YEREVAN, MAY 23, ARMENPRESS. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan says he believes Armenia has one problem in agriculture, and the problem is the issue of knowledge.

“If we solve the issues raised by the farmers, nevertheless it won’t solve the important issue. Why, because one year the harvest will be a lot more than needed and this will result in prices of the harvest decreasing so much that the farmer won’t have income, one year the harvest will be less, so less that the farmer will again not have income, then one other year there will be hailstorms, freezing temperatures, all these are equal problems. The issue is the following, what is the solution of this problem. I maintain my opinion that the solution is the change of mentality,” Pashinyan said after touring agricultural businesses in Ararat Province.

He also highlighted the need for changing the culture of land cultivation because the existing culture won’t allow farmers to get rich and prosper.

“Modern-day farmers aren’t thinking how much harvest they will have, they are planning how much they need for the volume to be manageable. The harvest in the intensive gardens of the modern world are not depending on weather or other factors, they depend on planning,” Pashinyan said.

“We must switch to modern farming technologies, intensive gardening, business-model based agriculture, consolidation of lands, and this must be our strategy”.

Pashinyan said he notices progress as farmers themselves are admitting that there is an issue of knowledge and skills.

2nd manifestation of Turkish denialism – Pontic (Greek) Genocide

YEREVAN, MAY 19, ARMENPRESS. Today, on May 19, the Greeks honor the memory of the victims of the genocide against the Pontic Greeks by the Ottoman Empire and its successor the Republic of Turkey in the period of 1916-1922.

Simultaneous to the Armenian Genocide the Turkish government launched a campaign of eliminating other non-Muslim ethnicity living in the country. By the way, witnessing the massacres and mass deportations of the Armenian people, the Pontic Greeks started forming the first guerrilla groups for self-defense. Turkish anti-Christian campaign continued during the upcoming years as well. According to various estimates, 300-350 Greeks were killed in Pontus as a result of the Turkish policy, while a small number of survivors found shelter in Greece and other parts of the world.

Everybody has heard about the Smyrna Massacre, and the policy against the non-Muslims in 1940s. Relying on previous experience, the Turks formed labor battalions for eliminating the Greeks. They also launched the large-scale operation of assimilation. In 1953-55 the Turkish government carried out massacres of Greeks in Imbros, Tenedos and Istanbul.

Istanbul pogroms of Greeks in September 1955 were another demonstration of anti-Greek policy, after which the Greeks started to abandon ancient Byzantine capital. The Cyprus invasion of 1974 and the massacres following it once again showed that the Turks do not tolerate any kind of Greek presence.

At the same time it shoud be noted that these Turkish acts, like in the case of the Armenian Genocide, never recieved adequate international reaction. In 1994 the parliament of Greece declared May 19, the day when Kemal Atatürk landed in Samsounda city, the Greek-Pontic Genocide Remembrance Day.

Simultaneous to the debates on criminalization of the Armenian Genocide denial, the launch of the campaign for the international recognition of the massacres of Greeks was extremely unwanted for Turks. The activities of the Greek authorities in that direction have always been reacted nervously.

24 years ago, on April 25 1996, the issue of the recognition and condemnation of the Armenian Genocide entered the agenda of the Greek parliament  with the formulation of declaring April 24 the day of remembrance of the Armenian Genocide by Turkey. It was mentioned during the debates that the Armenian Genocide ”was one of the 1st steps taken in the direction of pan-Turkism and pan-Turanianism. The genocide and elimination of the Hellenic element of Pontus was followed by the elimination of the Greek element in Constantinople, Imbros, Tendos, the criminal invasion of Cyprus and its barbaric conquest, and today the elimination of the Kurds, Turkey’s threats against its neighbors and the usurpation of lands”.

I published an article in ”Yerkir” weekly in 2006, saying ”Armenia should be one of the 1st to adopt a legal document adequately condemning the Greek massacres… In general, Armenia should be the initiator of recognitions and condemnations of genocides at international arenas, since crimes against humanity are issues touching each member of the international community and the indifference stemming from some political calculations, which Armenia has been facing in terms of the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, should never become part of Armenia’s official policy”.

On March 24, 2015 Armenia officially recognized the genocide of Pontic Greeks. The joint efforts against the Turkish denialism is important, and it’s important first of all for the Turkish society, since only justice can set free from the chains of the past.

Years ago, during the debates on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide the late Prime Minister of Greece Stefanos Stefanopoulos said, ”The unfortunate Jewish people had the luck to see Willy Brandt on his kneels at one of the concentration camps, I think in Auschwitz, publicly apologizing from the international community and humanity. Is there anyone here or across the world that can believe that Demirel or any other Turkish president or prime minister can ever kneel down for the same reason on the banks of the Euphrates, in the gorges of Erzurum or Kharberd and apologise from the humanity for the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians, given the fact that Turkey pre-occupied with its nationalistic and chauvinistic delirium, distorting the history and mocking the victims of its own policy, raised a monument dedicated to the memory of Turks slaughtered by Armenians”.

And today this rhetoric question is still relevant not only for the recognition of the Armenian Genocide, but also for the Pontic Genocide.

Postscriptum

During the debates on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide one of the Greek parliamentarians said, ”The 1st court against genocide took place in 405 B.C. It was the trial of Lampsacus one year before the end of the Peloponnesian War. At that time the Athenians had declared that if the Spartans and their allies are defeated, they will cut off the right hand of each of their enemies, and moreover, a week before they had drowned in Aegean Sea, the allies of the Spartans –  Corinthians and the population of Andros. But when following the defeat of the Athenian navy Athenian Admiral Philocles was arrested, Lysander asked him what punishment he thinks he deserve, Philocles answered, ”Deal out the exact same punishment you would have suffered had you been defeated”.

This was the 1st Nuremberg iin the history of humanity…

Oppositionist: Refusing to accept our proposals, "My step" follows the path of its predecessors

Arminfo, Armenia
May 8 2020

ArmInfo.Refusing to accept our proposals, colleagues from the “My Step” bloc follow the path beaten by their predecessors, member of the Bright Armenia parliamentary  faction Taron Simonyan expressed a similar opinion to ArmInfo.

The parliamentarian considers the legacy of the past to be the main  reason for the refusal to accept the opposition’s proposals.  According to him, the former authorities had the same attitude to the  legislative initiatives of the opposition. A similar principle,  according to the opposition, is fundamentally wrong and its results  are visible today.

“Almost all of our proposals instantly run into opposition from the  majority. However, they do not even delve into the essence of the  proposals, even the essence of the reasons for their own opposition.   Meanwhile, the consideration and adoption of these proposals proceeds  from their own interests, since the state needs it. Our proposals  don’t have one-sided interest. They are based on the results of  research, which, in theory, any thinking authority should come to,  “he said.

According to Simonyan, the Bright Armenia has been constantly stating  in the parliament the past year and a half about serious problems in  the law enforcement system. And in due time the government didn’t  even want to discuss the faction’s proposals for reforming the  government structure within the framework of the government’s  program. And started to discuss this option only this year.  Meanwhile, if the reform process had begun last year, this year the  authorities would not have encountered any related problems.

“Today I don’t understand at all the position of the authorities. We  proposed to start reforming practically all fields of state  administration immediately after the revolution. The revolutionary  situation, the atmosphere was more than ever favorable for the  introduction, implementation of new ideas, approaches and changes.  Today the situation is gradually freezing, and reforming the state  apparatus is becoming more and more difficult over time, “he said.

According to Simonyan, it is never too late to initiate reforms, but  2 years ago it was much easier to do.  Today, the process has become  more complicated due to an increase in the system’s resilience to  these reforms. Recalling that Prime Minister Pashinyan himself  periodically talks about this, the parliamentarian described this  course of events as quite natural, noting that the more reforms are  delayed, the more internal resistance to these reforms increases.

Mystery surrounding family of former Armenian ‘super-minister’

JAMnews, Yerevan

Businessman Gurgen Khachatryan, chairman of the Board of Directors at the telecommunications company Ucom, and also co-founder of the Galaxy group, has gone on the run after becoming the central figure of a criminal investigation in Armenia.

The authorities accuse Khachatryan of abusing his position of power and embezzling an especially large sum of money.

It is still unknown exactly what section of the law he is being charged under. But it’s already clear that the charge against Gurgen Khachatryan is connected with the activities of his father, former Minister of Finance and head of the State Revenue Committee Gagik Khachatryan.

According to the investigation, Gagik Khachatryan’s sons created a company that won public tenders for information technology services with practically no competition, as they were helped by the structures headed by their father.

Gagik Khachatryan himself was arrested on charges of abuse of power and embezzlement on an especially large scale.

Now both father and son are accused of embezzling $3,000,000 in budgetary funds and of receiving a bribe in the amount of $22,000,000.

Gurgen Khachatryan says that the authorities are just trying to confiscate his Ucom shares.

Before he went into hiding, Gurgen Khachatryan publicly stated that the persecution was unlawful and said that he was being pressured “at the state level”.

On May 3, the court decided to arrest Khachatryan. But the court’s decision has not yet been implemented, as soon after, the defendant disappeared. The National Security Service of Armenia let him slip away.

Details on the accusations

On May 4, the National Security Service put Gurgen Khachatryan on the wanted list.

The report on the case gives specific figures of the damage caused to the state by the Khachatryan family.

Over the course of 12 years, from 2008 to 2020, the company entered into many profitable contracts.

In particular, as is stated in the National Security Service, the company purchased 19 “software modules at high prices.”

They cost the state 4,283,580,000 drams (about $8,000,000). Investigators say the real value was 2,777,410,417 drams ($ 4,500,000).

Investigators believe that the 1,506,169,583-dram discrepancy ($3,000,000) went straight into the pockets of the official’s sons.

To hide the source of the money and to launder it, the entire amount was cashed and transferred to Ucom through a third party.

In 2011, $22,400,000 was transferred to the account associated with the Khachatryans, and to conceal the transaction, the amount was written off as two loan agreements.

Khachatryan’s lawyers insist that these were indeed loans, that their term has not yet expired, and that the amount is subject to repayment.

The role of the Ucom company

Gurgen Khachatryan and his family own the majority of the shares in this telecom company.

On April 10, the founders of Ucom, brothers Hayk and Alexander Yesayan, voiced their disagreement with the development strategy pursued by other shareholders. This referred mostly to the Khachatryan family, although the company also has other shareholders with a smaller percentage of the shares.

The Yesayan Brothers themselves own only 6% of the shares. They tried to buy back the other 94% of the shares in order to gain control of the company. Having been refused, both resigned from their management positions within the company.

After some time, Gurgen Khachatryan stated that people were trying to take the company away from him and threatening to arrest him, and demanded that international organizations to look into his case:

“I was told very clearly that if I do not agree, they will accuse me of committing a particularly serious crime and arrest me. And then they will do the same to by my brother, other family members, relatives and loved ones.”

Gurgen Khachatryan did not specify who exactly was giving these threats.

However, a spokesman for the prime minister responded to his statement immediately.

On her Facebook page, Mane Gevorgyan wrote that the Khachatryan family had previously expressed their willingness to return the stolen funds.

“Gagik Khachatryan and his sons led the corrupt mafia system operating in Armenia for many years, as a result of which they illegally accumulated several hundred million dollars in state funds,” wrote Gevorgyan.

She says that because of this, if Gurgen Khachatryan sells his shares, the government believes that he should transfer the entire sum to the state budget of Armenia as compensation for the damage caused to the state during the years of his father’s work.

Where could Gurgen Khachatryan be hiding?

Khachatryan’s lawyers say that they do not know where Gurgen Khachatryan has hidden. At the moment, leaving Armenia is no simple task, as the borders were closed after the state of emergency was declared due to the coronavirus.

Armenia ex-official: Nikol Pashinyan is keeping silent after Lavrov’s statement Armenia ex-official: Nikol Pashinyan is keeping silent after Lavrov’s statement

18:29, 28.04.2020

Nikol is keeping silent after Lavrov made his statement. This is what Armenia’s ex-deputy minister of national security Gurgen Yeghiazaryan told reporters today.

“The statement by Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov should be treated much more seriously. Instead of talking about less important topics live on Facebook, Nikol Pashinyan should have touched upon Lavrov’s statement today, if what Lavrov stated is inaccurate. Pro-government presses are discrediting Lavrov, but they don’t understand what this can lead to,” Yeghiazaryan said.

According to him, Armenia needs to pay attention to the articles released by Azerbaijani presses today. “Azerbaijani presses are starting to touch upon in-depth issues such as the negotiations over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and it seems as though they are proving that the negotiations are being held through a phased approach. We know that we will fail as a state through phased negotiations. All this is leading Armenia to a war. Nikol Pashinyan has stated different opinions over time. This means he is lying everytime,” he said.

According to Yeghiazaryan, Pashinyan has been assigned to destroy Russian-Armenian relations, and the decision to not release second President of Armenia Robert Kocharyan is linked to his personal revenge.
