"OSCE a Silent Supporter of Azerbaijani Aggression"

“OSCE a Silent Supporter of Azerbaijani Aggression”

January 29 2015

One More Protest Action On 29 January, there is going to be a protest
demonstration in front of the OSCE Office in Yerevan entitled “OSCE is
a Silent Supporter of Azerbaijani Aggression” organized by Karen
Vardanyan, a publicist and news analyst. Answering to Aravot’s
questions as to who will be participating in the protest, why it was
decided to organize now, what it is aimed at, and what they will
achieve through the protest, Karen Vardanyan said that everyone who is
willing to participate will attend the protest. According to him, “The
action was decided to organize now because every day there are
violations of the ceasefire and this structure is not doing its
business. There are also many people accusing the Russian party and
authorities, but for some reason, no one dares to accuse the OSCE. The
protest will join numerous people, citizens, journalists and fighters,
mainly those with national mentality”. To the question – what if there
are clashes, whether there is need for such tension, our interlocutor
answered, “I don’t think there will be pro-Westerners coming against
the OSCE, therefore clashes are excluded. In addition, I will also
invite the police to keep the order. As for the effectiveness, it will
only become clear after the protest”. According to Karen Vardanyan,
“over the years, pertaining to Artsakh problem, we have relied our
hope on a structure, which actually does nothing, it is unable do
anything, and we are standing still, while this will not resolve the
issue”, therefore, he has decided to raise the issue on the agenda and
show the authorities that there is such a public demand, and that it
is also possible to think of other options rather than hang on one
futile and useless structure. And as an example, Karen Vardanyan
recommended to visit the website of the OSCE Office in Yerevan and see
when it was last updated, which is the latest news, which will be the
evidence of their work. To the next question that it is “accepted” to
threaten the political activists with cheap tricks and beat them, so
whether they are not afraid of such things, Karen Vardanyan said, “Why
should I fear; besides, I don’t believe that a person can be beaten
just for no reason. This is not an internal political event and is not
anti-authorities; there will be no calls for changing the regime as I
am not supporting such things, I am not an oppositionist by my views,
I just want to draw the attention of the authorities on this issue. I
do not believe that people can be beaten in our country just for their
political views, if you are talking about beatings for swearing, then
I am strongly against swearing, against personal insults. I have been
working as a journalist and news analyst for 14 years, and during this
period, especially in the recent years, I have also written articles
criticizing the authorities (I am talking about constructive criticism
rather than the abuses) and I do not remember a case when tricks were
used against me”.

Turkey first to be responsible for politicizing Armenian Genocide

Turkey first to be responsible for politicizing Armenian Genocide

21:42 ¢ 29.01.15

Turkey is the first to be responsible for politicizing the issue of
Armenian Genocide, Ruben Safrastyan, Director of the Institute of
Oriental Studies, Armenian National Academy of Sciences (ANAS), told
Tert.am as he commented on Turkish FM Mevlüt ÇavuÃ…?oÄ?lu’s statement
that Armenia and the Armenian lobby have intensified their efforts in
the third countries and do not accept Turkey’s proposals.

`If Turkey had admitted and condemned the Armenian Genocide in due
time, the issue would not have been politicized. Since it has not done
this step so far, the Armenian people, Armenia and Armenians
throughout the world are struggling for recognition and condemnation
of the Armenian Genocide, as well as for restitution. So it is
Turkey’s guilt that the issue has been politicized,’ Mr Safrastyan
said.

Turkey will spare no efforts to distort the facts and have that
atrocity consigned into oblivion, he added.

ARMENIAN ASSEMBLY BOARD CHAIRMAN HIRAIR HOVNANIAN ANNOUNCES $500,000
MATCHING PLEDGE TO BOOST ASSEMBLY OPERATIONS IN CENTENNIAL YEAR

WASHINGTON, DC – As Armenians around the globe begin to commemorate the
100th anniversary of the 1915 Armenian Genocide, the Armenian Assembly of
America will be working in various capacities in the planning, organizing,
and execution of several events across the United States, as well as
working to advance Armenian issues on Capitol Hill. In this context,
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Assembly, Mr. Hirair Hovnanian,
has pledged to match up to $500,000 on all new donations to the Armenian
Assembly of America in 2015.

`Hirair’s dedication, commitment, and ongoing support of the Assembly’s
activities is truly outstanding and will help us further advance our work,
especially in this critically important Centennial year,’ stated Assembly
Executive Director Bryan Ardouny.

In 1997, it was Hirair’s vision and $1 million contribution that led to the
creation of the Armenian National Institute (ANI), which established itself
as a leading Armenian Genocide resource center and affirmation organization
associated with the Assembly. Today, ANI is the premier go-to site for
genocide documentation and research. In 2014 alone the ANI website had over
3 million hits.

The generous pledge of Mr. Hovnanian was announced at the Assembly Kick-Off
Reception in Boca Raton, FL and the Assembly’s annual New Year Gathering in
Los Angeles, CA earlier this month.

Mr. Hovnanian’s matching pledge applies to new members who join the
Assembly and additional sums donated above a current member’s contribution
level. Individuals can join the Assembly online at

Established in 1972, the Armenian Assembly of America is the largest
Washington-based nationwide organization promoting public understanding and
awareness of Armenian issues. The Assembly is a non-partisan, 501(c)(3)
tax-exempt membership organization.

** TOP STORY January 29, 2015
————————————————————
St. Sarkis the Warrior

** Faith of a Soldier
————————————————————
He became a figure of enduring spiritual stature in the Armenian
Church. But he began his sojourn among our people as a stranger. This
Sunday we will honor his memory once more-some 17 centuries after his
death=80’during the Feast of St. Sarkis the Warrior.

Sarkis, or Sergius, was a 4th-century Roman soldier who became a
Christian, and was persecuted for his faith. Fleeing Rome with his son
Mardiros, Sarkis found refuge in Armenia, which at the time had been a
Christian nation for two generations.

Father and son were eventually martyred in Persia. But years later,
their relics were retrieved by St. Mesrob Mashdots, and brought back
to Armenia-where Sarkis has remained a beloved saint, and an inspiring
example of courage and conviction for our people.

It’s noteworthy that St. Sarkis came to our homeland seeking
refuge. What he found in Armenia was a welcoming home, a sanctuary of
safety and acceptance, and a place where his memory would make a
lasting, inspirational impression.

** Preserving the Legacy of Komitas
————————————————————
The recently completed Komitas Museum and Institute was unveiled
earlier today in Yerevan, Armenia. The new facility brings together
the Komitas collections previously housed at the Yeghishe Charents
Literature and Art Museum and the Art Institute of the Armenian
National Academy of Sciences.

Among the items on display are photographs, instruments, documents,
and publications belonging to the great Armenian composer and
musicologist. The center also houses a performance space and offers
resources for scholars.

The Komitas Museum and Institute is located in Yerevan’s Komitas
Park-the burial site of Armenian artists and writers, including
Komitas, Aram Khachaturian, William Saroyan, and Martiros Saryan. It’s
comprised of two structures: one originally designed as a movie
theater by architect Koryun Hakobyan in the Soviet period, the other
created by Arthur Meschian in 2014.

His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All
Armenians; His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of
Cilicia; Armenia’s President Serge Sargsyan, and Nagorno-Karabagh
President Bako Sahakyan were among those taking part in the opening
ceremony on January 29.

Amal Clooney
Amal Clooney and Geoffrey Robertson prepare to argue their case before
the European Court of Human Rights.

** Human Rights and Historic Wrongs
————————————————————
A landmark case involving the denial of the Armenian Genocide and
questions of freedom of expression came before the European Court of
Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg, France, this week.

The case is an appeal of a ruling by the ECHR-described by some as the
`Supreme Court of Europe’-in which the court considered a Swiss law
that made it a crime to publicly deny the Armenian Genocide. In
December 2013, the ECHR ruled that such a law constituted a violation
of free speech, and had to be overturned.

At the time, His Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and
Catholicos of All Armenians, condemned the ruling in letters to Swiss
President Didier Burkhalter; the Rev. Dr. Olav Fykse Tveit, head of
the World Council of Churches; and Bishop Markus Büchel, president of
Switzerland’s Conference of Bishops. The Catholicos encouraged Swiss
authorities to press for an appeal.

Now Switzerland is indeed appealing the verdict, and the outcome of
the trial could have implications for other European nations that have
outlawed genocide denial. An article in Wednesday’s UK Telegraph
covered the case and some of the personalities involved. Click here

scheduled for May 7 to 9-including an ecumenical prayer service at the
National Cathedral, a Pontifical Divine Liturgy, a memorial concert,
and an awards banquet honoring those who helped the survivors. His
Holiness Karekin II, the Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All
Armenians, and His Holiness Aram I, the Catholicos of the Great House
of Cilicia, both will journey to the United States to lead the
Washington commemoration. They will be joined by Armenians from across
the U.S., under the auspices of the Eastern and Western Dioceses, and
the Eastern and Western Prelacies. Click here

FAR
Teachers in Berd, Armenia, learn about `informatics.’

** GTech Trains Teachers in Armenia and Karabagh
————————————————————
This winter, with support from the Fund for Armenian Relief and the
Armenian Education Foundation, GTech held training courses for
teachers in `informatics,’ the science of computer information
systems. More than 40 teachers in Armenia’s Berd region and in
Nagorno-Karabagh benefited from this program and received certificates
of completion.

GTech was established in 2005 by FAR, in partnership with U.S. and
Armenian technology companies, and with strong support from FAR’s
Young Professional alumni community. The goal of the center is to
strengthen the information technology skills of young Armenians and to
expand employment and business opportunities in the region for young
professionals. GTech also helps to bolster development by incubating
new start-up IT businesses.

French president reconfirms his intention to attend centenary of
Armenian genocide in Yerevan

YEREVAN, January 29. / ARKA /. French President Francois Hollande
reconfirmed his intention to visit Armenia to attend a remembrance
ceremony for the centenary of the Armenian genocide to be held in
Yerevan on April 24.

Hollande made the statement on January 28 during an event organized by
the Coordination Council of Armenian Organizations in France (CCAF),
marking the start of activities in that country dedicated to the
centenary of the Armenian Genocide.

Referring to the 1915 genocide, Holland said: “The effort towards the
truth must continue and I am convinced that this centenary year will
see new gestures, new steps on the road to recognition.”

Hollande praised also the role of French Armenians in the development
of the country.

“Today, when our country has become the target of barbarism,
intolerance, hatred and terrorism, you, the Armenians of France,
give us all an example of dignity, which is the subject of our common
pride,” he was quoted as saying by the Armenian ministry of foreign
affairs.

On the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process the French president said his
country will continue its efforts for a peaceful settlement of the
conflict.

The Armenian Genocide was the first genocide of the twentieth century.
According to Armenian and many other historians, up to 1.5 million
Armenians were killed starting in 1915 in a systematic campaign by the
government of Turkey. Turkey has been denying it for decades.

The Armenian genocide was recognized by tens of countries. The first
was Uruguay that did so in 1965. Other nations are Russia, France,
Italy, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, Slovakia, Sweden,
Switzerland, Greece, Cyprus, Lebanon, Canada, Venezuela, Argentina, 42
U.S. states.

It was recognized also by the Vatican, the European Parliament, the
World Council of Churches and other international organizations. -0-

The President of Uruguay, José Mujica, delivered a speech on national
radio and TV on January 27 to commemorate the International Day of
Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, which he described as “a
real affront to humanity,” and used the occasion to remember the
Armenian Genocide,Prensa Armenia repirts.

“We reaffirm our solidarity with the Jewish people. This people
composed an important part in the building of our nation. We do it
with the same respect and bonhomie that deserves every smaller and
larger communities, which form the genesis of our construction,” said
the President.

“We should not forget the genocide, not yet recognized, of the
Armenian people. Uruguay maintains that characteristic of respect and
solidarity towards all,” said Mujica.

At the end of his speech he said “only a fierce and strong education
and training in tolerance can ensure a peaceful coexistence in this
world.”

Last week, Mujica received a delegation of representatives of the
Armenian community and accepted an invitation to join the Committee to
Commemorate the Centennial of the Armenian Genocide as a member of
honor when he leaves the presidency in March this year.

Uruguay, which has a large Armenian community, was the first country
to recognize, in 1965, the genocide against the Armenians perpetrated
by the Turkish state.

Will the lord of underground be released in two days?

January 28 2015

The Ministry of Justice is investigating the substantiations of the

and Nork-Marash Administrative Districts about dismissal of the
petition to extend the custody for two more months for Andranik
Soghoyan, a lord of underground by the name Zap, identified on 28

dismissed the petition of the Ministry of Justice to extend the
custody of A. Soghoyan for two months. And if the Ministry of Justice
does not appeal the verdict within 5 days, Soghoyan will be released
on January 29. An international manhunt was announced for A. Soghoyan.
Charges were brought against his by the Municipal Court in Prague in
compliance with the Criminal Code of the Czech Republic, Article 219
(1) and (2), and Article 235 (1) and was sentenced to 22 years in
