“SHANT AND FREEDOM” FUND CALLS ON KAREKIN II TO GIVE PUBLIC ASSESSMENT OF THE ACTIONS REGARDING SHANT HARUTYUNYAN

“Shant and Freedom” Fund has called on the Catholicos of All Armenians
Karekin II and the leaders of religious organizations functioning
in Armenia, to give public assessment of the actions regarding the
leader of the “Tseghakron” party Shant Harutyunyan and his supporters.

The statement says, in particular, that at present there are 15
political prisoners in Armenia, the rights and main freedoms of which
are trampled and their families – wives, parents and 25 teenager
children undergo psychological and other tortures. “Thousands of
citizens put their signatures under the demand to set political
prisoners free, and several international organizations have
come forward to support them. We apply to you and the religious
organizations functioning in Armenia, as a palladium of conscious and
morality. We are waiting for the public expression of your position.

It will become an invaluable support to the political prisoners of
Armenia and their families”, – the statement says.

To recall, the leader of “Tseghakron” Party Shant Harutyunyan,
a maverick opposition activist, and more than 20 of his supporters
were detained after cashes in downtown Yerevan, 5 November 2013.

After several days of sit-in at the Liberty Square, Shant Harutyunyan
decided to organize a march to the presidential palace. Scuffles
ensued as dozens of protesters wearing Guy Fawkes masks on the
backs of their heads threw large firecrackers at policemen, injuring
several. The Police said in a statement they urged Harutyunyn and his
supporters not to disturb the public order and refrain from illegal
behavior. Seeking to break the police cordon, the protesters used
sticks and set off explosives.

The protest was finally dispersed by police. They managed to clear
the Mashtots Avenue and restore the public order. The Police said
they will not tolerate any illegal action and will punish the guilty
with the utmost severity of the law.

Azerbaijan Conducts Lie Propaganda Against US Co-Chair Of OSCE Minsk

AZERBAIJAN CONDUCTS LIE PROPAGANDA AGAINST US CO-CHAIR OF OSCE MINSK GROUP

12:54, 3 March, 2014

YEREVAN, MARCH 3, ARMENPRESS: The efforts of Azerbaijan to distort
the history brought to the fact that the Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign
Minister Araz Azimov made a statement against the OSCE Minsk Group
Co-Chair, Ambassador James Warlick. Armenpress reports, citing the
Azerbaijani APA news agency that Azimov criticized the note made
by the US co-chair in his Twitter concerning the Sumgait massacres,
accusing him of not studying the Karabakh conflict issue properly.

The Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov stated that Warlick
shared his views on the events on Twitter and noted that Twitter is
not the place to discuss such issues. “I cannot respond to Warlick
on Twitter, because the message on Twitter must consist of only 120
letters. Warlick has recently been appointed to this post and should
view the realities of the conflict”, – said Azimov.

The OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chair, Ambassador James Warlick made a note
in his Twitter page on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of the
Armenian massacres organized in the city of Sumgait in Azerbaijan. “We
remember Sumgait too. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan should support
“people to people” projects to establish tolerance and confidence,”
the diplomat noted.

The massacre of the Armenian population in Sumgait, which is located
20 km from Baku, started on February 26, 1988. The Armenians were
attacked and killed both on the streets and in their apartments; the
silence of the Soviet authorities allowed the situation to worsen and
the violence reached its ultimate point on February 28. Those events
were largely supported by the police and government. The massacres
were unprecedented with their cruelty and inhumanity.

Turkish Armenian Actor Returns To Istanbul After Years In London

TURKISH ARMENIAN ACTOR RETURNS TO ISTANBUL AFTER YEARS IN LONDON

14:05 03.03.2014

Kevork Malikyan is a humble and sincere actor. He has an extraordinary
story which started in Diyarbakır and later continued in Istanbul
and London.

Malikyan is now in Turkey. Since his return to Turkey two years ago, he
has been involved in three major film projects, Today’s Zaman reports.

His filmography is fairly extensive and rich and includes movies
in which he worked with famous directors such as Steven Spielberg
and Ridley Scott and with popular actors such as Dustin Hoffman and
Christian Bale.

Malikyan’s story is an unusual one. An archbishop decided to open
a religious seminary in Uskudar, Istanbul, with the intention of
taking in the poor children of Armenian parents from various parts
of Turkey and raising them as priests. Malikyan was questioned by a
priest who wanted to determine whether or not he was a good candidate
for the priesthood. His father told him to go to the seminary because
he couldn’t afford to give him an education due to the financial
problems. He was just 10. Though he was worried because he had no
friends in Istanbul and he had to leave his parents behind, Malikyan
traveled to the city to become a priest.

He was sent to the Karagözyan Orphanage in Å~^iÅ~_li where he spent
two years before attending the religious seminary in Uskudar. In the
seminary, there was a small stage where the students acted in Turkish
and Armenian. When he was 16, an Anglican priest was invited to the
school to teach them English. He was an Oxford graduate who wrote
history books. He was fond of acting and had prepared “Richard III”
by Shakespeare in English wherein Malikyan played Richard. The priest
must have liked Malikyan’s acting because he told the headmaster of
the school that Malikyan should become an actor rather than a priest.

The patriarch asked Malikyan his opinion on this matter but Malikyan
was unsure because of financial concerns. Father Harding, a British
priest, found him a scholarship in Britain.

In London, auditions were arranged in three different schools. The
director at RoseBrufordCollege made Malikyan promise that he would
attend RosaBrufordCollege and not audition at the two other schools.

He agreed but his English was poor. He took English lessons three
days a week, all paid for by the school, which was affiliated with
the University of Kent. Malikyan later received diplomas for acting
and teaching from the school.

Malikyan taught diction courses for a while but later started acting.

He was lucky because he found a job just two days after graduating.

His first play was “Macbeth.” Then he took parts in TV series and
acted in plays where he generally played a foreigner (Italian or
French). But he was unable to obtain lead roles in British plays. Some
15 to 20 years later, he told his manager that he wanted to get parts
in theater and wanted to stay away from TV series. Malikyan signed a
contract with the Royal Shakespeare Company while acting in series by
TV stations, like the BBC. He played different roles and then moved on
to the Royal National Theater. Malikyan also played in Shakespeare’s
theater, the Globe, for three years where he was in renowned plays
such as “King Lear,” “Henry IV” and “Front Line.”

Malikyan met Spielberg and Scott via his manager. His manager had
called and told him that Spielberg had wanted to see him. Spielberg
told Malikyan that even though he did some excellent work, he wanted
to know more about his work, which was known in the US. Malikyan
referred to “Midnight Express,” where he put an American in jail,
a performance which Spielberg remembered. Malikyan later waited for
a few months; during this period, he even rejected offers by the BBC.

Spielberg later called him up and Malikyan got a part in “Indiana
Jones and the Last Crusade.” Malikyan also worked with Scott recently.

His manager sent him a script of the movie and Malikyan made a tape
in İstanbul and sent it back. He got the part and is now in the movie
“Exodus.”

Malikyan decided to move back to his home country because he felt
lonely. In addition, his parents’ graves are in Turkey. Two of his
brothers died in Germany in different cities while his sister is in
France. He thought at least one of them should be in Turkey. His wife
moved to Cyprus and his daughter to Tunisia. This left him alone in
London. He initially thought he would be buried in a British cemetery
when he died but eventually decided to move to Turkey because he
wanted to die there.

Five years ago, he noticed there was going to be a festival at the
Globe with the participation of actors from 38 different countries
who would play 38 Shakespeare plays. He asked the creative director
of the theater if they were inviting Turkey and Armenia. The director
asked Malikyan if there was a theater in these countries. Malikyan
remembered Haluk Bilginer; they had met on the set of a play, “Half
Moon Street,” in the late 1970s. Malikyan later watched their play in
Turkey and Haluk Bilginer asked him to be part of the play. Malikyan
decided to play a brief role and as a result, he moved to Turkey.

He is also teaching at the moment. Bilginer recommended that Malikyan
teach since he has a diploma in teaching. He now teaches at Kadir
Has University once a week on Shakespeare and his contemporaries.

Clashes in Ukraine’s Crimea Police, Protesters Standoff in Kiev

MOSCOW, March 3 (RIA Novosti) – Russia says it has enlisted China’s
support for its claim that the overthrow of the government in Ukraine
last month was orchestrated by “external forces.”

The situation in Ukraine was discussed Monday at consultations in
Moscow between Chinese deputy Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping and his
Russian counterpart, Grigory Karasin.

“The Chinese side expressed understanding of Russia’s analysis of
reasons behind the deep political crisis in Ukraine and the role of
external forces that acted to support Euromaidan,” Russia foreign
ministry said, referring to the informal name of the uprising that
culminated with the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych.

More than 90 people were killed – including dozens of protesters
and more than a dozen policemen – during months of largely peaceful
demonstrations that sporadically tipped over into violence.

Moscow has routinely blamed the United States and the European Union
of lending the protest movement their support, while some lawmakers
have claimed Western governments offered funding and training to
demonstrators.

The Foreign Ministry said China blames Ukraine’s opposition for failing
to comply with an EU-brokered agreement with Yanukovych on February 21
to end the months-long political standoff that had gripped the country.

That deal envisioned elections by the end of the year and reforms to
the constitution. A Russian representative who oversaw the agreement
refrained from signing it.

Opposition forces occupied parliament on February 22, as Yanukovych
fled the capital for destination unknown, until finally surfacing in
southern Russia around a week later.

Yanukovych has described his ouster as a coup and insists he remains
the country’s legitimate head of state.

Café construction suspended in Garni

Café construction suspended in Garni

A group of young people have visited the Garni temple, near which a
café is being constructed.

The construction has been permitted by Armenia’s Ministry of Culture.

In protest at the construction, the young men poured off the sand into
bags and took them to another place.

Priest of heathen cult Varuzh Aghajanyan told Tert.am that no
violation of law was committed and some locals even joined the group.

“The construction has been suspended for five days. Deputy Minister of
Culture Arev Samuelyan visited the Garni temple yesterday and told us
that the construction was suspended for five days,” Priest Varuzh
said.

As to the next step, he said that the group is waiting for a decision.

UAE authorities to extradite Armenian gang of four

Amira Agarib / 2 March 2014

The Dubai Police’s operation room received information of the crime
that took place in a building near the Gold Souq in January.

The UAE legal authorities are in the process of extraditing an
Armenian gang of four who fled the country after killing an Indian
employee of a trading company in Dubai and robbing gold and diamonds
worth millions of dirhams.

The Dubai Police identified the gang within a few hours and alerted
the Armenian authorities, who arrested them and recovered the stolen
valuables after they landed in their home country.

The Dubai Police’s operation room received information of the crime
that took place in a building near the Gold Souq in January. A
24-year-old Indian woman informed the police that her 25-year-old
husband, who had a trade office in a residential area, had not come
back from his workplace and also did not respond to her phone calls
even though he was supposed to return home at 9.30pm.

The police rushed to the man’s office which was located on the second
floor and found the lights switched on. On entering the office the
police saw the man’s body lying on the ground with his hands and legs
tied up and his mouth taped. They also found his face covered in
blood. Primary investigations revealed that the man was beaten before
being killed.

On examining the crime scene the police found the office safe was
busted. The police formed a team and launched an investigation to
solve the mystery death. The owner of the trading company, who was in
India at that time, told the police that some Armenians — who claimed
to be traders — had visited their office to buy gold and diamonds.

The police after finding out that two Armenians A.S and H.M. had left
the country early morning acted promptly by alerting the Armenian
security officials, who arrested them. The Dubai Public Prosecution is
investigating the case to take necessary action.
