Faith, brick by brick

There are numerous churches throughout the Capital. R.V. SMITH tells
us how they came to be

Delhi’s Christian link dates back to the times of the Moghuls. The
earliest churches were built by the Armenians who had come to the
court of Akbar in the 16th Century. There were two churches, one near
the slaughter house beyond the old Subzi Mandi, and another in Sarai
Rohilla, though accounts of their exact location differ.

According to Sir Edward Maclagan, says a Delhi Archdiocese
publication, there were 120 Catholics in Delhi during Shah Jahan’s
reign in 1650. Their number went up to 300 by 1686 when Aurangzeb was
on the throne. Two priests looked after them. A Catholic cemetery was
also in existence from 1656. Father Desideri, who came to the city
from Tibet, found the churches in ruins in 1732 (Mohammad Shah’s
reign). He stayed on for three years and built a new church dedicated
to the Virgin Mary and blessed on All Souls’ Day, November 2, 1723.

In 1739 this church and another one were destroyed by the Persian
invader Nadir Shah during the massacre of Delhi; the Jesuits in charge
of them escaped by hiding in a ruined house. One of the churches was
rebuilt in 1746 and blessed on Christmas Eve. Later another church
came up but both seem to have been razed and in the early 19th
Century, mass was held in the palace of Begum Sumroo in Chandni Chowk.

In 1857 Father Zachary of Tretti built a church which was destroyed
during the Mutiny and the priest murdered. In 1865 a new church of St
Mary’s was built and it still stands in S.P. Mukherji Marg as the
earliest Catholic church.

The Central Baptist Church was rebuilt in 1858 after the earlier one
was destroyed in the previous year’s rioting. It owes its inception to
Begum Sumroo, who later became a Catholic. St Stephen’s Church in
Fatehpuri was built in 1867. This Anglican church had its golden years
during the tenure of Reverend Robert Winter and his wife.

The imposing building won the DDA Urban Heritage Award in 1994. The
church has Corinthian capitals and stained glass rose windows. An
attraction was the organ, which was played on Sundays. Its most noted
organist was old Benjamin, whose son is now the secretary of the New
Delhi YMCA.

The Cambridge Brotherhood built a chapel attached to its residential
building in 7 Court Lane, Raj Niwas Marg. The main features of the
chapel at the rear of the building are semi-circular arches. However,
the oldest existing church in the Capital is St James’s Church, built
in 1836 by Colonel James Skinner in perpetuation of a vow made when
his life was saved on the battlefield in Uniara.

This church in Kashmere Gate is a landmark of the area and the place
where the Viceroys worshipped before New Delhi came up. It has a
Florentine dome and was damaged in 1857 by the rebel sepoys but later
repaired.

Sacred Heart Cathedral, near Gol Dakhana, was erected in 1934 by the
Capuchins from Italy. Father Luke was the priest who supervised the
construction of the splendid Italian-style building, which was
designed by Henry Medd, who also designed the Cathedral Church of the
Redemption near the Secretariat that was built in 1935. The Sacred
Heart Cathedral was to be originally built in Delhi Cantonment but
that land was taken over by the Army and the present plot allotted for
it.

Holy Trinity Church in Turkman Gate was built in 1905 and is
conspicuous because of its Byzantian-style building, domed and
half-domed characteristics. This church was originally planned to be
built near the Ajmere Gate. But the site was shifted when an
underground medieval reservoir was discovered while the foundations
were being dug. The Raj Niwas Marg Baptist Chapel in colonial style
was built in 1918, while St John’s Church, Mehrauli, constructed with
Christian, Muslim and Hindu architectural features came up in 1927.

In the same year Free Church was erected on Parliament Street with its
conspicuous circular appearance. Its best known pastor was the late
Reverend Salim Sharif. St Martin’s Church, also known as the Garrison
Church, was erected in 1929 and, like the Trinity Church, was designed
by Arthur Shoesmith. Built of three-and-a-half million red bricks in
Delhi Cantt, its Nave has a barrel vault and a square tower.

St. Paul’s Cathedral in Bhogal was also built in 1929 and expanded in
the 1970s. The Methodist Church in Boulevard Road, near Tis Hazari,
with is Gothic features, is a very impressive building with a bell
tower. It dates back to 1931. St Thomas’s Church in Mandir Marg was
also built at the same time, ostensibly for poor Christians, and
opened by the then Viceroy’s wife, Lady Willingdon. The main entrance
has stone tablets in Urdu script. Gandhiji used to visit it when he
was staying in the Bhangi Colony nearby.

Though the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage
(INTACH) has listed only 18 churches, their number has gone up to more
than a hundred with many new ones coming up, the latest being the St
John de Britton Church in Maya Enclave, which was opened in February
this year by Archbishop Concassao after a long court suit.

Thus Delhi’s Christian link continues to grow to mark it out as a
cosmopolitan city of temples, mosques, gurudwaras and churches,
perhaps more numerous than in any other Indian city. However the old
Armenian cemetery in Sarai Rohilla’s Kishanganj needs to be preserved
lest it disappear altogether.

VAN NUYS – Homenetmen’s 28th Annual Interscholastic Competition – KAHAM
Games – came to an end on Saturday, May 12 at Birmingham High School,
where local Armenian school athletes, principals, teachers, and
parents gathered for the closing ceremony, which had been postponed
from March 18th due to inclement weather.
The ceremony began with the playing of Homenetmen’s anthem Harach
Nahadag and followed with Suzy Ohanian, the program’s MC, welcoming
and introducing guests, including Rev. Fr. Gomidas Torossian who
attended on behalf of His Eminence Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian,
Homenetmen Central Executive member Viken Tavitian, principals of
participating Armenian schools, teaching staff, parents, Homenetmen
members, and numerous guests.
Ohanian paid special mention to the fact that among the guests was
George Jamgochian, who is the first individual in KAHAM’s history to
generously sponsor the games. Jamgochian was also the Honorary
President during the 35th Annual Navasartian Games. In further
addressing the audience, she highlighted that for the past 28 years,
the KAHAM Games have allowed for a safe and healthy athletic
environment for Armenian school students. At the same time, the games
serve a dual purpose of familiarizing students with Homenetmen. After
congratulating this year’s participants of the KAHAM games, as well as
the schools and parents who lent their support, Ohanian invited Quint
Chemnitz, Chairperson of the Regional Athletic Council, to deliver the
Regional Executive’s message.
`The 28th Annual KAHAM Games have brought together over 1,000 Armenian
athletes from 13 Armenian schools and one team consisting of Armenian
students, who attend various public schools. Students come together to
compete in various sports, renew friendships, and make new friends in
the comfort of a safe, culturally rich environment, making us that
much prouder of their achievements,’ stated Chemnitz, who has helped
in the organizing efforts of these games throughout the years.
Dr. Alina Dorian, Principal of the Rose and Alex Pilibos Armenian
School, addressed guests on behalf of participating schools, and
stressed the importance of athletics in relation to good health. She
congratulated and commended the student athletes for their
participation and extended well wishes for continued success in both
athletics and academics.
Rev. Fr. Gomidas Torossian conveyed blessings on behalf of Archbishop
Mardirossian, offered students encouragement to participate in future
KAHAM games, and followed by blessing the trophies.
Homenetmen Regional Executive Chairperson Garnik Abrahamian and
Chemnitz presented the trophies in various sports to schools, with the
announcements made by the Council’s staff member Nareg Medzachian, a
Homenetmen Los Angeles Chapter scout leader. Guests applauded the
student athletes’ accomplishments with enthusiastic spirit.

LOS ANGELES-Kim Kardashian is rallying support for the ANCA Telethon
as part of her ongoing commitment to secure international recognition
of the Armenian Genocide as an important step toward ending the cycle
of genocide overall, reported the ANCA Endowment Fund.

In a public service announcement set to officially debut this Sunday
during the ANCA Telethon, Kardashian explains `As we witness injustice
in today’s world and we all strive to eradicate violence and mass
killings everywhere, I’ve been doing what’s right and doing my share
in bringing recognition to the Armenian Genocide. Mankind must
recognize genocides of the past for what they are so that we can stop
them from reoccurring in the future; that’s why I’m supporting the
ANCA Telethon and contributing to it.’ Kardashian goes on to ask
viewers and supporters to `join your voice and your effort to mine and
do share and donate generously to this telethon.’
Thank Kim Kardashian on her Facebook blog and Twitter.
The ANCA Telethon will be broadcast live on Sunday May 20, 2012 from
2:00pm PDT to 8:00pm PDT (5:00pm EDT to 11:00pm EDT) in major U.S.
markets which cater to the over 1.5 million Armenian Americans across
the U.S., including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, New
York and Washington, DC . The program will be streamed live online on

`We applaud Kim Kardashian for her ongoing to commitment to
international recognition of the Armenian Genocide and are so very
proud of her principled support, as an Armenian, for ending forever
the cycle of genocide against all peoples,’ said ANCA Endowment
President Ken Hachikian. `With Kim’s support, and the backing of
Armenian Americans from coast to coast, we look forward to a
successful Telethon and to taking our work for truth and justice to a
new level.’
Kardashian has been outspoken in her calls for officials U.S.
affirmation of the Armenian Genocide, posting blog notes and tweeting
to her fans annually on April 24th, the worldwide commemoration of
this crime. In an April 24, 2011, tweet, Kardashian was clear and
concise: `It’s time to recognize the Armenian Genocide

In 2010, Kardashian called on Speaker Pelosi to schedule a vote on
H.Res 252, the Armenian Genocide resolution. In that message, she said
`It’s time for America to speak openly and honestly about this
horrible crime against humanity, and the only way this will happen is
if WE speak up first.’
The ANCA Endowment Fund supports a broad range of educational, youth,
and civic programs that give voice to the views and values of the
Armenian American community, strengthening our presence in the
American civic arena, and empowering pro-Armenian stakeholders with
the information and resources they need to take on the powerful forces
aligned against the Armenian nation.
The first two ANCA Endowment Fund telethons, held in 2006 and 2009,
raised over $4.5 million for Armenian American educational, youth, and
civic programs. Both programs touched a common emotional chord,
speaking directly to the devotion to the Armenian Cause that rests in
the hearts of Armenians from across the U.S., regardless of
organizational or political affiliations.
Countless organizations, volunteers, churches, community leaders,
local ANCAs, performing artists, Members of Congress, and state
legislators from across the nation participated in the telethons,
contributing to their enormous success. Both telethons featured
several documentaries that highlighted various ANCA programs and
numerous results the ANCA Endowment has achieved over the years,
largely through its volunteer and grassroots network.

Dollars for Nagorno Karabakh

DOLLARS FOR NAGORNO-KARABAKH

Source: Nezavisimaya Gazeta, No 89, May 18, 2012, p. 1
BY: Yuri Roks

THE UNITED STATES MIGHT OFFER DIRECT FINANCIAL AID TO THE
SELF-PROCLAIMED NAGORNO-KARABAKH REPUBLIC DENIED INTERNATIONAL
RECOGNITION; Official Washington is aiding the non-recognized
Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

Some U.S. representatives suggested upping financial aid to the
unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic in 2013 from $2 million to $5
million. The idea to cut financial aid to Armenia by $7.5 million was
turned down simultaneously. These reports from Washington could not
help making official Baku mad.

Ashot Guljan, Chairman of the Parliament of Nagorno-Karabakh,
confirmed that American financial aid might be upped to $5 million
indeed but counselled caution. “It will be wrong to attach too much
importance to what was suggested. This is but the first element of the
American intricate political machinery. At the very least, the idea
will have to be approved by the U.S. Congress,” said the
parliamentarian.

As a matter of fact, this is not the first time that the United States
aids the non-recognized republic. Nagorno-Karabakh has received sum
total of $70 million from the United States since 1998. Guljan said,
“One of the latest transactions from the United States… was used to
sweep a district of Nagorno-Karabakh of landmines. The money went to a
local organization that won the special contest.”

According to Guljan, official Baku never misses a chance to interfere
and either prevent transactions to Nagorno-Karabakh or, failing that,
to cut the sum.

In any event, direct American financial aid to a self-proclaimed state
denied recognition by the international community is something
unprecedented. Neither the self-proclaimed Trans-Dniester Moldovan
Republic nor South Ossetia with Abkhazia can count on a single USD
from official Washington. Konstantin Zatulin, Director of the
Institute of CIS Countries, attributed Washington’s generosity in this
particular case to lobbying efforts of the powerful Armenian diaspora.

“I cannot say for sure if there are Armenians in the U.S. Congress at
this point but it does not really matter. Interests of Armenia and
Nagorno-Karabakh in Washington are promoted by representatives of the
states where the Armenians occupy positions of power and wield
considerable clout with local communities,” said Zatulin. “Other
self-proclaimed republics on the territory of the former Soviet Union
cannot boast of so formidable lobbyists across the ocean. This is why
they cannot count on financial or any other aid from the United
States… It should be noted, however, that the Americans maintain a
kind of parity. The Armenians are strong in the U.S. Congress whereas
the U.S. Department of State is more pro-Azerbaijani.”

Zatulin said, “As a matter of fact, Russia too could be aiding both
Nagorno-Karabakh and, say, Azerbaijani refugees. After all, Moscow and
Yerevan belong to one and the same military alliance. As for Baku,
Moscow is trying to maintain even relations with it too.
Unfortunately, its every effort in this sphere is thwarted by
Azerbaijan itself backed by the West. It is never said out loud but it
is implied that what is permitted the United States is not to be
permitted Russia… Needless to say, it does nothing to strengthen
Russia’s positions in this extremely problematic region. There is also
the problem of Iran to bear in mind. The impression is that Azerbaijan
will actually welcome the conflict [with Iran in the hope that its
participation in the operation against Iran will be rewarded by
permission to it to reconquer Nagorno-Karabakh.”

Sources in Stepanakert confirmed that the self-proclaimed republic
owed American financial aid to the Armenian diaspora and specifically
to the Armenian National Congress of America.

Azerbaijan: autocracy in an oil paradise

Deutsche Welle, Germany

Azerbaijan: autocracy in an oil paradise

Oil is central to Azerbaijan. The former Soviet Republic, in which the
Eurovision Song Contest is due to take place at the end of May, is one
of the richest countries in the region – but it is also an autocracy.

If it takes a lot of money to put on a good show, then Azerbaijan is
surely well-equipped. When the Azerbaijani duo Ell & Nikki triumphed
at the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) in Düsseldorf in 2011, it meant
this year’s ESC final would take place in Baku on May 26. The event is
a welcome PR exercise for the country, which up to now is probably
best known for its oil reserves. It will be one of the most expensive
shows in the history of the contest.

Contracts with oil giants

Oil production in Azerbaijan began over a century ago when the region
was still part of the Russian czardom, and Azerbaijani oil reserves
are estimated at 14 billion barrels. Since the country gained
independence in 1991, western companies have profited massively from
these.

With the so-called “Century Contract” agreed in 1994, Azerbaijan
allowed dozens of oil companies, including giants such as BP and
Exxon, to exploit the oil fields in the Caspian Sea. According to
official figures, around $20 billion (15.7 billion euros) were
invested in Azerbaijan in 2011 alone.

“The contract was first and foremost about political aims and
attracting western firms to Azerbaijan, which was then heavily
influenced by Russia,” said Alexej Vlasov, editor-in-chief of the
Moscow new agency Vestnik Kavkasa. New oil and gas pipelines would
have allowed Azerbaijan to practice independent politics in the
post-Soviet region, explained the expert.

No nostalgia

The wealth of the country, just a little larger than Austria in size,
can be seen everywhere in the capital Baku, where construction work
seems to be in progress at every street corner. The two million
residents of the city are themselves astounded at the pace of
development of its streets, bridges and new buildings.

But the lion’s share of oil profits is pumped directly back into the
oil industry. In contrast, other economic sectors remain
underdeveloped, said Farhad Medijev from the Azerbaijani Caucasus
University in Baku. “We have money, but we’re missing humanitarian
capital,” he said.

Those in the nine-million-strong Azerbaijani population who have a job
in the oil industry can count themselves lucky. Their monthly salaries
are comparable to those in western European countries between 900 and
1,800 euros a month net ($1,100 – $2,200). But average wages in
Azerbaijan are much lower around 75 euros ($95) a month.

Young people such as Valerija see the country’s development as a
positive change. The 27-year-old works as a manager for a US project
in Baku. She says that with a good education you can find a good job
and she does not want to see a return to Soviet times. Meanwhile, the
52-year-old Marat doesn’t want to see Azerbaijan enter a confederation
in the post-Soviet region. “I always hated the socialist system,” he
said.

But Marat is still critical of contemporary life in Azerbaijan. “Our
potential is similar to Kuwait, but our standards of living are ten
times worse,” he said, blaming the political system that has dominated
Azerbaijan for decades.

Inherited autocracy

In a democracy index produced in 2011 by a number of experts from a
British publishing group, Azerbaijan came in at number 140 on a list
of 167, and was classed as an “authoritarian regime.”

Azerbaijanhas been ruled by the Aliyev family for almost 20 years.
Former Soviet KGB boss Geydar Aliyev was president of the country
between 1993 and 2003. When he became sick, his son Ilham took his
place, prompting critics call to it an “inherited autocracy.” Human
rights organizations such as Amnesty International have reported the
imprisonment of several opposition politicians and journalists.

In 2011 alone, 136 people were estimated to have been harassed by the
state for their political views, and three of these were murdered.
That was revealed at the end of March, when the Green Party made an
official information request to the German parliament. Meanwhile,
human rights activists want to use the Eurovision Song Contest to draw
attention to the lack of democracy in the country.

Unresolved conflict

A further important issue will be raised in conjunction with the ESC
in Azerbaijan: Nagorno-Karabakh. The small enclave in the South
Caucasus in which the majority of the population is Armenian broke
free from Azerbaijan in the early 1990s. Around 25,000 people died in
the bloody war between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The current ceasefire is fractured, and the border to the
self-proclaimed Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh is continually under
fire. Every attempt to find a solution to the conflict has so far
failed. At the beginning of March, Armenia said it would not be
participating in the ESC, because they see Azerbaijanis as an enemy.

Tigran Sargsyan: Government is constantly engaged in polemics with the CB

Thursday 17 May 2012

Yerevan/Mediamax/. Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan called the
criticism against the government and Central Bank recently stated in
the press `ungrounded’ today.

`We are criticized for the right hand not knowing what the left one is
doing but this criticism is ungrounded’, said the Prime Minister at
the governmental session.

`It’s clear that the main goal of the Central Bank is to supress
inflations and the government’s goal is focused on economic growth.
Having different goals, we are engaged in constant polemics with the
Central Bank’, said the Armenian PM.

According to him, this polemics should bear a permanent character as
`it’s owing to it that decisions are born and macroeconomic stability
is ensured’.

`There is a clear guide to coordination of monetary-credit and
tax-budgetary policy to this end. Some people just don’t conceive what
the coordination of these policies is’, said the PM.
