Likely title shot for Darchinyan

By Dan Rafael | ESPN.com

Former two-division titleholder Vic Darchinyan, who gave Nonito
Donaire fits before being stopped in his last fight, performed well
enough in defeat that it probably will land him a shot at a
featherweight title.

Darchinyan likely will challenge 126-pound titlist Nicholas Walters on
May 31 at the CotaiArena at Venetian Macao in Macau, China, on the
undercard of Donaire’s shot at a different version of the title in the
main event against Simpiwe Vetyeka.

Walters (23-0, 19 KOs), 28, of Jamaica, was originally slated to make
his second title defense against Alejandro Perez, but Perez took a
tune-up bout against journeyman Juan Carlos Martinez and lost a split
decision in disappointing performance last week.

That opened the door for the 38-year-old Darchinyan (39-6-1, 28 KOs),
who held titles at flyweight and unified belts junior bantamweight, to
get the offer for the fight.

Asked if they were going to make a deal, Frank Espinoza, Darchinyan’s
manager, told ESPN.com, “Yes, it looks that way. This is a great
opportunity for Vic to show the world that he still has what it take
to be a world champion. Vic is hungry and ready for war. In China, a
new champion will be crowned and Vic will make history.”

Donaire and Darchinyan both were making their featherweight debuts
when they met in a rematch of Donaire’s knockout victory to win a
flyweight title in 2007. In the November rematch, Darchinyan was ahead
on two scorecards and even on the third as they headed for the ninth
round of a fight in which Darchinyan fractured Donaire’s orbit bone.
But Donaire rallied and stopped the Armenian-born Darchinyan in the
ninth round.

“Darchinyan clearly showed that he is far from done with his
performance against Donaire,” Top Rank vice president Carl Moretti
told ESPN.com. “He was ahead on two of the three scorecards, he has a
great name, he’s been a great champion. It’s an interesting fight, and
it’s a good test for Walters. Vic would be the best opponents Walters
has faced. Walters is not as experienced as Darchinyan, but he’s
younger and strong.”

Armenian expert in Turkish affairs accuses West of inaction over Kes

Armenian expert in Turkish affairs accuses West of inaction over
Kessab Armenians

YEREVAN, April 3. / ARKA /. An Armenian expert in Turkish affairs has
condemned today Western powers for their failure to respond adequately
to massive violation of rights of ethnic Armenian population of
Kessab, a small town in northwestern Syria bordering Turkey, saying
their passive stance is reminiscent of the 1915 genocide of Armenians
committed by the government of the Ottoman Turkey.

Speaking at a news conference, Ruben Melkonyan, deputy dean of
Oriental Studies department at Yerevan State University, said it is
obvious that the Armenian community of Kessab is set to disappear.

“The fact is that the homes of Armenians were looted, the population
was made to flee. These are the crimes that make a genocide,” said
Mekonyan.

Kessab, which is home to over 2,000 ethnic Armenians is located in
Syria’s Latakia province, just miles away from Turkey. On March 21,
extremist groups affiliated with al-Qaeda crossed into Syria from
Turkey with the blessing of its authorities and seized the town after
clashes with Syrian government troops.

According to Melkonyan , the Armenian community of Kessab will hardly revive.

“Armenia is deeply concerned over the recent events in ancient town of
Kessab and 12 villages with prevailing Armenian population. All
evidence available and location of the town lead to a conclusion the
recent attacks were made by terrorist groups linked to al-Qaeda that
crossed the border from the territory of Turkey,” Armenian foreign
minister Edward Nalbandian says in a letter sent to UN secretary
general Ban Ki-Moon.

‘The extremist groups desecrated Armenian churches of Kessab and
caused damage to property of local population having left a dismal
picture of egregious human rights violations. Only a couple of aged
people remained being unable to leave the town. These tragic events
jeopardize implementation of UN Security Council resolutions 2139 and
2118 aimed at settlement of the Syrian crisis,” says the letter. -0-

Turkey turns its back on the EU: The New York Times

Turkey turns its back on the EU: The New York Times

17:29, 5 April, 2014

YEREVAN, APRIL 5, ARMENPRESS. A generation ago, it was Ankara’s
assumption that its central role in the region’s geopolitics would
translate into acceptance as a member of the prosperous European
Union, now numbering 28 countries. But that assumption has frayed. As
reports “Armenpress”, The New York Times stated this in one of its
most recent articles.

Among other things it was particularly noted: “After months of
increasingly authoritarian rule by an embattled Prime Minister
Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the portals of the club seem more than ever to
be closing on Turkey. And paradoxically, Turkey’s most recent
elections may deepen its estrangement, raising questions not only
about European readiness to embrace Turkey but also about Mr.
Erdogan’s interest in pursuing it.

“It is becoming clear that Erdogan’s Turkey does not belong to
Europe,” a prominent German politician, Andreas Scheuer, said after
the Turkish leader accepted his party’s victory in the municipal
ballot on Sunday not just as a personal vindication but a mandate for
what an opponent called a “witch hunt” against his adversaries. “A
country in which the government threatens its critics and tramples
democratic values cannot belong to Europe,” Mr. Scheuer said.

“What happens next will worry many Turks as they hear Erdogan vowing
to get even with his critics and opponents,” the columnist Simon
Tisdall said in The Guardian. “That Turkey is now a deeply divided
nation is only too clear. That Erdogan’s future actions may serve to
deepen those divisions is the great fear.”

The effort to accede to the European Union — haltingly underway since
2005 — pulls at one set of reflexes, while Mr. Erdogan’s style tugs at
another. Last year, he deployed the police against protesters in
Istanbul’s Gezi Park. In December a major corruption scandal broke
over his aides and his family. Just in recent weeks, his government
has moved to block Twitter and YouTube — depicted as his enemies’
tools in a campaign to besmirch him with faked evidence of
malfeasance.”

Union of Armenians of Russia pays tribute to memory of innocent vict

Union of Armenians of Russia pays tribute to memory of innocent
victims who died in Syria

17:33, 5 April, 2014

YEREVAN, APRIL 5, ARMENPRESS. Upon the initiative of the Union of
Armenians of Russia, a ceremony of placing wreaths was held on April 5
in front of the Syrian Embassy to the Russian Federation.

The ceremony was dedicated to the memory of innocent victims, who died in Syria.

As reports “Armenpress”, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary
Ambassador of Syria to the Russian Federation Riad Haddad stated that
they want to protect their people from various terrorist groups.

Among other things, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador
of Syria to the Russian Federation Riad Haddad
underscored: “It’s not strange that Turkey supports the terrorists.

Turkish aircrafts helped the terrorists to intrude Kessab.”

The armed incursion began on Friday, March 21, with rebels associated
with Al-Qaeda’s al-Nusra Front, Sham al-Islam and
Ansar al-Sham crossing the Turkish border and attacking the Armenian
civilian population of Kessab. The attackers immediately seized two
guard posts overlooking Kessab, including a strategic hill known as
Observatory 45 and later took over the border crossing point with
Turkey. Snipers targeted the civilian population and launched mortar
attacks on the town and the surrounding villages.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers crossed the Turkish
border with Syria openly passing through Turkish military barracks.

According to Turkish media reports, the attackers carried their
injured back to Turkey for treatment in the town of Yayladagi.
Some 670 Armenian families, the majority of the population of Kessab,
were evacuated by the local Armenian community leadership to safer
areas in neighboring Basit and Latakia. Ten to fifteen families with
relations too elderly to move were either unable to leave or chose to
stay in their homes.

On Saturday, March 22, Syrian troops launched a counteroffensive in an
attempt to regain the border crossing point, eye-witnesses and state
media reported. However, on Sunday, March 23, the extremist groups
once again entered the town of Kessab, took the remaining Armenian
families hostage, desecrated the town’s three Armenian churches,
pillaging local residences and occupying the town and surrounding
villages.

Located in the northwestern corner of Syria, near the border with
Turkey, Kessab had, until very recently, evaded major battles in the
Syrian conflict. The local Armenian population had increased in recent
years with the city serving as safe-haven for those fleeing from the
war-torn cities of Yacubiye, Rakka and Aleppo.

Armenia compels Azerbaijan to spend more money – military analyst

April 05, 2014 | 02:12

YEREVAN. – There is no password which is impossible to crack in the
modern era of the development of electronic technology.

Military analyst Arkadi Grigoryan told the aforementioned to Armenian
News-NEWS.am, as he commented on the Azerbaijan media reports that the
country’s armed forces will be using encoded telephones.

In his words, even though it is more difficult to decrypt the
information being transmitted over such telephones, it is not
impossible.

“In fact, by spending a few thousand [US dollars], Armenia succeeds in
compelling Azerbaijan to spend tens of millions [of dollars],”
Grigoryan noted.

He added that the next step of the Azerbaijani army will be a
transition to satellite telephones.
