PanARMENIAN.Net – Archbishop Nourhan Manoogian, the current Grand
Sacristan of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, has been elected
97th Armenian Patriarch in the second round of the solemn election
that took place Thursday, Jan 24.

Meeting in conclave, the members of the priestly Brotherhood of St
James, have cast their crucial votes on Jan 23 in the first round of
elections for a successor to the throne of the Armenian Patriarchate
of Jerusalem.

The first day’s voting has now narrowed down the field of contenders
to 5, with the current Grand Sacristan of the Patriarchate, Archbishop
Nourhan Manoogian, in the lead with 21 votes in his favor.

Archbishop Aris Shirvanian, the Patriarchate’s Director of Ecumenical
Affairs, and the second favorite, has receded down the list with
16 votes.

But the Dioceses of the Armenian Church in South America seemed to
have garnered a hefty chunk of voting confidence, putting in a strong
performance with Archbishop Datev Gharibian, the Primate of the church
in Brazil, a close second with 18 votes.

Gharibian was born in 1937 in Aleppo, Syria’s second largest city,
ordained a priest in 1963 and elevated to the rank of bishop in 1984.

The relatively younger Archbishop Kissag Mouradian, Primate of
Argentina, and a compatriot of Gharibian, gained 15 votes. He was born
in 1951, ordained at the age of 20, and consecrated bishop in 1990.

The fifth nominee, with the same number of votes, was Archbishop
Sevan Gharibian, who is in charge of the financial bureau of the
Jerusalem Patriarchate.

Chance Discovery Leads To Rare Armenian Hero

CHANCE DISCOVERY LEADS TO RARE ARMENIAN HERO
by Tom Vartabedian

January 23, 2013

CHELMSFORD, Mass.-Like a model ship wedged inside a bottle, Gary
Koltookian feels that’s where he belongs.

Memorial for Khachadour P. Garabedian is unveiled in Philadelphia as
a tribute to the only known Armenian to have served in combat during
the American Civil War. Joined in the project were Gary Koltookian,
left, and Paul Sookiasian.

It would be quite natural for the antique bottle-collector. One look at
his collection and you’ll see why. It comes in all shapes and sizes,
most all vintage, secured above and below the ground, yard sales,
flea marts, and hand-me-downs.

His calling card reads “Bottle Gary.” That’s how people around the
Merrimack Valley know this community activist.

One day in 1991, Koltookian was meandering through a flea market in
Hollis, N.H., searching for bottles, when he crossed paths with a
document that caught his attention

There, in some remote part of the country, Koltookian’s eyes were drawn
to an 1855 issue of the Lowell Courier on a dealer’s table, containing
an advertisement placed by a chap named “Menas Garabed, cabinet-maker,
who once lived in his very own community-next city over.”

“Wow. 1855. An Armenian in Lowell,” he remarked.

Come to find out, the man’s given name was Khachadour P. Garabedian.

He worked in the Lowell mills and became the only known Armenian to
have served in combat during the American Civil War.

Koltookian gathered information from mid-century Lowell newspapers,
old Lowell city directories, a record book of Union Navy officers,
and the National Archives, namely the military pensions division.

>>From the documents, he learned that Garabedian was discharged as
a sailor in Philadelphia, and worked, married, died, and was buried
there upon his death in 1881. He called his nephew’s father-in-law in
Philadelphia to investigate the gravesite and was stunned by the news.

There was no surviving marker or stone commemorating Garabedian’s
death.

Based upon the information he had received, Koltookian wrote an article
for the Armenian Mirror-Spectator in 2004 telling Garabedian’s story,
which caught the attention of Paul Sookiasian.

The Philadelphia college student read his article and was inspired to
raise funds for a fitting memorial. With the aid of the Philadelphia
Armenian-American Veterans, enough money was collected for the project.

Last October-eight years after that article was published-a dedication
ceremony and requiem was conducted at Garabedian’s final resting
place in Lansdowne, Pa., where a traditional Armenian khatchkar was
erected in his honor.

An Armenian Civil War sailor’s honor had been restored at last,
thanks to a chance encounter.

“There were not many Armenians in America during the 1860’s,” said
Koltookian, whose ancestors arrived here after the turn of the
century. “Those like Khachadour were among the few making America
their home.”

The 78-year-old Koltookian is a retired social studies teacher,
historian, researcher, collector, and member of the Lowell Historical
Society. He’s served on local Armenian Genocide commemoration
committees and belongs to the Merrimack Valley Knights of Vartan.

He will present a talk on the subject on Thurs., Feb. 7, at noon,
during an Avak luncheon at St. Gregory Armenian Church, 158 Main St.,
North Andover, Mass. The public is cordially invited to attend.

Yerevan’s Kilikia School: Syrian-Armenian Kids Cope And Make New Fri

YEREVAN’S KILIKIA SCHOOL: SYRIAN-ARMENIAN KIDS COPE AND MAKE NEW FRIENDS
Marine Madatyan

15:47, January 23, 2013

The Kilikia School, set up especially for Syrian-Armenian children
whose families have moved to Armenia to escape the war now raging in
Syria, is housed in Yerevan’s Nar Dos School #14.

Currently, the school has an attendance of 307 hailing from various
towns and cities in Syria.

When I recently visited the school, second grade pupils were taking a
religious history exam. I wanted to take a look inside but the school
Deputy Principal Nora Pilibosian was against the idea, arguing that
the presence of an outsider might create undue pressure on the kids.

But the opposite happened. When they spotted my video camera, the
pupils became enthusiastic and wanted to recite whatever Armenian
poems or sing whatever Armenian songs they could remember. One wanted
to write his name on the blackboard for me to shoot. Then they all
wanted to do so.

I met Sona, Rosalia and Narot playing in the school yard. They are all
from Aleppo. They had become friends in Yerevan since they attended
different schools back home. The children said they didn’t have many
local Armenian friends.

Principal Arousyak Barseghyan noted that at first the Syrian-Armenian
kids communicated with each other in Arabic and that the local
pupils thought they were doing so intentionally, in order not to
be understood.

“Two days ago I saw the pupils in the hallway speaking to one another,
and in Armenian. That’s very important. They all understand that we
are all Armenians, whether from Syria or Yerevan. There is no we or
you here,” Barseghyan said.

The principal also mentioned that the school is organizing sports
and other activities to promote greater contact between the
Syrian-Armenians and local pupils.

Barseghyan added that while the school is paying great attention to
the needs of the Kilikia School, it is clear that most of its pupils
long to return to Syria. Whether or not that will be possible any
time soon is another matter.

All the classroom instruction is in Arabic, just like in Syria.

Western Armenian is taught during the language class. One hears western
Armenian spoken during playtime and in the hallways. I heard most of
the older children speaking in Arabic.

The Yerevan Municipality has provided buses to ferry the kids to
school and back.

Right now, the pupils are taking exams and the school day is over at
11am, earlier than usual.

The kids were exiting the building but were in no rush to go home.

There was some snow left in the yard. Just enough for a friendly
snowball fight. They told me it doesn’t snow this much back in Syria.
