Eduardo Eurnekian: investing in a conflict zone is a contribution to
peace for human kind

`The burden of building the great Hayastan we talked and sang about
for decades rests on our shoulders, as much as it does on the people
of Armenia. Looking back at the past ten years, I have only feelings
of accomplishment, satisfaction, fulfillment and joy,’ American
international Airport Company Chairman Eduardo Eurnekian said when
delivering speech on Friday.

He has said he encourages the Diaspora to engage with Armenia, face
the challenges and meet its historic mission.

`Finally, I believe that investing in a conflict zone is a
contribution to peace for human kind.
It’s an exercise, which brings various parties together and translates
into a vote of confidence for the future. Remembering the past is very
important. It is also supremely important to build the future,’ said
the Argentinean-Armenian businessman.

He has expressed hope that Armenia will become the model venue, where
Armenians, Argentineans, Americans, Russians and others are able to
cooperate and build a better place for mankind.

`During my life, I have built many airports and buildings. I have made
investments all around the world. I can say one thing for certain. In
no other place nor on any other occasion have I felt as much
satisfaction and joy as my initiatives in Armenia,’ said Mr.
Eurnekian.

Mr. Eurnekian said that shortly before leaving Argentina, President
Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner confirmed to him that two bilateral
Master Technical Cooperation Agreements are completed and ready to be
signed by the Governments of Armenia and Argentina.

Argentina will provide Armenia with human and technical resources to
develop, execute and operate new water supply, distribution and
irrigation systems.

`These new initiatives will help Armenia accomplish its objective of
fully developing its agricultural potential,’ said Mr. Eurnekian.

ANKARA: PKK, Israel, and lies

PKK, Israel, and lies

by Yasin Dogan (Yalcin Akdogan)
[translated from Turkish]

The PKK issued two different statements during the current week. It
claimed that an international effort is made to use it as an
instrument. The first was related to the organization’s reaction to
Israeli Foreign Minister Lieberman’s argument that Israel might use
the PKK and the second was related to the apology the Firat News
Agency [ANF] made after it removed the report it posted on its website
on the talks that were allegedly held [between the Turkish
Ingelligence Organization and the PKK] in Oslo. It was removed from
the website within a short period after it was posted.

The two developments showed that terrorist PKK tried to create the
impression that it will not allow itself to be used. Strangely enough,
the assessments that have been made on the two statements described
Israel as the main actor and the PKK as an instrument that is being
used. The report was serviced when the Turkish delegation arrived in
Egypt, a visit which attracted significant attention. It was aimed at
weakening the Turkish Government and the MIT [Turkish Intelligence
Organization] undersecretary. Israel issued statements against him
several times in the past.

Jewish daily Yedioth pulished a report on Lieberman’s statement that
they might support the PKK against Turkey. However, it was later
denied. A high-level reaction came from the PKK to it. Stressing that
the PKK will not allow itself to be used against any country, Murat
Karayilan said: “We regret that they regard us as a tactical
instrument.” In fact, he further blamed Israel for the capture of PKK
leader Abdullah Ocalan and called for an apology.

It is understood that the disclosure of the relations between Israel
and the PKK made the organization uneasy. It had some of the Israeli
officials issue differing statements through the ANF. The statements
that were made by journalist Jonathan Spyer, former Israeli Government
expert on foreign policy, were carried by the news agency.
Furthermore, Lieberman’s statements on the PKK were described as his
personal views. While trying to save the PKK, Spyer hinted that Israel
might adopt such a policy. He said: “I do not believe that Lieberman’s
statement in Yedioth, which mentioned the Armenian Lobby and the PKK
to threatened Turkey, reflected the views of the Israeli Government.
What he said should be seen as the [personal] remarks of Foreign
Minister Lieberman. He outlined possible moves that should be made
against Turkey. If Turkey maintains its present approach against
Israel…”

BDP [Peace and Democracy Party] co-chairman Selahattin Demirtas made a
similar statement on the relations between Israel and the PKK shortly
after the disclosure that was made by the PKK on the Qandil Mountain.
Stressing that the statements that link the BDP with the PKK made him
uneasy from time to time, Demirtas moved to adopt a defensive position
as if they are the parts of the same body. He said: “The Kurdish
people will not rely on Israel or any other international force. That
is impossible. We will reject the promises Israel might make to the
Kurds because of its problems with Turkey. We will reject the
opportunities it might present to the Kurds in a golden tray and
prefer to be crushed. The freedom Israel might create will not be
freedom. We are not a movement that can sell off our fraternal
relations for the sake of international interests. Had we been such a
movement, Kurdistan would have been established a long time ago.”

The statements by the PKK on the Qandil Mountain and the BDP were due
to their fear that the people in the region might react to the hint
that Israel might use the organization. That is why the PKK adopted a
tactical approach.

The report on the alleged meeting in Oslo was posted on the pro-PKK
websites. However, it was later removed and an apology was made. The
ANF serviced the information under the title: “The Report That Will
Create a Serious Problem for Recep Tayyip Erdogan.” However, it issued
this statement after a short time: “The recording in a Dicle News
Agency [DIHA] internet report was serviced on our website this
morning. It remained posted for a short time, until the DIHA officials
warned that the it was not posted by them. They later disclosed that
it appeared on their website after a cyber attack. Consequently, the
source of the report became unknown. It was removed from our website
15 minutes after it was posted. We apologize to all those who follow
our website.”

The two developments show that the organization, fearing an
unfavourable impression in the public opinion, adopted a hesitating
approach. It is now trying to manage the situation through tactical
moves that will allow it to do harm without being harmed in return.

On the 57th birthday of assassinated Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant
Dink, the hate discourse that laid the foundation for his murder was
highlighted. CHP Malatya Deputy Veli AÄ?baba made a statement that was
not covered in the media properly. He wanted the `hate crime’ law to
be passed as soon as possible to prevent further murders. The CHP is
preparing a draft on the issue and is likely to contact the Justice
and Development Party, or AKP. The AKP wing is also sending warm
messages on this issue. If the Peace and Democracy Party, or BDP and
the Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP also supports the issue, then
Parliament can start the new term with a meaningful draft

Commandos: Despite ceaseless arming, Azeri public is not ready for a new war

arminfo
Saturday, September 17, 19:57

Despite the ceaseless arming, the Azeri public is not ready for a
new war, Major-General Arkady Ter-Tadevosyan (Commandos), a hero of
the Karabakh war, told journalists on Saturday.

“Azerbaijan continues spending huge funds on strengthening its army’s
armament, however, the military equipment is less important than the
moral spirit of people. By this criterion Armenians are much stronger.
Therefore, I think that Azerbaijan is not ready for a new war. First
and foremost, the Azeri public is not ready for a war. On the
contrary, we are ready for a war, and as a military serviceman, I am
willing to fight the aggressor in case of resumption of military
actions against the NKR. Certainly, a war is a very painful
phenomenon, but if Baku decides to unleash a war, I will go to the war
by all means”, he said.

At the same time, when touching on the latest developments in the
Karabakh peace process, Commandos stressed that though the public was
extremely unconfident in the peace process over the past half-year,
now the situation has become clear due to President Serzh Sargsyan’s
open policy in this matter.

“As regards our achievements over the 20 years since Armenia gained
independence, the main achievement is the independence. One more
achievement is that we have independent Artsakh and Armenian army”, he
said.

19:46 – 18.09.11

In the course of his tour to the South Caucasus region, French
President Nicolas Sarkozy will conduct serious negotiations over
regional conflicts, according to an Azerbaijani expert.

Speaking of Sarkozy’s upcoming visit to the South Caucasus, Mubariz
Ahmedoglu has said that that the framework of his working discussions
will cover, among other issues, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. He said
the French leader would make a statement on regional conflicts on
behalf of France, European Union and the United States.

He noted further that the discussions would focus on large-scale
economic projects as well.

`Jacque Chirak was planning economic programs with Armenia, but the
French became doubtful that Armenia supports solely Russia’s
interests. Sarkozy will attempt to oust Russia from Armenia’s economy
and realize the old projects,’ the Azerbaijani analyst said.

Sarkozy will be on a regional visit to the South Caucasus between
October 6 and 7.

Ahmadinejad calls for bolstering ties with Armenia

Ahmadinejad calls for bolstering ties with Armenia

12:10 – 18.09.11

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad asked for the development of
relations between Tehran and Yerevan, Fars News Agency reported.

Ahmadinejad has stressed that his country sees no impediment to the
expansion of its relations with Armenia.

Speaking at a meeting with Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian
in Tehran on Saturday, the Iranian leader said the two countries enjoy
abundant capacities for bolstering their relations, specially in
trade.

“Trade with neighbors is always the best (form of) trade, which is
beneficial both to the establishment and promotion of security, peace
and friendship and to the regional countries,” he was quoted as
saying.

The president further asked for a prompt expansion of relations and
cooperation with Armenia, reiterating that Iran considers no limits on
its relations with Armenia.

Alluding to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Ahmadinejad said Iran is
keen to see the world nations live in justice and amity, and if there
is any difference in opinions, it should be resolved through dialogue.
