An Easter Message: A New Birth Of The Armenian Spirit

AN EASTER MESSAGE: A NEW BIRTH OF THE ARMENIAN SPIRIT
by Aram Hamparian

April 6, 2012

ANCA Telethon 2012 to Support Drive for the Return of Christian
Churches

As Armenians, we join together this Easter in celebrating the
resurrection of Christ and also, as Armenians-heirs of an ancient
people that arose nearly a century ago from the ashes of genocide-in
marking our own rebirth as a nation.

Anti-Armenian demonstration in Turkey. Banner reads: “Today Taksim,
Tomorrow Yerevan: We will descend upon you suddenly in the night.”

We recall with pride our rebirth as a people from the fires of hatred
that nearly consumed us in 1915. And, once again, we are painfully
reminded that the blind and irrational hatred by Turkish state-and
sadly much of its society-toward Armenians still burns, and-if not
quenched by the waters of justice-may light again to burn the surviving
sons and daughters of our ancient but endangered homeland.

As a people who believe in the power of faith and promise of
forgiveness, we seek a true and enduring redemption for the Republic
of Turkey through repentance. For, just as scripture tells us that
the truth will set us free, so too will justice lead us to peace.

For Turkey’s leaders, government, and people, the difficult path
to true forgiveness must pass through a sincere confession of past
sins and an apology for all harm, the full return of all that must
rightfully be rendered to the victims of its crimes, and an abiding
renunciation of hatred and violence toward the modern-day sons and
daughters of those who lived on the biblical lands in and around
Ararat for thousands of years.

Turkey must repent in word and deed; Redeem itself in spirit and
action; Renounce evil, and all the fruits of its crimes, and render
to the Armenians all that once was and remains Armenian. These are
the wages of Turkey’s sins, and the price of its salvation.

The Surp Garabed Church near Mush, currently a barn. (Photo by Khatchig
Mouradian) There can be no better place to start than the immediate
return of all churches, monasteries, relics, and other religious
properties, not only to the Armenians, but to all the Christians of
these ancient biblical lands. Thankfully, with the support of Armenian
Americans from across our country, we have been able to make progress
on this vital new front for the Armenian Cause. With your renewed
support for ANCA Telethon 2012, we can do much more.

In the months since last Easter-which fell, as Armenians worldwide
recall, on April 24th-we have seen the U.S. House of Representatives
pass H.Res.306, formally calling upon Turkey to return stolen Christian
churches, and European courts demanding the return of confiscated
holy sites. We have witnessed our Secretary of State publicly press
Ankara to return stolen religious properties, and the U.S. Commission
on International Religious Freedom place the Turkish government on its
“black list” of countries that violate freedom of faith. And, perhaps
most tellingly, we have watched-skeptically, but with interest-as
Turkey itself has felt compelled to begin speaking and even taking
token action regarding the return of religious properties.

To be sure, Secretary Clinton’s remarks fall far short of the type
of moral pressure America should be exerting upon Ankara, and Turkey
itself has shown no sign that it has deviated in the least from its
longstanding aim of cementing the gains of its genocidal crimes. In
fact, all signs point to Ankara tactically responding to international
pressure by creating the illusion of tolerance through “reforms,”
that, even if fully implemented, would only return a small fraction
of the thousands of religious properties belonging to Armenians,
Greeks, Assyrians, Arameans, Syriacs, and other Christians.

The ANCA’s Chairman, in February of this year, at a conference in
Antelias, Lebanon, hosted by Armenian religious leader, Aram I, who
heads the Great House of Cilicia, spoke powerfully to the broader moral
issues at stake in the growing movement to restore Christian churches
on the territory of present-day Turkey to their rightful owners:

As we approach the end of a century in which all the moral and material
costs of the Armenian Genocide have fallen upon the victims of this
crime, we seek, for ourselves and all humanity, a new era, a better
century-guided by the ethic that the burdens of this genocide and all
genocides will, as they rightly must, be borne by its perpetrator. The
return of churches, Turkey’s surrender-voluntary or otherwise-of the
thousands of church properties it stole from Armenians, Assyrians,
Greeks, Syriacs, and other Christians prior to, during, and after
the Armenian Genocide era, would represent a meaningful first step
by the Turkish government toward accepting its responsibility for a
truthful and just resolution of this still unpunished crime against
humanity. (Read the full text of Hachikian’s speech.)

As children of the first nation to adopt Christianity, we celebrate
this holiest of days by calling upon all of our brothers and
sisters in faith worldwide-Christians, Muslims, Jews, believers of
all denominations and faiths, and those who hold no faith-to join
with us in offering a prayer for the Armenian, Assyrian, Chaldean,
Syriac, Pontian, Greek, and other victims of the Ottoman Empire’s
World War I-era genocide of its Christian minorities.

We ask – in the powerful words of the late, great American President
John F. Kennedy-for the blessings and help of God, in the knowledge
that “here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.” In this
spirit, let us resolve to add a measure of devotion to our service and
sacrifice-through ANCA Telethon 2012 and countless other avenues-for
the return of our churches and the realization of the Armenian Cause.

Armenia Mustn’t Return To Soviet Past – Expert

ARMENIA MUSTN’T RETURN TO SOVIET PAST – EXPERT

PanARMENIAN.Net
April 6, 2012 – 16:23 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s key message
during his visit to Armenia was deeming RA as a significant and equal
partner in the region, director of Regional Studies Center said.

“Russia’s ties with Armenia are similar to those with Turkey, the
stronger Armenia is, the greater importance it gains. The idea of
EurAsEC’s reorganization is recently being promoted. However Armenia
mustn’t step back to the Soviet past through joining restructured
EurAsEC. ” Richard Giragosian said.

The Eurasian Economic Community (EAEC or EurAsEC) originated from
the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) customs union between
Belarus, Russia and Kazakhstan on March 29, 1996.The Treaty on the
establishment of the Eurasian Economic Community was signed on October
10 , 2000,in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana.

EAEC was established for effective promotion of the creation by
the Customs Union member states of a Single Economic Space and for
coordinating their approaches while integrating into the world economy
and the international trade system. One of the Organization’s chief
activity vectors is ensuring the dynamic evolution of the Community
states through coordinating their economic and social reforms while
effectively using their economic potentials to improve the living
standards of their peoples.

OSCE Minsk Group Nations Could Be Replaced – Lavrov

OSCE MINSK GROUP NATIONS COULD BE REPLACED – LAVROV

Interfax
April 4 2012
Russia

Whether one of the co-chairs of the Minsk Group of the Organization
for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) should be replaced
depends on Azerbaijan and Armenia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei
Lavrov said in Baku on Wednesday, speaking before the alumni of the
local branch of Moscow State University.

Each OSCE MG candidacy was agreed on with Azerbaijan and Armenia,
including France, which “later joined Russia and the United
States because of the Europeans’ desire to participate in conflict
resolution,” he said, commenting on a possible replacement of France
with the EU in the OSCE MG.

“If some party stopped being satisfied with some candidate for some
reason, it is entitled to discuss the matter,” Lavrov said.

Earlier the European Parliament Commission for External Relations
suggested replacing France with the EU in the OSCE MG.

Meanwhile, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood
Stefan Fule said in Baku last Tuesday that the EU is not planning to
replace France as the OSCE MG co-chair.

Mistrust Between Baku, Yerevan Hampers Karabakh Settlement Process –

MISTRUST BETWEEN BAKU, YEREVAN HAMPERS KARABAKH SETTLEMENT PROCESS – LAVROV

Interfax
April 4 2012
Russia

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said the lack of trust
between Azerbaijan and Armenia is one of the reasons for the
protraction of the Karabakh conflict resolution.

“One of the main reasons is as yet an insufficient level of mutual
trust and the suspicion that the other party will renege on final
agreements,” Lavrov told the alumni of the Baku branch of Moscow
State University on Wednesday.

On the other hand, unlike other conflicts, there are no international
differences over Karabakh, he said.

“No other conflict in the world has been addressed with such unity of
the global community. It is a unique situation which should be availed
of. But the main decision must be made by the conflicting parties,”
Lavrov said.

The status of Nagorno Karabakh is a stumbling block in the negotiating
process. To settle the conflict, mediators have been trying to
join two principles of international law: territorial integrity
(Baku’s argument) and the right of nations to self-determination
(Yerevan’s approach).

Armenian Entrepreneur Barred From Standing In May’S Election

ARMENIAN ENTREPRENEUR BARRED FROM STANDING IN MAY’S ELECTION
Carina O’Reilly

Global Insight
April 3, 2012

The Central Election Commission of Armenia has debarred entrepreneur
Khachatur Sukiasian from contesting the 6 May election to the National
Assembly, it was reported yesterday (2 April). The CEC disqualified
him from standing on the list of the opposition Armenian National
Congress (ANC) on the grounds that he had allegedly failed to meet the
five-year permanent residency qualification. He had earlier also been
banned by a lower election commission from standing in his Yerevan
constituency on the same grounds. CEC chairman Tigran Mukuchian said
that Sukiasian had failed to present a police statement certifying
that he had been resident in Armenia for five years. Sukiasian has in
the past offered financial support to opponents of Armenian president
Serzh Sargsyan. The police had refused to issue such a certificate
on the grounds that he was out of the country during 2008-2009.

Sukasian’s lawyers say that the ten-month absence makes up less
than one-fifth of the minimum residency period and that the decision
was politically motivated. Police responded that any period of more
than six months outside the country counted as an interruption in
permanent residence status. Sukasian was in hiding for months after
clashes followed the 2008 elections, before handing himself in to
the police in late 2009. He was then granted permission to leave the
country for medical treatment abroad. Sukasian is expected to appeal.

Significance:The CEC did register eight political parties and
one bloc for the election, underlining that Armenia has a fairly
active opposition scene by regional terms. However, there remain
regular accusations that elections are rigged and the government is
intolerant of any opposition. The exclusion of Sukasian will be seen
by the opposition as an attempt to stifle democracy, and any blatant
attempts to manage the outcome of the election could spark further
opposition protest.

Interaction Of RF, Armenia Parliaments Plays Key Role In Closer Coop

INTERACTION OF RF, ARMENIA PARLIAMENTS PLAYS KEY ROLE IN CLOSER COOPERATION – LAVROV

ITAR-TASS
April 3, 2012 Tuesday 08:17 PM GMT+4
Russia

Interaction of the Russian and Armenian parliaments plays an important
role in the establishment and development of bilateral cooperation,
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said during his meeting in
the National Assembly of the Republic in Yerevan on Tuesday.

Owing to the interaction of the kind, Russia and Armenia can speak
about enhancement of the bilateral cooperation’s legal basis and
integration processes in the security, economic and humanitarian
spheres, he said.

Lavrov highly assessed the contribution of Russian and Armenian
parliamentarians in the activities of international organisations. The
Russian foreign minister spoke in favour of closer interaction in
the format of international and interparliamentary organisations,
the National Assembly’s press service said.

Lavrov thanked Armenia’s deputies for their assistance as observers
in the presidential election in Russia on March 4. He wished every
success in the upcoming elections in Armenia due on May 6.

“Russia will take an active part in the observer missions in Armenia’s
elections,” he repeated.

Expert: Death Rate In Armenian Army Remains High

EXPERT: DEATH RATE IN ARMENIAN ARMY REMAINS HIGH

arminfo
Thursday, April 5, 20:42

On April 5, Head of Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Office,
Arthur Sakunts, presented a report on conscription process monitoring
conducted under the control of the Defense Ministry of Armenia.

The report says that over the period from 2005 to 2011 a total of
325 deaths were registered in the Armed Forces of Armenia, 72 of
them were due to hazing, 38 – due to breaching of the ceasefire,
and 29 were suicides. Given that there is an essential difference
between the death numbers fixed by the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly
Vanadzor Office and the Defense Ministry, one can say that the Defense
Ministry’s data are unreliable, Sakunts said. It should be noted that
only 10 cases out of 54 were officially reported in 2010, he added.

“According to official data, some fatal casualties are qualified as
suicides or sudden deaths, however, the public does not trust these
explanations, as the journalistic and public surveys demonstrate that
the real reasons of deaths in the army are quite different”, he said.

Sakunts also pointed out that the Defense Ministry is trying to
present the soldiers’ death as casualties or to connect them with
external factors.

The expert said that all this proves the lack of civil and public
control over the Armed Forces of Armenia. According to the conclusions
made after the survey of the Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly, the Defense
Ministry does not conduct a proper inquiry into the cases of human
rights violation in the Armenian army.

To note, according to Military Prosecutor of Armenia Gevorg Kostanyan,
a total of 36 death cases were registered in the Armed Forces in 2011.

Only 10 out of the 36 soldiers died as a result of the ceasefire
violation in the Karabakh conflict zone.
