ANKARA: Obama infuriates Armenian diaspora

Obama infuriates Armenian diaspora

U.S. President Obama refrained from using the term `genocide’ during
his address in remembrance of the victims from the incidents that
transpired in 1915.

Ceremonies were held in the Armenian capital of Yerevan to commemorate
the events that transpired in 1915 on April 24th, the day Armenian’s
have specifically designated for remembrance. During an address at the
official ceremony in the capital, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan
stated, “2015 commemorates not only the 100th anniversary of the
Armenian Genocide; it will also commemorate the anniversary of our
memory and our resolve to live for thousands of years more.”

U.S. President Barack Obama continued his tradition of refraining from
referring to the incident as genocide and instead used the Armenian
term ‘Meds Yeghern’ which translates to ‘Great Disaster’.
He also called for “a full, frank, and just acknowledgement of the
facts” about the history, saying that “moving forward with the future
cannot be done without reckoning with the facts of the past.”

‘WE HONOR THE MEMORY’
During his annual April 24th address Obama stated: “We honor the
memory of the 1.5 million Armenians who were brutally massacred or
marched to their deaths in the waning days of the Ottoman Empire. A
full, frank and just acknowledgement of the facts is to everyone’s
benefit. Moving forward with the future cannot be done without
reckoning with the facts of the past.”

Obama Nominates Richard Morningstar As Ambassador To Azerbaijan

WASHINGTON, DC. April 27, 2012: U.S. President Barack Obama is to
nominate Richard Morningstar as ambassador to Azerbaijan.

Morningstar is the secretary of state’s special envoy for Eurasian energy.

He also served as U.S. ambassador to the European Union between 1999 and 2001.

Morningstar would replace Mathew Bryza, who left the post in January
after serving about a year as a special appointment of Obama.

Bryza’s nomination was never confirmed by the U.S. Senate due to
opposition by Armenian-American lobbying groups and several senators,
who accused Bryza of having a pro-Azerbaijani bias and questionable
ties to Azerbaijani officials (RFE/RL).

Yakunin Takes Part In Opening Of Zamanlinsky Bridge In Armenia

YAKUNIN TAKES PART IN OPENING OF ZAMANLINSKY BRIDGE IN ARMENIA

SKRIN Market & Corporate News
April 25, 2012 Wednesday 10:53 AM GMT

Vladimir Yakunin, President of Russian Railways, took part in the
opening ceremony of the new Zamanlinsky Bridge (Viaduct) in Armenia
on Saturday, 21 April 2012. Yakunin was in Armenia on a working
trip to the South Caucasus Railways. Also attending the opening were
Serzh Sargsyan, the President of Armenia, and Vyacheslav Kovalenko,
Russia’s ambassador to Armenia.

The reconstruction of Zamanlinsky Bridge has been underway since 2010
as part of the investment programme of South Caucasus Railways to
revitalise the railways and improve infrastructure. The new bridge,
to be operated by South Caucasus Railways, was built near the historic
Zamanlinsky Viaduct and is 216.86 metres long and 42.89 metres high.

“These objects are Armenian achievements which will serve the people.

Our joint work can serve as a good example of cooperation between
Russia and Armenia in all social and economic sectors,” said Yakunin
at the ceremony.

The reconstruction of Zamanlinsky Bridge is another step towards
developing the infrastructure on South Caucasus Railways and
improving its effectiveness. The bridge will play an essential role
in growing Armenia’s economy, creating the necessary conditions for
the integration of Armenia into the Eurasian transport system and
strengthening cooperation with the country’s partners in foreign
markets.

According to Vladimir Yakunin, the construction of the bridge has
become one of the largest projects implemented in Armenia within the
framework of the investment programme at Russian Railways.

Since Russian Railways assumed the management of Armenian Railways
in June 2008 following a concessionaire agreement, the Company has
invested around 6 billion roubles in the development of the railways
and will invest a further 1.1 billion roubles in 2012.

The construction of Zamanlinsky Viaduct (bridge) across the left branch
of the river Debed in the Lori region was one of the most difficult
stages in the construction of the Tbilisi-Kars railway line, with the
assembly, transportation and installation of the girders and trusses
on the piers proving to be the most time consuming work.

Preparations for the construction of the “Viaduct across Zamanlu
ravine,” as the bridge was called in the Russian Empire’s official
documents, started in 1895, when forest clearing began in the
vicinity of the future construction site, steps were taken to ban
the cultivation of land allocated to the railways, and the process
of buying out the gardens of the local peasants commenced.

Zamanlinsky viaduct is situated at the 129th kilometre on the
Tbilisi-Kars Railway Line and was completed in October 1898, with
the first train successfully crossing it the same month. The bridge
is the oldest railway bridge in Armenia, and was also the highest
railway bridge in Tsarist Russia at the time of its construction.

Iranian Armenians Mark April 24

IRANIAN ARMENIANS MARK APRIL 24

Mehr News Agency (MNA)
April 24, 2012 Tuesday

TEHRAN, April 24 (MNA) – Iranian Armenians gathered in front of
a church in central Tehran on Tuesday to mark the April 24 which
coincided with the 97th anniversary of what they call the “Armenian
genocide” by Ottoman Empire during World War I. Historians say
about 1.5 million Armenians, including women and children, were
either killed or died of starvation or disease between 1915 and
1923. The Armenians who congregated inside and outside the church
in Ostad Nejatollahi Street issued a statement in which they said,
“We want the Turkish government to accept the Armenian genocide as a
historical and undeniable fact by the then Turkish government.” Turkey
strongly denies the genocide allegations. Turkey argues 300,000 to
500,000 Armenians and at least as many Turks died in civil strife
when Armenians rose up against their Ottoman rulers and sided with
invading Russian troops. PA/PA END MNA

Congresswoman Jackie Speier Statement On The Armenian Genocide

CONGRESSWOMAN JACKIE SPEIER STATEMENT ON THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE

Targeted News Service
April 25, 2012 Wednesday 2:23 AM EST

Rep. Jackie Speier, Enhanced D-Calif., (12th CD) issued the following
news release:

Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) released the
following statement on the day of The Armenian Genocide Observance
hosted by the Congressional Armenian Issues Caucus.

“Today we commemorate the 97th Anniversary of the systematic
annihilation of over 1.5 million Armenian men, women, and children;
the first genocide of the 20th Century. Millions were killed, cultural
and religious landmarks were destroyed, atrocities were committed
again and again while pleas for help were ignored.

“Nearly one hundred years after the Armenian Genocide, Congress has
shamefully failed to pass a resolution that would officially recognize
the attempt by Ottoman leaders to extinguish the Armenian people.

Without this resolution and its direct condemnation of the horrific
acts against an entire ethnicity, we implicitly ignore the crimes
that were committed. This is an inexcusable affront to history.

“If any lesson can be learned from the Armenian Genocide it is that
as Americans, we cannot dismiss calls for aid from victimized groups
that are powerless over their oppressors. To honor the memory of
those who perished at the hands of the Ottoman Empire, we must renew
our pledge to fight human injustices around the globe.”

Yesterday, President Obama announced the formal establishment of
the Atrocities Prevention Board which would help coordinate a more
effective and cohesive response by senior U.S. officials across
various agencies. He said, “Remembrance without resolve is a hollow
gesture. Awareness without action changes nothing. In this sense,
‘never again’ is a challenge to us all — to pause and to look within.”

Poverty Is The Main Enemy Of Armenian Society, Serzh Sargsyan Is Sur

POVERTY IS THE MAIN ENEMY OF ARMENIAN SOCIETY, SERZH SARGSYAN IS SURE

ARMENPRESS
APRIL 26, 2012
NOYEMBERYAN

NOYEMBERYAN, APRIL 26, ARMENPRESS: The main enemy of our society
is poverty, and we cannot be indifferent to that issue, Chairman of
Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), President Serzh Sargsyan told the
residents of Noyemberyan town in frame of the campaign. As Armenpress
reports, the RPA Chairman stressed that the key to solution of the
poverty is in the joint work and mutual trust.

“The local residents are singled out for their diligence and
preservation of national characteristics. But it is pity that the
money some people earn is not enough for meeting their family needs.

For this purpose we try to encourage businessmen to make investments
in remote regions of Armenia,” said Serzh Sargsyan, adding that it will
contribute to the growth of the country’s economic indexes and opening
of working places for the residents of remote regions of Armenia.

“Sure, we want the issues to find a solution in one day. But we do not
have such a magical receipt and nobody has. But we have an idea that
will work in the upcoming 5 years. In numerous developed countries of
the world that process has taken decades, as that path is tortuous and
complicated. To our happiness, we have already passed the main – most
complicated part,” said RPA leader, noting that the most part of those
programs are underway, and the others need relevant investments. “We
believe that we will manage to accomplish them,” he underlined.

Within the frameworks of the election campaign in Tavush province,
Serzh Sargsyan also met with the population of Vazashen, Aygehovit,
Sarigyugh and Varagavan communities.
