Tsarukyan: Situation in all sectors is ‘extremely grave’

Panorama, Armenia

The opposition Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) leader, lawmaker Gagik Tsarukyan claims the accusations against him came after his harsh criticism of the Armenian government at the June 5 meeting of the PAP Governing Board.

Speaking at the National Assembly which is debating stripping him of his immunity from prosecution on Tuesday, Tsarukyan again voiced concerns over the persisting problems in agriculture, industry, economy, social, healthcare and all other sectors, stating the situation has not changed since the 2018 revolution.

He called for making real-life reforms, instead of creating “fake Facebook accounts which spread offensive remarks.”

He recalled his promise to stand by the new authorities two years ago. “Yes, I have signed a memorandum with [Prime Minister] Pashinyan. I have done everything possible to help make people’s expectations come true. But they were all empty and made-up promises,” he said, stressing a country cannot be ruled by “Facebook and fakes”.

“The situation in all sectors is extremely grave. You have failed the fight against the pandemic,” the opposition MP stated.

He again dismissed the allegations of vote buying by his party during the 2017 parliamentary elections.

“I have told you, I won’t step back from my principles. Are you afraid now when you have opened a case against Tsarukyan? You have shut down the highways in the regions to prevent people from coming here,” he said.

Turkish press: Attacker tears down cross at Armenian church in Istanbul – Turkey News

An unidentified attacker has dismantled a cross outside an Armenian church in Istanbul’s historical Kuzguncuk neighborhood.

Security footage delivered to the police showed the attack occurred on May 23 in the Üsküdar district, according to a statement made by the Surp Krikor Lusaroviç Armenian Church.

The management said they have lodged a criminal complaint about the incident and have placed the cross back in its place.

Garo Paylan, a Turkish-Armenian lawmaker for the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), condemned the incident, calling it a hate crime.

“Attacks continue on our churches. The cross of our Surp Krikor Lusaroviç Armenian Church was removed and thrown away. Hate speech made by the ruling power normalizes hate crimes,” he said in a tweet.

On May 9, another Armenian church in Istanbul’s Bakırköy district, once home to Istanbul’s now dwindling Armenian community, was also attacked. The man who attempted to set the church’s gate on fire was detained.

Articles about Azerbaijan’s anti-Armenian and aggressive policy published in The Washington Times

 12:54,

YEREVAN, MAY 26, ARMENPRESS. Artcile by Aram Hamparian, Executive Director of the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), titled “Azerbaijan Stands In Way Of Peace”, has been published in The Washington Times on May 24.

On May 25 the American newspaper published another article, this time by American-Armenian public figure, human rights advocate Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte, which was titled “Azerbaijan Tramples Human Rights”.

In his article, ANCA Executive Director Aram Hamparian says the Armenian side fully backs the Royce-Engel peace proposal, a bipartisan U.S. congressional initiative to deploy internationally monitored gunfire locators and add international observers along the line of contact. “It is Azerbaijan — and Azerbaijan alone — that is blocking these common-sense measures to promote transparency, precisely because it fears facing accountability for its ceasefire violations. It’s simple logic: Only the party initiating attacks would oppose the use of technology that identifies the ceasefire violator”, Hamparian said, adding: “Azerbaijan’s rejection of the Royce-Engel peace proposal represents the height of irresponsibility, raising the risk of a regional war amid a global pandemic”.

Let us remind that back to October 26, 2015 Chairman of the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs Edward Royce and 85 members of various parties addressed a letter to US Co-Chair of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick, proposing to place OSCE-monitored, advanced gunfire-locator systems and sound-ranging equipment to determine the source of attacks along the Nagorno Karabakh line of contact.

Commenting on the propaganda article published by the Azerbaijani Ambassador to the US, Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte in her article says she was born in Azerbaijan, and states that “Mr. Suleymanov does not write about Azerbaijan as we both know it, because he is a mouthpiece for a dictator”.

“Thirty years ago 350,000 Armenians lived in Azerbaijan, and many of them were murdered, maimed and/or raped. All were exiled. As a proud American and an elected official in the great state of Maine, I live and breathe the ideals of this country, and with those I vehemently reject Mr. Suleymanov’s blatant lies, anti-Armenianism and shameless propaganda.

The truth is that in today’s Azerbaijan there is no evidence of Armenian culture due to the systematic policy of ethnic cleansing and history erasure. In response to the Artsakh’s democratic movement of self-determination, everyone I knew was exiled, if not killed. My grandparents’ graves in Baku were destroyed, as were all Armenian cemeteries in Azerbaijan. My neighbors were killed, my relatives beaten. I was physically attacked at age 11”, the human rights advocate says.

She added that the lone Armenian church in Baku is a stark reminder of Azerbaijan’s true face. The Christian crosses of the church were removed.

The guise of a tolerant Azerbaijan is contradicted by U.S. State Department warning against any Armenians — even American citizens — visiting Azerbaijan. The newly released 2020 report of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom recommends that Azerbaijan be added to the State Department’s special watchlist for severe violations of religious liberty.

The main obstacle to peace in the region is Azerbaijan. The ambassador’s op-ed is a desperate effort to distract attention from Azerbaijan’s continued gross human-rights violations towards Artsakh, Armenia and its own people. It is a confirmation for the people of Artsakh that the path of freedom and self-determination has no alternative. It is simply self-preservation”, Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte said.

New president of Nagorno-Karabakh takes office

JAM News

    JAMnews. Yerevan

The inauguration of Arayik Harutyunyan, who was elected president of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, took place on May 21 in the city of Shushi. The top leadership of Armenia was also present at the ceremony.

The ceremony was held in the city of Shushi, in the hall of the Cultural and Youth Center.

Harutyunyan promised ‘to ensure the sovereignty, territorial integrity and security of Nagorno-Karabakh.’

On March 31, both presidential and parliamentary elections were held in Nagorno-Karabakh. Then, according to the Central Election Commission, not one of the 14 presidential contenders won the necessary 50 percent or more votes for the final victory.

Two weeks later on April 14, the second round of elections took place, and Arayik Harutyunyan was elected after winning a majority of votes.

The new president will have significantly more powers than his predecessors. In 2017, a new constitution was adopted in Karabakh, according to which the republic switched from a semi-presidential form of government to a presidential one.

As for the parliamentary elections, 12 political forces participated in them. Of these, 1 block and 4 parties entered the new parliament.

Voters again gave the majority of votes to the bloc of former Prime Minister Arayik Harutyunyan.

The Free Homeland / United Civil Alliance bloc received 40.4 percent.

The Democratic Party, United Homeland, Justice, ARF Dashnaktsutyun will also be represented in parliament.

On May 21, a new chairman of parliament was also elected – an MP from the ruling faction Arthur Tovmasyan.

The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, inhabited by Armenians, exists as a de facto independent republic, not recognized by any state in the world, including Armenia.

In 1991-1994, a war was fought on the territory of the former Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region of Azerbaijan and the surrounding areas.  It ended with the signing of a truce, but skirmishes periodically continue. After the military phase of the conflict, ethnic Azerbaijanis left Karabakh. Azerbaijan considers Karabakh and the territories around it occupied during the war occupied, and demands their return. Negotiations to resolve the conflict through international mediation have so far failed. The last outbreak of full-scale hostilities – the so-called “April war”, or “four-day war”, occurred in April 2016. As a result, dozens of people died on both sides.
