YEREVAN. – The key issue for most Armenian businessman MPs is
multiplying their wealth and keeping it, Chorrord Inknishkhanutyun
(CI) daily writes.

“Specifically, businessman MPs Samvel Aleksanyan, Ruben Hayrapetyan,
Karo Karapetyan (Karo of Juve), and Harutyun Gharagyozyan (Harut
of Caramel) are not ‘inactive.’ According to CI’s information,
these [parliamentary] mandate holders are attempting to establish
[businesses] in [Russia’s] City of Sochi by putting their business
ties to work

According to the same news, Karo of Juve’s and Harut of Caramel’s
business interests in this city are primarily connected with the export
and production of alcoholic beverages. Aleksanyan and Hayrapetyan,
on the other hand, wish to build a large sports complex either in
Sochi or in Saki cities.

CI tried to hear all sides. But their cell phones were silent. And
[Football Federation of Armenia] FFA President Ruben Hayrapetyan said:
‘I do not give interviews over the phone.’

To add, Hayrapetyan was not in the city [i.e., Yerevan] and his cell
[phone] was switched to roaming [service],” Chorrord Inknishkhanutyun
writes.

American-Based Armenian Danny Tarkanian Edges Out Cegavske In CD4 Ra

AMERICAN-BASED ARMENIAN DANNY TARKANIAN EDGES OUT CEGAVSKE IN CD4 RACE

tert.am
14.06.12

In a race that will likely determine his political future, Danny
Tarkanian nosed his way to victory in a crowded Republican primary,
winning the chance to take on Democrat Steven Horsford in Nevada’s
newest congressional district, The Las Vegas Sun reports.

Despite waging a tough campaign from a sizeable financial deficit,
state Sen. Barbara Cegavske was unable to overcome Tarkanian’s ironclad
name recognition throughout the district, which stretches from North
Las Vegas through the state’s southern rural counties.

Cegavske, a conservative state senator, relied on a targeted voter
identification campaign that propelled her to victory in Clark County.

But Tarkanian crushed Cegavske in the rural counties, indicating her
much weaker turnout effort in that part of the district.

Tarkanian, a Las Vegas lawyer and businessman, has staked his political
future on this campaign, saying he likely wouldn’t be able to run
again after four straight losses – a record his primary opponents
used against him.

Kenneth Wegner, a perennial candidate with some tea party backing,
came in third. Las Vegas businessman Dan Schwartz, who spent much of
his own money on the race, trailed in fourth place.

Tarkanian will compete with Horsford in November.

Although voter registration in the district favors Democrats by 9
points, Republicans hope they will outperform those statistics on
Election Day. The district stretches from urban North Las Vegas –
where Democrats often struggle to get voters to the polls – through the
southern rural counties – where Republicans vote almost religiously.

Tarkanian demonstrated his strength in those counties in his primary
victory. Tarkanian more than doubled Cegavske’s showing in rural
Nevada.

GOVERNMENT WAS ABLE TO KEEP MONOPOLY UNDER CONTROL – DIASPORA-ARMENIAN BUSINESSMAN

news.am
June 12, 2012 | 15:11

YEREVAN. – The Government of Armenia was able to keep watch over
monopoly, Diaspora-Armenian businessman Vahakn Hovnanian said during
a press conference on Tuesday.

In his words, owing to the Government’s control, price speculation
is not noticed in the market, even in the case of the Armenian dram’s
sharp devaluation.

As per Vahakn Hovnanian, the latest fluctuations in the Armenian
national currency’s exchange rate are solely due to the problems
in Europe and the US, and he noted that the US Government likewise
is concerned over the dollar’s gaining value, because the American
businesses are suffering losses abroad.

‘Vietnam Syndrome’ Of Gagik Tsarukyan

‘VIETNAM SYNDROME’ OF GAGIK TSARUKYAN
Haik Aramyan

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 15:02:35 – 12/06/2012

Prior to his departure for Japan and Vietnam Serzh Sargsyan approved
Tigran Sargsyan’s nomination. Earlier the new member of Prosperous
Armenia Party Vartan Oskanian had announced that the parliamentary
election elects a prime minister. According to this idea, PAP would
ensure its presence in parliament and nominate its prime minister
together with the ARF and the ANC.

One can remember the long period of uncertainty following the
parliamentary election. There were suggestions on whether the PAP will
form a coalition or not, or who would form a coalition. However, PAP
refused to form a coalition and announced that the PAP did not agree
to let them form government so let it assume full responsibility alone.

What happened in that mystery period? According to the plan, Serzh
Sargsyan was expected to cede the post of prime minister, thus ceding
the government. But this plan failed, or the ultimatum failed which
was a plan involving the PAP, the ANC and partly the ARF.

Then the ARF announced that there were no common terms for cooperation
with the PAP and the Congress. Recent behavior of the Congress shows
its likelihood to flee from this situation and the PAP and try to
re-justify its outstanding “political plan”. There are no news from
Kocharyan, the only thing known is he is not in Armenia, while Vartan
Oskanian is suspected of money laundering.

In fact, Gagik Tsarukyan has been left alone or he is alone. The
press reported that Tsarukyan went to the U.S. embassy on June 4 when
the U.S. Secretary Hillary Clinton was visiting Armenia. The embassy
awarded representatives of the civil sector and reporters. Tsarukyan
stayed there for some time and left without meeting anyone. Then
he left for the airport to see off Serzh Sargsyan leaving for Japan
and Vietnam, which was explained by his membership of the National
Security Council, and similarly went to meet him on arrival.

Two days before Clinton’s visit the issues seemed settled, and Tigran
Sargsyan was appointed. What happened, what roles were played? One
thing was obvious – Serzh Sargsyan return from Vietnam would be
followed by developments. And they did not wait long. The National
Security Service is investigating the activities of Civilitas
Foundation established by Vartan Oskanian, PAP member of parliament.

Most probably, the PA and Gagik Tsarukyan are going through a period
of the Vietnam syndrome. It is difficult to tell the purpose and
the final result. Will it be retaliation or compulsory peace? PAP’s
recent behavior is vulnerable for such steps. And the main “symptom”
of this behavior was the double life of the party which tried to
pursue several political lines at one time.

In the 21st century politics, especially in one’s own country, likes
and requires a crisp and clear line, transparency of decisions and
accountability. All the forces that ignore these principles and
use guerilla methods eventually end up in a fiasco, losing public
confidence and appearing pinched with the government’s pincers.

This is not Vietnam where the guerilla bands succeeded with the help
of Soviet Russia.

Authorities Fear That Armenian National Congress’ "voice" Will Reach

AUTHORITIES FEAR THAT ARMENIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS’ “VOICE” WILL REACH PACE – ANC COORDINATOR

news.am
June 12, 2012 | 15:01

YEREVAN. – The opposition Armenian National Congress’ (ANC) National
Assembly (NA) Faction leader, ANC Central Office Coordinator Levon
Zurabyan met with NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan and raised the issue of
forming Armenia’s new NA delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of
the Council of Europe (PACE). Zurabyan himself informed this during
a press conference on Tuesday.

In his words, Abrahamyan noted that the old delegation can still
function for six more months following Armenia’s NA elections, which
were held on May 6.

Zurabyan, however, believes that even if the law allows this, NA
chairman should have acted according to logic, that is to say, a new
delegation should have been formed and this would have reflected the
election outcome.

“Not doing this means they are afraid the Congress’ voice will reach
PACE,” added Levon Zurabyan.

Armenian National Congress Committed To Continue Its "Street" Strugg

ARMENIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS COMMITTED TO CONTINUE ITS “STREET” STRUGGLE

arminfo
Monday, June 11, 22:20

The Armenian National Congress, led by the first President of Armenia
Levon Ter-Petrossyan, is committed to continue its “street” struggle.

The next rally of the party will take place June 26 at 07:00 PM.

In a statement released on Monday, the ANC says that Armenia is facing
crucial challenges and internal political shocks.

“The tragic events on the Armenian-Azeri border and in Nagorno-Karabakh
have claimed the lives of our soldiers and have endangered the lives of
the people living in the area. We would like to extend our condolences
to the families of those killed.

Azerbaijan’s sabotage attacks are a kind of a message to Armenia and
the world community that it is ready to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict by means of war. But the main reason for such actions is
Armenia’s current condition: repeated electoral frauds, corrupt
regime, stifled economy, poverty ~V all this is leading the enemy to
believe that it is stronger. There is only one response we can give to
Azerbaijan’s blackmail – lawful and democratic Armenia, where everybody
is equal to the law and where the government is responsible for its
people. Such an Armenia we have been fighting for in the last five
years. All this will come true only if our people supports us and
shows commitment to solve our common problems jointly at the Liberty
Square,” says the ANC.
