UN CHIEF DOESN’T SUPPORT POPE’S COMMENTS ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Spokesman for Ban Ki-moon says he considers the slaughter of Armenians
“atrocity crimes”.

A spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday said Ban
considers the slaughter of Armenians by Ottoman Turks 100 years ago
“atrocity crimes” but is not supporting Pope Francis’ description of
the killings as “the first genocide of the 20th century”.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric was quoted by The Associated Press (AP)
as telling reporters that Ban took note of the pope’s comments and is
fully aware of “the sensitivities related to the characterization of
what happened” in 1915 and the April 24 commemoration of the 100th
anniversary of “the tragic events” by Armenia and others around
the world.

He added that the secretary-general firmly believes that the
commemoration and continuing cooperation between Armenians and Turks
“with a view to establishing the facts about what happened should
strengthen our collective determination to prevent similar atrocity
crimes from ever happening in the future.”

Dujarric said in response to a question that Ban did not envision an
international commission to examine the facts, saying, “There’ve been
discussions with the countries concerned, and communities concerned
and I think it’s important that those discussions continue.”

He sidestepped several questions on whether the secretary-general
agreed with the pope’s characterization, and whether Francis was
right to raise the issue, according to AP.

“The UN has sought to strengthen the capacity of the international
community to prevent such atrocity crimes from ever occurring,”
Dujarric said.

In his comments, the Pope had named the Armenian genocide, the
Holocaust and Stalinism as the three greatest human tragedies to
occur during the last century.

“In the past century, our human family has lived through three massive
and unprecedented tragedies,” Francis stated, at the beginning of a
Mass in the Armenian Catholic rite held at the Vatican.

“The first, which is widely considered ‘the first genocide of
the 20th century’, struck your own Armenian people,” he said, in
comments he would have been aware would not go down well in Turkey,
where authorities deny the scale of the massacre which took place
between 1915-1917.

But the Pope called categorically for an end to such denial.

“Concealing or denying evil is like allowing a wound to keep bleeding
without bandaging it,” he said.

Turkey was infuriated by the comments, summoning the Vatican’s
ambassador to Ankara to express its “disappointment” and saying the
Pope’s speech had caused “a problem of trust” between the two states.

The Vatican Mass dedicated to the Armenian Genocide centennial was not
only of exceptional religious importance, but also of solid political
significance, MP Samvel Farmanyan said, upon his return from the
Vatican. He believes the Pope’s remarks are a landmark in the process
of international recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide.

“Most importantly, the Pope did not avoid calling the things by their
right names and described the massacre of Armenians 100 years as “the
first genocide of the 20th century,” he told a press conference today.

According to Farmanyan, the proclamation of Gregory of Narek as the
Doctor of the Church was an exceptional event for the Armenian Church
and in the Armenian history, in general. He reminded that the title
is given to individuals recognized for their contribution to theology
or doctrine.

Another peculiarity Samvel Farmanyan pointed to was the fact that
for the first time in history the Armenian Catholicos’ prayer was
heard at the Holy See. “This is a step towards better understanding
between the Catholic and the Armenian Apostolic Churches.”

Durant sa visite a Ercan Topaca, prefet de Hatay, Gormez a ete
interviewe lundi a propos de la declaration du souverain pontife,
durant la messe organisee dimanche a la basilique Saint-Pierre, “a
la memoire des Armeniens qui ont perdu la vie en 1915” en presence
du president armenien Serge Sarkissian.

Le Pape a declare durant la messe que “l’humanite a connu trois grandes
tragedies au siècle dernier, dont celle consideree comme le premier
genocide du 20ème siècle, et qui a vise (…) le peuple Armenien.”

“Il est attristant et inquietant de voir que les lobbys politiques et
les societes de relations publiques ont pu acceder aux prières et aux
messes des instances religieuses, a declare Mehmet Gormez. Je suis
profondement attriste que, sous l’influence des lobbys politiques,
des propos sans appui soient exprimes durant une messe et une prière,
(…) par l’honorable Pape Francois et une institution aussi serieuse
que le Vatican.”

Selon Gormez, la mission des religieux est de se concentrer sur les
souffrances actuelles plutôt que celles du passe, car “elles sont plus
graves que les anciennes. Des millions de personnes ont ete tuees,
massacrees. Elles ont ete forcees a se deplacer, a quitter leur pays.

De grandes tragedies surviennent en Afrique,” a-t-il affirme.

TURKEY USES EVERY BIT OF POLITICAL LEVERAGE AGAINST THE POPE’S REMARK ON ARMENIAN GENOCIDE – ANALYST

YEREVAN, April 14. /ARKA/. Turkey is trying to use every bit of
leverage, including hysteria, in response to Pope Francis’ statement
about the Armenian genocide, head of political studies at the Caucasus
Institute Sergey Minasyan said on Sputnik-Armenia radio station.

On Sunday the head of the Roman Catholic Church served a landmark
mass in the Armenian Catholic rite in St. Peter’s Basilica. In his
speech, Pope Francis used the world genocide in describing the mass
killings of Armenians in Ottoman Turkey a century ago. The Pope’s
statement provoked anger in Turkey. Turkey recalled the ambassador
to the Vatican, and called the Vatican ambassador to the foreign
ministry for consultation.

There is no more influential political, public or cultural figure
than the Pope is, and Turkey’s efforts in response to the statement
could be expected, Minasyan said.

The Vatican is not a mere religious structure: it is connected with
areas where historical truth and moral values play a great role,
he said.

Pope Francis’ statement on the Armenian genocide was not something new
to the Catholic Church as Pope John Paul II made a similar statement
back in 2001, the expert said, as cited by Novosti-Armenia.

The Armenian genocide was the first genocide committed in XX century.

Turkey rejects the accusation of massacres and the killing of one
and a half million Armenians during World War I.

The fact of the Armenian genocide is recognized by many countries,
particularly by Uruguay, Russia, France, Lithuania, most of the U.S.

states, as well as by the parliaments of Greece, Cyprus, Argentina,
Belgium, Wales, National Council of Switzerland, Common House of

backed by computer technologies. Talking to ArmInfo, Ruben Muradyan,
IT auditor at Ucom Company, explained: “if anyone having state power
decides to get data on you, he will do it, and there is no sense
in hiding. He is a professional, has money. You have no chances to
conceal anything.”

It is not a secret that the US National Security Agency (NSA) is
tapping not only the U.S. but also foreign citizens. It is noteworthy

divide them into segments. For instance, the state network that
covers websites and internal local government networks is one of
the most vulnerable ones for any country. The given segment has been
well protected by the national security service of Armenia since 2009
and no serious incidents have been registered by present. Comparing
to Azerbaijan’s network, ours is more protected. However, there is
a circumstance that cannot be neglected: we may not know about all
incidents, so our data will be based only on what we know. Hacker
attacks have decreased from several hundreds to several dozens
per month this year. Azerbaijanis attack on certain calendar days
and it appears to me that it is the calm before the storm. As for
vulnerability to viruses, attacks, and visit to inflected websites
(including pornographic ones), Kaspersky and McAfee anti-virus labs
say Armenia is usually among Top-3 countries with most vulnerable
users and websites.”

It is noteworthy that Ucom Company organized a Media and Information
Security Conference on April 10- 11 ahead of the Armenian Genocide
Centennial. Mass media representatives, specialists in the information
and cyber security, bloggers and other experts attended the event held
under the project “Recognize 1915” (). A public
awareness-raising instrument has been created under the project. It
enables everyone to add a banner telling about the Genocide of
Armenians to their e-mails and inform and remind their friends and
colleagues of the Genocide through e-correspondence.

U.S. SHOULD CALL ARMENIAN GENOCIDE BY ITS NAME: LA TIMES

The Los Angeles Times Editorial Board calls on U.S. President Barack
Obama to take a cue from Pope Francis and include the word genocide
in his annual message marking the centennial of the Armenian genocide.

Sunday, Pope Francis took the audacious step of celebrating a Mass
at St. Peter’s Basilica to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the
slaughter of 1.5 million Armenians, and then calling those killings
by their name: genocide. For that, the Turkish government summoned
the Vatican’s envoy in Ankara for a talking-to and recalled its
own ambassador to the Vatican for “consultation.” Turkish Foreign
Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced that “the pope’s statement,
which is out of touch with both historical facts and legal basis,
is simply unacceptable.”

That’s right: A full century after the mass killings by the Ottoman
Empire, the Turkish government continues to reject the documented
historical reality that Turkey was responsible for the first genocide
in what turned out to be a century of grotesque ethnic, religious
and political violence, from the Holocaust to the Cambodian killing
fields to the Rwandan genocide.

Turkey’s disingenuous view compounds the original crime with the
insult of denial. (Turkey claims that most Armenian victims were
killed in a civil war, and that many Turks also perished at the hands
of Armenians.) Yet the U.S. government has been complicit in Turkey’s
defiance, thanks primarily to a policy of realpolitik that calls for
deference to a strategic ally in an increasingly unstable region of
the world. That’s why American presidents have repeatedly refused to
call the genocide a genocide.

Although Barack Obama promised as a candidate to “recognize the
Armenian genocide” if he became president, so far he (like his
predecessors) has avoided using that apparently too-blunt word in
annual statements condemning the “Meds Yeghern,” as it’s known in
Armenian. The farthest he’s gone is to call the killings a “horror”
while reaffirming the U.S.

government’s adherence “to the principle that such atrocities must
always be remembered if we are to prevent them from occurring ever
again.”

But how can you remember if you won’t acknowledge the facts? Obama
has said that “a full, frank, and just acknowledgment of the facts
is in all of our interests,” yet he has continued to engage in a
diplomatic dance out of misdirected fidelity to an ally.

It’s true that the U.S.-Turkey relationship is a very important one,
and one worth nurturing and protecting, but not at the expense of
denying history.

Strategically, Turkey needs U.S. support — and weapons — as much
as the United States needs a presence in the region (including its
Air Force base near Incirlik). This is a partnership based on mutual
interests, and we would hope that it would not be imperiled by an
insistence on truth.

The president should take a cue from Pope Francis and include the
word genocide in his annual message marking the carnage a century ago.

Enduring friendships require such honesty.

CONCERT IN FINLAND MARKS ARMENIAN GENOCIDE CENTENNIAL

On April 11, worldwide tour of the Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra
in commemoration of the Armenian Genocide Centenary was held at the
Tampere Hall (Finland), the biggest music hall of Scandinavia.

Under the baton of maestro Eduard Topchyan and with wonderful solo
performance by famous German violinist Isabelle Faust, the concert was
warmly welcomed by the Finnish audience. Deputy Speaker of the Finnish
Parliament Mr. Anssi Joutsenlahti, Secretary General of the Finnish
Ecumenical Council Heikki Huttunen, Governor of Tampere Esa Halme,
senior representatives of the Government of Finland, State Secretaries,
parliamentarians, the Ambassadors and diplomats accredited to Helsinki,
public figures and community representatives attended the concert,
held under the moto “I remember and I demand”.

In his welcoming remarks, Ambassador of Armenia to Sweden Artak
Apitonian reflected on the history of Genocide and its consequences,
the commitment of the Armenian state to the prevention of acts
of genocide, fight against the policy of denial, as well as main
achievements and cultural renaissance of Armenians over the last one
hundred years.

An exhibition called “Armenian Genocide and Scandinavian Response”
was opened at the foyer of the Tampere Hall, dedicated to the
missionaries who have saved lives of thousands women and children
during the Genocide, as well as pro-Armenian activity of advanced
societies of Scandinavia.

In the framework of the exhibition, the presentation of the new book
“Silenced Voices” by Finnish Orthodox priest Seraphim Sepala and the
Finnish translation of the Grigoris Balakian’s “Armenian Golgotha”
was held for the visitors.

After the concert, well received by the audience, a meeting between
the high-level guests, representatives of the Armenian community and
members of orchestra was organized on the initiative of the Embassy
of Armenia in Finland.

Plus tôt, la Turquie a rappele son ambassadeur au Vatican “pour
consultations”. Dans le meme temps, l’ambassadeur du Vatican a Ankara
a ete appele au ministère des Affaires etrangères de la Turquie.

VLADIMIR SPIVAKOV TO GIVE THREE CONCERTS IN YEREVAN TO COMMEMORATE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE CENTENNIAL

The National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia headed by Vladimir
Spivakov will perform in Yerevan on April 14-16. The “Vladimir
Spivakov Invites” Festival will be dedicated to the Armenian Genocide
Centennial.

The official website of the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia
reports that the concert program includes compositions by Mahler,
Mozart, and other well-known composers.

Vladimir Spivakov is a leading Russian conductor and violinist best
known for his work with the Moscow Virtuosi chamber orchestra.

Spivakov currently serves as the Artistic Director and Principal
Conductor of the National Philharmonic of Russia.
