THE BOOK ABOUT THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE BY HASSAN CEMAL HAS BECOME A BESTSELLER IN TURKEY

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 30, ARMENPRESS. The book about the Armenian Genocide
by Turkish journalist Hassan Cemal has become a bestseller in Turkey.

This proves the growing interest of the Turkish society towards the
Armenian issue. As reports “Armenpress” Turkish Today’s Zaman review
has written an article about this. The book entitled “1915: Armenian
Genocide” and published last month was in no way prosecuted in Turkey.

In his article in Zaman communist Å~^ahin Alpay writes about the book
of commentator of Milliyet newspaper Hassan Cemal, who is the grandson
of Jemal Pasha – one of the key figures in the Government of the
Young Turks. The columnist is also citing a quote by Hrant Dink: “One
should neither refute nor accept it. All you need is to know it.” The
columnist states: “I believe that these words are still actual.”

FOREIGN MINISTRY: ISRAEL CONSIDERS AZERBAIJAN AS STRATEGIC PARTNER

Trend Daily News (Azerbaijan)
October 29, 2012 Monday 9:37 PM GMT +4

Israel considers Azerbaijan as a strategic partner in the South
Caucasus and will always stick to this position, deputy director of
the Department of the Israeli Foreign Ministry on Central Asia and
the Caucasus Alex Goldman-Shayman said on Monday at a meeting with
Azerbaijani journalists.

“Political relations between the two countries have always been good,
and economic relations have reached a high level on their background,”
the spokesman of the Israeli Foreign Ministry said.

He noted that the energy cooperation plays an important role in the
economic relations.

“The positions of the two countries agree on many key issues, which
are of interest to the policy of Azerbaijan and Israel,” he said.

“Israel, as the conflict-affected country, understands the pain of
Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and always supported
the efforts for a peaceful resolution of this problem,” director of
the department of the Israeli Foreign Ministry on Eurasia Oded Joseph
said in an interview with Azerbaijani journalists.

Israeli Foreign Ministry is also against illegal visits to the occupied
territories of Azerbaijan.

“The ministry warned its citizens of it and encouraged to abandon
such visits,” Joseph said.

Relations between Azerbaijan and Israel have increased considerably
since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the countries.

The two countries are cooperating in many areas.

FRENCH AMBASSADOR: KARABAKH CONFLICT SHOULD BE RESOLVED BY PEACEFUL MEANS

The Karabakh conflict has no other means of settlement except those
that are peaceful, French Ambassador to Armenia Henri Reynaud said
at a meeting with Yerevan State University students on Tuesday,
Novosti-Armenia reported.

“There is no alternative to the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh
conflict, and co-chair countries of OSCE Minsk Group are working hard
to solve the problem. However, in reality, no one but the Armenian
and Azerbaijani sides will be able to solve it,” Renaud said.

He added that, there is no universal recipe of conflict settlement
in the world, as each conflict has its own specific characteristics.

“I realize that it is very difficult, however, the Karabakh conflict
should be resolved,” the ambassador said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. –
are currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.

Armenia has given a start to the international recognition of Nagorno
Karabakh, Turkish media report, quoting the special services of
the country.

According to the data of the Turkish special services, Armenia has
started working in that direction with the countries of Latin America,
Africa and Oceania. “An evidence of this are the Armenian Foreign
Minister’s visits to the countries of Latin and Central America and
the meetings with representatives of the Armenian Diaspora, during
which the Minister was urging to take active steps in that direction.”

“The Armenian Diaspora sees the establishment of the second Armenian
state and thus exerting pressure on Turkey and Azerbaijan as its main
task,” reports Regnum, quoting Turkish media.

ARMENIAN SCIENCE NOT ‘POOR RELATION’ NOW – SCHOLAR

Pavel Avetisyan, Director of the Institute of Archeology and
Ethnography, National Academy of Sciences of Armenia (ANAS), is
content with the financing.

Since 2007, the institute has been able to conduct almost full-scale
field research and organize research expeditions.

Wrong is the opinion that the institute largely carries out research
under grant program, Avetisyan said.

“The funds enable us to stop being a ‘poor relation.’ As to grant
programs, we have co-funding in cooperation with different research
centers, and the funds are largely directed to analyses made abroad,”
Avetisyan said.

Science is most expensive. Specifically, the Institute of Archeology
and Ethnography, spends a huge amount of materials and fuel during
field research. All the archeological finds need to be classified,
analyzed and recorded as museum exhibits.

This year the institute has received a total of AMD 270m, with AMD
120-130m spent on field research.

In recent years, the financing of science has constituted about 1%
of the state budget. Next year, budget revenues are expected to
increase by 13.2%, and science budget by 11%.

With respect to scientists’ salaries, the highest monthly salary is
AMD 60-70 thousand ($150-170).
