Earthquake near Karvatchar

Today at 15:15 an earthquake with a 2.5 magnitude struck 19 km
northwest from Karvatchar city in the western zone between Armenia and
Azerbaijan.
The epicenter of the earthquake is at a depth of 10 kilometers. The
force at the epicenter was 3 points, reports the National Seismic
Defense Service of the RA Ministry of Emergency Situations.

Il ne veut pas de la Turquie
Dominique Droin milite, seul, contre le projet de rapprochement entre
Rochefort et un quartier stanbouliote.
Un homme s’intéresse autant à l’ancien Empire ottoman qu’à sa propre
influence politique (pour l’heure marginale, mais il y travaille) dans
la ville de Pierre Loti : Dominique Droin. Il vient d’adresser une
petite bafouille au maire de Rochefort : « On est loin […] de
l’image rassurante qu’a voulu donner la délégation turque que vous
avez reçue au printemps dernier. Loin des sucres d’orges et des petits
drapeaux donnés aux enfants par cette même délégation. »
L’ex-membre du MPF, candidat sur la liste de l’UMP Dominique Rabelle
aux municipales de 2008, peine à digérer le rapprochement entre le
quartier stanbouliote d’Eyüp et la cité de Colbert. Ainsi se sert-il
d’une tribune accordée à des intellectuels turcs par nos confrères du
« Monde ». Celle-ci stigmatise ce qu’il appelle « les méthodes
totalitaires utilisées par le régime turc de Tayyip Erdogan, dont l’un
des lieutenants n’est autre qu’Ismail Kavuncu, maire d’Eyüp avec qui
Rochefort est en pourparlers en vue d’un prochain jumelage. »
Cette lettre ouverte, agrémentée d’extraits de la tribune (lire par
ailleurs), n’a pas passionné son destinataire. D’ailleurs, le maire de
Rochefort semble las des mises en garde de Dominique Droin, lequel
avait déjà dégainé sur la question turque dans un numéro printanier
(et fleuri) de La Passerelle, son bulletin d’opinion. « La Turquie
reste l’un des régimes les plus corrects du Moyen-Orient », objecte
Bernard Grasset.
« C’est son affaire » « Pour l’heure, le parti islamiste au pouvoir,
modéré, n’empêche pas ce régime de figurer parmi les démocraties,
poursuit l’édile. Qu’il y ait une chasse aux sorcières, c’est une
chose, mais retenons que ce pays s’appuie sur le suffrage universel.
En Turquie, nous avons réalisé ensemble une exposition de grande
qualité sur Pierre Loti (célèbre turcophile, NDLR). Ensuite, les gens
d’Eyüp sont venus. Il n’y a rien de plus à noter. Si Dominique Droin
veut faire feu de tout bois, c’est son affaire. »
Conscient de son audace, l’ancien candidat aux municipales prie
néanmoins Bernard Grasset de « suspendre le processus de jumelage
engagé entre Rochefort et ce quartier d’Istanbul », dont le maire est
selon lui « un des membres actifs du régime mis en cause par ces
intellectuels turcs ». Pour se forger une opinion, le turcosceptique a
notamment surfé sur Internet. « On y trouve un site qui permet de voir
le maire d’Eyüp à côté du premier ministre », dit-il. Une proximité
qui n’empêchera pas Rochefort de tisser des liens avec le pays
glorifié par Loti.
À défaut d’un divorce immédiat entre Eyüp et Rochefort, l’ancien
Villiériste – qui ne s’avoue jamais vaincu, même en minorité absolue –
propose aux élus d’ici de voter pour la reconnaissance du génocide
arménien de là-bas. « Le maire d’une ville bulgare l’a déjà fait,
précise-t-il. Ipso facto, les Turcs refuseraient un rapprochement. »
Cela n’a pas échappé à Dominique Droin, le Conseil municipal se réunit
demain. Or une question aussi peu rocheforto-rochefortaise ne
risque-t-elle pas de rester à la porte de l’hôtel de ville ?

Médaille militaire à titre posthume pour Aren Simonian
le soldat arménien est mort hier matin sur le front au Haut Karabagh
Hier matin le soldat Aren Simonian mourrait au front victime d’une
balle tirée par des azéris. Le jour même, par décision du Président de
la République du Haut Karabagh Bako Sahakian remettait à titre
posthume à Aren Simonian la médaille « Mardagan dzarayoutioun »
(Service au Combat) pour actes d’héroïsme. A. Simonian était chauffeur
au sein de la division « N » et défendait les frontières du Haut
Karabagh.

Artiom Baghdassarian (81 kg), vice-champion d’Europe de judo des -23 ans
L’Arménien Artiom Baghdassarian (81 kg) est devenu vice-champion
d’Europe lors des Championnats d’Europe de judo des – 23 ans qui se
déroulent du 18 au 20 novembre à Tyumen (Russie). Parvenu brillamment
en finale, le représentant de l’Arménie s’est malheureusement incliné
face au Hongrois Christian Todh. Dans cette même catégorie des 81 kg,
un autre représentant de l’Arménie, Haïg Hampartsoumian fut éliminé
dès le premier tour des qualifications. Dans la catégorie des 73 kg,
Antranik Tchaparian et Sourig Karniguian furent également éliminés dès
leur premier combat. Au tableau des médailles l’Arménie s’est classée
6e sur 37 pays participants.

HAUT KARABAGH
Présentation du film documentaire « Les plaies du Karabagh » de
Svetana Pascaleva
Vendredi fut présenté à Erévan le DVD « Les plaies du Karabagh »
composé de plusieurs heures d’enregistrements documentaires sur la
guerre du Haut Karabagh réalisés par la journaliste Bulgare Svetana
Pascaleva. Le DVD inclut sept films documentaires uniques dans leur
genre témoignant de la guerre de libération du Haut Karabagh. Le film
contient des images uniques des combats au front, avec des fédaïs
arméniens dont beaucoup ont perdu la vie. Il retrace l’expulsion des
Arméniens de Guetachen par les troupes azéries, montre des combattants
ou des civils blessas, des villages ravagés. Le président Serge
Sarkissian a participé à la première de la présentation des films de
Svetana Pascaleva. Assistaient également Edouard Nalbandian, le chef
de la diplomatie arménienne, des députés, des représentants du
ministère de la Défense, des historiens et de nombreuses
personnalités. Sevetana Pascaleva a dit que dès son premier voyage au
Haut Karabagh elle est tombée sous le charme de son peuple et ne
pouvait rester indifférente à son sort. « Pour moi du plus jeune au
plus gé, ce sont des héros » dit la journaliste Bulgare dont le
témoignage filmé est unique pour expliquer l’histoire de la guerre de
libération du Haut Karabagh. S. Pascaleva a offert le premier
exemplaire du DVD au président arménien. Zori Balayan, l’intellectuel
et l’un des fondateurs du mouvement Karabagh a insisté sur
l’importance extrême de ce témoignage filmé de Svetana Pascaleva pour
les générations futures ainsi que pour montrer au monde la juste cause
des Arméniens du Haut Karabagh agressé sur leurs terres ancestrales.

Armenian Observatory to monitor space debris starting from next January

YEREVAN. – Program at the Byurakan Observatory with the support of
Russian Federal Space Agency to monitor space debris will start next
January, head of the Observatory Hayk Harutyunyan told the journalists
on Saturday.
The Observatory will be included in the network monitoring space
debris and the prevention of dangerous situations in the near-Earth
space. More than ten states applied for the participation in the
program held under the auspices of UN.
The project, which is initiated by Russian Federal agency
Rossotrudnichestvo (Russian State Cooperation), will be funded by
Russian Space Agency. Totally $2 million will be invested, as informed
earlier. Five small telescopes will be purchased within the framework
of the project.

Real people behind Dink’s murder must be revealed – suspect’s father

The father of one of the suspected conspirator in the murder of
Turkish-Armenian journalist Hrant Dink reported new details about his
son’s relationship with the police informers, saying that people who
are really behind the murder must be revealed, reports Hürriyet Daily
News and Economic Review.
`We learned that my son had gone off to Azerbaijan before the murder,
even though he had no passport or money,’ suspected instigator Yasin
Hayal’s father, Bahattin Hayal, told the Hürriyet Daily News.
The case will never end unless connections of police informant Erhan
Tuncel are revealed in full, he said, adding that his son was used as
a pawn.
`They stayed at a luxury hotel in Akcaabat [a district in the Black
Sea province of Trabzon]. My son was introduced to two persons in the
hotel. Erhan Tuncel had told [him] that one of these was the Chechen
chief of staff,’ Bahattin Hayal said, adding that his son’s trip to
the Akçaabat with Tuncel constituted yet another point that needed to
be further investigated.
`I am deeply saddened by this murder. I have no courage to go to Rakel
Dink [Hrant Dink’s widow]. They will not shed light on this case until
Erhan Tuncel’s connections are known. The true criminals must be
identified,’ he added. `I am not bluffing, my son was used. The court
tries him for life imprisonment, while Erhan Tuncel might get
released. I curse the day they met.’
The father argued that Yahya Öztürk, who was the chief of Trabzon
police at the time of the incident, told Hayal that his son was
serving the country and that things would be arranged so that he would
not have to serve a long sentence for any role in the murder.
Hrant Dink, a journalist of Armenian origin, was the editor-in-chief
of Istanbul based Agos weekly. He was shot in front of his office on
January 19, 2007; triggerman Ogün Samast was sentenced to 22 years in
prison in July.
Paper boxes and tyres serve as fuel for shack residents in Gyumri

The severe weather conditions in the second largest city of Gyumri
have turned out especially awesome for the people who have been living
in shacks since the 1988 devastating earthquake.
To resist the cold, those people have to burn anything that comes to
hand – tyres, paper boxes etc. But even these are no longer a
salvation to the residents of the shabby shacks whose thin walls are
not strong enough to protect them against freezing, the local TV
channel Tsayg reported.
The socially disadvantaged have lost hope in getting an apartment or
obtaining modern heating devices. All they do is to find a little fuel
for yet another day.

IRAN TO BOYCOTT MIDDLE EAST MEETING ON NUCLEAR WEAPONS

PanARMENIAN.Net – Iran will not attend a rare meeting for Middle East
countries next week to discuss efforts to free the world of nuclear
weapons, an Iranian official said, signaling worsening ties between
the UN atomic agency and Iran, Reuters reports.
Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran’s ambassador to the International Atomic
Energy Agency, made the announcement after the 35-nation governing
board of the IAEA adopted a resolution on Friday, November 18,
rebuking Tehran over its nuclear program.
Iran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons.
Soltanieh lashed out at IAEA chief Yukiya Amano, who convened the
Nov 21-22 talks in Vienna for countries in the Middle East and other
agency members, as “not professional” and said he did not believe
the meeting would be successful.
Amano issued a report last week which angered Iran by saying the
Islamic state appeared to have worked on designing a nuclear weapon
and that secret research may continue.
Soltanieh said Amano had “not even talked about Israeli nuclear
capabilities,” referring to the Jewish state’s assumed atomic arsenal.
“How can we positively respond to the invitation of Mr Amano?,”
he told reporters. “While we are a strong proponent of a nuclear
weapons-free zone we don’t think that the meeting … will be fruitful
and successful. Therefore I must say we will not participate.”
ARMENIA, BELARUS NEGOTIATE OVER FRIENDLY MATCH IN TURKEY

The Armenia and Belarusian Football teams are negotiating over a
friendly match due in Turkey next year, according to the Football
Federation of Armenia (FFA).
Sergey Safaryan, the head of the Football Federation of Belarus,
had told the Belarusian media earlier that the two countries’ teams
are scheduled to meet in Turkey on February 29, 2012.
But the FFA spokesperson told the local sports website Armsport.am
that the teams have not yet agreed over the match.
The Armenian and Belarusian national teams had played a friendly
match in Turkey in March 2010.
