[Armenian Genocide: Giving voice to those who could not have any voice]

IMPERIO OTOMANO ISLAMICO TURCO.

Trailblazing Armenian Journalist Passes Away

TRAILBLAZING ARMENIAN JOURNALIST PASSES AWAY
By Richard Horgan

mediabistro.com

April 27 2012

The very active expatriate journalism community in Glendale is mourning
the loss this week of Armen Dilanyan, who died unexpectedly on Tuesday
at age 56.

Before coming to the U.S. in 2006 and establishing a daily political
talk show on SoCal~Rs Horizon Armenian Television, Dilanyan built up a
solid reputation working for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL).

Per an obituary on azatutyun.am, he was one of the first correspondents
for the service in Armenia~Rs capital city of Yerevan and helped
launch a local bureau after the territory gained independence in 1992:

Armen Koloyan, a longtime member of RFE/RL~Rs Prague team, had worked
with Dilanyan since the early 1990s. ~SWe colleagues called Armen
Dilanyan ~QDilo~R because there were several Armens in our office
and we had to tell them apart,~T he said.

~SOur Dilo would start the day with countless cigarettes and coffee
and witty jokes,~T recalled Koloyan. ~SHe would then get down to
business: daily news, commentary, serious and frank reports on the
big world and political, economic and social developments in one of
its small parts, Armenia.~T

In recent years, Dilanyan also could be seen on the Armenian-Russian
Television Network (ARTN). RIP.

Zarakolu To Receive AAP Freedom To Publish Award

ZARAKOLU TO RECEIVE AAP FREEDOM TO PUBLISH AWARD

Publishers Weekly

April 27 2012

Ragip Zarakolu, a voice for free expression in Turkey, has been
chosen as the 2012 recipient of the Jeri Laber International Freedom
to Publish Award. Given by the Association of American Publishers’
International Freedom to Publish Committee (IFTPC), the award will
be presented May 1 at the PEN Gala at the Museum of Natural History
in New York.

Zarakolu founded the Belge Publishing House in 1977 with his late wife
Ayse Nur and has defied Turkish censorship laws by translating and
publishing editions of works by Armenian, Greek, Kurdish and other
writers, often dealing with such forbidden subjects as the Armenian
genocide and the repression of Turkey’s Kurdish minority. Among Belge’s
titles is the Turkish edition of Black Dog of Fate: An American
Son Uncovers His Armenian Past by American poet and academic Peter
Balakian, who will present the award on May 1.

Upon learning about the AAP honor, Zarakolu said: “Thank you for the
very important prize and for your support for freedom to publish. I am
pleased to accept this prize not only for myself but on the behalf of
all the publishers, writers and journalists who remain in prison in
Turkey. Although I have been released, I remain under the threat of
re-arrest as the anti-democratic laws and unfair trials continue. The
day I and 14 others were released, 14 more people were arrested. I was
arrested with no reason given and after five months, I was released
with no reason given. I am not a political activist. For nearly 40
years, I have been a publisher and a supporter of human rights.”

Sydney: Shen Yun Promotes Cultural Harmony, Says Ryde Mayor

SHEN YUN PROMOTES CULTURAL HARMONY, SAYS RYDE MAYOR

The Epoch Times

April 27 2012

SYDNEY-The Mayor of Ryde in Sydney’s north-west said Shen Yun carried
a message of respect between different cultures.

Artin Etmekdjian was speaking at Capitol Theatre on Friday night,
after this year’s first Sydney performance by Shen Yun Performing
Arts New York Company.

“It was very emotional and very touching to see and learn more about
a different culture to my own,” Mr. Etmekdjian said. “The message
it was sending was we are all free to have our opinion, to enjoy our
own views, to have our own culture.”

Mr. Etmekdjian, who is Armenian, has campaigned for recognition of
the Armenian Genocide of the early 1900s. So to him, he said, it was
important for different cultures to value and appreciate each other.

Shen Yun aims to revive 5,000 years of Chinese culture through dance
and music, depicting the cultures of various Chinese dynasties through
classical Chinese dance, and also the dances of various ethnic groups
in China.

But it also depicts some modern themes, such as the Chinese regime’s
brutal ongoing campaign since 1999 against Falun Dafa, a popular
Chinese spiritual practice.

Mr. Etmekdjian said he was moved by these themes while watching
the show.

“It shows that the troubles that has been experienced in appreciating
cultures still exists in today’s society,” Mr. Etmekdjian said. “We
should not harm any human beings because of their beliefs or their
cultures.”

Reporting by De Ming and Ethen Yang.

Shen Yun Performing Arts, based in New York, tours the world on a
mission to revive traditional Chinese culture. Shen Yun Performing
Arts New York Company will be in Sydney, Australia, through May 6.
