BAKU: Armenians’ Future Looks Bleak

ARMENIANS’ FUTURE LOOKS BLEAK

By Jamila Babayeva

The Armenian government has confirmed that the minimum wage in the
country is at the poverty level.

“The government plans to increase the minimum wage, which is at the
poverty level, to 125 percent of the poverty ratio,” Armenian Minister
of Labor and Social Affairs Artem Asatryan said at a parliamentary
session on March 26.

The minimum wage is 50,000 drams ($121) in the country, while the
minimum consumer basket was set at 56,200 drams ($135) per month at
the end of 2013.

While the government is making plans, the situation has became so
complicated that the population is forced even to buy bread on credit.

Some 22 families of the Okhtar village in the Syunik province have
struck up an agreement with some bakers to get daily bread and pay
for it at the end of each month. An older resident of the village
said families are seriously suffering from social problems.

“The village school, where the schoolchildren of five villages study,
will be closed down soon due to a decrease in the number of students.

The total number of schoolchildren is 25-27 now,” he said. “There are
no young people and families in the village. The last child was born
in the village 10 years ago.”

The Armenians’ dire needs have caused some citizens to take even
extreme measures. A middle-aged man who was holding a knife entered
the territory of the Parliament and threatened to kill himself if he
could not meet the president on March 26. He said he wanted to draw
the attention of officials to his family’s poverty.

“I have applied a thousand times and demanded money for bread, but
no one has responded to my letters,” he said.

The Armenian media noted that this incident is not the first such
happening at the Parliament’s territory.

The parliament has found out how to protect itself against dissatisfied
citizens. Some 150 surveillance cameras will be installed at the
parliamentary building soon. The cameras will even be installed on
the trees at the Parliament’s garden.

The forecasts are still not optimistic for Armenia. The price of
imported gas from Russia will probably face an increase from June 1,
as the price will up four percent in Russia.

The Armenian government increased gas and electricity prices for
consumers in July 2013, a decision that led to the closure of several
small and medium enterprises.

Due to the increased tariffs, several greenhouses and bread production
facilities and 30 percent of fish farmers have stopped working.

So, the second wave of price increase in Armenia will inevitably have a
negative impact on the economy which is in deadlock situation even now.

Christian Armenians Under Attack In Syria Because Of Turkey: Crimea,

CHRISTIAN ARMENIANS UNDER ATTACK IN SYRIA BECAUSE OF TURKEY: CRIMEA, CYPRUS, SYRIA AND NATO

Armenian Christians are once more fleeing from the aggression of Turkey
and not surprisingly the Western nations sprouting international law
at the Russian Federation are deadly silent. Indeed, NATO Turkey is
allowed to occupy Northern Cyprus, cleanse Orthodox Christianity and to
create Turkish settlements based on their conquest; to enter Northern
Iraq in order to attack the Kurds when it pleases the elites in Ankara;
and NATO Turkey is allowed to be a base for international jihadists
and a zone for supplying military arms to terrorists, sectarians, and
mercenaries, that fight against the Syrian government. Therefore, the
recent involvement by Turkey in the cleansing of Armenian Christians
in Northern Syria appears to be one long continuation of past misdeeds.

Gulf, Western and NATO double standards

Once more, NATO powers and the so-called free world are mainly silent
about the cleansing of Armenian Christians on the behest of the
Erdogan government in Turkey. Of course, when the Russian Federation
takes action in Crimea this is followed by Western rhetoric based on
democracy, human rights, international law, and so forth. However, the
useful manipulation of language becomes open for all to see because
the President of America will visit Saudi Arabia despite this nation
being the most draconian country in the world. Similarly, France is
crying wolf about the situation in Crimea while signing major trading
deals with China – in other words, the Buddhist Tibetans are expendable
and the rule of law is just a tool to be manipulated by major powers.

It is this double-standard, indeed, no standards laid down by major
NATO and Gulf powers, that is extremely irksome when applied to the
Russian Federation and any independent nation state like Syria. The
vast majority of individuals know the basics about the Phoenix
program and massacres in Vietnam; the role of America in supporting
right-wing death squads throughout South America; the open lie about
weapons of mass destruction and Iraq; the deliberate NATO bombing of
the infrastructure of Serbia, whereby mainly civilians were killed;
the destabilization of Libya and the current reality of this nation
now being a failed state; and endless other ventures based on breaking
and ignoring international law – alongside cutting up nations like
Serbia via handing over Kosovo to Albanian nationalists. All the
above renders the rhetoric of “international law” by America and it
allies over the current crisis in Crimea to be not only ridiculous,
but also blatant anti-Russian Federation propaganda.

Syria highlights the complete bankruptcy of major Gulf and NATO powers
because the same nations are utilizing terrorism and sectarianism
in order to destabilize secular Syria. This reality means that the
minority Christian community in this nation is faced with dhimmitude,
having their churches destroyed, being forced to pay jizya, forcibly
converted based on fear and being cleansed by forces being supported
by Gulf and NATO powers. It must be remembered that over 50 per cent of
Christians fled Iraq on the watch of America and the United Kingdom. Of
course, this isn’t unique because Orthodox Christians were forced to
flee in Northern Cyprus and likewise the same religious community in
Kosovo must stay in the shadows or face persecution.

Untold numbers of Christian churches and monasteries have been
destroyed in Northern Cyprus and Kosovo based on the policies of
Western and Gulf powers – and, of course, based on the invasion,
occupation and settlements of Turks by Turkey when applied to Northern
Cyprus. Where was the international community, and the mantra of
“international law,” when this happened?

On the contrary, when Christians were been cleansed and massacred
during the Biafran War in Nigeria, East Timor, Northern Cyprus,
Kosovo, West Papua – and other conflicts – major Western powers merely
sold more military arms to the persecutors of Christians. This isn’t
unique to the Christian community because Hindus have been cleansed
and massacred in Bangladesh and Pakistan but this was similarly met
by silence because of Western geopolitical ambitions.

Therefore, while G-7 nations are lambasting the Russian Federation
over the Crimea crisis it is worth remembering the daily deaths in
Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria based on the meddling of Gulf
and NATO powers (Pakistan also involved in Afghanistan). Yes, the
nations sprouting international law have already turned off their
individual collective consciousness to daily terrorist attacks in
the above-mentioned nations. Indeed, while vast numbers continue to
be killed based on Gulf and Western meddling this will not stop the
same nations from intervening and destabilizing another part of the
world in the near future. After all, history tells us that from little
Grenada, to the ongoing destabilization of Syria, – that no nation
is immune if independent and clearly Venezuela should be worried.

Armenians cleansed in Syria on the behest of NATO Turkey

In history the genocide of 1915 should never be forgotten but for
nearly one hundred years leading powers have mainly caved in to the
whims of Turkey. Therefore, the genocide of Armenians, Assyrians and
Greeks is still blatantly denied by elites in Turkey and of course
leading powers hate to lose business. In other words, the slaughter
of Christians isn’t so bad because more important is to appease Ankara.

Of course, unlike the alleged genocide in Kosovo whereby the Serbians
became an even bigger minority – the “real genocide” in Turkey of
several Christian communities led to the utter demise of Christianity
throughout most of modern day Turkey. Indeed, while Western liberals
laud Turkey for being a progressive modern Muslim nation the same
elites fail to state how the nearly 100 per cent former Christian
area turned into being less than 0.5% Christian based on systematic
persecution, enslavement, dhimmitude, brutal massacres and religious
cleansing over many centuries. Of course, history is never a strong
point for Western elites but just in case “open manipulation” is
installed in order to brainwash the masses.

Now, nearly 100 years later, the same Turkey is involved in cleansing
Armenian Christians in Northern Syria. Yes, while Western nations are
lambasting the Russian Federation over Crimea – NATO Turkey continues
to illegally occupy and settle Northern Cyprus, while involving itself
in the cleansing of Armenian Christians in Northern Syria and taking
a hostile approach towards the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh. Turkey
is a major bane in the side of the Syrian government because this
NATO country is an open conduit for international terrorists and
supplying military arms to al-Qaeda affiliates and an array of
sectarian forces in Syria. In the past, NATO powers did at least
try to hide their connivance with al-Qaeda affiliates and sectarian
forces when the time suited, for example Afghanistan in the 1980s and
early 1990s and more recently in Libya whereby both forces worked on
the same side in order to topple the government of Gaddafi. However,
Turkey is going one step further because you have many al-Qaeda and
other terrorist bases and areas of weapon collections in this nation
along the vast border with Syria.

In recent days Turkey is involving itself in the cleansing of Christian
Armenians in Kasab (Kessab). This is a continuation of the Erdogan
government in Turkey because since outside nations began to meddle in
Syria the elites of Ankara have assisted various different terrorist,
sectarian and mercenary groups. Untold numbers have died in Syria
because of the actions of Turkey alongside the brutal deeds of major
Gulf and NATO powers.

The Syrian Arab News Agency reports: “The ministry said in the two
identical letters of which SANA received a copy that the Syrian
government has drawn the attention of the UN Secretary-General and
chairmen of the UN Security Council during the past three years to
the acts and violations committed by the Turkish government against
Syria’s security and stability through the Turkish involvement in
organizing, receiving, funding and hosting tens of thousands of
terrorists from various takfiri movements and facilitating their
entry into the Syrian territories and giving them background bases
on the Turkish territories.”

Ken Hachikian, chairman of the Armenian National Committee of America
(ANCA), says: “The attacks on the predominantly Armenian-populated
village of Kessab over the weekend represent an attack on all
Armenians.”

“The Armenian-American community stands united in seeking to reverse
the events of the last several days, which has seen militant extremists
stream into Kessab from Turkey. We are strongly urging our government,
led by President [Barack] Obama and congressional leaders, to send
a firm message to Ankara that the safe haven and safe passage being
offered to these militant groups intent on destroying Kessab must end.”

In other words, while G-7 nations are rebuking the Russian Federation
over Crimea, the same nations are mainly silent about the deeds
of Turkey in assisting terrorist and sectarian forces, along with
involving itself directly in Northern Syria. Sadly, for Christian
Armenians in Kasab (Kessab) this is a stern reminder of the past when
vast numbers were killed and cleansed by Turks.

Syrian Arab News Agency reports: “Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan
expressed deep concern over the Turkish attack on Kasab area in
Lattakia where a large number of Armenians dwell.”

“Armenian President thanked Syrian authorities for protecting Armenians
in Kasab who were forced to leave their homeland twice in the past
and are facing a third attempt due to the attacks of Turkish military
legions.”

“…Serzh Sargsyan recalled that the Turkish legions have forced
Armenians twice to leave Kasab; the first in 1909 and the second
in 1915.”

The worry now is that with Erdogan being beset by countless corruption
scandals, and with G-7 nations focusing on Crimea, that the current
leader of Turkey may utilize nationalism and instigating more
bloodshed in Syria for personal political gains. Not surprisingly,
the recent attacks against Syria by Israel and Turkey appear to be
coordinated because both these nations are protecting terrorists in
border areas. Syria, of course, should be protected by international
law but obviously for three years the nations of Qatar, Saudi Arabia,
Turkey, and others in the Gulf, have all been involved in supporting
terrorism and sectarianism against the government based in Damascus.

Likewise, America, the United Kingdom and France have equally involved
themselves with many Islamist and terrorist ratlines despite the
overwhelming majority of the electorate in all three nations being
against their policies – so much for democracy.

Armenians in Kasab are once more being endangered by Turkey and
just like the Armenian, Greek and Assyrian genocide of 1915 – and
the ensuing massacres that followed in the proceeding years until
the middle of the 1920s; it is clear that elites in Ankara believe
they are above international law. This isn’t so surprising given the
carte blanche takeover of Northern Cyprus whereby the eradication of
indigenous Orthodox Christianity was tolerated by Western powers.

After all, Western nations selling military arms to Turkey, while
claiming outwardly to be opposed to the illegal occupation of Northern
Cyprus, is clearly “a fudge” of mega distortions. Therefore, with
Turkey literally getting away with destroying thousands of Kurdish
villages over the last few decades; illegally occupying Northern
Cyprus; violating the sovereignty of Iraq by military incursions
from time to time; enabling terrorists and sectarian forces to
utilize border areas in order to destabilize Syria; then the Armenian
communities throughout the world should expect empty words – or silence
– about the ongoing deeds of Turkey in relation to the persecution
of Armenian Christians in Kasab and other parts of Syria.

Meanwhile, for Syria the same Gulf and NATO powers continue to
destabilize the nation state despite the enormous loss of life. This
means that a whole array of various sectarian, terrorist and mercenary
forces are being financed based on Gulf petrodollars, the connivance
of Turkey and the intrigues of America, France and the United Kingdom.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and other Gulf powers, have been given a free
hand to support al-Qaeda backed affiliates and various brutal Takfiri
groups. At the same time, Gulf petrodollars are spreading radical
Salafism in Syria and supporting wanton destruction. Therefore,
the Armenians in Kasab – just like the entire mosaic in Syria – are
being forced to flee to areas under the control of the Syrian armed
forces in order to be protected from barbaric sectarian, terrorist
and Takfiri forces that are supported by Gulf and NATO powers.

Ukraine Sends Ambassador Back To Armenia

UKRAINE SENDS AMBASSADOR BACK TO ARMENIA

Vestnik Kavkaza, Russia

27 March 2014 – 2:07pm

Ukraine was not planning to break diplomatic relations with Armenia
and will send an ambassador to it next week, said Igor Roman, an
advisor t the Ukrainian embassy in Armenia, News Armenia reports.

Ukrainian Ambassador Ivan Kukhtu was called off back to Kiev on
March 21 for consultations. Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Shavarsh
Kocharyan met the ambassador the same day and said that recognition of
the right for self-identification by Armenia will not be reconsidered
and had been backed by the country for many years.

Kasab Crossing … Illusion Of Victory, Liberation

KASAB CROSSING … ILLUSION OF VICTORY, LIBERATION

Ibrahim Aabdollah

After the consecutive victories of the resistance’s axis in the
region, the elements of the international plot against Syria have
decided to move the battlefield from its southern to its northern
borders in order to secure ‘Israel’ and to involve Turkey.

The clashes in Kasab will not lead to a strategic victory for
the militant groups as the city of Kasab itself is not strategic,
political researcher Taleb Ibrahim told Al-Manar website.

Ibrahim added that the militant groups in Syria are trying to attain
a moral victory after the consecutive defeats that they have suffered
recently.

Strategic expert Dr. Hasan Hasan told Al-Manar website that the media
circulation of the “South’s Battle” aimed at drawing the attentions
away from the plan of Kasab’s battle.

The Turkish PM Recep Tayyeb Erdogan is clashing with the president
Abdollah Gul and other Turkish factions, including the secularists
and the army that started to regain a political influence in the
light of releasing General Alger Bashkorg who was accused of a case
of inversion.

Erdogan considers that he would be the scapegoat of the Syrian crisis
as he encounters internal political defeats.

Scandals of corruption have deteriorated Erdogan’s political position
before the municipal elections. As a result, he wanted to involve the
Turkish army in a direct clash with the Syrian army in an attempt
to set an emergency case in his country so that he could cancel
the elections.

‘Israel’ is completely convinced that any insane aggression against
Syria will be fiercely encountered by the axis of resistance, Turkey is
trying to play the Israeli role by inflaming Latakia’s Front instead
of the Southern one.

Ibrahim considered that the Russian military existence at the
Mediterranean will prevent Turkey from attaining any victory in Kasab.

Dr. Hasan also considered that Turkey is in complete coordination with
‘Israel’ in this step as launching this attack is considered as one
of the last plots that international war against Syria can set.

The conflict between Russia and the NATO has intensified, especially
in Crimea and Syria. Thus, the relation between the two files is
direct and clear.

The NATO aggression in Kasab comes in the context of the American
response to the Russian persistence on approving Crimea annexation.

Moscow considers that Syrian resistance in facing the international
plot has founded new international balances which along with the
Russian military deployment at the Syrian coast enhanced the recurrence
of Russia’s strategic role in the world.

In a different context, Ibrahim pointed out that the city of Yabroud in
Qalamoun used to be a main Mossad stronghold before it was liberated
by the Syrian army and that Erdogan’s direct intervention in the
Syrian war reflects his desire to fight in the behalf of the Israelis.

Dr. Hasan Hasan also noted that the Israelis utilized the strategic
position of Yabroud to be a the separation wall between the elements
of the resistance’s axis from Iran to Palestine.

He added that Yabroud’s liberation will enhance that of the entire
Qalamoun and the Golan Heights.

ARRESTED KARABAKH WAR VETERAN CLAIMS HE WAS OFFERED BRIBES TO STAY QUIET

03.27.2014 12:10 epress.am

Reserve Colonel, Karabakh War veteran Volodya Avetisyan, one of the
organizers of the struggle for the rights of war veterans, in May 2013
was promised a business in exchange for ending the veterans’ struggle.

Avetisyan said this himself on March 26 in the Court of First Instance
of Arabkir and Kanaker-Zeytun Administrative Districts of Yerevan
presided over by Judge Levon Avetisyan.

Accused of taking bribes and in pre-trial detention since September
20, Avetisyan doesn’t admit to the charges; moreover, he claims that
the charges against him are a result of political persecution.

The war veteran said that in May last year, when the sit-in demanding
a better socioeconomic situation for Karabakh War veterans began,
people from the wing of the ruling elite approached him and urged him
to abandon the idea of a sit-in. Instead, they promised him money and
a business, in both the capital and Etchmiadzin, as well as promising
to reinstate him in the system. Avetisyan says he refused the offer.

He said that he rejected the investigator’s offer to be released on
the condition that he gives up the fight.

“I don’t sell my soul and my homeland,” he said, which was followed
by applause and shouts of “Volodya! Volodya!” in the courtroom.

Judge Avetisyan called for quiet in court; otherwise, he’ll be forced
to hold the trial behind closed doors.

At the start of the trial, Avetisyan’s attorney, Ara Zakaryan, filed
two motions with the judge — to recuse himself and to release his
client due to lack of reasons to keep him in detention. Both motions
were rejected.

After this decision, the accused refused to answer the judge’s
questions, while Zakaryan appealed to the judge to postpone the trial
and to provide him with the recordings of the court hearing. Returning
to the courtroom from the consultation room, the judge granted the
motion, postponing the court date to April 2 at 2 pm.

MINISTER SAYS HE REACTED “ABRUPTLY”, DID NOT MEAN TO INSULT ENVIRONMENTAL ACTIVIST

Armenian Minister of Nature Protection Aram Harutyunyan says he was
provoked into overreacting in a recent altercation with environmental
activists participating in a protest action.

During the opening of a two-day international conference on mining
issues in Yerevan on Tuesday, a group of activists “invaded” the
hall where it was taking place, interrupting the event. Raising
environmental issues connected with the mining sector, the activists
offered to government ministers a glass of water that they said was
from one of polluted rivers of Armenia.

The ministers, including Harutyunyan, refused to drink it, getting
into an argument with the activists. At one point, addressing one of
the young men participating in the protest, the minister of nature
protection said: “Know your limits, boy, or I will tear off your ears
and put them in your hand”.

The comment was taken as an offense and, furthermore, some activists
later said it could also be viewed as a threat of physical violence.

Commenting on the situation at a news briefing at the National Assembly
on Wednesday, Harutyunyan insisted that he was doing everything for
a normal discussion amid “personal insults, shouts and unreasonable
accusations” from activists.

He said he did not intend to insult the activist. “There was no
planned, deliberate word. I had to react so abruptly,” Harutyunyan
said when asked if he was going to offer an apology.

It was not immediately clear whether the activist is going to sue
the minister or take the matter to a recently established ethics
committee dealing with cases of senior government officials.

Armenian Government Presents National Scout Movement With A Forest

ARMENIAN GOVERNMENT PRESENTS NATIONAL SCOUT MOVEMENT WITH A FOREST

03.27.2014 19:25 epress.am

The Government of the Republic of Armenia today decided to provide the
right to use 3 hectares of forest land within Yerevan’s administrative
district indefinitely to the National Scout Movement of Armenia. The
National Scout Movement of Armenia is a voluntary children and youth,
extracurricular, apolitical and non-military organization “which aims
to educate a responsible, conscious, socially active and spiritually
strong, patriotic generation.”

In recent years, the organization has been provided with a plot of
land to build a rest house and playground, where the organization
has carried out construction work and created the opportunity to hold
events for up to 600 people.

“We have to express our satisfaction to this organization for the
work its done in the past,” said RA Prime Minister Tigran Sargysan,
according to the government’s website. “Studying their experience,
visiting those camps, we see that they do very patriotic work, so we
are confident that this is the right decision.”

The government is confident that with the new plot of land the
organization will be more effective in organizing its activities.

Government Reaffirms Extension Of Service Life Of Armenian Nuclear P

GOVERNMENT REAFFIRMS EXTENSION OF SERVICE LIFE OF ARMENIAN NUCLEAR POWER PLANT BY 10 YEARS

YEREVAN, March 27. / ARKA /. Armenian energy and natural resources
minister Armen Movsisyan has denied today media reports alleging
that the government had given up plans to build a new nuclear power
plant to replace the aging Metsamor facility, but acknowledged that
the construction of the new plant is being delayed because ‘of the
global economic crisis and some geopolitical developments” which did
not allow the government to secure sufficient funding for the project.

In 2012 the Armenian government decided to extend the service life
of the nuclear power plant in Metsamor by another ten years. Today
the government has reaffirmed that decision.

The minister said today that all this in mind the government is
going to step up all its efforts to improve the safety of the nuclear
facility. At the same time, according to the minister, the government
will intensify the work for construction of a new unit.

The government has instructed today the ministry of finance to take
all steps necessary for the signing of an intergovernmental loan
agreement with Russia to raise funds to finance the project

The Metsamor plant located some 30 kilometers west of Yerevan, was
built in the 1970s but was closed following a devastating earthquake
in 1988 that killed some 25,000 people and devastated much of northern
Armenia.

One of the plant’s two VVER 440-V230 light-water reactors was
reactivated in 1995.

Armenian authorities say the new plant is supposed to operate at twice
the capacity of the Soviet-constructed facility. Metsamor currently
generates some 40 percent of Armenia’s electricity. But the government
has yet to attract funding for the project that was estimated as much
as $5 billion.

After September 3 talks with Armenian president Serhz Sargsyan
Russian president Vladimir Putin said experts from Russian state
nuclear company Rosatom and Armenian experts agreed to extend the
service life of the Armenian nuclear power plant until 2026.

In February 2013 Armen Movsisyan said the new nuclear power unit is
planned to be built in 2019-2020. -0-

PERSPECTIVE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY CALLS FOR CREATION OF 60,000 NEW JOBS IN ARMENIA BY 2017

YEREVAN, March 27. / ARKA /. A perspective development strategy,
approved today by Armenian government, calls for creation of 60,000
new jobs by 2017 and reducing poverty level to 13% by 2025, economy
minister Vahram Avanesyan told reporters after a Cabinet session.

He said the strategy has three main objectives, but the first and most
important of them is to boost employment by creating high-paying jobs.

He said the second main objective is poverty reduction through
effective social policies and improved collection of government
revenue.

The third objective is correct calculation of economic and sectoral
indicators which should serve as a basis for calculating medium-term
costs and budget drafting.

“We will work to improve the overall economic environment and implement
policies in selected industries. We have already approved plans of
actions for 7-8 sectors industries, “he said.

According to him, a plan of actions has been approved also for high
technologies. The government works also to prepare a plan of actions
to boost construction industry and improve the business and investment
environments.

“We hope that all this will result in a growth rate above 4-4.5 %”
he said.

According to official data, the current poverty level in the country
is over 32 percent. -0-
