Syria’s Armenians Flee From Conflict: Community That Found Sanctuary

SYRIA’S ARMENIANS FLEE FROM CONFLICT: COMMUNITY THAT FOUND SANCTUARY 100 YEARS AGO NOW BEING TARGETED

The Toronto Star, Canada
February 26, 2013 Tuesday

Growing up in the 1960s, Sarkis Assadourian felt safe and sheltered in
Aleppo’s buzzing Meidan district, in what was then Hafez Assad’s Syria.

“It was a shopping area, like a village, and 90 per cent of the people
were Armenian,” said the former MP for Brampton and Don Valley North.

“Nobody bothered us. The Muslims called us ‘our Armenian brothers.'”

But now Aleppo has fallen into the flames of a vicious civil war,
with thousands of Armenian-Syrians fleeing to other countries –
as their families once fled to Syria for sanctuary after the 1915
Ottoman genocide.

With a death toll of about 70,000 Syrians since the uprising began
almost two years ago, life for minorities is increasingly perilous.

Although Christian Armenians represent only 120,000 of Syria’s 22
million people, many of them are among the country’s most highly
educated professionals. Threats, kidnappings, killings and the bombing
and burning of Armenian churches have driven thousands to abandon
their businesses, homes and life savings.

But many who have left the country blame Islamist rebel groups as
much as President Bashar Assad Enhanced Coverage LinkingBashar Assad
-Search using:Biographies Plus NewsNews, Most Recent 60 Days(the son
of Hafez, who died in 2000) for the bloodbath that has engulfed them.

Their plight adds to the apprehension of western leaders over the
future of Syria if and when the opposition takes power. Canada has
refused to recognize the opposition unless it rejects extremism and
endorses inclusion of minorities.

“Assad was wrong,” said Assadourian in an interview. “He used a cannon
to kill a fly. But what will happen if fundamentalists take over?

Christians are losing ground throughout the Middle East. In Syria,
there will be very few left.”

Armenians, as well as other Christians and Assad’s own Muslim Alawite
minority, may not embrace the regime, but they fear new rounds of
persecution and killing at the hands of extremists. They also fear
the all-against-all civil war that brought neighbouring Lebanon –
similarly divided along ethnic and religious lines – to its knees
after 15 years of strife that began in 1975.

That’s a far cry from the tolerant Aleppo of Assadourian’s childhood
memories. The majority of Syria’s Armenians lived in the thriving
commercial centre, which is now in ruins.

“Our teacher was a Sunni Muslim, and she adopted an Armenian orphan.

There was no hatred toward our community,” he said.

Although the older Assad ruled with an iron fist, brutally crushing
rebellions and torturing and murdering thousands of suspected
opponents, he understood his own vulnerability as a member of
a minority. He secularized the country, railed against “odious
narrow-mindedness and loathsome bigotry,” and tried unsuccessfully
to change the constitution so that non-Muslims could be president.

Now thousands of Armenians have joined the more than 600,000 Syrians
who have fled as refugees, some of them anxiously hiding in the
country they once feared most, Turkey.

At least 6,000 have been taken in by struggling Armenia, which has
given them aid, medical care and speeded-up residency and citizenship
in spite of its strained budget. Some have headed for even poorer
Nagorno-Karabakh, a disputed territory controlled by Armenia but also
claimed by Azerbaijan.

Many look back at Syria with longing, but with fading hope that they
will be able to return. Ultimately, says Assadourian, the flight of
minorities such as Armenians won’t help a post-Assad Syria become a
democratic society. “Whoever is in power must understand that if you
are going to run a country, you have to widen your base,” he said.

leader also made it clear during the press conference that he
does not expect a quick and swift resolution to the post-election
challenges. “This is not my struggle anymore, nor the struggle of my
‘team,'” he said. “Let people not think that this is an issue will
be resolved in a day,” arguing that creatively and collectively,
he will continue the struggle.

“I am an Armenia-centric citizen,” said Hovannisian, adding that
those who talk of leaders who are pro-Russia pro-America will have
to change their ways, or else the new generation will come and remove
them from their posts.

Hovannisian stressed that The Central Electoral Commission (CEC)
and all those who took part in rigging the election must and will be
held accountable. He also said those who try to impede the movement
of the people will also give answers for their actions. “I have to
go to the place I please in Armenia to say barev (to greet) and thank
the people,” he said.

The “barevolution” leader also said he will do his utmost to avoid
scenarios that could lead to bloodshed. “I will not allow a single
drop of blood to shed, he noted, at the same time cautioning the
authorities not to confuse this with lack of resoluteness. “I won’t
accept the citizen of Armenia to become a subject of mockery with
these official results,” he said.

ARMENIA AND GEORGIA MUST DEEPEN AND DEVELOP RELATIONS – AMBASSADOR

YEREVAN.- Armenia and Georgia must deepen and develop relations,
Georgian Ambassador Tengiz Sharmanashvili told reporters on Monday.

“As an Ambassador, I am pleased that relations are improving and are
on the rise. With the change of power in Georgia, no issues regarding
Armenia were changed,” he said.

Further evidence of the high level bilateral relations is Prime
Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili’s visit to Yerevan and the negotiations
with the Armenian leadership, he noted.

Tengiz Sharmanashvili recalled that during the visit several
agreements, including joint use of customs checkpoints on the border,
were signed. he diplomat noted that the work on the agreement was
launched by the old government, but the new Cabinet brought the
processes to the end, which proves Georgia considers necessary
deepening relations with Armenia in all fields, especially when it
comes to economy.

“I am instructed to increase the pace of development of bilateral
relations,” Ambassador concluded.

Armenia’s Ruling Party Mp Is Thankful To Opposition Leader

ARMENIA’S RULING PARTY MP IS THANKFUL TO OPPOSITION LEADER

YEREVAN. – The climate of the 2013 Armenian presidential election,
which was conducted on February 18, differs from all the others, and
the country’s opposition, which is led by opposition Heritage Party
Chairman Raffi Hovannisian-who is declared runner-up to the winner,
incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan, as a result of the presidential
election, but who claims to be the real winner in the vote-, plays
a significant role in this. Ruling Republican Party (RPA) MP Artak
Davtyan said this during a press conference on Monday, and noted that,
in this sense, Hovannisian should be thanked.

“I thank him because Raffi Hovannisian’s speeches are full of kindness,
and they inspire the citizenry with a hope toward the future,”
Davtyan said.

As for Hovannisian’s demand for the power to be returned to the people,
the RPA representative noted that Hovannisian is not a superhuman
and that sensitiveness is not the best of guides. He also noted that
Hovannisian’s votes should be preserved, in terms of the forthcoming
capital city Yerevan Council and the local self-government elections.

Davtyan also expressed a hope that the Heritage leader would not
become a prisoner of his own words and will continue on his path.

The RPA MP is confident that the election fraud, which was committed on
February 18, could not have impacted the voting results. He backed up
his words by noting that all Heritage representatives at the electoral
commissions had signed the final protocols of the election, and added
that he does not understand the grounds whereby statements are made
that claim Hovannisian is the real winner.

Artak Davtyan also noted that Raffi Hovannisian won in the communities
where the local authorities had made errors and, as a result, the
local residents had formed a respective negative attitude against
those authorities.

STAND PRESENTING AZERBAIJANI VERSION OF AGHDAM EVENTS TAKEN PLACE IN 1992 WAS DESTROYED IN TURKEY

In Turkey, a group of unknown men attacked the stand representing
the Azerbaijani version of Aghdam events taken place in 1992 and
known by the Azerbaijani side as “Khojalu”. According to “Haber7.com”
seven people have been beaten as a result of the incident.

To the event of collecting signatures for pro-Azerbaijani petition,
organized by the Hekberyu Tyurkchilyar Association a group of
oppositionists rushed in, smashed the stand and attacked the persons
responsible for the event beating them with stones, sticks and glass
bottles.

On February 26, 1992, during the war in Karabakh, around 200 to
300 people (according to Human Right Watch, and 600 according to the
version propagated by Azerbaijan) were killed in unknown circumstances
near the city of Aghdam. They have been deliberately withheld by the
Azerbaijani authorities in the midst of the military actions.

Population of the village of Khojalu, which was a firing point shooting
at the blockaded Stepanakert (among five others) was kept in the
village for months by force and was not evacuated by the authorities of
Azerbaijan deliberately, in order to use them as human shields later.

Residents of Khojalu coming out through the humanitarian corridor,
that the self-defense forces of NKR had left open, freely passed more
than 10 km and reached the Aghdam city controlled by the Azerbaijani
troops. Later, not far from the positions of Azerbaijani troops dead
bodies of the villagers were found. The exact death toll remains
unknown as the official Baku publishes data contradicting each other.

Parliamentary Commission investigating the tragic death of the
civilians at Aghdam city was dissolved by the order of Heydar Aliyev,
the investigative materials are kept secret.

Ices Mission Head: Sargsyan’s Yellow Card May Be Followed By Red One

ICES MISSION HEAD: SARGSYAN’S YELLOW CARD MAY BE FOLLOWED BY RED ONE

February 25, 2013 – 16:36 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – The head of the International expert Center for
Electoral Systems (ICES) mission disagrees that the presidential
elections in Armenia lacked competitiveness.

“With Prosperous Armenia, Dashnaktsutyun and Armenian National
Congress having failed to nominate candidates, the elections somewhat
lost acuteness. However, the presence of such candidates as ex-Prime
Minister Hrant Bagratyan and ex-Foreign Minister Raffi Hovannisian
added intrigue to the electoral process,” Alexander Tsinker said.

“Serzh Sargsyan was the only leader in this struggle. Hovannisian’s
gaining 37% of votes merely testifies to a fair number of
anti-government protesters, rather than his personal popularity.

To Sargsyan, people meant to show that the yellow card may be followed
by a red one, should no drastic change occur in the country’s social,
economic and political life,” Tsinker said.
