There is no 45-year money-investment tool in world – former PM

March 22, 2014 | 15:39

YEREVAN. – There is no 45-year money-investment tool in the world.
Even if we were to fund a satellite flying to Mars, they do not lend
money for more than 20 years.

Armenia’s opposition Freedom Party Chairman, ex-presidential
candidate, former PM, MP Hrant Bagratyan stated the aforementioned
during his address at Saturday’s rally, the Armenian News-NEWS.am
reporter informed.

The rally is held at capital city Yerevan’s Liberty Square, and by the
“Dem Em [I am against]” civic initiative which opposes the new pension
law in Armenia.

“Lending [money] for 45 years is a Guinness record, a foolishness. If
the authorities say there is such a thing in the world, I will
‘cock-a-doodle-doo’ on television; this is not a reform.

“This effort [i.e., the above-said civic initiative] can’t lose; this
is a winning effort. There will be a very piercing victory,” Bagratyan
specifically noted.

Armenian authorities, contact oligarchs for money you want! – Opp MP

Armenian authorities, contact oligarchs for money you want! – opposition MP

March 22, 2014 | 15:03

YEREVAN. – The privileged 20 percent of Armenia’s elite imposes its
will on the 80 percent, that is, on the people.
Opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) MP Nikol Pashinyan noted
the abovementioned during his address at Saturday’s rally.

The rally is held at capital city Yerevan’s Liberty Square, and by the
“Dem Em [I am against]” civic initiative which opposes the new pension
law in Armenia.

Pashinyan recalled that President Serzh Sargsyan had confessed that
although 80 percent of the people in Armenia are unhappy with the
introduction of the mandatory funded pension system in the country,
they will introduce this system.
“The key reason for our problems is hidden herein. Eighty percent of
the Armenian citizens are the bearers of our country’s supreme power;
it is the people of Armenia. In this case, who are those who dare to
declare that they will bring this decision to life?” the opposition MP
asked.

He added that the “Dem Em” movement is not a battle for the sake of
money, but rather for the people’s rights, democracy, and the
Constitution.

“There is no doubt that this movement will triumph,” the ANC deputy added.

“Gentlemen of the [Armenian] authorities, you look for money in the
wrong place because the robbed people have no money. For the money you
want, contact the oligarchs who, according to the international
organization data, have brought $6.2 billion out of Armenia in the
last ten years,” Nikol Pashinyan stated.

5,000-6,000 people gather in Yerevan’s Liberty Square in protest of
compulsory accumulative pension system in Armenia

by Ashot Safaryan

Saturday, March 22, 15:43

Some 5,000-6,000 people have gathered in Yerevan’s Liberty Square
today in protest of compulsory accumulative pension system in Armenia.

ArmInfo’s correspondent reports from the scene that the rally was
opened by an activist from the I Am Against civic initiative, who
welcomed the protesters and said that all parties and NGOs must act
together when it comes to the interests of their people.

Among the protesters are representatives of four opposition
parliamentary parties: Armenian National Congress, ARFD, Prosperous
Armenia and Heritage.
The protesters will shortly start a march along the central streets
and will finally go back to Liberty Square to sum up the results of
the rally and to outline their further plans.

The Government’s decision to impose compulsory accumulative pension
system caused a wave of public protests. In response to an appeal by
Armenian National Congress, ARFD, Prosperous Armenia and Heritage the
Constitutional Court suspended some points of the relevant law. On Mar
28 it will meet again to pass the final verdict.

Ruben Vardanyan: “One of our favorite activities is to speak on why we
won’t make it”

Ruben Vardanyan

Businessman and philanthropist, founder of IDeA Charitable Foundation
Ruben Vardanyan gave a lecture on “Effective Business Models:
Happiness as Super Motive” at Skolkovo Moscow School of Management on
March 20. Mediamax presents excerpts from the lecture and answers to
the questions. The lecture was broadcast live on M24.ru website.

Motivation

I managed to define myself in the way I would like to see me. It’s
also important to learn how to measure your success and to realize
what risks you are ready to take to achieve it.

When we were setting up “Troika Dialog”, our goal was to establish an
investment bank that would impact the situation in the country and
would be recognized by international customers. “Troika Dialog” really
changed Russia. People who came to our company right after their
universities were the ones to build not only the company but also the
entire industry and market.

Formula of success

I would pick out three components:

1. Clearly set goal.
2. Strong team.
3. Consistency.

The impossible possible

My goal is not to earn as much money as possible but to make the
impossible possible. I remember our vigorous arguments with the
[Russian] Minister of Economic Development German Gref who did not
believe Russian businessmen would be willing to donate funds to
establish SKOLKOVO School.

You should strongly believe in the project. I was once invited to a
private dinner at which Founding Father of Modern Singapore Lee Kuan
Yew was also present. I told him about the Skolkovo idea and he told
me: “I like your dream and I would like to contribute to its
implementation”. He used to arrive here every year and my dream was
coming true right before his eyes.

Lee Kuan Yew promised to go to Armenia with me after SKOLKOVO School
construction is completed, and he kept his word. Once I asked him why
he eventually decided to support SKOLKOVO project. Lee Kuan Yew is a
very pragmatic person and he said that 20 years down the road
Singapore will start ceding to Dubai and Shanghai and to remain
competitive Singapore considers all countries, which are located on 7
hour flight distance at most. In this sense, we will benefit if the
coming generations of Russian businessmen who will study at SKOLKOVO
School know about Singapore.

Trust

One of our favorite activities is to speak about why we won’t make it.
One of the main reasons for it is the lack of trust. Count the number
of people and institutions you trust. You will most likely count 10
people and 3 institutions or organizations, at best.

Every promising idea pulls like a magnet if you are ready to share it.
Involvement of other people is highly important for me.

People

Many a time I have been saying that people are the main asset of the
21st century. Every undertaking can fail or become a success but it
all depends on people. There are various models – a team of “stars”
can be set up or you can “cultivate” the team yourself. What matters
for me is that the person in the team cares for the project.

You should not be afraid to involve strong people. Many people
enrolled in “Troika Dialog” were much more talented and experienced
than I was.

It hurt and it was also very hard for me to dismiss people who were
not making a mistake and neither doing anything bad. But I had to do
it as they were not ready for big changes.

Mistakes and flaws

I have been making mistakes time and again in my life, and I still
make them. Which is the mistake I regularly make? Each time I decide
to deviate from my principles and look for reasons to make concessions
or exceptions I “get struck on the head”. I don’t fire the person who
should have been fired as early as yesterday. I agree to go to a
meeting which I shouldn’t have gone.

My main flaw is that I am trying to grasp the immensity. And as a
result, I spent the last four nights in the plane.

Honesty

People are weak and it is highly important to be loyal and to always
tell the truth without resorting to manipulations and double
standards.

Learning

In my case, it’s life-long learning. I am lucky to have had many smart mentors.

Family and work

I have four children and my wife greatly helps me with the realization
of important projects. My family, apparently, “suffers” and it’s very
hard. Unfortunately, there is no balance between the work and the
family.

l’offre.

Haig Boyadjian Bequeaths $750,000 To Armenian EyeCare Project

HAIG BOYADJIAN BEQUEATHS $750,000 TO ARMENIAN EYECARE PROJECT

Thursday, March 20th, 2014

Haig John Boyadjian

First Regional Eye Clinic Named in His Honor

IJEVAN, Armenia–Always believing in the vital importance of vision
and eye care, Haig John Boyadjian bequeathed $750,000 to the Armenian
EyeCare Project. A long-time resident of New Jersey, Haig was born
in Jerusalem, the Mandate of Palestine, on February 13, 1935, to
Haroutune and Mary Boyadjian.

Haig graduated from Saint George’s School in 1953, and from Swarthmore
College in Pennsylvania in 1957, with a Bachelor of Arts. Following
Swarthmore he studied at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy
at Tufts University and earned his Master of Arts in International
Relations. After completing his education Haig became eligible for
the military draft and served in Army Intelligence at Fort Bragg,
Georgia, from 1959 through 1961. He remained in the Army Reserves
for a number of years following his active service.

Pursuing his keen, lifelong interest in international relations,
Haig joined Chase Manhattan Bank’s Executive Training Program. He
was fascinated with foreign countries and their people and the Chase
program enabled him to become immersed in a number of different
cultures throughout his career. He lived and worked in many countries
in Europe, South and Central America, the Caribbean and the Middle
East. His last assignment was with Midland Bank’s (HSBC) London
office. Among his many accomplishments Haig co-authored “Risks Reading
Corporate Signals,” a book on the banking industry.

To celebrate Haig’s life, the Armenian EyeCare Project will name its
first Regional Eye Clinic, which will be located in Ijevan, Tavush,
in his honor — The Haig John Boyadjian AECP Eye Clinic. To bring
accessible, quality eye care to the people of Armenia, the EyeCare
Project is building five Regional Eye Clinics throughout Armenia. In
addition to Tavush, they will be located in Gyumri in Shirak, Vanadzor
in Lori, Kapan in Syunik and Yeghegnadzor in Vayots Dzor. The locations
of these Eye Clinics will enable rural Armenians to have access to
quality eye care and surgery within a reasonable distance.

They will no longer have to travel to Yerevan for most eye care or
for cataract surgery, which most can’t afford or have to wait for
two years for the Mobile Eye Hospital to visit their town.

The Armenian Eye Care Project’s vision for Armenia is a country where
no individual is without access to quality eye care; where Armenian
ophthalmologists are trained to diagnose and treat eye disease at the
highest level following United States standards and practices; and
preventable causes of blindness are eliminated through an emphasis
on prevention and early intervention. To realize this vision eye
care must be accessible and affordable for all Armenians. However,
eye care in Armenia today continues to be extremely limited outside
of Yerevan and disproportionately affects the poor and those living
in remote regions. Just four towns outside of the capital city of
Yerevan provide basic eye care and most surgery is available only in
the capital. Further, a lack of equipment and professionally trained
ophthalmologists and ancillary eye care professionals in the regions
severely restricts access to eye care.

While the EyeCare Project has provided eye care for hundreds of
thousands on the Mobile Eye Hospital (MEH) over the past 11 years at
no cost including comprehensive high quality eye examinations, basic
eye care and eyeglasses for all Armenians and surgery –13,000 cases —
for the poorest Armenians, this type of care has serious limitations.

Because the MEH visits the outlying cities and villages only once
every two years there is no treatment for emergencies and eye trauma.

Additionally, eye disorders and diseases that require frequent care
and observation can worsen between visits making them more difficult
to treat, e.g., glaucoma and macular degeneration. In the case of
children there is only a small window of time to treat eye disease
and their sight can become permanently damaged. And, those who are
not “poor” receive no surgical care. Even though residents are not
designated as poor by government standards, most of those living in the
regions do not have the money to pay for surgery and advanced care in
Yerevan. They are often unable to travel the distance because of cost
or other reasons and go without care, leaving many visually disabled.

The AECP Regional Eye Clinics — the first one scheduled for opening
this year in Ijevan in Tavush –The Haig John Boyadjian AECP Eye
Clinic –will be built over a period of five years. To fund these
clinics the EyeCare Project has embarked upon its largest capital fund
development campaign, ever. Over the next year the Project will reach
out to its friends and donors and Armenian Family Foundations to raise
$5 Million. Naming opportunities are available for major donors and
all donors will be listed on a donor wall in each Regional Eye Clinic.

For more information about the Armenian EyeCare Project, contact
the California office at 949-933-4069, or visit the AECP website at
To make a donation, call the AECP or mail a
check to P.O. Box 5630, Newport Beach, California 92662.

Azerbaijani Analyst: Fear Of Russia In Baku Amid Ukraine Events

AZERBAIJANI ANALYST: FEAR OF RUSSIA IN BAKU AMID UKRAINE EVENTS

March 20, 2014 | 17:50

In Azerbaijan they are drawing parallels between Ukrainian events
and Nagorno-Karabakh, said Azerbainani analyst Arif Yunusov.

Yunusov, representative of Azerbaijan-based Migration Department of
the Institute for Peace and Democracy, participated in the “NATO and
South Caucasus: Strategic Approach to Regional Security” conference
organized by Yerevan-bsaed strategic analysis center.

Speaking about Azerbaijan’s attitude toward Ukrainian events, he said
there is fear of Russia in the country.

“If once they said about the possible accession to the Customs Union,
today the topic faded away,” he said.

Moreover, he added, the Ukrainian crisis provoked a fear of revolution
in Azerbaijan.

“Credibility in the West has reduced, the society is skeptical about
democratic values. Azerbaijani authorities have launched campaign
against pro-Western forces,” Yunusof said.

He noted that the leadership of Azerbaijan demands from Europe and the
United States to choose between energy exports and democratic values,
that are permanently violated.

In these circumstances, the revival of the Islamic factor, the analyst
beleievs, is quite natural.

CRIMEA REFERENDUM IS RIGHT TO SELF-DETERMINATION IN ACTION – STEPANAKERT

Interfax, Russia
March 18 2014

YEREVAN. March 17

The foreign ministry of the self-proclaimed Nagorno Karabakh Republic
sees the Crimean referendum as “a fresh example of the nations’
right to self determination in action.”

“The nations’ right to decide their future in a democratic referendum,
sealed in the UN Charter and other fundamental international laws,
is a key principle of international law,” the Foreign Ministry said
in statement received by Interfax.

“The practice of the past few years, including the referendums being
planned in Catalonia and Scotland, indicate that recognition and
implementation of the nations’ right to self-determination is the most
optimal and democratic way of peaceful settlement of such problems,”
the statement says.

The foreign ministry of Nagorno Karabakh hopes that the situation
that took shape in the Crimea after the referendum will be settled
legally and exclusively by peaceful means, the statement says.
