The May 6 parliamentary elections in Armenia proved to be another
April 24, another genocide day for Armenia’s citizens, Nikol
Pashinyan, Editor-in-Chief of the Haykakan Zhamanak newspaper, said at
a rally by the opposition bloc Armenian National Congress (ANC) in
Yerevan, on Tuesday.

`The genocide Armenia’s authorities organized on May 6 has been
proved. The Serzh-led power is recording `impressive’ success in
destroying the institute of citizenship in Armenia,’ he said.

Speaking of the `white genocide’ being committed by the Armenian
authorities, Pashinyan referred to a UN convention, which defines
genocide as creation of conditions for a group aimed at its partial or
complete destruction.

The ANC member views the Armenian people as captives that need to be
freed. He warns against `pillorying’ the citizens that sold their
votes for bribes. `Captives must be freed, not condemned,’ Pashinyan
said.

Book: Jane Haddam’s New Book A Scathing Look At Suburbia

JANE HADDAM’S NEW BOOK A SCATHING LOOK AT SUBURBIA

This is the 27th Gregor Demarkian novel, making Jane Haddam one of
the steadiest performers around. Each year she publishes a polished,
thoughtful novel, with one of the more endearing of contemporary
detectives. While she surrounds Gregor with the Philadelphia and
specifically Armenian neighborhood where he grew up and still lives,
my favorite part is when Gregor is off cracking the case.

Long ago in the first novel (Not a Creature was Stirring, 1990), Gregor
met his now wife, Bennis, a member of the Philadelphia mainline. In
that novel I was frustrated to discover that Gregor was a widower,
and that Haddam was not going to give her readers much more detail than
that. However the meeting of the intelligent Bennis and the practical
Gregor, over the killing of a member of her family, remains one of
the great mystery couple match ups.

Haddam put off getting them actually married for quite awhile, but now
they are and Gregor is feeling a bit uprooted as he and Bennis have
bought a townhouse in the neighborhood and Bennis is carefully and
thoroughly renovating it before they move in. The death of Gregor’s
beloved downstairs neighbor, Old George, has left him depressed and
pondering the meaning of life. His wife and neighbors think he needs
a distraction.

As Gregor, a former FBI agent, works as a special consultant to police
forces, a case is indeed offered to him: that of the mysterious
deaths in a nearby gated community called Waldorf Pines. While
Haddam decorates her books with all kinds of thoughts, some random,
some profound, and some just irritating, what she’s really good at
is writing a pure traditional mystery.

She’s a total pro. She sets the stage, she lays out the characters,
and she makes most of them so memorable that remembering who did what
is never a problem. In this book the two deaths occurred apparently
at the same time but also appear somehow weirdly unrelated – the body
of a local teen has been found with his skull bashed in, floating in
the club pool; at the same time, another completely charred body has
turned up in the locker room of the pool house.

As Gregor makes his way through Waldorf Pines, unraveling secrets
and finding clues, Haddam the writer lays in a background of suburban
privilege and entitlement. The characters are all sharply observed,
especially a very spoiled teenage girl, LizaAnne. While the police
procedural parts are always a bit murky, Gregor works more like Hercule
Poirot than Lenny on Law & Order. He uses deduction, intelligence,
and common sense to discover the perpetrator.

While the solution is a surprise, it’s the satisfying way the story
is told that always makes me come back for another Gregor Demarkian
installment. If you can get your hands on the first novel, start
there, but if not, this is as good a place to start as any. Gregor,
through the lens of his talented creator, will surely work his charms
on you as well.

Monitors Give Mixed Marks To Armenia’s Election

MONITORS GIVE MIXED MARKS TO ARMENIA’S ELECTION

Eurasia Review

May 7 2012

International monitors have praised Sunday’s elections in Armenia
as competitive and peaceful, but criticized violations they say
undermined the vote, including pressure on voters and an inadequate
complaints process.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said Monday
that Armenia deserves recognition for its electoral reforms and its
open and peaceful campaign. But OSCE observers said the sound legal
framework under which the vote was held was marred by irregularities
where stakeholders failed to comply with the law and election
commissions failed to enforce it.

Results released Monday show Armenian President Serzh Sarkisyan’s
ruling party won a majority of seats in Sunday’s parliamentary
elections.

Armenia’s Central Election Commission said Mr. Sarkisyan’s Republican
Party took 44 percent of the vote, with former coalition partner,
the Prosperous Armenia party, coming in second with 30 percent.

The opposition Armenian National Congress, led by former president
Levon Ter-Petrosian, finished a distant third.

The parliamentary campaigns centered on unemployment, poverty and
Armenia’s long-running disputes with neighbors Turkey and Azerbaijan.

A disputed presidential poll in 2008 sparked deadly clashes between
police and protesters.

PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS SHOWED HOW DEGRADED ARMENIAN SOCIETY HAS BECOME – POLITICAL TECHNOLOGIST

YEREVAN. – Armenia’s National Assembly (NA) elections on May 6 were
not elections, but rather a financial event, political technologist
Armen Badalyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“The elections are when the population manifests a will and changes
the authorities by the right given to it by the law. The society’s
political attitude is manifested during elections, and this happened
in France. In Armenia [, however,] everything was different. A desired
schematic was formed, [and] then-[and] with the help of money-they
turned it into a real picture,” he said.

“It is meaningless for the Republicans [i.e., the ruling Republican
Party of Armenia (RPA)] to form a coalition. They can do what they
want without it,” Armen Badalyan added.

Commenting on the opposition bloc Armenian National Congress’ entry to
the NA, he noted that the matter of being or not being is unimportant.

“No matter who is in the legislative body, the levers are in the
RPA’s hands. The others can change nothing,” Badalyan repeated.

The political technologist also noted that May 6 showed how degraded
the Armenian society is.

“People are going after who gives how much money, and not [after]
ideas,” Armen Badalyan concluded.

To note, Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission has issued the
preliminary results of the May 6 parliamentary elections. Five parties
and one political bloc will be represented in the 131-seat National
Assembly (Parliament) of Armenia: Republican Party of Armenia – 44.05%
(663,066 votes), Prosperous Armenia Party – 30.20% (454,684 votes),
Armenian National Congress – 7.10% (106,910 votes), Heritage Party –
5.79% (87,095 votes), ARF Dashnaktsutyun Party – 5.73% (86, 296 votes),
and Orinats Yerkir Party – 5.49% (82,690 votes).
