What Is Vartan Oskanian Accused Of ?

WHAT IS VARTAN OSKANIAN ACCUSED OF ?
Naira Hayrumyan

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 16:59:23 – 19/06/2012

Gorik Hakobyan, Head of the National Security Service gave an
interesting interview to Armenpress commenting on the money laundering
case and the criminal proceedings launched into the activities of
Civilitas foundation against Vartan Oskanian.

Dwelling on the refusal of Vartan Oskanian and the foundation’s
director Salbi Ghazaryan to give testimonies, Hakobyan said that
instead of “promoting the revelation of the truth, they choose the
behavior of a Mafiosi clan structure”.

Besides, the NSS head believes the fact that the fact that the
foundation received unprecedentedly large financial support by the
U.S. and European countries is shameful. “Our imperfect legislation
does not rule out the possibility of such financing. But if Oskanian
gave testimonies, he would attract attention to the fact that the
diplomat who has represented Armenia’s interests abroad for many
years is engaged in political activities in Armenia and publishes a
newspaper, is financed by foreign sources”, said Gorik Hakobyan.

Actually, since the NSS is engaged in the money laundering case, so
being funded from abroad for a newspaper and a foundation is considered
a threat to the national security. The fact that the funding does not
break the legislation, yet “imperfect” means Oskanian’s activities
are a threat to the national security.

What aims did the embassies of the U.S. and other countries pursue
when funding the Civilitas? If their aims and the activities of the
foundation threaten the national security, if they are directed to the
weakening of the state or cooperation with the hostile structures,
treason, espionage, then the NSS should issue direct accusations
to the foundation. The society will hardly support Vartan Oskanian,
if it is found out that he gave military secrets to the U.S. embassy
through his Civilitas.

But most likely, here we don’t deal with a threat to the national
security, but one to the power. In Armenia, they are used to identify
the power and the state and if anyone seriously opposes the power,
they are automatically labeled as “enemies of people.” All oppositions
of Armenia have passed this path. But, apparently, Oskanian represents
a particular threat, and actions relating to him go too far.

In addition, it is hardly good if the head of the National Security
Service of Armenia speaks in the tone of the Soviet KGB of 1937. The
U.S. Embassy and the EU fund not only Civilitas, but the army,
judicial reforms, police equipment, roads building and water provision
in Armenia. Of course, the U.S. has its own interests, but before
you accuse, you must specify where these interests conflict with
the interests of Armenia. Perhaps the development of democracy,
the organization of discussions, the formation of discourses, the
publication of newspapers and the creation of Internet TV is a threat
to the national security? Or maybe Oskanian did something else,
but then let’s talk about it.

If the case is connected with the fact that the Mormons funded his
foundatio, then, let’s forbid the Mormons live and work in Armenia,
let’s say that only the Armenian Apostolic Church can work in Armenia.

If the Mormons and others supported the political and not the civil
activities of Oskanian, or Kocharyan, then, let’s state that they
are banned from politics.

Otherwise, it turns out that the political figure who is accused of
money laundering in reality is blamed of political activities.

Young People Commit Suicide Because Of Religious Reasons

YOUNG PEOPLE COMMIT SUICIDE BECAUSE OF RELIGIOUS REASONS

Tweet Young people in Armenia are committing suicide mainly because
of religious reasons, psychologist Mihrdat Madatyan told the reporters
today.

“Many young people enter different youth movements, for instance
Emo and commit suicide for the idea of the movement. There are young
people who commit it so “literary” that it becomes clear they have
either read or watched how it being done,” the psychologist said.

The latter expressed conviction that mass media, films showing the
suicide cases essentially increase the number of suicide cases.

Continuing the idea of psychologist, sociologist Aharon Adibekyan
said there is even a blog for those who want to commit suicide giving
advices how to do it.

“One million 200 thousand people are annually committing suicide in
the world. This number significantly exceeds the rate of deaths from
any kind of infections. But we should note that the religion has a
great significance. For instance number of Protestants committing
suicides is bigger than of the Catholics. There are Muslim countries
were the suicides are not being registered,” Adibekyan said, adding
that the number of people committing suicide increases in Armenia.

The sociologist said in 2011 some 195 people committed suicide
in Armenia.

Referring to the facts of suicides, Adibekyan said the main cause
of suicides of children in Armenia is indifference of parents in the
period of child’s formation. Adibekyan said the adults are committing
suicide because of social issues.

“A man who comes home empty-handed while his child is hungry, cannot
bear such sufferings long and commits suicide,” Adibekyan said. As
to women, according to him they are doing it usually after giving
birth to a child or after abortions.

Eufoa: Azerbaijan’s Maximalist Approach Means Further Escalation

EUFOA: AZERBAIJAN’S MAXIMALIST APPROACH MEANS FURTHER ESCALATION

PanARMENIAN.Net
June 19, 2012 – 15:54 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – European Friends of Armenia (EuFoA) shares the
disappointment and recommendations issued in a statement on June 18,
2012 by the three Co-Chairing Presidents of the OSCE Minsk Group at
the G20 summit in Los Cabos, Mexico.

“In particular we regret that Azerbaijan continues blocking the
key confidence building measures, i.e. the establishment of an
investigation mechanism for incidents on the line of contact, the
removal of snipers and promotion of people to people contacts. The
on-going snail pace escalation of the Nagorno Karabakh conflict brings
dramatic risks for the entire South-Caucasus region, as well as for
the Middle East and Europe,” the EuFoA said.

“Ignoring the Presidents’ agreement of Sochi, Azerbaijan now conditions
every progress on the removal of troops. For good reasons, the Madrid
Principles proposed by the Minsk-Group foresee a troop removal in
the very specific context of the other parts of the package, ensuring
that there would be no vacuum of power and security, but an interim
status guarded by international troops and guarantees.

To pre-condition all confidence building measures to a unilateral
removal of troops is more than cynical and effectively means that Baku
simply refuses all the diplomatic steps proposed by the OSCE. This
maximalist approach means further escalation,” commented Dr Michael
Kambeck, EuFoA Secretary General. “A new war would come at insane
costs to all sides, and would certainly destroy the Azerbaijani
petro-industry, the source of Azerbaijan’s wealth and defence budget.

This may seem irrational but it is consistent, also with the highly
aggressive speeches of President Aliyev addressing international
audiences.”

EuFoA repeats its call upon the EU and other international actors
to stop “calls upon both sides” and instead to specify more clearly
which actions are expected from each side, as otherwise the respective
sources of the problems are encouraged to continue their dangerous
behaviour. The sides should also be commended individually for
positive steps and initiatives. This will assist a more result
oriented negotiation under the OSCE Minsk Group mediation. It is a
perverted interpretation of impartiality to call upon both sides,
when some problems clearly originate from this or the other side.

Azerbaijan’s Provocation An Open Challenge To OSCE – Karabakh MFA

AZERBAIJAN’S PROVOCATION AN OPEN CHALLENGE TO OSCE – KARABAKH MFA

STEPANAKERT.- The Karabakh Foreign Ministry issued a statement on
recent incidents in the line of contact.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic
states that Azerbaijan continues to actively violate the cease-fire
along the entire line of contact between the armed forces of the
NKR and Azerbaijan. On June 18, 2012, at 8:15 am, as a result of
gross violation by the Azerbaijani armed forces, conscript of the
NKR Defense Army Aram S. Gyulnazarian, born in 1993, was killed.

The regular provocation by Azerbaijan is an open challenge to the OSCE,
the OSCE Minsk Group co-chair states, a boycott of previous commitments
and agreements. A Óorresponding note, which reflects the official
viewpoint of the NKR authorities on this issue, is submitted to the
Office of the Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairman-in-Office.

We condemn the aggressive and criminal actions of Azerbaijan and
declare that the responsibility for the further escalation of tension
rests with the Azerbaijani side. Such ongoing criminal tricks of
Azerbaijan force us to resort to adequate retaliatory measures.

We believe that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe
(OSCE) should pass from unaddressed statements to tough assessments
and sanctions against Azerbaijan for its armed-force policy, for
impeding a peaceful settlement, arousing hatred, and unleashing a
new war in the region.

The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic reaffirms its commitment to the
settlement of the Azerbaijani-Karabakh conflict by exceptionally
peaceful means and its readiness to permanently carry out the existing
obligations of the parties to maintain the ceasefire provided by
the February 5, 1995 agreement, which was signed by the heads of the
Defense Offices of the NKR, RA, and AR.

The NKR Foreign Ministry expresses its confidence that the
international community will call upon the Azerbaijani authorities to
abandon the futile policy of blackmail, threats and acts of sabotage
and to return to a constructive dialogue for achieving lasting peace
in the region and a comprehensive settlement of the conflict.”
