Giro Manoyan: Turkey Events Could Mark The Start Of Erdogan’s Downfa

GIRO MANOYAN: TURKEY EVENTS COULD MARK THE START OF ERDOGAN’S DOWNFALL

16:02 03/07/2013 ” TOPIC OF THE DAY

The Turkish Summer has nothing to do with the Arab Springs, Giro
Manoyan, Director of the ARF bureau’s Hay Dat and political affairs
office, told a discussion at the Caucasus Institute.

“There can be some similarity, but there are a lot of differences,”
he added.

Turkey’s protests were mostly directed against Prime Minister Erdogan,
who made a great influence on the entire country during the past ten
years, according to Manoyan.

The Turkey events, particularly the use of force against protesters,
can affect Turkey’s position on the international arena, including
its relations with the European Union, Manoyan said.

“If Erdogan continues acting the same way, the Turkey events could mark
the start of his downfall,” Manoyan said, adding that some changes
could take place inside the party headed by Erdogan, resulting in
the weakening of his positions.

CYPRIOT OFFICIAL RULES OUT ARMENIAN PM’S EXPLANATION REGARDING OFFSHORE COMPANY REGISTRATION

NEWS | 02.07.13 | 09:06

Cypriot Attorney General Petros Clerides on Monday called in question
Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan’s assurances that he has
no ties to a Cyprus-registered company that was allegedly used for
defrauding an Armenian businessman.

In connection with the ongoing “offshore scandal” in Armenia, RFE/RL’s
Armenian Service asked the Attorney General of Cyprus Petros Clerides
if a shareholder of an offshore company could be registered in Cyprus
without the shareholder’s knowledge.

After the publication by Hetq.am of an article alleging that
businessman Ashot Sukiasyan cheated Hayastan department store owner
Paylak Hayrapetyan out of his money via a Cyprus-based offshore company
whose co-founders are also the Armenian prime minister and the Primate
of the Ararat Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church Navasard
Kchoyan, Prime Minister Sragsyan denied any links to the company,
insisting that his registration as one of its shareholders was without
his knowledge. He asked the Armenian Prosecutor-General’s Office to
look into the matter and establish who did that on his behalf.

In response to the question, Mr. Clerides said: “I spoke to Armenia’s
Prosecutor General. He informed me about the issue… This is the
first time I hear about it. He promised to submit all the necessary
documents to me before I leave Armenia. I pledged to take immediate
steps and provide a reply.”

Asked if it is possible to register anyone as a shareholder of
an offshore company without that person’s permission, the Cypriot
official said: “No. But I wouldn’t like to go into detail before
studying the documents.”

Asked if his answer means that registration is definitely impossible
without permission, Clerides replied: “It is impossible, if, of course,
he did not act through a proxy or in a similar way.”

Foreign Company Branches In Armenia Should Make Their Rules Conform

FOREIGN COMPANY BRANCHES IN ARMENIA SHOULD MAKE THEIR RULES CONFORM TO COUNTRY’S LAWS – EXPERT

July 02, 2013 | 01:06

YEREVAN. – The foreign company branches and organizations that
function in Armenia should make their corporate rules conform to the
laws in Armenia.

Corporate law specialist Artak Garoyan told the aforementioned to
Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“I have come across cases when a foreign company has imposed its
working rules upon its branch in Armenia. [But] work is regulated
differently in Armenia.

“As case in point, there exists a maximum working week concept here
[in Armenia]. There are clear limitations in the case of additional
work, too.

“The [Armenia] branch [of a foreign company] is considered an Armenian
company, [and] therefore it must comply with the laws of Armenia,”
Garoyan noted.
