ANKARA: Former Deputy Arrested For Death Threats Against Erdogan

FORMER DEPUTY ARRESTED FOR DEATH THREATS AGAINST PRESIDENT ERDOGAN

Daily Sabah, Turkey
Dec 8 2014

Daily Sabah

ISTANBUL — Former deputy Feyzi Ýþbaþaran was arrested on Monday in
Istanbul due to death threats against President Recep Tayyip Erdoðan.

After his arrival from London, Ýþbaþaran was detained by police.

Police were informed on the whereabouts of the former deputy, setting
up a stakeout in front of a hotel he was staying in. As he was seen
exiting officers quickly took action arresting the former deputy. The
police have taken Ýþbaþaran to court where he will be tried.

Ýþbaþaran was arrested for sending death threats via Twitter to
President Recep Tayyip Erdoðan and his wife Emine Erdoðan. The former
deputy said that Erdoðan “definitely deserves death” as he was taken in
to custody at 06:00 a.m., along with numerous tweets insulting Erdoðan.

His tweets regarding Erdoðan were evaluated under the offense of
“publicly insulting the president.”

Ýþbaþaran had earlier threatened Armenian intellectual, Senior Advisor
to Turkish Prime Minister and Daily Sabah columnist Etyen Mahcupyan,
saying he is an “agent” and must be “taken down.”

“Armenians would want peace when he [Mahcupyan] is killed. He is not
Hrant!” Ýþbaþaran tweeted, giving reference to Hrant Dink, an Armenian
journalist whose murder in 2007 led to a public outcry. Ýþbaþaran
also insulted and threatened a disagreeing user on Twitter.

A lawyer attacked Ýþbaþaran while he was being brought to the court,
while another group protested against his threats.

Ýþbaþaran was a former deputy of the eastern province Elazýð for
governing Ak Party and center-right ANAP.

His bitter dispute with a police officer in 2009, including swears and
threats, were taped and sent to media outlets as well as to the prime
minister of the time, Recep Tayyip Erdoðan. He resigned from Ak Party
in 2009 after the party administration sent him to the disciplinary
committee for expulsion.

Prior to this incident, Ýþbaþaran claimed that there were “groups”
within the police, conspiring against each other and against the
government to start a dispute with the Turkish General Staff.

Portugal, Ethiopia Commemorate Relationship

ETHIOPIA: PORTUGAL, ETHIOPIA COMMEMORATE RELATIONSHIP

Addis Fortune, Ethopian
Dec 8 2014

The Embassy of Portugal has announced a program designed to commemorate
the fifth centenary of Ethio-Portuguese relations. It is expected to
officially open with a reception and show on December, 8, at Addis
Abeba national theatre.

“Lately we have been receiving different interest from Portuguese
companies who want to invest in Ethiopia in differing sectors. I
believe this would be reinforced in coming years and the program would
create a platform for Portuguese investors,” said Antonio Luiz Cotrim,
ambassador of Portugal to Ethiopia.

The relation between Ethiopia and Portugal has scored over 500 years,
beginning from the time when Queen Elleni of Ethiopia sent a diplomatic
mission to Portugal headed by an Armenian descent called Mathewos,
in 1514.

The program is organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs (MoFA) and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MoCT).

In Defiance To Fate

IN DEFIANCE TO FATE

Sunday, 07 December 2014 11:27

December 7, 1988… Day of Remembrance of the Spitak earthquake
victims… It has forever entered the history of the Armenian people
as asad and tragic date. 26 years have passed since that fateful day,
when a terrible earthquake took place in the northern regions of
Armenia, erasing the town of Spitak from the earth, destructing the
towns of Leninakan, Kirovakan, Stepanavan and hundreds of villages,
claiming the lives of 25 thousand people.

By the standards of human life, it is, in fact, quite a long time,
but even the relentless and ruthless time was not able to erase the
pain of that terrible tragedy from the collective memory of our people
and to make bring it to oblivion.

It is known that a man is alive untill alive is the memory of him.

This truth applies equally to a people. On December 7, the Armenian
people all over the world will honor the memory of the earthquake
victims. On this day, keeping a mournful silence, we will again
remember and mentallyexperience the 25-year-old dramatic events.

Citizens of Armenia and Artsakh, as well as our compatriots in the
Diaspora will bow their heads before themonuments to the victims of
the earthquake, light commemoration candles and say prayers for the
peace of each soul killed by the blind disaster…

The thousand-year history of the Armenian people contains many tragic
pages that have forever etched in the people’s memory, constantly
echoing there with undying pain. This sad series was replenished by
the Spitak earthquake. Perhaps the Armenian people, which went through
a lot of troubles and destructions, regardless of the incompatibility
of the scales and consequences, experienced such a monstrous shock
only during the Genocide of 1915.Armenia became the epicenter of not
only the heaviest earthquake, but also of an immense tragedy and pain
that the human mind was not able to reach.

Fortunately, those truly apocalyptic days, the Armenian people did
not break and did not despair. Everyone took the tragedy as his
own, feltempathy for the fate of the motherland, and realized his
responsibility for its future. The terrible trouble consolidated the
Armenian people and made itgather the collective will in a fist. Like
at the critical stages of its hard fate, the people mobilized all its
moral potential to confront the tragedy and to eliminate the disaster
consequences. As if yielding to the self-preservation instinct, our
people, thanks to its unity, courage and fortitude, could overcomethe
trouble, restore the destructions, and rise from the ashes.

On December 7, we remember not only the victims of the tragedy. On
this day, we also remember with gratitude those who responded to our
tragedy at the fateful time and stretched unselfishly their helping
hand to us. A wave of solidarity with the Armenian people arose
worldwide. The news echoed painfully in the hearts of millions of
people, uniting them in the name of a sublime idea – not to leave
Armenia alone with its trouble and to help it overcome the ordeal.

Armenia became the center of attraction of human kindness and
compassion, where humanitarian assistance from all over the world
was delivered and thousands of volunteers came to participate in
rescue operations in the disaster area. The huge moral and material
support by the peoples of the then our common motherland – the USSR
and by many world countries allowed Armenia to withstand the blows of
the merciless disaster. The memory of our people will keep forever
the gratitude to those who did not remain indifferent and displayed
complicity and compassion.

Unfortunately, natural disasters, including earthquakes, were,
are, and will probably remain the companions of the mankind, from
time to time collecting their mournful tribute. However, in a hard
struggle with a disaster the winner is who can comprehend its tragic
consequences and learn lessons from them. That’s why the present and
future generations must avoid the repetition of fatal errors that
are truly disastrous for our small nation.

We suffered huge and irretrievable losses, but we withstood this blow
and came out of the ordeal with honor. And this, too, is a guarantee
of the viability and long life of our people – to live in defiance
to fate. Life triumphed, trampling death. The huge destructions and
enormous deprivations are in the past. But, alive is the inescapable
pain of losing thousands and thousands of our compatriots – the
innocent victims of the tragedy, for which December 7, 1988 was the
last day in their life. Also, alive is the memory of them…

Patriarch Manoukian To Catholicos Karekin II

PATRIARCH MANOUKIAN TO CATHOLICOS KAREKIN II

Nourhan Archbishop Manoukian
Armenian Patriarch of Jerusalem

Your Holiness,

Be sure that I very reluctantly submit these lines to paper,
particularly when a while back I was informed that you have reproached
some of your bishops for their passivity in not responding to the
many criticism levelled against you on websites. It is said “Silence
is a sign of agreement”.

In September, at the photo-opportunity of the representatives’
gathering at Holy Echmiadzin once again you raised the issue of
demoting the Armenian Apostolic Patriarchate of Jerusalem to a
“diocese of a sort”, which you had first raised in the first years
of your incumbency at a similar gathering. The adage says “the
fruit does not fall far from the tree”, and this year a number of
ranting bishops…Hovnan, Mikayel, Haygazoun, and Hovagim … for
understandable reasons and motivations – (not so much to protect
their thrones and positions–but to secure their pockets–sensing
your avowed aim and only concern) have “heroically” demanded that
the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem be urgently brought under the
jurisdiction of Echmiadzin.

Among those bishops–Bishop Hovnan [Derderian]–expressed the
desire, a few years ago, to join the Brotherhood of St James,
together with his brother-in-arms Bishop Pagrad who was enchanted
by the prospect of a brighter future. Instead of concerning himself
with the immediate threat posed by the activities of the increasing
number of sectarians and Catholics in his diocese, Bishop Mikayel
spends his time on questions above his intellectual abilities. While
materialistic Bishop Haigazoun who waited a very long time to be
worthy for the rank of bishop, has transformed his once held anti
‘Karekinian rhyme’ into ‘only Karekin’ hymn. I do not wish to say
anything about the lamentable Bishop Hovagim, who like some of the
Echmiadzin Brotherhood bishops when visiting Jerusalem could not be
stopped from pouring his complaints about your despotic regime. I
will confine myself by using only these words regarding your attitude
towards the entire Brotherhood.

All those members of the Echmiadzin Brotherhood, who have enjoyed
the warm hospitality of this Holy See, seem to be hostages to their
business instincts and have not wanted to see the eternal struggle that
each member of the St James’ Brotherhood wages to protect and preserve
that national right of the Armenian people. As if our everyday problems
and difficulties with the other Christian denominations, the constant
conflict with the Jews and Islam, are not enough now the Brotherhood of
the Holy See like yourself launches a crusade against the Patriarchate
of Jerusalem, intoxicated by your uncontrollable desire for absolute
authority … the fruit does not fall far from the tree. Your Holiness
not very long ago attempted to neutralize the Armenian Patriarchates
of Jerusalem and Constantinople and failed. Do not try again. Never
forget one fact…that foreigners have come to know the Armenian
Church by virtue and through the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem.

This holy institution has survived through the ages despite all
human and natural disasters, your predecessors–a whole generation
of catholicoi– have acknowledged and respected the independence and
Constitution of the Patriarchal hierarchy, and what is it that gives
you the authority to encourage your stooges to adopt such a negative
stance towards the Brotherhood? Do you think you are wiser than your
predecessors? Commercial and business acumen are not manifestations
of wisdom. You can buy men and discard men but CAN NEVER USURP AND
APPROPRIATE HOLINESS.

During the Second World War, Winston Churchill warned the German
leadership “those who seed breeze will reap hurricane”. And you
over decades of incumbency have sawn breeze and now you must prepare
yourself to reap hurricane. Years have passed since the collapse of
the Soviet Union, from the days when they would employ civilians with
murky pasts and even vicious clergy to create such institutions like
the ‘Free Church’. In our times it is painful to see the same diseased
spirit is rekindled in the Motherland, where new sects flourish and
strengthen under your ‘benevolent and tolerant gaze’. You who are
called to be the leader of our Church hand in hand with anti-religious
and faithless political leaders are trying with your auctioned mind
and childish, capricious decisions to uproot the centuries-old oak
tree that is our Armenian Church, because despite your age [you]
are not yet matured. During the entire course of your life you have
lacked common sense, the combination of faith and consciousness that
is one of the greatest virtues man has been blessed with.

Like your sophist reasoning also irresponsible is your expressions and
decisions. The Armenian Apostolic Church, during its centuries-old
existence, has not been afraid of external dangers, so much as
by your senseless and destructive acts which your Holiness–a son
born of the bosom of the same Church–are waging war within it and
against it. To deprive the Church from its characteristic features
means cutting the umbilical cord that connects it with its past at a
time when the strengthening of religion and its influence coalesce
creating our image and the miracle of our century. Those who have
given themselves the authority to guard the public interest and
oversee its moral standing must surely know that a flint will not
light a fire without being struck and an abscess will not burst
unless it is lanced. We write these lines believing that to witness
evil and remain indifferent means being an accomplice to evil. Once
again in relation to our request to ordain Father Baret a bishop you
have displayed the same immature disposition-relying on the rumours
and grudges of certain individuals, who having cut their umbilical
cords from their people, attempt with few dollars to buy favour-
always disregarding the truth which in this case is the decision of
the Synod of the Brotherhood of St James, Jerusalem.

Without cause you blame individuals and with no ability to separate
the fact from fiction, you are one who according to the ability of his
sight, or by the measure of his coloured glasses sees reality. In other
words, Your Holiness, you are among those who harness the horse behind
the cart. The time has come to stop pretending you are a resident of
paradise attempting to cover your moral nakedness with fig leaves.

In the present time our Church finds itself confronting such dire state
and serious situation which give rise to serious doubts regarding
the future, when for a moment re-imaging all the virtuous traits of
our nation by virtue of which our people have been worthy or could
still be worthy. Be sure that the strength and greatness of a nation
are not found in material achievement, because people do not perish
as a consequence of physical wounds they receive, but by spiritual
wounds. The wounds inflicted upon our people are more the result of
our own irresponsible and self-centred actions and can be regarded as
a natural death of a nation. The time has come Your Holiness for you
to rediscover our spiritual values, if you have had any. If not then
you yourself should declare yourself defrocked and spare our Mother
Church from absolute destruction.

The Armenian Church has always been the home of our people’s
intellectual, spiritual and moral aspirations. It has been par
excellence the life boat of the covenant of our faith. Our Church,
this estimable religious-national institution is our nation’s greatest
institution, which surviving all kinds of historical and political
adverse conditions has taken shape and definition has reached
us and you as “Father of All” [Õ~@Õ¡ÕµO~@ Õ¡Õ´Õ¥Õ¶Õ¥O~AÕ¸O~BÕ¶]
are obliged to act without vengence, with favour and particularly
graciously. Your perceived prejudices with or without foundations,
mostly without foundation and in some instances it will be looked
upon as a virtue if you could acknowledge your mistakes.

Your Holiness can be sure that the Holy See of Echmiadzin for us is and
will always remain the source of our inspiration and hope, but you…

ARMENIAN CENTRAL BANK TO SELL FOREX ONLY THROUGH AUCTIONS TILL END OF THE YEAR

YEREVAN, December 8. /ARKA/. From December 8 till the end of this year,
the Central Bank of Armenia (CBA) will be applying a new forex sale
strategy, says the regulator’s statement.

A preliminarily defined amount of foreign currency will be sold every
day, all through auctions, according to the report.

The bank had to resort to this policy to settle the current forex
market situation, to tame currency rate fluctuations and restore the
balance in the market, says the report.

The central bank will report on the outcome on a daily basis to ensure
transparency of the auctions.

In order to reduce its influence on the dram rate, the central bank
will be stage-by-stage cutting the size of its daily interventions
before a balanced dram rate is formed, says the report.

Armenian dram hit an eight-year record high after November 24, having
jumped by 16.6 points to 435drams per $1. The dram versus dollar rate
was 442.33 on December 2 and surged by another 4.03 points to 447.86
drams by the end of last week. -0–

Weakening Armenian Dram Is Blamed On Imbalance Between Exports And I

WEAKENING ARMENIAN DRAM IS BLAMED ON IMBALANCE BETWEEN EXPORTS AND IMPORTS

YEREVAN, December 8. / ARKA /. Vazgen Safaryan, the chairman of the
Union of Domestic Commodity Producers, has blamed today the weakening
Armenian national currency, the dram, on the imbalance between exports
and imports.

The Armenian dram has fallen from 435.26 to one U.S. dollar on December
1, to 447.86 on December 5. According to Safaryan, the main condition
for the stability of the national currency is the correct ratio of
exports and imports.

Other reasons behind the depreciation of the dram, according to him
are the dependence of the Armenian economy on the Russian ruble, and
the growing US economy that ahs pushed up US dollar’s value against
other currencies.

“Armenian exports in the first ten months of this year amounted to
$1.250 billion. In 2013 the total exports were worth $1.470 billion.

This year exports are expected to exceed $1.5 billion, while imports
will exceed exports three times,” Safaryan said at a press conference
on Monday.

According to the National Statistical Service (NSS), Armenian exports
in January-October 2014 amounted to $1.250 billion, an increase of
2.9% from the year before, while imports grew by 3.8 percent to over
$3.6 billion. The resulting foreign trade deficit amounted to about
$2.4 billion.

According to Safaryan, the foreign deficit is being somewhat offset
by private money transfers from Russia and other countries. He added
that their amount is also falling as the bulk of remittances -over 80
percent annually- usually comes form Russia whose economy is falling
in recession.

According to the Central Bank of Armenia, a total of $1.484.7 billion
were sent to Armenia as private money transfers in the first 10 months
of the outgoing year , a decrease of 1.9% compared to the same period
in 2013. Private money transfers from Russia decreased by 4.4% from
the same period last year, to about $.1 241.4 billion.-0-
