Turkish Press: Turkey slams French move on 1915 Armenian events

Foreign ministry spokesman says France should introspect before lecturing others about genocides and massacres

By Emre Aytekin

ANKARA

Turkish foreign ministry spokesman Wednesday said Ankara could not be lectured by France which is notorious for atrocities committed during the colonial period in Africa.

Hami Aksoy’s remarks came after French President Emmanuel Macron’s declaration of April 24 as a national day marking the so-called Armenian genocide.

“We have no lessons to take from the arrogant French politicians who are ignorant [of basic history], which we know for the atrocities it committed in Anatolia while using the Armenians during the Independence War period, massacres in Algeria and the genocide in Rwanda,” Aksoy said, responding to a question in the Foreign Ministry building.

Aksoy went on to say that Ankara repeatedly told French officials, especially Macron, that the 1915 incidents should be discussed in the light of judicial, historical and academic angles; however, Macron ignored historical facts and decisions by the European Court of Human Rights and the French Constitutional Court.

He added that the main motive of Macron was to appeal to the Armenian voters in a bid to fulfill the promise he had previously made.

Emphasizing that an objective approach was essential to understand the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in which more than 500,000 Muslims were killed by the Armenian rioters, Aksoy said that the Turkish offer to establish a joint historical commission to shed light on the incident was still applicable.

Turkey’s position is that the deaths of Armenians in eastern Anatolia in 1915 took place when some sided with invading Russians and revolted against Ottoman forces. A subsequent relocation of Armenians resulted in numerous casualties.

Ankara does not accept the alleged genocide, but acknowledges that there were casualties on both sides during the events of World War I.

Turkey objects to the presentation of the incidents as “genocide” but describes the 1915 events as a tragedy for both sides.

Ankara has repeatedly proposed the creation of a joint commission of historians from Turkey and Armenia plus international experts to tackle the issue.

Brussels: Asylum and Immigration – Khmoyan family not sent back to Armenia

Asylum and Immigration – Khmoyan family not sent back to Armenia

           Sunday, 02:20

The Khmoyan family was not deported to Armenia on Saturday after all.

“The flight has been cancelled,” the family’s lawyer Bruno Soenen announced on Friday evening. He didn’t reveal why the flight had been cancelled.

The family, two parents and two children aged eight and two, arrived in Belgium in 2009. An asylum request they submitted was refused and the family went into hiding after a failed deportation attempt in 2014.

The family was found in Borgerhout (Antwerp) on the 8th of January and they were taken to the 127bis detention centre at Steenokkerzeel.

A child psychiatrist diagnosed “early signs of an identity crisis and narcissism, plus signs of insecurity” in the oldest daughter Anna-Maria. These problems will get worse and worse as the family spends more time in detention.

On Thursday, their lawyer was told they would be deported on Saturday. Mr Soenen said that news put the young girl under yet more stress.

Now that the flight has been cancelled, the family will be moved to an open centre on Monday.

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 2, ARMENPRESS. Armenian Healthcare Minister Arsen Torosyan has ordered to provide 30,000 doses of measles vaccinations to Georgia in order “for our neighbor country to more effectively and faster struggle with the measles outbreaks”.

Minister of Healthcare Arsen Torosyan said on Facebook that he has spoken with his Georgian counterpart Davit Sergeenko about the outbreaks yesterday. “He informed me that 1028 new cases of measles have been detected until today, which is mostly associated with the fact that many children in the 90s were not vaccinated against measles. I was also informed that the daily detected 50-60 cases  have dropped to a daily of 35, thanks to the anti-pandemic actions that are being carried out in Georgia, including the intensive vaccinations of the population aged 20-40,” Torosyan said on Facebook.

According to Torosyan, the last confirmed case of measles in Armenia was back in 2007 – due to the high indicator of anti-measles vaccinations. “The last imported case was detected in December of 2018 in a passenger who arrived from Russia, and fortunately it did not spread in our country. I call on everyone to get the vaccinations envisaged by the national immunization program, and in case of having symptoms – contact a doctor,” he said.

The measles outbreak in Georgia is mostly centralized in Tbilisi.

BERLIN, February 1. /TASS/. Resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh issue requires much time and both parties to the conflict must be ready to search for a solution, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said at a joint press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Friday.

“There is no way that only one party shows goodwill, it should come from both parties,” Merkel said. “I think there is a long road ahead. We believe that the Minsk process should continue and the OSCE should have opportunities to use its tools,” she added.

Nagorno-Karabakh conflict

The highland region of Nagorno-Karabakh (or Mountainous Karabakh) is a mostly Armenian-populated enclave inside Azerbaijan’s territory. It is a self-proclaimed independent republic, not recognized by any of the United Nations member states

In 1988, hostilities broke out there between the forces reporting to the Baku government and Armenian residents. In 1994, a ceasefire was reached but relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia has remained strained ever since.

Azerbaijan insists that its territorial integrity be restored and refugees return to Nagorno-Karabakh, which will create conditions for talks on the region’s status. Baku is ready to grant autonomy to the region but is unwilling to hold direct talks with Nagorno-Karabakh. At the same time, Armenia strongly opposes the region’s reunification with Azerbaijan and says that its right to self-determination should be considered.

Russia, France and the United States co-chair the OSCE Minsk Group, which seeks to broker an end to the conflict. The Group also includes Azerbaijan, Armenia, as well as Belarus, Germany, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Sweden, Finland and Turkey.

Bright Armenia urges Foreign Ministry to summon Kazakhstan envoy Bright Armenia urges Foreign Ministry to summon Kazakhstan envoy

12:18, 07.01.2019

YEREVAN. – Bright Armenia party leader Edmon Marukyan urged the Armenian Foreign Ministry to summon the ambassador of Kazakhstan to ask for explanations regarding the incident in the city of Karaganda.

Hundreds of Kazakhs took part in a protest in Karaganda, after the murder of a 23-year-old Kazakh in this city. Three local Armenians are suspects in the murder.

“After the murder on New Year’s Eve in Kazakhstan’s Karaganda, the situation is gradually becoming uncontrollable and explosive, keeping our compatriots alarmed and threatening their safety and security. Preliminary observations show that the Azerbaijanis have succeeded in provoking this dispute by turning it into an anti-Armenian action,” Marukyan said in a statement.

An investigation on suspicion of inciting ethnic and religious hatred has been launched.

“In this situation we call on the Armenian Foreign Ministry to summon the ambassador of Kazakhstan to ask for explanations regarding the recent developments in Karaganda and get assurances that official Astana is doing its best to protect the rights, safety and property of our compatriots and to prevent the threats,” Marukyan added.
