International Touristic Portal Reveals Karabakh’s Attraction

INTERNATIONAL TOURISTIC PORTAL REVEALS KARABAKH’S ATTRACTION

14:08, 10 February, 2015

YEREVAN, FEBRUARY 10, ARMENPRESS. International touristic portals
Wanderlust and MSN have published an article titled “Nagorno-Karabakh:
the Land that doesn’t Exist” dedicated to the exquisite sightseeing of
the Nagorno Karabakh Republic, which are known only to a limited number
of foreigners. As reports “Armenpress”, the author of the article Mark
Stratton states that Nagorno-Karabakh, which perches like a jagged
crown above northern Iran, has become a de facto eastern extension
of Armenia. Nagorno-Karabakh could be the world’s least-known wonder,
Stratton said.

The author states that “Stalin sowed the seeds of conflict in
the region in 1921, pursuing a policy of divide-and-rule to combat
ethnic opposition within the fledgling USSR. He severed predominately
Christian Nagorno-Karabakh from Armenia, and spliced it to the mainly
Muslim Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic.”

“It was from Armenia’s sun-drenched capital, Yerevan, that I made the
330km drive east into Nagorno-Karabakh: the only access corridor. With
me was Armenian guide, Galust Hovsepyan, whose world-weary countenance
belied his encyclopaedic brilliance for history and art.

In Yerevan we visited several poignant reminders of the 1988-94
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, such as the Mother Armenia Military Museum
and Yerablur Cemetery, where 7,000 Armenians are buried from a conflict
that cost 30,000 lives.

>From Yerevan it was a magnificent day’s drive through the cradle of
Christendom to reach Stepanakert, Nagorno-Karabakh’s capital.

Mt Ararat was also annexed in 1921 to pacify Turkey but remains highly
auspicious to Armenians. On its foothills, at Khor Virap Monastery,
I clambered into a coal-black zindan (pit dungeon) where St Gregory
the Illuminator spent 13 miserable years imprisoned before emerging
to convert Armenia to Christianity in AD 301 – making it the world’s
first Christian nation.

It’s also noteworthy that the author highlights: “There’s no obvious
wartime hangover in modern Stepanakert, a vibrantly breezy little
capital that’s been industriously reborn. A youthful population
frequents airy boulevards of boutiques and cafes in a city putting
down roots.”

The author also paid a visit to the Stepanakert Museum, where
“raven-haired museum guide, Gayaneh, was keen to reaffirm the
territory’s Christian heritage, showing me khachkars, medieval memorial
stones finely decorated by geometric patterning reminiscent of Celtic
crosses.”

“When the war started, Gayaneh – then aged two – was evacuated to
Yerevan. “My father was a mathematician and stayed to fight as a tank
driver,” she said. This petite young woman told me she too would
fight for Artsakh. It reminded me of something I’d read by Russian
dissident Andrei Sakharov: ‘For Azerbaijan the issue of Karabakh is
a matter of ambition; for the Armenians of Karabakh, it is a matter
of life or death’,” the author noted.

“Shushi’s restored 19th-century Ghazanchetsots Cathedral highlights
an interesting dichotomy. Nagorno-Karabakh’s reviving self-identity
centres on its Christian heritage yet during Soviet times practising
religion was forbidden so worship dwindled and churches fell into
disrepair.”

He also visited Dadivank monastery, which “touches the very nerve-ends
of Christianity. Dadi, a pupil of St Thaddeus (Jude the Apostle),
is said to have travelled to Armenia two millennia ago, spreading
the gospel. The church was originally built in the fourth century but
rebuilt in medieval times. Its antiquated decor comprises sumptuous
bas-reliefs featuring Jude and archaic Armenian script including a
testament of Queen Arzou-Khatoun bemoaning her sons’ martyrdom to
Turkish invaders.”

“The object of our journey was Tigranakert, a 2,000-year-old city
that may one day be celebrated as an ancient wonder of the world. For
now though, a small museum hosts just a fraction of the treasures
trickling from recent archaeological excavations. These reflect the
power of Armenian king, Tigran the Great, whose once formidable empire
(95-55BC) stretched from the Mediterranean to the Caspian. Marc Anthony
and then seventh-century Arab invaders later occupied Tigranakert
before its descent into obscurity.

“Tigranakert is unknown because there was a Soviet prison here so
it couldn’t be excavated until after the war,” explained Varham,
an onsite archaeologist. Most of the artefacts, coins, weapons and
tools are being catalogued in Yerevan. “The richness of these finds
and this architecture demonstrates that several thousand years ago
this was a major trading city between China and Arabia,” he added.”

Who Benefits From Driving A Wedge Between Armenia And Nagorno Karaba

WHO BENEFITS FROM DRIVING A WEDGE BETWEEN ARMENIA AND NAGORNO KARABAKH? (VIDEO)

12:08 | February 10,2015 | Politics

Nothing can drive a wedge between Armenian and Nagorno Karabakh,
thinks ethnographer Hranush Kharatyan. But we must always remember
who can benefit from such a wedge, “It is beneficial both for the RF
and the old but not favorable neighbors, but in Armenia and Artsakh
it isn’t beneficial for anybody.”

The conversations about driving a wedge seem not to be serious when
the RA and the NKR politicians speak about it, “When they say that
some people are trying to drive a wedge, I think that just those,
who say it, are trying to drive a wedge, as they don’t mention whom
they mean by saying “some people” or how they are doing it. So it
becomes an absurd and meaningless expression.”

After Berdzor events, when the members of the Founding Parliament were
beaten in Artsakh, conversations on this topic have been activated.

The ethnographer says,

“Bako Sahakyan, Serzh Sargsyan, Police Chiefs of Armenia and Artsakh
are the same people with the same views, the same behavior and pass
their tasks to each other like communicating vessels.”

Mrs. Kharatyan notes that the Soviet authorities tried to isolate
Armenia from Artsakh for 70 years. Now the NKR authorities do it.

Especially Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Aghabekyan’s words have
angered her.

Our citizens consider unacceptable all the attempts to drive a wedge
between two Armenian societies.

AGHDZK EXCAVATIONS MAY HELP ARMENIA RISE TO INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL LEVEL – SCHOLAR

14:31 * 10.02.15

The Aghdzk excavations are of exceptional importance for Armenian
identity, Hakob Simonyan, Director of the Research Center for Cultural
and Historical Heritage, told reporters on Tuesday as he spoke of the
excavations at Armenian kings’ tombs in Aghdzk, Aragatsotn region,
Armenia.

The excavations program is being implemented pursuant to the premier’s
instructions.

The Aghdzk tombs have always been the focus of the government’s
attention.

“This program is aimed at uniting the nation.”

This program may acquire international status because this is the
only medieval tomb in the region and can be of great interest to Iraq
and Turkmenistan.

“A museum will be opened here, and territory will be improved to
become one of the most visitable sites,” Mr Simonyan said.

The AMD 50 worth program is to last for three years.

The excavations must be started as soon as possible for delegations
that will arrive in Armenia on April 24 to see the ancient monument.

“CHORRORD ISHKHANUTYUN”: PSYCHOLOGIST OF 102ND RUSSIAN MILITARY BASE IN ARMENIA DISMISSED

by Ashot Safaryan

Tuesday, February 10, 16:21

The psychologist of the 102nd Russian military base in Armenia –
who was responsible for consultation of the manpower in the period
of the Avetisnyans family murder – has been fired, a Yerevan-based
Chorrord Ishkhanutyun newspaper writes.

According to the source, the military base tries not to disclose this
information to avoid another wave of anti-Russian sentiments.

“Investigation is underway in Permyakov’s abandonment of the
post. No one of the responsible officers have been dismissed, only
the psychologist, who had no military rank,” the paper reported.

The 102nd military base press office has neither confirmed nor
disclaimed the reports.

To recall, a soldier of the Russian military base Valery Permyakov is
charged with murder of a family of 7 persons in Gyumri. He is currently
kept at the base under arrest. Earlier, Russia media outlets reported
citing the military registration and enlistment office of the town
of Baley, where Permyakov was born in, that he was suffering from
oligophrenia.

LAKE SEVAN LEVEL INCREASE DYNAMICS EVALUATION IN 2002-2013

17:16 February 09, 2015

Engineer Mechanic Sergey Hajinyan

Since 2008 the process of increasing Lake Sevan level has been
suspended based on different reasons and substantiations.

– Under estimates, a total of 9,325 (5.20 + 4.125) billion cum water
flew into Lake Sevan (746 cm of water level), out of which 2.303
billion cum through “Arpa-Sevan” tunnel.

– A total of 2.067 billion cum water was let out of lake for irrigation
and other purposes (under data by Haypethydromet Service).

– Factually, 4.565 (3.10+1.465) billion cum water was collected in
the lake (365 cm of water level), which is twice as much as the water
volume flown into Lake Sevan through “Arpa-Sevan” tunnel.

– In the first six years, the average level increase of the lake
water was maximum 69 cm, in the second six years – 55 cm.

– In the second six years as compared with the first six years,
1.075 (5.20-4.125) billion cum less water flew into the lake, out
of which 0.519 (1.411-0.892) billion cum through “Arpa-Sevan” tunnel
in 20011-13.

Turkish PM: Ruling party will not give in to "Jewish lobby"

Turkish PM: Ruling party will not give in to “Jewish lobby”
JPOST.com Staff
Feb. 9, 2015

[Summary:Davutoglu says government will not succumb to the Jewish
lobby, the Armenian lobby or the lobby of the Turkish-Greek minority.]

Erdogan holds that Fethullah Gulen, a one-time ally of the Turkish
president who has become his chief rival is behind the plot to
overthrow him. Gulen now lives in self-imposed exile in the United
States.

Erdogan has long said that foreign governments are behind the
conspirators, which he blames for inventing a corruption scandal
against his government in 2013 and wiretapping members of his
government, leaking sensitive information to the press and on YouTube.

The Turkish president has consolidated power, after weakening the
country’s army, which had long been a watchdog against the principles
of the state being compromised.

Two weeks ago, Erdogan said that the Mossad was connected to the
Gulenists, followed by Davutoglu’s comments on Sunday contributing the
alleged plot against the AKP to Jews and other minorities.

In a speech to local lawmakers Sunday, Davotuglu said, “I announce it
from here: We have not and will not succumb to the Jewish lobby, the
Armenian lobby or the Turkish-Greek minority’s lobbies,” the Turkish
daily Hurriyet reported.

“I call out to the parallel lobby that sent them a message: We will
stand before you with dignity no matter where you are; you will be
despicable for the treason you have done to this nation,” Hurriyet
quoted Davutoglu as saying.

Erdogan last month came under fire for his claim that allies of his
arch-foe, Gulen, are linked to Israel’s Mossad.

He had charged that, “The sincere people backing this parallel
structure should see with whom this structure is cooperating
with…shame on them if they still cannot see that this structure is
cooperating with the Mossad.”

“If this is not treason then what is it?”

On Sunday, a Turkish court ordered the arrest of 21 police officers as
part of the investigation into the illegal wiretapping of politicians,
civil servants and businessmen, according to the Dogan News Agency.

Raids began in several cities as prosecutors enforced the court order,
part of Erdogan’s campaign against supporters of Gulen.

Last month, a Turkish court issued an arrest warrant against Gulen on
suspicion of heading up a criminal organization.

Gulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in the US, denies any
involvement in plots against the government.

Ivetta Tonoyan: Fault For Shameful Situation In Country Lies With Au

IVETTA TONOYAN: FAULT FOR SHAMEFUL SITUATION IN COUNTRY LIES WITH AUTHORITIES

Armenia’s political leadership along with all its structures bears
responsibility not only for this specific situation, but also for
uncertainty and injustice in the country, for the shameful economic
situation and emigration, Ivetta Tonoyan, spokeswoman for the leader
of Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) Gagik Tsarukyan, told Aysor.am
when commenting on Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan’s response to the
statement issued by BHK.

She said that in general, one can ask people who bears responsibility
and for what.

“I think the answer is obvious,” I. Tonoyan said.

We would remind you Armenian Prime Minister Hovik Abrahamyan told
Tert.am when speaking about the kidnapping and beating of civil
activist, member of BHK Party’s political council Artak Khachatryan
that the leader of BHK Gagik Tsarukyan “should personally follow the
statement released by the political force; otherwise, we will have
to take the emotional nonsense for a personal opinion”.

“I find the statement by the BHK hastily-made and a gross error,
which is simply unacceptable. I expect Gagik Tsarukyan to personally
follow the statement released by the political force; otherwise, we
will have to take the emotional nonsense for a personal opinion. In
that case, the entire responsibility of possible developments and
exacerbations will lie upon Gagik Tsarukyan in person,” Mr Abrahamyan
said in particular.

The political council of Prosperous Armenia Party earlier issued a
statement in which it proposed discussing the possibility of boycotting
the work of the Armenian parliament until the incident related to the
kidnapping and beating of BHK activist Artak Khachatryan is resolved.

The party said in the statement that consultations with other
parliamentary factions should be held on the issue so as coordinate
the further joint actions.

The political council of BHK said that the civil activist, member
of the party’s political council Artak Khachatryan was abducted and
beaten up for 5 hours.

“We consider it as a cynical challenge to political forces and
society. The responsibility for the incident rests with the political
leadership of the country. We demand that law enforcement bodies
solve as soon as possible this incident as well as other attacks on
political and public figures. Let no one doubt that these cases will
go unpunished. If the law enforcement system does not punish them,
then the people will do it,” the statement notes.

As was reported, Armenia’s Investigative Committee has opened a
criminal case. On the afternoon of February 7, a group of people
used violence to abduct Artak Khachatryan. Investigative and
operational-search are underway to reveal all the circumstances of
the incident.

Artak Khachatryan, an active participant in rallies against the
introduction of the new law on turnover tax, was taken home after he
was beaten up.

A protest took place outside the Armenian government today. Protesters
demanded that those guilty should be found and punished.

Pascal Monnier: Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict Shouldn’t Be Considered In

PASCAL MONNIER: NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT SHOULDN’T BE CONSIDERED INSOLVABLE

Vestnik Kavkaza, Russia
Feb 9 2015

9 February 2015 – 3:28pm

It is important not to consider the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh as
something that will last forever, French Ambassador to Azerbaijan
Pascal Monnier believes.

“There is a saying in French: ‘you don’t need the reason of hope to
be active’. If there is a conflict in Ukraine it doesn’t mean we
have to be completely inactive in Nagorno-Karabakh. My impression
and the will of our government are not linking these two. As soon
as the date is agreed with the parties, the co-chairs will come to
the region. There is a willingness to help and to maintain dialogue
between the parties,” Trend cited him as saying.

According to the diplomat, mediation is neither a tribunal nor a court,
it is a way to use all the techniques available for the diplomats and
experts in confidence building in a conflict resolution in post-crisis
management.

He added that the co-chairs cannot decide for the presidents in terms
of what is acceptable for them, for the people of the region.

“We urge, by all means, both presidents, both countries to start a
dialogue and to avoid any measures which can harm this dialogue,”
Monnier noted.

Armenia is unlikely to be happy with the status quo, according to
the French ambassador.

“As we know, Armenia is occupying a lot of territories, 7 territories,
and also controlling Nagorno-Karabakh. If we look at the economic
situation of Armenia, we don’t have an impression that Armenia is
getting a lot from the situation. I think Armenia would get more
if peace was there. We know that there are three major principles
of resolution: non-use of force, territorial integrity and
self-determination,” said the ambassador, adding that territorial
integrity and self-determination are sometimes contradictory.

Earlier, the deputy chairman of the OSCE PA’s committee on political
affairs and security, the Azerbaijani MP Azay Guliyev, said he plans to
raise the issue of increasing the number of OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs
from three countries – the US, Russia and France – to five, including
Germany and Turkey. Guliyev said he will raise the issue at the winter
session of the OSCE PA, to be held in Vienna.

Monnier believes the co-chairing group is the right body to find
a peaceful, lasting solution to the conflict. “At the same time,
what I think is that any concrete support of any member states is
welcomed that means that the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over
Nagorno-Karabakh is something of concern for all the nations because
it violates stability in the region and it also prevents the economic
integration of the region,” he said, adding that it has a negative
impact on everybody.
