225,000 people killed in U.S.-launched wars

225,000 people killed in U.S.-launched wars

July 2, 2011 – 17:58 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – The study published by Brown University this week
focused on the wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and counter-terrorism
campaigns in Pakistan and Yemen, which came in the wake of the 9/11
attacks on the United States.

The authors argued that governments almost always go to war
underestimating the potential duration and costs of a conflict while
overestimating “the political objectives that can be accomplished by
the use of brute force.”

The study said “an extremely conservative estimate” of the casualty
toll was about 225,000 people killed and 365,000 wounded in the wars
so far.

The number of soldiers killed comes to 31,741, including about 6,000
Americans, 1,200 allied troops, 9,900 Iraqis, 8,800 Afghans, 3,500
Pakistanis as well as 2,300 US private security contractors, it said.

The civilian toll was much higher, with an estimated 172,000 dead,
including about 125,000 Iraqis, 35,000 Pakistanis and 12,000 Afghans,
it said.

The study acknowledged that estimating the number of dead was
difficult, particularly the toll for insurgents, putting the number at
between 20,000 to 51,000 insurgents killed.

The report found that 168 reporters and 266 humanitarian workers were
among the dead since the United States launched its “war on terror”
after 9/11.

The wars also have triggered a massive flow of refugees and displaced
persons, with more than 7.8 million displaced, mostly in Iraq and
Afghanistan, it said.

The study estimated the financial cost of the wars at a minimum of
$3.7 trillion and up to $4.4 trillion, which represents about a
quarter of the country’s current debt, accoridng to AFP

Turkish Documentation of the Armenian Genocide on Armenocide

Turkish Documentation of the Armenian Genocide on Armenocide

July 2011, announces the publication on our website of 31
original documents in Turkish related to the 1919-1922 Divan-i Harbi Örbi
trials in Istanbul. These trials were courts martial where ministerial
members of the wartime Ottoman Cabinet, administrators of the Union &
Progress Party (CUP; Young Turks), and other defendants were tried for
crimes concerning what was at the time referred to as tehcir ve taktil, the
deportation and killings of Ottoman Armenian citizens 1915-1917.

The documents have been translated from the Ottoman into modern Turkish and
are compiled and introduced by Taner Akçam, Associate Professor of History
and the Kaloosdian/Mugar Chair in Armenian Genocide Studies at the Center
for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University, USA.

Detailed information on the documents published here, and on all of the 62
trials that took place during the period, can be obtained from the Turkish
and American editions of this book:

Taner Akçam & Vahakn N. Dadrian, “Tehcir ve Taktil”, Divan-i Harb-i Örfî
Zabitlari, Ittihat ve Terakki Yargilanmalari (1919-1922), Istanbul: Bilgi
Ünivesitesi Yayinlari 2008;

Vahakn N. Dadrian & Taner Akçam, Judgment in Istanbul: The Armenian Genocide
Trials, New York: Berghahn Books 2011. The latter publication contains
English translations of key documents.

Last year another new section of Armenocide was launched with 80 Danish
Foreign Ministry documents on the Armenian genocide and related issues, in
the original Danish and in English translation. The documents were compiled,
introduced, and translated by Danish historian Matthias Bjørnlund. These 80
documents have now been translated into German by Michael Willadsen, making
them available to the vast German-speaking population in and outside of
Germany.

As with all documents on Armenocide, the documents in the Turkish and Danish
sections are indexed, annotated, and summarized. They add to the 1350 German
Foreign Ministry documents on the Armenian genocide, the 1909 Adana
massacres (a section that includes British documents), etc., already on the
website. Some 250 of the most important German documents online have at this
point been translated into English, and a section with German documentation
of the fates of individual Armenian deportees during the genocide is in the
making.

Turkey wastes $50m in cancelled missile deal with France

Turkey wastes $50m in cancelled missile deal with France

July 2, 2011 – 11:33 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – A cancelled deal that Turkey had signed for the
purchase of 19,000 short-range missiles from France has caused more
harm to the Turkish economy than was initially thought, a Defense
Ministry official said.

The official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Today’s
Zaman that a $50 million investment, which the Turkish Mechanical and
Chemical Industry Corporation (MKEK) had made to produce missiles as
part of the cancelled deal, was wasted because the facility it
constructed for that purpose has remained idle since the late 1990s.

In 1998 Turkey agreed with France on the purchase of 19,000
short-range missiles for 400 million euros. As part of that deal,
Turkey made a payment of 280 million euros, almost three-quarters of
the total amount, but only received 3,600 missiles. When those
delivered missiles were tested at the Land Forces Command (KKK) in
Ankara, it was discovered that the missiles were defective and could
not hit their targets. Although France was notified of the test
results, operational missile deliveries started to miss deadlines and
Turkey consequently cancelled the deal in 2004. Upon Turkey’s
application, the International Court of Arbitration ruled in favor of
Turkey in 2009, but by that time Turkey had lost a decade trying to
compensate losses rather than strengthening its defense industry.

This recent revelation by the ministry official has added to Turkey’s
woes as it reveals that the country not only lost time but also money
with the $50 million investment following this failed missile purchase
attempt.

Osman Baydemir : " Les Armeniens Etaient Le Petit Dejeuner "

OSMAN BAYDEMIR : ” LES ARMENIENS ETAIENT LE PETIT DEJEUNER ”
Stephane

amenews.com
jeudi 30 juin 2011
