JAILED TURKISH PUBLISHER CALLS FOR PARLIAMENT’S RECOGNITION OF GENOCIDE

Tert.am

Turkish publisher and human rights activist Ragip Zarakolu has called
upon his country’s parliament to recognize the Armenian Genocide.

Jailed in October amid the anti-Kurdish operations in Turkey, the
activist has asked his lawyer to submit to the Grand National Assembly
a petition to acknowledge the Genocide ahead of its 100th anniversary.

“It’s more than clear,” he said. “The Republic of Turkey is the
successor of the Ottoman Empire. It is necessary to apologize for
the 1915 Genocide, and the subsequent policies of deportation and
assimilation. From the moral standpoint, it is the duty of Turkey’s,
not other countries’ parliaments to make such apologies. ” he said,
noting that 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the tragic events .

“In the run-up to the 100th anniversary of the Genocide, the Republic
of Turkey has to shoulder such a serious and the same noble burden,”
the publisher said, according to the Turkish media.

Zaeakolu was detained on October 27, 2011 during the operations against
the Kurdish Communities’ Union (KCK), the right wing of the Kurdistan
Labor Party (PKK).

His son, Denis, was jailed earlier with over 90 Kurdish activists. He
was accused of attempted coup and complicity in the KCK operations.

Zarakolu is among Turkey’s most prominent intellectuals struggling
against the denial of the Armenian Genocide. He has been periodically
persecuted by the Turkish authorities for attempts to insult Turkishnes
(Article 301 of Turkey’s criminal court). He was earlier sentenced
to six months in prison for translating Franz Werfel’s Forty Days
of Musa Dagh and printing it in his publishing house. He was also
convicted for publishing the Turkish translation of George Jerjyan’s
book titled devoted to the Armenian Genocide.

The main reason for passing the Armenian Genocide bill by France is to
put obstacles in the way of Turkey’s accession to the European Union,
political expert Levon Shirinyan told a news conference in Yerevan.

“Whether or not Turkey should be accessed to the European Union –
that is the issue under consideration. We must be able to get security
guarantees from EU. I think the friends of Armenia must add provisions
on receiving security guarantees from EU and on progress in the
Karabakh problem. If France and Germany are very anxious, it means
they will take steps towards the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict,” said the expert.

THERE ARE “TOURISTS, IMMOVABLES” IN ARMENIA’S POLICE FORCE – POLICE CHIEF

News from Armenia – NEWS.am

YEREVAN. – The personnel changes at Armenia’s Police Force are geared
toward making the activities more efficient, Police Chief Vladimir
Gasparyan told news reporters during a briefing on Thursday.

In his words, the Police Force currently has unnecessary and unduly
exaggerated positions and divisions, and an unnecessary and incorrectly
distributed work activity.

“Now the Police Force is becoming more mobile, more vigorous. There
are personnel who are leaving because I believe they have depleted
themselves, and they agree with me. There are those who simply had
the status of a tourist; efficiency is zero; there were immovables,
too,” Armenia’s Police Chief noted.

News from Armenia – NEWS.am

YEREVAN. – After adoption of a bill on the Armenian Genocide by French
parliament, Armenia should seek security guarantees from the EU,
political scientist Levon Shirinyan told the journalists on Wednesday.

According to him, the bill should be taken pragmatically. He deems
it must be used to the benefit of Armenia’s policy.

The main problem regarding the bill adoption is linked to Turkey’s
European integration.

“To integrate Turkey or not to integrate – it is a key issue on EU’s
agenda. Meanwhile, Armenia should seek security guarantees from the
EU and progress in the Karabakh issue,” he said.
