TIGRAN SARGSYAN MUST BE FIRED

Fire Tigran Sargsyan, put your left shoe there, and the government
will operate normally, says the ex-prime minister Hrant Bagratyan in
an interview with the Armenian service of RFE/RL, offering a solution
to the social and economic crisis in Armenia.

Hrant Bagratyan says his proposal is quite serious. When the reporter
asked him to offer a specific solution to the economic crisis in
Armenia, he said, “What I said is very specific, I proposed a very
specific solution.”

Bagratyan says the government speaks about growth, meanwhile Armenia
is weak. According him, if Armenia was ranked 89-90 by the GDP per
capita, under Robert Kocharyan Armenia was 110th, now Armenia ranks
140. He says growth reported in Armenia should be compared to growth
in the neighboring countries because they develop several times faster
than Armenia.

“It’s a unique government which contracts the economy at peace time,”
he says. Bagratyan notes that in 2011 the state budget is smaller
than in 2010 or 2090. “You will see when the budget is sent to the
parliament. Taking into account growth and inflation, it will be
smaller,” he says.

When the reporters asked why he doesn’t like Tigran Sargsyan, he said,
“This person is illiterate. Isn’t it better to be uneducated and
criminal but to have one’s own opinion?”

ANKARA: Turkey Strongly Condemns Sarksyan’s ‘Occupation’ Remarks

TURKEY STRONGLY CONDEMNS SARKSYAN’S ‘OCCUPATION’ REMARKS

TODAYSZAMAN.COM
July 26, 2011
Turkey

Turkey has condemned Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan’s speech in
which he urged school children in capital Yerevan to occupy eastern
Turkey.

A statement released by Turkish Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said
Turkey strongly condemns a response of Sarksyan to a question about
occupying eastern Turkey.

Asked by a student at a literature contest ceremony if Armenians will
be able to get back their what they call “western territories” together
with Mount Ararat, Sarksyan said “this is the task of your generation.”

Armenians attach importance to Mt. Ararat on the eastern border of
modern-day Turkey, around where they believe adopted Christianity in
301 A.D.

Sarksyan said his generation had fulfilled its task by “getting back”
Karabakh, a part of what he called “our motherland from the enemy.”

Nagorno-Karabakh is an Azerbaijani territory which is currently under
Armenian occupation. Both countries have met dozens of times to find a
settlement to the decades-long conflict but failed to secure a peace
agreement. Armenia occupies 20 percent of Azerbaijani territories,
including seven adjacent provinces populated by ethnic Azerbaijanis.

The statement said the primary duty of statesmen must be to prepare
their societies, particularly youth, for a peaceful and prosperous
future.

Turkey said it is “very irresponsible behavior” to make recommendations
to youth and future generation that could provoke animosity and
ideology of hatred among nations.

Turkey and Armenia made a failed attempt two years ago to bury a
century of hostilities by signing twin protocols on normalization
of relations and establishing diplomatic ties, which also included
opening of the Turkish-Armenian borders in two months if the procotols
get ratified in parliaments.

The statement said at a time when peace attempts have intensified in
the region, expressions that the Armenian president did not shunned
to use signal that “he has no intention for peace.”

ANKARA: Karabakh Airport Built With Turkish Machinery

KARABAKH AIRPORT BUILT WITH TURKISH MACHINERY

Hurriyet
July 25, 2011
Turkey

Turkey’s Demirci Makina has provided metal raw materials for the
ongoing construction of a Nagorno-Karabakh airport, Dmitri Atbashian,
according to the president of Armenia’s national airliner, Demirci
has no direct sales to both Nagorno-Karabakh or Armenia, says the
head of the Turkish company.

The opening of the Nagorno-Karabakh airport, which was supposed to take
place in May, was postsoned as the construction work was not finalized,
according to officials. The opening may take place in upcoming months.

The machinery used in shaping metal components at a newly constructed
airport in the contested region of Nagorno-Karabakh were manufactured
by an Ankara-based firm that has denied making any direct sales to
either Armenia or Karabakh.

“We have not directly sold any products to Karabakh. We cannot make
any direct sales to Armenia because we have to register [any] products
that we would be exporting there with the Ministry of State in charge
of foreign trade. One of the countries that we have sold our products
to may have later sold those products to Armenia,” Muhammed Demirci,
one of the owners of Demirci Machinery, whose products were used in
the airport’s construction, told the Hurriyet Daily News by phone.

Iran example

“A similar event also occurred with regard to Iran. A product sold
to Dubai was sent off to Iran. Our company, on the other hand, cannot
conduct direct trade with Iran due to the sacntions [enacted] by the
United States” due to the Islamic republic’s nuclear program, he said.

There is no political reason as to why Turkish products were selected
for the construction of the airport apart from suitable prices,
the president of Armenia’s national airliner, Dmitri Atbashian,
recently told the Daily News by email.

“We bought materials not just from Turkey but also from many other
countries to construct the airport in accordance with international
standards. We have yet to understand why Demirci Machinery is so
frequently brought up and why the subject has acquired a political
dimension. We bought those products because we thought their prices
were suitable, that is all,” said Atbashian, who is also the president
of the Karabakh administration’s airline, adding that disputes over
Karabakh’s new airport are caused by Azerbaijan’s belligerent attitude.

Atbashian, who is also an experienced pilot, said the machines produced
by the firm were bought from a company based in Armenia.

The airport is due to open in May.

Traveling is a right

The airport’s construction has prompted anger in Azerbaijan, which
subsequently threatened to shoot down any civilian planes using the
airport. In response to Azerbaijan’s threats, Armenian President
Serge Sarkisian said he would board the first flight to Karabakh.

“The international community should give an appropriate response to
Azerbaijan regarding such threats to civilian flights,” he said.

Everyone in the world reserves the right to freely travel from one
place to another, and this right has been enshrined by international
treaties, Atbashian said, adding that the people of Karabakh should
also be able to take advantage of this right.

“Before everything else, there is a matter of conscience here. We
cannot conduct any such trade while the rights of our kin are
being trampled upon. They have also come to visit our firm from the
Azerbaijan Embassy to obtain information, and we have also communicated
to them what we have told you. We have humanitarian concerns, not
commercial ones,” Demirci said.

Turkey unilaterally closed its border with Armenia in 1993 in support
of its close ally Azerbaijan in the conflict. New protocols that were
signed in 2009 to re-establish relations between Turkey and Armenia
have yet to go into effect.

Atbashian also rebuffed claims that the airport had not yet opened up
due to international pressure. “We are not facing up against any [form]
of pressure. We are only making the final touches to open our airport
to service in accordance with international standards,” he said.

“The flights will be conducted between Karabakh and Armenia first. We
believe that the Stepanakerd Airport [in Karabakh] could also be
granted international status in the future, as in the example of
northern Cyprus. International flights are conducted to Azerbaijan
and many other countries from Ercan Airport [in northern Cyprus,]”
Atbashian said.

The Man Who Would Be Israeli

THE MAN WHO WOULD BE ISRAELI
Ilan Lior

Ha’aretz

July 26, 2011
Israel

Tobmas Glastian came to Israel to become a priest. But once he came
out as gay and left the church, the Interior Ministry refused to
grant him a visa to stay here.

Tobmas Glastian wants to be an Israeli. “Everyone calls me Tomas,”
he says, accepting the mispronunciation with understanding. He has
lived here for almost half his life, all his friends are Israeli, and
he speaks Hebrew almost at the same level as a native speaker. The
truth is that he already feels Israeli in every way – and only the
official document is missing.

Glastian, 29, was born in Armenia. He arrived in Israel at the age of
16 to study at the seminar of the Armenian Patriarchate in Jerusalem,
with the intention of becoming a priest. He studied there for three
years until one day he decided to escape. He had understood he was
a homosexual and wanted to come out of the closet.

Glastian had not told anyone at the seminar about his sexual
preference. He knew the church would consider it a terrible sin
and would not accept him into its fold. At first, he informed only
his parents in Armenia, but their response left him frightened and
desperate.

“My parents no longer wanted me. They said they would rather I die than
go back home. That shut the door for me; I no longer have a family,”
he says.

Thus, Glastian was left completely alone at the age of 19. He hastened
to leave Jerusalem in favor of Tel Aviv. He was scared to go back to
conservative Armenia and, in fact, he admits, he had no reason to
go there. Three years later, a long while after his visa to Israel
had expired, he was unable to find work and decided to turn to the
United Nations and ask for political asylum in Israel. As part of
a routine process, he was granted the temporary status of an asylum
seeker that has to be renewed every six months.

“They don’t even allow me to request permanent residency status,” he
says, adding that every time he raises the subject, he is told he has
to undergo a comprehensive interview once more to get refugee status
and only then will he be able to request permanent residency in Israel.

“I don’t have a problem with undergoing an interview again,” he says.

“They have been telling me for two and a half years already that I
must go for the interview but they don’t make an appointment for me.

Every time I ask them, they say: ‘Okay, we’ll make an appointment
and tell you to come,’ but nothing moves.”

Meanwhile, Glastian heads off to the Interior Ministry’s office every
six months. “I wait there for three hours; they check here, they
investigate there; and in the end, they tell them on the telephone:
‘Come on! Sign already.’ They treat me there in a humiliating fashion;
it’s very offensive. Today, without bragging, I consider myself
more Israeli than an Israeli. There is not a drop of Armenia in me
any longer.”

A few months ago, Glastian turned to Knesset member Nitzan Horowitz
of Meretz and requested his help. Horowitz sent him to attorney
Dr Yuval Livnat from Tel Aviv University’s Human Rights Clinic who
deals with the rights of refugees, in the hope he would help to get
matters solved. Judging by past experience, Livnat is not optimistic –
on the contrary.

No homosexual has so far been recognized as a refugee in Israel.

According to the UN’s Refugee Charter, a refugee is a person who
is faced with a real threat of persecution in his homeland on the
background of race, religion, nationality, political affiliation or
belonging to a certain social group.

“All the countries in the western world have determined that
homosexuals and lesbians belonging to a certain social group, and
therefore they can be considered refugees,” says Livnat. “In the
State of Israel, at the present moment, this is not yet so.”

Even if Glastian manages to create a precedent and becomes the first
homosexual who is recognized as a refugee in Israel, he will still be
far from having the permanent-resident status he so desires. Israel has
never granted permanent residency to a refugee. “To my great regret,
in Israel, even if you are recognized as a refugee, you remain a
temporary resident forever,” Livnat explains. “As of today, that is
the unfortunate lot of all the refugees in Israel.”

Despite the difficulties, Glastian speaks admiringly of Israel. He
feels this is his country. “I love this country. In my first interview
at the UN, they asked me if I would prefer to go to another country
and I didn’t want to under any circumstances. But from time to time,
I have the feeling that maybe I made a mistake and that perhaps it
would have been better to go somewhere else where they absorb you
immediately and they give you the opportunity to advance in life and
not to remain stuck,” he says.

“Today, with all my love for Israel, I feel like I am stuck and this
hurts me a great deal.”

According to the Interior Ministry: “Mr Tobmas Glastian entered Israel
in 1998 on a tourist visa. After a number of years, he registered
with the UN and submitted a request for political asylum, and it
was decided to give him a temporary work permit until a decision was
made in his case. His visa is a temporary one that is given for as
long as the request is under consideration and it has to be renewed
every few months. The visa makes it possible to work in Israel. His
request is being examined by the population and migration authority.”

Armenia

TSAKHKADZOR. – In many cases the power of the state is not defined
through its territory. The state should be modern, secure and
prosperous, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan told at the fifth All
Armenian Olympiad of Armenian language and literature on Saturday.

In response to a student’s question concerning future borders of
Armenian state and whether the Western Armenia with the Mount Ararat
will ever be united to Eastern Armenia, the president answered that
everything depends on the young generation. Every generation has some
goal to achieve, he added.

Current generation defended and liberated a part of Armenian land. If
the future generation makes much effort then Armenia will be one
of the best states in the world. Generally, the power of the state
is not defined through its territory. The state should be modern,
secure and prosperous. The Armenian people are able to achieve their
goal. And they will if they believe, added President Sargsyan.
