Arman Melikian: History repeats itself in Armenia

Saturday,
February 23

`Each time history repeats itself in our country: the people demand
justice and try to satisfy that demand by means of those who created
an illusion that the people are powerful,’ the former Foreign Minister
of the NKR Arman Melikian wrote on his Facebook page.

`It seems to people that this `force’ can satisfy their demand for
justice. They shut their eyes to the fact that the `force’ is not just
itself: it has also deceived and continues to deceive.

As long as people demanding justice are prepared to overlook the lie
spread by the `force’ they prefer, they will continue to give away to
despair.

It is wrong to deceive the people. People get frustrated when they
feel deceived,’ A. Melikian notes.

The founder of “Zhamanak” daily received the claim of Robert and
Sedrak Qocharyan against him with delay, so he can’t say which of the
facts will be accepted, the representative of Media Center, attorney
Nikolay Baghdasaaryan informed `Pastinfo.am’. The attorney believes
that there is not a matter of honor and dignity, but there is a
tendency to artificially hinder the functioning of the media.

The representative of Media Center said that before receiving the
application they in hand received the decision of the court which
partially granted plaintiff’s motion to seize the property of the
founder of “Zhamanak” daily “Start” Media Center.

According to a representative of the defendant, plaintiff motioned to
freeze the financial assets of the company, but the court denied that
part of the motion, because of the confusion in the process.

Because of that mistake, the financial assets of the company weren’t
frozen and the company continued its actions during the RA
presidential elections.

The plaintiffs told the court that their authorized person applied to
the company for the printing of the denial, which according to the
representative is not true, the company really received a letter from
the plaintiffs, but no authorization was attached to the letter and
it’s not seen from anywhere that those people are related to Robert u
Sedrak Qocharyan. `The same person applied to the company prior and
wrote a reply, and then he replied that he wasn’t authorized to write
a letter’-said Baghdasaryan.

January 15 2013the judge of the Kentron and Nork-Marash Court of first
instance made a decision to accept the claim of the Qocharyans into
proceeding and prepare the case for trial. The claim of the former
president of Armenia Robert Qocharyan and his son Sedrak Qocharyan,
signed by attorney Arpine Meliqbekyan, was presented to court on
December 27. Qocharyans challenge the Article `What is the connection
between Qocharyan and Tsarukyan and `Nairit’ and `And the minute pays
of Qocharyans’: plaintiffs claim the denial of the information that
damages their honor and dignity and claim for the compensation.

U.S. prof. calls to save Mren Cathedral of Western Armenia

U.S. prof. calls to save Mren Cathedral of Western Armenia

February 23, 2013 – 15:17 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Dr. Christina Maranci, Arthur H. Dadian and Ara T.
Oztemel Associate Professor of Armenian Art and Architecture at Tufts
University in Medford, Mass., has issued a call to save the 7th
century Mren Cathedral of Western Armenia, located in the Kars region
of present-day Turkey, Massis Post reports.
Prof. Maranci’s areas of expertise include Byzantine art and
architecture, and the art and architecture of the Transcaucasus –
principally Armenia. She is considered one of the world’s authorities
on the Mren Cathedral.
According to Dr. Maranci, `the cathedral of Mren is now in danger of
collapse. Constructed circa 638 AD, Mren is a masterpiece of world art
and a product of the `Golden Age’ of Armenian architecture. Bearing an
inscription naming the Roman emperor Heraclius, and a unique sculpted
relief image of Heraclius returning Christendom’s greatest relic¬ –
the True Cross – to Jerusalem, Mren preserves precious material
evidence for one of the most dramatic and yet poorly documented
moments in history. It is also the largest domed basilica surviving
from the region, and a key example of the architectural achievements
of the seventh century.’
Dr. Maranci stresses that Mren may not be standing much longer.
`Photographs from the 1990s to the first decade of the 21st century
show the progressive collapse of the south façade. Now the entire
south aisle lies in rubble on the ground, severely compromising the
domed superstructure of the monument and opening the interior and its
wall paintings to the elements,’ she says. `The prospect of
stabilizing what is left is at present doubtful, however, because of
Mren’s position within a military zone in Eastern Turkey (Kars
province) next to the closed Armenian-Turkish border. Visiting the
site is forbidden.’
Dr. Maranci is campaigning to raise awareness about Mren’s precarious
condition. `Mren has stood for over a millennium, bearing world
history on its walls,’ she says. Its collapse would represent a tragic
loss to human knowledge.’

AZERI PARLIAMENTARIANS: SARGSYAN’S REELECTION AS ARMENIAN PRESIDENT OBSTRUCTS KARABAKH SETTLEMENT

Interfax

The parliament of Azerbaijan does not expect progress in resolving
the problem of Nagorno-Karabakh with Serzh Sargsyan’s reelection as
Armenian president.

By retaining power, Sargsyan will try to preserve the status quo in
the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, Azeri parliamentarian and Chairman
of the Democratic Reform Party Asim Mollazade told Interfax.

“The settlement process has been fully frozen in the past years.

Armenia has stopped even imitating its involvement in this process. I
think this policy will continue,” he said.

Aydin Mirzazade of the ruling party New Azerbaijan also believes
that Sargsyan’s reelection will not promote a peaceful settlement of
the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. “It is by Sargsyan’s efforts that the
negotiating process has been torpedoed,” he said.

“Sargsyan’s reelection will have a negative effect on the resolution of
the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh,” parliamentarian Zahid Oruc said.
