Armenia: External Challenges As A Result Of Internal Problems

ARMENIA: EXTERNAL CHALLENGES AS A RESULT OF INTERNAL PROBLEMS

Vestnik Kavkaza, Russia

Susanna Petrosyan, Yerevan. Exclusively for Vestnik Kavkaza

The starting point for many of Armenia’s problems today were the
events of March 1, 2008, which became a continuation of presidential
elections. It is interesting that some Russian media resources
attempted to present it as if some Western countries were plotting
the next “orange revolution” to take place in Armenia and bring the
opposition to power. These misconceptions were proven wrong when
memos of the United States Embassy in Yerevan were published by
the Wikileaks website and it turned out that the Americans in fact
supported the government, not the opposition.

Clashes between police and peaceful protesters on Liberty Square,
and later clashes between police and opposition protesters around
the monument to Alexander Myasnikian, in which 10 people were killed
and more than 200 injured, marked a distinctive dividing line between
the public and the opposition.

Six and a half years ago, representatives of the government hastened
to assure Armenian society that the page of March 1 had been turned.

However, their statement was premature, since the people guilty of
the events which took place on March 1 have not been found yet. All
attempts by the opposition to prompt a fair investigation into the
events by Western institutions and especially by the Council of
Europe were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, according to the logic of what
is happening in the world, a “March 1” might happen any time now.

The March events had a significant impact on the political situation
in Armenia. Over time, the former allies of the ruling Republican
Party of Armenia (RPA), the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) and
Dashnaktsutiun (ARF), as well as the Rule of Law party have done
everything to distance themselves from the authorities.

The March events also remained relevant in the context of foreign
policy. As a result of the March 1 events, the Armenian government,
which is barely legitimate, proved to be extremely vulnerable in the
face of external players.

In particular, the United States, one of the most important goals of
which in the South Caucasus is Armenian-Turkish relations, exploited
the vulnerability of the Armenian authorities and of President
Serzh Sargsyan, putting pressure on them to sign the Armenian-Turkish
protocols in October 2009, which caused an uproar in Armenia and among
the Armenian Diaspora. Armenian society and the Diaspora consider it
unacceptable to establish a joint commission on the study of history,
which was provided by the agreements. By signing these documents,
the Armenian authorities gave their permission for the Turkish side
to discuss the 1915 genocide.

Although the protocols have not yet been ratified by the legislatures
of both countries and the process has been frozen, the protocols do
exist and have been signed by the Armenian authorities. The plan of
the United States was to weaken the influence of Russia in Armenia
and in the region as a whole by the protocols.

Another important indicator of the influence of internal problems on
Armenia’s foreign policy was Yerevan’s indecisiveness in choosing
its direction of development. The vulnerability of the authorities
dictated a whimsical position in terms of a geopolitical vector. Thus,
Yerevan had been flirting for 3 years with the West and the EU “Eastern
Partnership” program before it turned 180 degrees in the direction
of Russia. On September 3 last year Sargsyan announced that Armenia
was going to join the Customs Union. There is no direct evidence that
Moscow pressured Yerevan, but it is clear that its powerful neighbor
helped Yerevan to “clarify” its own position.

A decision about Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union
will be taken on October 10. So far, it is unclear what will happen
to this process. Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union and the EEU
is delayed by controversies between the members of these associations.

Meanwhile, only the Heritage party is openly against Armenia joining
the EEU. Other parties generally support this move.

Armenian society remains indifferent to the question of Armenia’s
accession to the EEU or any other entity. The question of Armenia’s
geopolitical choice seems insignificant against the background of
the socio-economic problems faced by the vast majority of Armenian
citizens, high migration rates and 35% poverty. Independent protests
against the country’s accession to the EEU gather only up to 50 people
and generally find no support in society.

La Lutte De L’opposition Uniquement Contre La Reforme Constitutionne

LA LUTTE DE L’OPPOSITION UNIQUEMENT CONTRE LA REFORME CONSTITUTIONNELLE A PEU DE CHANCES DE GAGNER LE SOUTIEN POPULAIRE

ARMENIE

Politique

Zhoghovurd: Transport Fares To Surge In Stepanakert

ZHOGHOVURD: TRANSPORT FARES TO SURGE IN STEPANAKERT

08:51 * 23.09.14

The paper says it has learned from sources about plans to raise the
public transport prices in Nagorno-Karabakh’s capital.

The Stepanakert municipality is said to have made a decision to
increase the fares from 70 to 100 Drams ($0.171 – $0.145), citing
the low profitability of transport companies as a major justification.

“Those serving the public transport are private companies which have
submitted their estimates to us.

“Over the years, both the spare parts of vehicles and fuel have become
more expensive, so it is now impossible to leave the prices unchanged,”
the city’s mayor, Suren Grigoryan, has told the paper.

Azerbaijan is in the grip of a geopolitical confrontation

Vestnik Kavkaza, Russia
Sept 21 2014

Azerbaijan is in the grip of a geopolitical confrontation

21 September 2014 – 1:52pm
Mikhail Belyaev. Exclusively for Vestnik Kavkaza

The bitter struggle of the West and Russia for influence in Ukraine
and other former Soviet countries leaves less space for
traditionally-neutral Azerbaijan for the conduct of its multi-vector
foreign policy. In such circumstances, Baku is consistently moving
away from the West, relying on regional cooperation with major
regional players – Moscow, Ankara and Tehran.

One after another, almost all Western foundations and NGOs have been
squeezed out of the country within the last couple of years, while
Baku firmly refused the association with the EU long before the
beginning of the crisis in Ukraine. The Azerbaijani authorities were
well aware of the forces on which funds were spent by the Western
foundations located in the republic, and the country did not want to
risk its relations with Russia. Quite naturally, Azerbaijan, which
stopped at all the germs of the “Euromaidan”, is not included on the
new list of pets in Washington. One can recall that the US Senate did
not include Azerbaijan in a bill to provide a number of post-Soviet
countries with the status of allies, unlike Georgia, Ukraine and
Moldova. The actual loss of Azerbaijan in the GUAM configuration
indicates a change in the geopolitical priorities in the relations
between Baku and its Western partners.
In addition to that, anti-Western rhetoric is being tightened in the
country. During a recent visit to Azerbaijan of Dmitry Rogozin, for
the first time Baku harshly outlined its own position on the issue of
the Western sanctions against the Russian Federation.

“No one will break Russia, it will never bend, on the contrary, it
will further strengthen,” Deputy Prime Minister Yaqub Ayyubov said at
a meeting with his Russian counterpart. After a couple of days,
Azerbaijani Ambassador to Russia Polat Bulbuloglu said that the West
is putting pressure on Azerbaijan because of its unwillingness to
suspend relations with Moscow. Simultaneously, the Ambassador
expressed his willingness to increase the export of Azerbaijani
state-produced agricultural products to Russia in order to replace
Western goods. The diplomat also confirmed information about the
upcoming visit to Azerbaijan of LDPR leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky. The
explicit warming in Azerbaijan’s relations with the politician was
believed in government circles of the Republic to be a positive
signal. Today, the political establishment of the country shows
willingness to cooperate with the Russian politician known for his
closeness to the Kremlin.

In recent years, criticism of the double standards and insincerity of
Western policy has already already become a commonplace in the
speeches of the representatives of the ruling elite. The flames were
fanned by the resolution adopted by the European Parliament on on
September 18, in which Azerbaijan, in an unprecedentedly harsh and
peremptory form, was accused of human rights violations. In fact,
Europe categorically demanded the release from detention of all
arrested for tax evasion and espionage foir “Westerners”, including
those who so far are only under investigation. Azerbaijan considers
this approach a gross interference in its domestic affairs. Baku was
also surprised by the selectivity of European lawmakers, who do not
say a word about the violations of basic rights of nearly one million
Azerbaijani refugees and internally-displaced persons.

The issue of human rights was used against Azerbaijan by the Europeans
after a recent campaign aimed at total stripping of the domestic
political field from Western agents of influence. The Azerbaijani
Foreign Ministry says it is no coincidence that this resolution was
adopted just before the ceremony of laying the foundation of the
pipeline TANAP. According to the press-secretary of the Foreign
Ministry Elman Abdullayev, it is a deliberate attempt to cause damage
to the further development of relations with the EU by the European
lawmakers with ties to Armenian lobby groups.

The head of the Azerbaijani delegation at the PACE, Samad Seyidov, has
stressed that none of the European MPs who voted for the resolution
have ever been in Azerbaijan or are aware of the processes occurring
in the country. Finally, one of the key members of the ruling party
“Yeni Azerbaijan”, Siyavush Novruzov, has urged Azerbaijan to leave
the organization “Euronest”; in his opinion, the body has not become a
platform for constructive cooperation at parliamentary level, and is
being more and more used for the anti-Azerbaijani attacks.

Moving away from the West politically, Baku drew its attention not
just to the north, but also to its southern neighbour. The development
of relations with Tehran gained momentum after the election of new
President Hassan Rouhani. High-level delegations, one after another,
make reciprocal visits, negative articles and accusations in the media
of the two countries have almost disappeared, President Ilham Aliyev
visited Tehran in April and is now expecting a return visit by the
Iranian president to Azerbaijan in the fall. During the September trip
of the economic delegation of Azerbaijan headed by Minister of
Economic Development Shahin Mustafayev to Iran, Tehran invited
Azerbaijan to act as a mediator for the organization of agricultural
production in Russia. In order to increase the level of cooperation
with the transport sector, the head of the Customs Administration of
Iran, Masoud Karbasian, will soon visit Baku. In addition, officials
have made specific decisions on the construction of a new power plant
with a capacity of 1000 megawatts in the border zone. Finally, before
the end of the year the Defense Minister of Iran is also due to pay a
visit to Azerbaijan.

Iranian media also reported with reference to the Minister of
Information Technology of Iran that Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iran intend
to create a tripartite commission on economic cooperation. Given the
regular tripartite meetings of the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan,
Iran and Turkey, further alignment of regional cooperation between
Baku, Ankara and Tehran against the current geopolitical background
fits into the logic of the process.

It should be noted that the relations between Turkey and the United
States are not going through the best times. Turkish President Erdogan
hit out at Washington with charges of the destruction of Ukraine. With
such statements Erdogan indicated fundamental differences in the
American and Turkish assessments of the Ukrainian crisis. Almost
simultaneously, the closest allies Ankara and Baku defused accountable
CIA “nursist groups” in the echelons of power, which their overseas
partners also could not possibly like. Finally, one should not forget
that it was the efforts of the government of Ilham Aliyev, in
cooperation with Erdogan, that blocked the project lobbied by the
United States concerning opening the borders of Turkey and Armenia,
which ultimately served the purpose of withdrawal of Armenia from
Russia’s orbit.

Obviously, for Baku, Ankara, Moscow and Tehran after the Afghan,
Iraqi, Libyan and Ukrainian precedents there are reasonable grounds to
believe that the strengthening of Western influence in the already
troubled Caucasus region is fraught with the creation of the next
hotbed of instability there. The sharp deterioration in the economic
situation in Russia, which, of course is the aim of the Western powers
in introducing increasingly tough sanctions against the country, will
not contribute to regional stability either. In this context, the
strengthening of regional cooperation and closer cooperation between
the historic neighbours seems the only possible way to counter
emerging threats from outside.

Kolkata loses its favourite raconteur, Violet Smith [an Armenian]

The Times of India, India

Kolkata loses its favourite raconteur

by Jaideep Mazumdar,TNN

KOLKATA: The morning durbars under the portico of the delightfully
eccentric Fairlawn Hotel on Sudder Street have just become history.
The ‘Duchess of Sudder Street’, as Vi (Violet) Smith was popularly
called, will not be holding ‘court’ there anymore. And legions of her
fans, as well as the galaxy of loyal customers of her hotel, will no
longer be regaled by her stories about the Kolkata of yore. Smith
passed away at her first-floor quarters of Fairlawn Hotel on Saturday
at an age of 93.

The stories she narrated were as eclectic as her personality, and the
hotel itself. One of her favourites was how Shashi Kapoor (“drop-dead
gorgeous he was,” recalled Vi) met and fell in love with Jennifer
Kendall. In the spring of 1965, the Kendals, who used to own a mobile
theatre company called ‘Shakespeareana’, were putting up at Fairlawn
and Prithvi Theatre (owned by Shashi’s father Prithviraj Kapoor) also
happened to staging shows at New Empire at the same time. Jennifer had
gone to watch a show there and it was “love at first sight” for
Shashi, who courted Jennifer, joined ‘Shakespeareana’ and eloped with
her to Bombay to get married after her father Geoffrey refused
permission for marriage. The couple spent their honeymoon in Room No
17 of Fairlawn, and Vi named it ‘The Shashi Kapoor Room’.

Vi was also very fond of telling visitors about Patrick Swayze who
stayed at the Fairlawn while shooting for ‘The City Of Joy’ in 1991.
“He was very nice and soft-spoken. He had told me about the ranches he
owned in California and New Mexico, about his wife Lisa and his
childhood,” the coiffed and elaborately made-up Vi told this
correspondent a couple of years ago. She was also an encyclopedia on
the Calcutta of the glorious past.

Violet Smith was an Armenian whose grandfather escaped the genocide of
the Armenians by the Ottomans in Turkey in 1915 and reached India
through Iran and Afghanistan. Violet married Edward Frederick Smith, a
British army officer, in 1944 and moved to England later, but returned
in 1962 to take over the affairs of Fairlawn. Violet’s mother Rosie
Sarkies had bought the property from two British ladies in 1936. The
sprawling structure that houses the hotel is 231 years old now, having
been constructed by one William Ford in 1783.

Vi lent her personality to the hotel she dearly loved. Stepping in
through the iron gates of the hotel is like entering a green oasis set
amidst the bustle of the city. A profusion of plants, mostly palms,
provides an immediate soothing experience and leads to the portico
where, every morning, the redoubtable Violet used to hold court. Not
just the abundance of potted plants, the colour of the walls, linen,
wicker and cane chairs, settees and stools, many of the draperies and
even some of the crockery are green or have splashes of it. It’s
Violet’s favourite colour. “Green symbolizes freshness, vibrancy and
reminds one of nature,” she used to say.

Other regular guests at Fairlawn that Vi would often talk about were
filmmakers Ismail Merchant and James Ivory, actors Melvyn Douglas,
Penelope Cruz, Julie Christie, Felicity Kendal (Jennifer Kapoor’s
sister) and Om Puri, writers Gunter Grass, Eric Newby, Dominique
Lapierre, Ian Hislop and Glen Balfour-Paul, British playwright Tom
Stoppard, TV presenters Dan Cruikshank and Clive Anderson, and even
Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner (Sting, for the uninformed)!

And all have paid glowing tributes to the hotel and its wonderfully
charming owner Violet Smith. Lapierre went to the extent of wishing he
loses his passport when he stays at Fairlawn the next time so that he
can stay on at the hotel forever. Newby calls Fairlawn his “most
favourite hotel”. Vi would often say her motto was to “receive
tourists as guests and send them away as friends”. For her innumerable
friends all over the world, Fairlawn, and Kolkata, will never be the
same without Vi.

Little Sparrow of Armenia Spreads the Truth about Turkish Government

Little Sparrow of Armenia Spreads the Truth about Turkish Government Lies

EDITORIAL | SEPTEMBER 19, 2014 10:03 PM
________________________________
By Rachel Melikian

Dear Deniers of the Armenian Genocide,

Turkey is officially claiming that since Armenians currently still
live in this world, there could not have been an Armenian Genocide. I
wonder whether this is your stance too? I have to ask, are you an
automaton or a vegetable? Because even animals cry; animals with
fearsome reputations, like wolves and lions will rescue and may even
nurse children. You are stating no evil has been committed on your
part in regards of the Genocide: “hear no evil, see no evil, speak no
evil.”

Repentance is in order on the Eve and the Vigil of the Centennial
Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide. Go cry before God and ask for
forgiveness. Humans are defined by their emotions and if you cannot
cry for the sins you’ve committed, then my next question is: are you
even human? Are you a monster, aimlessly and vehemently shouting your
words?

How are you unable to taste the poison of the perpetrators and the
deniers? Or are you blinded and determined to “see no evil” in your
crimes? Can’t you taste the blood in the bread you stole? Do you find
pleasure in its taste? If you have, than you must be a monster, and I
suspect the world has no further use of you. If you wipe out the
Armenians, the devil will devour you and who will pray for you then?
You must repent and ask our “Christian God” to save you, the God which
you mocked.

I am told that there were some good Turkish people, even during the
Genocide. Thanks to them you are still breathing life. God spares life
even if he finds eight innocent lives, and Noah was bargaining with
God to save the innocent lives from “The Great Flood.” Like Noah,
Grandma bargained with God notifying Him that there are still some
good Turks living amongst the evil Turks. They have committed the most
barbaric atrocities in human history and refuse to own up to it. I
know that all that is needed for evil to prosper is for a good man to
remain idle, so I will remain skeptical until I have seen proof of
action. Where are the good Turks now? Have they become mute due to
your brutal policies? Do they “speak no evil?”

Save our churches and let all the Armenian Church bells ring, so that
our ancestors hear your conscience. You must beg for apology for your
desecrations, cultural and historical destructions, and for the grand
theft of the Armenian wealth. You must ask for forgiveness from the
survivors, and most importantly from our martyrs for the Great Evil:
the Genocide you committed.

Maybe you have even turned deaf: do you “hear no evil?” In case you
didn’t hear, since your “crime against humanity” devoured your human
soul, our belfries were relentlessly ringing for you to hear your
conscience.

I suppose you must be a beast. The Grandmother of Armenia’s prayers
could only help you if you were to truly repent. You are here because
there are some of you who were innocent, as Grandma told the world for
goodwill. When you mocked our prayers to our “Christian God,” you did
not know they were for you, even when you ordered for Grandmother of
Armenia, her children, and her grandchildren to be wiped out from
existence.

But you still insist you “see no evil” in your own backyard. You don’t
even allow the dead you murdered to rest in peace. Instead, you
desecrate every sacred and holy historical place, including the graves
of the dead.

Are you “Big Foot”? Are you a rabid animal that you are destroying
everything you lay your hands on? Destroying precious treasures as
though they were trash, ruining all that you see, and leaving your
monstrous imprint behind? Don’t you understand the land of Armenia is
a holy and sacred place? A place where God created His terrestrial
paradise, the Garden of Eden? A place where Noah landed his Ark on
Mount Ararat and saved civilization from destruction? Didn’t you hear
God asking you, “Where is your brother Abel?” Though you left Him
unanswered for a century? Couldn’t you see the innocent bloodshed from
your massacres? Couldn’t you hear the unborn babies cry when your
soldiers brutally murdered them, all before they had the chance to see
the light of day?

Turkish people murdered our fathers, mothers, and grandparents, they
beheaded our intellectuals and leaders, burned our martyrs in our
churches, and brutally killed our children and grandchildren in cold
blood. They slit the throats of babies and elders alike, and now they
wish to hide behind the passage of time and pretend as though this
never happened. “Hear no evil, see no evil, and speak no evil,” of
your own “crime against humanity.”

Are you planning an “eternal bestial feast” where you will eat our
stolen bread, imbued with lies and genocidal policy? Will you cheer
and raise a cup of wine stolen from our vineyards while you lie to the
world, determined to “hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil”? How
are you able to hide your beastly horns and tails from the world
dignitaries, old and new rising powers, multinationals and businesses?

You can never escape death, nor God’s judgment, and neither “eternal
damnation.” Repent before you sell the world’s soul to the devil.
Remember, God is watching you, waiting for your answer.

You may think that there is no God; even so I pray to God for proof of
good Turks. Grandmother of Armenia has prayed for you and for
goodwill, yet you continue to lie and deny from your perch in our
ancestral lands: the Land of Armenia. Have you ever heard the words
“Thou shall not lie”?

You shaped history with your lies and you won’t allow justice to
prevail. Your lies are a cancer that rapidly spreads worldwide. But
despite your efforts, the stories of the survivors remain. The truth
shall be revealed.

Are you oblivious to your surroundings: you destroy, burn, and bring
everything into ruins? Can’t you see that the Highland of Armenia is
an open air museum with written historical monuments? Are you numb?
Should we call the doctor to check for your lost senses seeing as you
cannot walk and you crawl like a snake?

Your eyelevel vision is limited to the ground; however, you manage to
turn the cradle of civilizations into a ghost city. There was humanity
in the Armenian Plateau before the stone ages (over 100,000 years
ago), yet you wish to wipe the traces of civilization with your “Big
Foot”: there is no sacredness for you. Are you a pig, as Matthew 7:6
says, “Do not give what is holy to the dogs, and do not throw your
pearls before the swine [pigs], or they will trample them under their
feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.” Do not trust the enemy around
your pearls as he tramples world civilization like a beast, destroys
all holiness, and tries to rule with his animal instinct.

Now, you have become a rabid animal.

You have complete amnesia in regards to truth and history. You don’t
remember the crimes you committed, neither the genocide, nor the
history of Armenia being the cradle of civilization, the land of truth
and salvation. A computer automaton has memory. If it no longer does,
a virus has wiped out its memory. Is your brain being attacked by a
virus? Conveniently, Armenia has been wiped out from biblical maps,
where God created the Garden of Eden, where Noah’s Ark landed on Mount
Ararat, and to where Jesus corresponded with the Armenian King, and
sent his two Apostles. It seems all due to your amnesia you don’t
recall anything.

I’m sorry, but are you in a coma? Are you brain dead and in a
vegetable state? In this case, should we pull the plug? Grandmother of
Armenia would have never stopped praying for you unless you continue
your evil ways. She fervently prayed for you and now you’ve killed
her, silencing her prayers forever. Now your life is in danger. You
sent your wolves out to devour Grandma — unaware that even the wolves,
unlike you, would have enough humanity to spare her life the moment
they saw her grandchildren and heard her prayers. I suppose I should
pick up the prayers and pray for you…

“Wisdom of the Father — O Jesus — give me the wisdom to always think,
speak, and do what is good in Thy sight and in every hour of the day;
save me from evil thoughts, words, and deeds. Have mercy upon all your
creatures, especially upon me, great sinners we may be. Amen.”

God, help the deniers to recognize their evil acts and crimes. Deliver
the enemy from their evil mentality and guard their souls, to save
humanity from their evil destruction.

God grant the world the wisdom of Jesus to see through the enemy’s
evil lies, to save humanity from the devil’s pawn and his rules.

God and guard the world leaders with your guardian angels to bear
witness to truth and to let justice to prevail.

In the words of Aeschylus, “Riches do not protect the man who in
wantonness has kicked the mighty altar of justice into obscurity.”

Dear world, do not dirty your bread with the innocent blood caused by
the enemy. Don’t partake in the “eternal bestial feast” with the
enemy. How dare you make this enemy the world dictator as you soak
your bread with the blood of our martyrs? How are you planning to
purge when you swallow evil? Who will protect you? The enemy will put
his finger down your throat and raise his sword to chop your head off
just like he did during the genocide for you not to spill the truth of
his lies… You are blinded by the monstrous lies. The beast wants to
lead our world into darkness and blind you from the truth. Open your
eyes to the light and defend the truth.

Artak Zakaryan. “Scottish referendum is a classic example of
exercising the right to self-determination.”

September 20 2014

In the conversation with Aravot.am, referring to the independence
referendum held in Scotland, as a result the Scottish people did not
support the idea of independence, the Chairman of RA NA Standing
Committee for Foreign Affairs, Artak Zakaryan, in particular, said,
“The independence referendum held in Scotland has one key importance,
which is irrefutable in terms of formation and establishment of the
states. This is the execution of the right to self-determination of
nations, to which any entity has a natural right. In terms of
international law, it is undisputed and supreme right, and can never
be subordinated to other political and legal norms and principles.
Though the Scottish people as a result of exercising their right have
not supported the idea of independence, the fact remains that they
have had a full legitimate opportunity to apply their right to
self-determination, which, in any way and by any political force, was
not put into contradiction with other principles and norms. The
evolution of independence of conflicts and the states, as a rule, have
many factors and circumstances different from each other. Each case
has its own peculiarities and it is hard to put definite equal signs.
But one thing is clear. Each solution (regardless of its outcome)
inevitably provides the idea of exercising the right to
self-determination and its recognition, internationally. The Scottish
referendum is a classic example of exercising the right to
self-determination.”
