STL indictments of Hezbollah members are meaningless: Larijani

STL indictments of Hezbollah members are meaningless: Larijani

LENGTH: 393 words

TEHRAN, July 2 (MNA) — Iranian Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani has said
that the indictments issued against four Hezbollah members over the
assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri are
meaningless, especially since the indictments were issued by a court
dominated by the United States. Larijani, who is in Azerbaijan on a
three-day visit, made the remarks during a press conference at the
Iranian Embassy in Baku on Saturday. Asked about the accusations
leveled against the Hezbollah members by the United Nations Special
Tribunal for Lebanon (STL), Larijani said Iran was well aware that the
U.S. ambassador to Lebanon was seeking to impede the establishment of
the government of Najib Mikati. The U.S. ambassador intended to
complicate the issue, but he could not achieve his aim because of the
vigilance of Lebanese political leaders, such as Hezbollah Secretary
General Hassan Nasrallah, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, and Parliament
Speaker Nabih Berri, Larijani added. He went on to say that since the
U.S.

officials had been badly defeated by the Lebanese political leaders,
they tried to fabricate a story and pressured the notorious court to
issue indictments against Hezbollah members, but nobody paid any
attention to the process because it was clear that the accusations
were totally false and malicious. “Why don’t the Americans try to
investigate any of the murders committed in Gaza and Palestine? Why
haven’t they facilitated the establishment of any tribunal for those
crimes?” Larijani said. Asked about the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,
Larijani said Iran is ready to help resolve the conflict. He stated
that there are many rational ways the conflict can be resolved without
the deployment of UN peacekeeping troops, adding that such a move
would create more problems in the region. The conflict between
Azerbaijan and Armenia began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial
claims against Azerbaijan. The two countries signed a ceasefire
agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the Minsk Group of the
Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe — Russia, France,
and the U.S. — are currently mediating in the peace negotiations.
Larijani also said the best way to resolve the conflict would be for
the countries to reach a mutual agreement, and regional countries can
help the process through a defined framework. MJH/HG END MNA

Armenia seizes 90 kg of heroine in one catch

TBILISI July 2

Armenia has seized 90 kilograms of heroine from a routine check-up at
the South Caucasus country’s international airport near Yerevan,
Armenian media reported Saturday.

The stash of narcotic drugs was found during an inspection over the
cargo section of the airport electrical home appliances transported
from Denmark and the Netherlands on Friday, the sources said, without
detailing the package or the destination of the “drugged” cargo.

Armenian media quoted anti-narcotic authorities as saying that two
persons had been detained in connection with the finding of the
heroine stash.

Armenia registered 1,524 cases of drug trafficking in 2010 and seized
126.5 kilograms of various narcotic drugs, doubling the 2009 seizure
of 56.8 kilograms of drugs.

Last year’s largest single seizure was made in April, when 10
kilograms of heroine, 5 kilograms of methamphetamine and 2 kilograms
of cocaine were found and seized from a stash near Armenia’s Lake
Sevan tourist resort.

Due to its geographical position in between Asia and Europe, Armenia
has been witnessing a sharp upturn in drug trafficking and drug abuse.

Armenian law-enforcing authorities have claimed that most of the
trafficked drugs had originated from Asia and destined for Europe.

Tchaikovsky competition ends in Cold War era scandal

MOSCOW, June 30 2011

The classic music competition bearing the name of Tchaikovsky and made
famous by the young Van Cliburn ended in scandal Thursday befitting
its storied Cold War era past.

The prestigious piano prize at the quadrennial event went to Russia’s
Daniil Trifonov, while the violin award was kept by the judges after
both the local entry and an Israeli candidate were deemed to be only
worthy of joint second.

“We can all call the 14th International Tchaikovsky Competition a
success,” Russia Culture Minister Alexander Avdeyev told the award
ceremony.

“This was a grand celebration for all music lovers.”

The Moscow Conservatory grounds have been home to intrigue since the
inaugural grand prize went to the young US pianist Van Cliburn in 1958
— a decision so stunning it had to be approved by Soviet leader
Nikita Khrushchev.

Soviet legend says that the imposing figure asked the quivering head
of the Tchaikovsky jury if Cliburn was really the best man. A nod in
the affirmative drew the gruff Khrushchev response: “Then give him the
prize.”

The Soviet Union’s perception of its cultural supremacy was restored
at subsequent competitions and most of the prizes have since gone to
local stars.

Trifonov was born in the central Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod in
1991 and studied at the renowned Moscow Gnessin Special Music School.
His personal biography say he also composes piano and orchestra music.

The cello award went to Armenia’s Narek Hakhnazaryan while voice was
won by two South Koreans — Sun Young Seo for women and Jong Min Park
for the men.

But the awards ceremony was preceded by two weeks of competition
during which some of the biggest names got axed by a jury that faced
criticism not only from music critics but even the government’s main
newspaper.

“In almost every category, all the bright personalities were
eliminated by the third round,” the Rossiyskaya Gazeta daily said.

“By tradition, the judges’ decisions were the most widely-debated part
of the whole competition.”

Organisers have dismissed all criticism and boasted that the event was
only gaining in significance because its performances could now be
watched online for the first time.

The final ceremony was expected to watched by up to a million people online.

Some critics however think the grand event may hold more sentimental
value for the nation than it does relevance for the international
music community as a whole.

“The Tchaikovsky competition is our everything. More than simply a
contest between musicians, more than just one of the main brands of
Soviet culture,” Kommersant daily music critic Dmitry Renansky wrote
on the Openspace.ru website.

“In the Soviet Union, the Tchaikovsky competition was an oasis of
liberalism and free thinking, even if it was controlled. Where else
could people openly say that foreigners were better than Soviet
citizens?”

But he lamented that today’s Tchaikovsky judges still clung to
romantic traditions favoured in bygone eras while refusing to accept
the more contemporary interpretations sparking interest in the West.

“At the Tchaikovsky competition, what was always valued the most was
the grand concert style — pompous, large-scale and solid as
reinforced concrete.

“At the start of the 21st century, completely different aesthetics are
running the show.”

BAKU: NATO Special Envoy: Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict Cannot Be Resolv

NATO SPECIAL ENVOY: NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT CANNOT BE RESOLVED MILITARILY

Trend

Azerbaijan

NATO’s position on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is very clear:
the conflict cannot be resolved militarily, and the use of force
will only result in the loss of military potential for all parties,
as well as the collapse of political and economic components, NATO
Secretary General’s Special Representative for the South Caucasus
and Central Asia, James Appathurai believes.

“We will continue to support all parties so that they follow the
diplomatic process”, Appathurai said in an interview with ArmInfo.

He said NATO maintains that there are no winners if the
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is to be resolved militarily.

“Of course NATO is not involved in the negotiations, but if we talk
in general terms I would like to make a few comments: we are all
disappointed that the presidents’ Kazan meeting failed to achieve
a significant progress in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The Kazan
meeting was a good opportunity to achieve substantial progress and
unfortunately, it did not happen. The only way forward is a diplomatic
way,” Appathurai said.

The Presidents Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, Dmitry Medvedev of Russia
and Serzh Sargsyan of Armenia discussed the basic principles of
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement in Kazan. The presidents’
summit ended without reaching agreements on the basic principles,
but presidents each mentioned that there is some progress toward
attaining this goal, a joint statement after the summit in Kazan said.

Appathurai said that the diplomatic way is the only way to a balanced
and mutually acceptable resolution.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994.

The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. –
are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.

The Azerbaijani state and army are able to liberate occupied lands
in a less than a week when even there is an outside intervention.

The statement came from Aydin Mirzazade, political expert and MP from
the ruling New Azerbaijan Party.

The MP added that the fact that Azerbaijan participates in negotiating
process on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is, in fact, a chance given
to Armenia and Armenian people.

“This does not mean that the Azerbaijani army has given up the tasks
it has been assigned,” Mirzazade noted.
