DENYING GENOCIDE, MEANS CONTINUING IT – GERMAN CIVIC ACTIVIST ASKS TO SIGH HIS PETITION ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RECOGNITION

July 17, 2012 | 03:22

German civic activist Jens M. asks to sign under his petition about
recognizing the Armenian Genocide in Germany. The petition is published
on avaaz.org – an international open website for civic announcements.

“Why is it important for Germany to recognize the Genocide? What
does it have in common with it? Germany best of all knows what
effects a Genocide can have on its victims and organizers. It is even
worse when those who are responsible deny the Genocide for decades
and announce the victims to be ‘liars’! Denying Genocide, means
continuing it. A crime only ends when the perpetrator acknowledges
the guilt. We apply to the German Parliament with a protest. I call
to the German Bundestag, which once condemned the Holocaust, to show
an example once again and to strongly condemn the Armenian Genocide,”
the petition reads.

When Mediators Get Bored

WHEN MEDIATORS GET BORED

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 14:44:40 – 17/07/2012

Neither Armenia nor Karabakh reacted to the statement by the Co-Chairs
of the OSCE Minsk Group relating to the opening of the Stepanakert
airport. Though the statement was a sensation. The feeling was that
the mediators had really discussed in Baku the issue on the security of
flights and soon maybe even on July 19, on the day of the presidential
elections in Karabakh, the first flight will be held.

But Azerbaijan has already stated that any flight will be considered
encroachment on the air space of their country and relevant measures
will be taken up. The issue on the opening of the airport which is
already ready to be exploited is hanging in the air.

While the issue on the possible steps by the mediators in case
Azerbaijan keeps rejecting all the initiatives and “confidence
measures” have been clarified. Baku rejected the proposal on the
withdrawal of snipers from the front line and on the creation of
mechanisms to investigate the border incidents, and the signing of a
non-aggression pact. Now, it is threatening to hit Karabakh aircrafts.

Apparently, a couple of more rejections, and the mediators will have
to state that it is senseless to negotiate with Aliyev. Then the
only version will be Karabakh’s international recognition with all
its consequences.

Baku’s refusal causes one more interesting nuance. As we know,
Azerbaijan, along with Turkey, keeps periodically stating that the
first step should be the withdrawal of the Armenian troops from
Karabahk. Perhaps, this is the condition that Azerbaijan put forward
in exchange of the “permission” to open the airport. But, apparently
the Armenian party refused. Though it is more likely that the mediators
themselves insisted on their position.

The rejection by the mediators to dwell on the issue of withdrawal of
the Armenian troops from Karabakh makes Baku especially nervous. On
these days, Azerbaijan’s foreign minister Elmar Mamedyarov expressed
doubts relating to the effectiveness of the activities of the Minsk
Group. Baku has not yet understood that none of the mediators is
interested in the return of territories to Azerbaijan. The most they
would do is to suspend the recognition of the NKR and keep the status
quo. But this time will come especially is Baku keeps pushing the
mediators to do that so hardly.

As to the airport, then along with the fact that it is really necessary
to the population of Karabakh who can communicate with the foreign
world only on land, the airport is necessary also to the mediators. It
is difficult to say why, there can be different versions starting from
transport of military shipment to Afghanistan for the West and ending
with the supply of military shipment for the Russian troops. Most
likely, Baku is against these versions.

ARMENIAN INTERNS AT THE UNITED NATIONS

New York – July 12, 2012

As part of the 2012 ARF-ER sponsored summer internship program at the
Permanent Mission of Armenia to the United Nations, the seven participants
attended the United Nations Security Council debate on `Post-Conflict Peace
Building.’

Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and some thirty Member States, including the
Republic of Armenia, participated in the debate. The aim of the meeting was
to review the peacebuilding architecture and mechanisms of the United
Nations in order to better assist countries transition from states of
conflict to lasting peace and sustainable development.

The Secretary General stressed that support of Member States is vital,
particularly for the Peacebuilding Fund, which has proven itself as `a
timely and flexible financing instrument when peacebuilding needs are most
acute and when few other resources are available for early post-conflict
interventions.’

Armenia’s Permanent Representative, Garen Nazarian, highlighted the
necessity to address the specific context of each conflict. He noted that,
in some instances, `[The] economic cooperation and interaction could be a
valuable confidence-building measure often leading to political adhesion.’
The ambassador further mentioned that the donor countries and international
financial institutions could implement various regional initiatives and
programs aimed at the expansion of geographic areas of cooperation and the
achievement of greater interaction.

While observing the discussion, it became clear that Armenia’s
participation was crucial considering the political developments after the
1994 cease-fire agreement among the parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict. These developments offer opportunity for the expansion and
institutionalization of economic interaction between affected societies and
countries under the auspices of the United Nations Post-Conflict
Peacebuilding initiatives.

Transfiguration
A detail from a manuscript illumination depicts the apostles Peter and
John (from the 13th-century Lady Keran Gospel).

Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord Jesus Christ

On Sunday, July 15, the Armenian Church will observe one of its five
major feasts: the Feast of the Transfiguration of our Lord Jesus
Christ.

The observance recalls Christ’s ascent up Mount Tabor, accompanied by
his disciples John, James, and Peter. At the mountain’s summit, to the
disciple’s frightened amazement, Christ was transfigured in a blinding
white light; the Old Testament figures Moses and Elijah emerged from
the mists of time to confer with the Lord; and the voice of God boomed
from out of the heavens to affirm Jesus as his Son.

Jesus was characteristically reticent about the episode: he urged the
disciples not to speak of it. But the gospels recorded it for
posterity, and his church-including local Armenian parishes across the
Diocese-celebrates it every year.

Gyumri’s Octet Music School to be Rebuilt

When students at the Octet Music School in Gyumri gave a concert
earlier this month, it marked the last time they would perform in the
cramped aluminum trailers that have served as their classrooms since
the 1988 earthquake. In the near future, the students will have a new
facility, currently under construction.

The concert was attended by participants in the ACYOA Armenia Service
Program, who are volunteering to assist in the early phases of the
building’s demolition (see article below). The ASP group was impressed
by the skill and dedication of the students.

The reconstruction of the school has been made possible thanks to the
fundraising efforts of Mediamax; the Australian NGO Do Something;
musicians Ian Gillan, Tony Iommi, and Serj Tankian; and Fund for
Armenian Relief supporters Edward and Janet Mardigian.

Historic Armenia Pilgrimage

Ten Spots Left for Historic Armenia Pilgrimage

Ten final spots are available for the Eastern Diocese’s pilgrimage to
historic Armenia. Interested parties can still register through July
20; the 10 spots will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

The celebration of the Divine Liturgy at Holy Cross Church on the
island of Aghtamar, and prayer services at the recently consecrated St.
Giragos Armenian Church of Dikranagert and the St. Gregory Church in
Kayseri, are some of the rare opportunities afforded to pilgrims on
this trip, led by Diocesan Primate Archbishop Khajag Barsamian.

The pilgrimage also includes visits to Armenia’s magnificent former
capital of Ani and tours of other parts of historic Armenia-Arapkir,
Kars, Antep, and Malatya, among other cities and villages. The journey
will include a stop in Istanbul, where pilgrims will visit the Armenian
Patriarchate.

Lundi 16 juillet 2012

a Budapest
