Armenian director Sergi Paradjanov’s The Colour of Pomegranates
(1968), starring Sofiko Chiaureli, is not what you would call a
traditionally entertaining film. A more appropriate set of terms
would be, intriguing, intelligent and challenging. The film does not
possess a conventional plot, although it loosely follows the life of
19th Century Armenian bard Sagat Nova.

The Colour of Pomegranates is a metaphysical, surrealist exploration
of the poets mind and works. Interestingly the film was made as
part of the 200th anniversary of Nova’s birth in 1969 and received
Soviet backing.

Potential viewers should be warned that this is a film that you have
to dedicate yourself to. I would however argue that if you engage with
the film on its own terms you will be richly rewarded and accept that
you may need to watch the film more than once to come to terms with it.

The Colour of Pomegranates is divided into eight chapters, or
tableaux’s, that take the viewer on a journey through the three
stages of Nova’s life. The film, rather unsurprisingly from the title,
exploits the use of vibrant colour. One of the most beautiful scenes
can be viewed early on when pomegranate juice bleeds through a rich
cream cloth. Throughout the film Paradjanov compares and contrasts
colour to create magnificent, rich scenes.

Distinctive to Paradjanov is his understanding of objects and their
relationship to one another. Paradjanov belonged to a group of Eastern
European directors who experimented with ‘Poetic Cinema,’ this form
of cinema replaces words with striking images creating a language
unique to film but equally (if not more so) informative. It makes
a huge amount of sense that Paradjanov was attracted to the subject
of Sagat Nova as it provided an opportunity to experiment with the
relationship of literature to film.

Paradjanov also stressed that whilst The Colour of Pomegranates is an
unconventional biography of Nova it was also largely autobiographical.

In fact Sofiko Chiaureli who plays several roles throughout the film
that cross genders including that of Nova, provides not only a dream
like quality to the film but reflects Parajanov’s sexual identity; he
was imprisoned for homosexual acts with a KGB agent in the early 60’s.

Paradjanov like to experiment with mime and theatre in his work and
this is clearly evident from watching The Colour of Pomegranates.

Theatrical devices are exploited again and again to weave together
elements that reoccur throughout the eight chapters. In the end
the result is a magnificent surrealist dream that throws you into a
tapestry of ideas that emerge from both Paradjanov and Nova’s life
and works.

The Colour of Pomegranates is a true masterpiece of cinema that
takes the concept of the biographical film one leap further and is a
work that stands the test of time being as fresh as the year it was
released forty-two years ago.

The version of The Colour of Pomegranates available on this DVD is the
Russian edit, featuring Russian language in the dividing chapters. The
other version is known as the Armenian edit, neither can claim to be
the director’s cut, the production story, which is too complex to go
into in this review, is fascinating and can be explored in the DVD’s
special features.

MP: Authorities Won’t Meddle With Legal Processes To Save Dialogue W

MP: AUTHORITIES WON’T MEDDLE WITH LEGAL PROCESSES TO SAVE DIALOGUE WITH ANC

PanARMENIAN.Net
August 29, 2011

PanARMENIAN.Net – The Armenian authorities will not intervene in legal
processes even for the sake of resuming dialogue with the Armenian
National Congress (ANC), a member of the ruling Republican Party of
Armenia said.

“What ANC demands now absolutely contradicts their previous claims
and the reason why the Congress stepped back from participating in
the political dialogue is beneath criticism,” MP Gagik Minasyan,
told a press conference in Yerevan on August 29.

He denied that the authorities promised to change the preventive
punishment for activist Tigran Arakelyan in order to continue talks.

At that, Minasyan expressed his respect to the working group of ANC
members and said that the meetings proceeded in a friendly atmosphere
despite sharp disparities.

Representatives of the ruling coalition have held meeting since
July 18, the two main issues on the agenda being conduction of
extraordinary election (on ANC demand) and development of canons of
political competition (as suggested by the authorities).

Problems emerged when police detained 7 young ANC activists. According
to the ANC, on August 9 police officers used violence against ANC
activists Tigran Arakelyan and Artak Karapetyan. Upon arrival to the
site, activists Areg Gevorgyan, Sahak Muradyan, Vahagn Gevorgyan,
Sargis Gevorgyan and David Kirimajyan tried to settle the dispute but
were beaten as well, the ANC said. All above-mentioned were taken to
a police station.

Currently, Tigran Arakelyan is kept in custody. The others were
released.

On August 26, the Congress announced that it suspends the dialogue
and believes Arakelyan to be a political prisoner.

What Armenian Catholicos Wrote To US President Barack Obama

WHAT ARMENIAN CATHOLICOS WROTE TO US PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA

epress.am
08.29.2011

In Dec. 2009, His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and
Catholicos of All Armenians, sent a letter to the US Ambassador to
Armenia addressed to US President Barack Obama regarding the issues
concerning ethnic and religious minorities in the Republic of Georgia,
according to a Wikileaks cable released Aug. 26, 2011.

In the letter, His Holiness Karekin II states that he wishes to bring
to Obama’s attention the “unacceptable situation” regarding the status
of religious minorities in Georgia, noting that the situation has
worsened since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

“As head of the Armenian Church, our unfortunate experience over the
past two decades leads us to conclude that nothing in the religious
sphere within Georgia has changed for the better since the collapse
of the Soviet Union. On the contrary, religious life in the Republic
of Georgia today “except within the Georgian Orthodox Church” is
more restricted, repressed and intolerant for ethnic and religious
minorities.

“After numerous years of effort and countless unsuccessful attempts
to work with the Georgian government and the

Georgian Orthodox Church to regulate the Armenian Church diocese
and communities in Georgia, we are forced to formally bring to your
attention the unresolved issues regarding: 1) the lack of legal status
for religious minorities in Georgia; and 2) the Georgian government’s
refusal to return church buildings and church properties. We require
your decisive assistance to compel the Georgian authorities to live
up to their international obligations, among which are the fostering
of an environment where all Christian churches, as well as religious
organizations of other faiths, can operate normally and have their
human rights respected and protected,” the letter reads.

The Armenian Catholicos then cites an example of an Armenian church
in Georgia that collapsed due to neglect. “The most recent example of
the Georgian government’s indifference and wanton neglect resulted
in the collapse two weeks ago of the historic St. Gevork of Mughni
Armenian Church (built in 1356) in Tbilisi, Georgia; which is the
second church we have lost in this manner. This has caused great
indignation among our people and Church.”

His Holiness Karekin II ends the letter by expressing hope that the
US government “will implement the necessary steps to positively affect
this unacceptable situation.”

Note, in Jul. 2011, the Georgian parliament approved amendments to
the Civil Code that conferred legal status to religious groups in
the country.

ANKARA: Turkish Gov’t To Return Properties To Minorities

TURKISH GOV’T TO RETURN PROPERTIES TO MINORITIES

Hurriyet

Turkey

Turkish government signs a historic decree to return property taken
away from minority foundations by the 1936 proclamation. The decision
includes schools, churches, stores, houses and even nightclubs.

Surp Pırgic Armenian Hospital Foundation in Istanbul has six houses,
stores and buildings that will be returned. Other foundations are
also expecting to receive theirs. Hurriyet photo

The Turkish government has signed a historic decree to return property
taken away from minority foundations 75 years ago, a decision announced
ahead of the prime minister’s Ramadan fast-breaking dinner Sunday
with minority group representatives.

Published in the Official Gazette on Saturday and made by the order
of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the decision also states that
minority groups will be paid market value for property that was sold
to third parties.

The Treasury or the General Directorate of Foundations will be
responsible for the payments, with the amounts to be determined by
the Finance Ministry.

Under the new decree, the minority properties that were claimed in
the 1936 proclamation but had been registered as public or foundation
property will be returned to their rightful owners.

According to information obtained by the Anatolia news agency from
the General Directorate of Foundations, minority groups gave the
government a proclamation in 1936 detailing their immovable property.

However, over the years, these properties were not registered under the
minority foundations’ names, and some were even sold to third parties.

In 2008, the government took steps toward remedying this problem,
but the efforts fell short and caused some foundations to take their
cases to the European Court of Human Rights. The court ruled in
favor of the minority groups and sentenced Turkey to pay large sums
in compensation to the foundations.

‘Revolutionary’ decree

The new decree, while labeled “revolutionary” and a step toward “equal
citizenship” by the foundations’ lawyer Kezban Hatemi, is still seen as
insufficient by those who think the properties sold to third parties
should also be returned to their rightful owners.

The problem stemmed from the 1936 proclamation, and the European court
did not find it enough to define real estate by that alone, said Rıza
Turmen, a member of the main opposition Republican People’s Party,
or CHP.

Some of the property set to be returned to Armenian, Greek and Syriac
foundations include schools, churches, stores, hundreds of houses,
buildings and apartments, cemeteries, factories, and even nightclubs.

Minority foundations have 12 months to apply, with the Foundations
Assembly set to review each case before making the final decision to
return the property to its rightful owner.

American Turks appeal court’s decision on `unreliable websites’

August 27, 2011 | 01:07

The Turkish Coalition of America (TCA) has appealed a Federal Court’s
March 30th decision to dismiss the lawsuit filed by the organization
against the University of Minnesota, Armenian Weekly reports.

The lawsuit arose from materials posted on the university’s Center for
Holocaust and Genocide Studies (CHGS) website, including a list of
websites CHGS considered `unreliable’ for purposes of conducting
scholarly research.

The Turkish Coalition claimed the university violated its
constitutional rights, and committed defamation, by including the
Turkish Coalition website on the `unreliable’ websites list.

However, this March the federal court held that materials on the CHGS
website reflected the opinions of the university and its faculty
regarding the reliability of the various websites, including the
Turkish Coalition website.

The court dismissed the lawsuit, as the University website material
was protected by the principle of academic freedom, which gives the
university and its faculty a broad right to express their views and
engage in scholarly commentary and critique.

Armenian Ombudsman vs. Ministry of Education, round four

August 26, 2011 | 20:06

YEREVAN. – Armenian Ministry of Education and Science issued its
second reply to the second statement of the office of Armenian
Ombudsman on Friday.

“We could not hide our concern when reading the second statement of
the Ombudsman, hence our worst expectations come true. The situation
in Ombudsman’s office is much graver than we previously assumed.
Saying Ombudsman’s office, we did not imply mathematics, geometry or
algebra taught in our school in compliance with general educational
standards. We actually mean a mature, knowledgeable and professional
agency, which determines the degree of security each Armenian citizen
feels in his own country,” scorned Ministry officials.

“Refraining from the non-appropriate level of debate, we would like
to once again highlight the concerns expressed in our first statement.
The Ministry of Education and Science will also refrain from any means
of damaging the image of Ombudsman’s office, since it needs generous
support and attention for further establishment and progress. We
retaliate our readiness to provide professional services,” reads the
statement of Armenian Ministry of Education and Science.

Scandal continues: Armenian Ombudsman vs. Ministry of Education

August 26, 2011 | 19:22

YEREVAN. – The office of Armenian Ombudsman gave a harsh response to
the statement of the Ministry of Education and Science.

`Reflecting on the statement issued by Armenian Ministry of Science
and Education we shall do our best to ignore the demagogy typical to
the new generation of our leadership and empty qualification typical
to certain Soviet era officials.

The Ministry of Education received an in-depth description of the
registered offense, highlighting the circumstances and legal arguments
of it. A summary of this notification was made public in order to
raise awareness about the competition process, conflict of interests
as well as illegal actions of the ministry.

Instead of showing concern over the case of human rights violation and
demonstrating the ability to solve serious institutional problems, the
Ministry tries to damage the reputation of the office of Ombudsman
with low-brow evaluations and defensive attacks,” reads the statement
of Armenian Ombudsman.

10:30 – 27.08.11

The paper claims it had learnt that President Serzh Sargsyan visited
Nairi Medical Centre in Yerevan on Friday and underwent a medical
examination.

It also claims that Sargsyan visits this medical center quite
frequently and that is even a special `presidential ward’ in the
clinic.

Further, it says that it tried to get more information in president’s
health and visit, but neither the clinic nor the presidential
administration would be willing to provide some.

The paper also says that the officers at the presidential
administration recommended it to apply a written request about it or
call later.
