the above-mentioned fact.

As the expert noted, the statement of Ayatollah was a was a
well-thought move, as a spiritual leader couldn’t have been informed
of military sector-related details. “It’s a political step. Iran
is attempting to hold control of both Armenia and Azerbaijan,”
Sargsyan said.
