Turkish wrestler may face IOC probe for racist tweets

ISTANBUL – Radikal

Turkey’s Olympic medalist wrestler Rıza Kayaalp could face probes
from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and world wrestling
governing body for his tweets targeting Armenians and Gezi Park
protesters.

The daily Radikal reported that the IOC and International Federation
of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA) received complaints about
Kayaalp’s tweets on the anti-government protests which spread
throughout the country last month after a police crackdown on a group
performing a sit-in against a controversial city center renovation
project.

European and World champion Kayaalp, who also won a bronze medal at
the Olympic Games in London last year, advocated that “Armenians” were
at the root of the Gezi protests, in a series of tweets he later
deleted.

His tweets included “You just leave the streets to Armenians, you
f**ing looters” and “F**k you traitors”.

He was then picked to bear the Turkish flag during the opening
ceremony of last month’s Mediterranean Games in Mersin and has also
featured in a public service announcement prepared by the Minister of
Youth and Sports.

Belarus, Armenia To Coordinate Positions In Interparliamentary Organ

BELARUS, ARMENIA TO COORDINATE POSITIONS IN INTERPARLIAMENTARY ORGANIZATIONS

MINSK, 12 July (BelTA) – Belarus and Armenia will pursue a coherent
policy in interparliamentary organizations. The relevant agreement
was reached during the seventh session of the Belarus-Armenia
interparliamentary commission in Minsk on 11 July, BelTA learnt from
the press service of the House of Representatives of the National
Assembly of Belarus.

“The Belarus-Armenia interparliamentary commission has agreed to
coordinate the two countries’ positions on certain matters discussed
within the framework of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly and the
CSTO and the OSCE Parliamentary Assemblies. The sides have plans to
provide assistance to each other in acquiring the observer status in
the interparliamentary organizations with which both countries would
like to cooperate,” the press service noted.

The session also discussed the ways of intensifying trade and economic
relations between Belarus and Armenia. “The sides believe that MPs
should participate in the work to bolster trade and economic ties,
diversify the cooperation in this area and establish more intensive
business contacts between the two countries. The sides agreed to
appoint their plenipotentiaries from the interparliamentary commission
to work in the Belarus-Armenia intergovernmental commission for
trade and economic cooperation,” the press service of the House of
Representatives stressed.

On 11 July a delegation headed by Vice President of the National
Assembly of Armenia Eduard Sharmazanov visited Belarus to partake in
the session of the Belarus-Armenia interparliamentary commission.

Later in the day Chairman of the House of Representatives of the
National Assembly of Belarus Vladimir Andreichenko met with the
Armenian delegation. During the meeting the sides voiced the intention
to foster the new forms of the Belarusian-Armenian trade and economic
cooperation such as joint ventures and assembly facilities.

The visit of the Armenian parliamentary delegation will conclude on
14 July. The MPs are set to visit Brest and Minsk Oblasts.

Chris Bohjalian On History, Anxiety And Writing

CHRIS BOHJALIAN ON HISTORY, ANXIETY AND WRITING

Zee News
July 12 2013

Bestselling novelist Chris Bohjalian had long been searching for
a way to write a book set in Tuscany during World War Two, but it
wasn`t until his daughter performed in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ that all
the pieces came together. The result was ‘The Light in the Ruins’,
a tale centering on the doomed love between an Italian woman from a
noble family and the German soldier she comes to know during the period
in 1944 when Tuscany, as Bohjalian puts it, ‘became an innermost ring
of Dante`s Inferno’.

Bohjalian, the author of 15 novels including ‘The Sandcastle Girls’,
which deals with the killing of Armenian Christians by Ottoman Turks
during World War One that his grandparents survived, spoke with
Reuters about history, anxiety and making use of darkness in writing.

The idea of reimagining a classic is interesting, and sometimes it
works better than others. How was it for you?

In some ways, I thought it was going to be a project a bit like my
2007 project, ‘The Double Bind,’ which is about a social worker who
believes she`s found Daisy Buchanan and Jay Gatsby`s bastard son…

But the book took one of those surprising lefthand turns, and it
evolved well beyond ‘Romeo and Juliet’. It`s still a love story. I
love big, sweeping, epic love stories, especially love stories set
in the midst of war, but it grew beyond that. It`s not simply the
love story of Cristina and Friedrich. The characters that I think
about most are actually parallel women – both 19 in 1944, and then
somewhat older in 1955. Those two women are Cristina Rosati, my
Tuscan nobleman`s daughter, and Serafina, my partisan, who is both
emotionally and physically scarred by the war… Their paths will
cross again in 1955 when Serafina is investigating the murders of
the Risati women in Florence.

Obviously ‘The Sandcastle Girls’ is on a subject that`s closer to
you personally than a lot of your books, did this make it harder or
easier for you?

Sometimes a book is a book, and sometimes a book becomes a mission.

And ‘The Sandcastle Girls’ became for me a deeply personal mission.

Outside of the Armenian Diaspora, most of the world knows next
to nothing of the Armenian genocide. I`m the grandson of genocide
survivors, so it was important for me to tell this story and tell
it in a way so that everyone would want to read it, which was why I
framed it as a love story.

I read that you`ve said ‘The Sandcastle Girls’ helped you understand
the geography of your own soul, how did ‘The Light in the Ruins’
compare?

‘The Light in the Ruins’ was a different kind of project, because
it was dealing with a landscape I cherish. I`ve been going to this
part of Tuscany every summer for 10 years. This landscape isn`t the
geography of my soul the way Armenia is, but in some ways it`s the
geography of my immediate family. So many of my favorite memories of
my wife and my daughter come from this area. So in some ways when I
was tearing it apart and showing the deprivations and the horror of
war, I couldn`t help but imagine what it must have been like for so
many of the people I`ve met there in my years of visiting.

What was it like to tear apart a place that you love and show that
dark underside?

Clearly I am capable of compartmentalization. I will always be known
best as the novelist whose character cut into the pregnant woman in
‘Midwives’.

That`s always going to be part of my legacy. Likewise I`m now always
going to be known as the writer who tried to give voice to the
whispers of the victims of the Armenian genocide. For a book such as
‘The Light in the Ruins’, I`m shedding light on a topography that
most of the world sees only as a vacation resort. Today, Tuscany
is Disneyland for many tourists. It`s all about the food, and the
vineyards, and the sunflowers, and the bike tours. But it has this
interesting, fascinating recent history. When I was writing this
particular book I couldn`t help seeing it through that lens, and I
hope I`m clarifying what Tuscany really is and what the people who
lived there endured. For a lot of Tuscans, they were the grass beneath
the battling elephants` feet.

I also think that finding that kind of history in a place that today
might be a kind of Disneyland really adds to your overall view of it.

It`s an important thing to remember.

One of my favourite literary therapists is Thomas Moore, who wrote
‘Care of the Soul’. One of the things he talks about is that sometimes,
the soul needs gray – and you simply have to allow the soul its access
to gray. You can`t force a haloed cheerfulness on certain subjects and
on certain days. And maybe that`s one of the things I do in my work,
is that I allow the soul to access its gray.

Note: Armenians accuse Ottoman Turks of committing an orchestrated
campaign of massacres against Christian Armenians during World War One.

Turkey, which was established as a republic after the Ottoman Empire
collapsed, denies those killings were genocide and says both sides
lost lives in internecine fighting during the chaos of war.

Agos Published Photos Of Armenian Cemetery Tombstones Found In Taksi

AGOS PUBLISHED PHOTOS OF ARMENIAN CEMETERY TOMBSTONES FOUND IN TAKSIM SQUARE

15:21, 12 July, 2013

YEREVAN, JULY 12, ARMENPRESS: The electronic version of the Armenian
Agos Periodical, functioning in Istanbul, has published photos of
the Armenian cemetery tombstones found in the Taksim Square during
the construction works. As reported by Armenpress, the tombstones
date to the 17-19cc.

The tombstones are currently at the Istanbul Archeological Museum,
the authorities of which are studying the stones. “The inscription
on one of the tombstones is cleared and unreadable. The other two are
without inscriptions. On five tombstones it is possible to read only
the dates. Eight of the tombstones are with tracery and five of them –
without”, – it was found out at the Museum after the study.

13 tombstones are made of marble. Agos states that after the
clarification of the inscriptions made on the tombstones, they will
be available to the public.

The disorders in Turkey began when on May 28 2013 the plans of
replacing Taksim Gezi Park with a reconstruction of the historic
Taksim Military Barracks (demolished in 1940) with the possibility
of housing a shopping mall became known. The protests developed  into
riots when a group occupying the park was attacked by police.

The subjects of the protests have since broadened beyond
the development  of Taksim Gezi Park, developing into wider
anti-government demonstrations. The protests have also spread
to other cities in Turkey, and protests  have been seen in other
countries with significant Turkish communities. On May 31 2013,
police suppressed the protesters with tear gas, arrested  at least
60 people and injured hundreds.

The police action received wide attention online. 5 men died in
the clashes between the police and the protesters, more than 7,500
people were injured and about 5,000 of people were arrested. By the
data provided by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Turkey, about
2,5 million people from 79 regions took part in the anti-government
demonstrations held in Turkey.

The Turkish authorities were appealed by the White House, the UN
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, the EU foreign policy commissioner
Catherine Ashton, the US Vice President Joe Biden and the President
of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin to settle the issue via
a dialogue.

Armenian-Made Car Displayed At Moscow Auto Show (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

ARMENIAN-MADE CAR DISPLAYED AT MOSCOW AUTO SHOW (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

July 12, 2013 | 01:38

The Autoexotica 2013 international auto show was held in Moscow,
and close to 3,000 cars were displayed at the event.

The auto show visitors displayed a great interest toward the
“Voror”-which means “gull,” in Armenian-named improvised car, which
took part in the event from Armenia.

The vehicle was made by Henrik Matevosyan in 1981, it is in excellent
condition to this day, and it easily traveled from Armenian capital
city Yerevan to Moscow.

“Voror” got its name because of its upward-opening doors which,
when open, make the car resemble a gull.

To note, Matevosyan is constantly improving his automobile, which
already has traveled a total of two million kilometers. “Voror’s”
top speed is 180km/h, and a reason why this car is long-lasting is
because its body is made of plastic glass, which does not corrode.

ARMINFO
Friday, July 12, 11:35

During a closed-door meeting with the representatives of four
parliamentary forces of Armenia – ARF Dashnaktsutyun, Heritage Party,
Armenian National Congress and Prosperous Armenia Party – Stefan
Fule, European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy,
has expressed his concern over the sale of Russian offensive arms
to Azerbaijan.

The parliamentarians who attended the meeting say that Fule raised
this issue in the context of general challenges faced by the republic.

The meeting also covered the issue of Armenia’s upcoming signing
of the EU Association Agreement. Fule assured the participants that
this Agreement does not make Armenia choose between the integration
projects (EU and the Customs Union initiated by Russia – editor’s
note). Moreover, the Commissioner promised that the Association
Agreement will open up new sales markets for Armenia. The meeting
also covered domestic political issues of Armenia.
