militaire a l’Azerbaïdjan, point.

Samvel Alexanyan Is Big Fish

SAMVEL ALEXANYAN IS BIG FISH
Roza Hovhannisyan

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 11:16:59 – 18/10/2012

In order to keep under control the sphere of pharmaceuticals, the
head of Szni Ltd. Pharmaceutical Company Garnik Sahakyan says, it is
first of all necessary to punish the Republican Member of Parliament
Samvel Alexanyan.

Garnik Sahakyan whose business suffered losses due to the
anti-competitive actions of the Natali Pharm owned by Samvel Alexanyan
told Lragir.am that the head of state has said it is necessary to
catch the big fish. “So I’m pointing out a big one who is a member of
the Republican Party,” says Sahakyan demanding also to strip Alexanyan
of parliamentary immunity since his presence in the parliament is an
evil for the state.

Garnik Sahakyan wonders why the prosecutor filed a motion to strip
Oskanian of immunity, and not Alexanyan who is busy laundering the
public budget. Natali Pharm owned by Alexanyan is one of the main
offenders in state procurement. He says billions are concerned.

The head of Szni Ltd. demands to withdraw permission to Natali Pharm
to participate in state procurement for three years, as well as demand
compensation of damage to his company and to the state budget.

Dwelling on the check of the State Commission for the Protection
of Economic Competition, Garnik Sahakyan says that kickback in
state procurement consists in companies winning tenders without
participation.

Sahakyan says that small companies like Szni never have the possibility
to participate in state tenders. He blames the government and other
control bodies. Natali Pharm dumped prices in all the tenders in
which Szni participated but Samvel Alexanyan has gone away with
that. According to Garnik Sahakyan’s calculations, Natali Pharm
inflicted a damage of 3,450,000 AMD to the state budget. Natali
Pharm was fined 30 million for unfair competition, and 20 million
for dumping.

According to him, this situation occurred in 2000. He says it is
ridiculous to raise this issue on the eve of the presidential elections
since had these phenomena been fought since 2008, they would not be
present now.

By the way, the owner of Szni Company is selling his property and
business with the intention to leave Armenia.

Reaching Out: Armenian Project To Help "Brothers In Syria" To Contin

REACHING OUT: ARMENIAN PROJECT TO HELP “BROTHERS IN SYRIA” TO CONTINUE DESPITE TURKISH AIRSPACE BAN
By Siranuysh Gevorgyan

Armenian organizers of a humanitarian airlift to Syria said on Tuesday
they were determined to continue their efforts to help compatriots in
the embattled Middle Eastern country despite some traffic difficulties
they faced in operating their maiden mission.

Enlarge Photo Vahan Hovhannisyan

The humanitarian aid sent to Syria through the Help Your Brother
program in Armenia was checked in Turkey before the plane was allowed
to proceed to Aleppo, the city where most of Syria’s 80,000-strong
Armenian community is concentrated.

The cargo including 14 tons of food and medicines that had been
collected across Armenia reached Aleppo late on October 15 and will
be distributed among Aleppan Armenians through the Red Crescent and
the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Vahan Hovhannisyan, a leading member of the Armenian Revolutionary
Federation, the party that initiated the movement for helping ethnic
Armenians in Syria, said they had chosen neutral organizations for
the distribution of aid so that neither the Syrian government nor
the rebels accuse the movement of having a bias.

The Air Armenia cargo plane carrying out the flight had to land in
the Turkish city of Erzurum and spend six hours there while Turkish
authorities were inspecting the cargo. A number of international and
local media reported that the aircraft was “grounded” by the Turkish
authorities, but Hovhannisyan says the landing had been planned in
advance and there was nothing “forced” about it.

Turkey, which is having increasingly tense relations with Syria,
banned Syria-bound flights through its airspace on Sunday. They agreed
to allow the plane carrying humanitarian aid from Armenia only on
condition that it lands and undergoes a thorough inspection. Ankara
and its international partners have voiced concerns about possible
arms supplies to Syria, a country currently engulfed in a bloody
internal conflict.

“The inspection in Erzurum was probably the most thorough the world
has ever seen. They took out all boxes, checked the contents of 7,000
of them by hand and also used detection dogs. They had fire engines
and troops on standby in what was a kind of staged display of force,
but we take such things calmly. It was a humanitarian cargo and had
to be allowed to proceed by all laws,” says Hovhannisyan, citing
eyewitness accounts.

The senior Dashnaktsutyun representative says they could announce
that the plane would land in Turkey beforehand, but there was a
“subtle detail” stopping them from doing that.

“A few hours before the flight the Turkish authorities announced
that they banned all flights to Syria through Turkish airspace. If
we made any statement in those conditions, that would certainly have
led to Turkey also applying its ban in our respect. We pretended
that we weren’t aware of anything to make it too late to apply the
ban against us, too,” explains Hovhannisyan.

Meanwhile, the United States has backed Turkey’s decision to ban
Syria-bound planes from flying through its airspace, at the same time
praising Ankara’s “measured and appropriate posture” with regard to
the most recent incident in which the plane from Armenia carrying
humanitarian supplies to Aleppo was checked.

“It [the Armenian flight] was confirmed to be humanitarian supplies,
and they were allowed to go on to Syria,” said Spokesperson for the US
Department of State Victoria Nuland at a press briefing in Washington,
commenting on the development involving the Syria-bound plane carrying
Armenian aid.

The U.S. official added: “We are encouraging all of Syria’s neighbors
to be vigilant with regard to how their airspace is used, particularly
now that we have this concrete example.”

Help Your Brother movement coordinator Lilit Galstyan thinks that
the civil initiative has achieved great success as it has managed to
attract all sections of the Armenian people.

A total of 40 tons of food as well as 30 million drams (about $74,000)
have been collected as part of the initiative. The rest of the aid
will be sent to Aleppo soon. The organizers, however, do not indicate
the exact date of the second airlift. Certain donation pledges have
been made to the project that would help take care of the expenses to
get the aid to Aleppo by air. Galstyan says that the movement will
not stop its work on collecting money and food as they understand
the Syrian conflict “does not have a quick solution.”

Meanwhile, officials at the Syrian Air company said on Tuesday that
in light of the Turkish ban they have rerouted their weekly flights
to Armenia and from now on these flights will be operated via Iraq
and Iran.

Armenia’s national air carrier, Armavia, stopped its regular flights
to Aleppo on September 17.

As Close To Iran As I Will Ever Be

AS CLOSE TO IRAN AS I WILL EVER BE

Payvand
Oct 17 2012
Iran

By Samuel Thrope

Yerevan, Armenia – This is the closest I will ever be. Standing near
the fence that separates Armenia from Iran, just south of the city of
Meghri. On the other side of the border I can see brown hills, and,
in the distance, the Iranian village of Nordooz with its green fields
and blue mosque. I have wanted to visit Iran since I started learning
Persian as a graduate student seven years ago. First interested in
the history of Jews in ancient Iran, I became attracted to modern
Persian and the literature and culture of contemporary Iranian society.

However, close as I am, as an Israeli I am forbidden to enter the
country. After a few minutes of looking longingly across the border,
I turn around and head back to town.

I spent this summer travelling in Armenia and Georgia, its neighbour
to the north, not just to be close to Iran but to become close to
Iranians. Both Caucasian countries have deep historical, cultural
and economic ties with Iran, and are regular destinations for Iranian
tourists, students and businesspeople. In the face of the increasingly
bellicose rhetoric between Israel and Iran, I wanted to take the
pulse-unofficially and unscientifically-of Iranians’ feelings about
Israel. What do they think of Israeli threats to attack Iran’s nuclear
facilities? How much do they know about Israel at all? How would they
respond to meeting me?

I had prepared myself for harsh questioning about Israel’s eagerness
for war, but the opposite was the case. The Iranians I spoke to
were, above all, curious about me, Israel and Judaism. They also
seemed driven by a need to explain how different Iran is from its
portrayal in the media and in politicians’ speeches. For some that
meant getting me to see the underlying unity of Judaism and Islam,
for others the diversity of political opinion in Iranian society,
and others simply the contours of daily life in Tehran.

While I cannot claim that the people I spoke to are representative of
the Iranian population as a whole, I was struck by their shared sense
of urgency to paint a picture of their country beyond the headlines.

One of the encounters that affected me most began in my hostel in
Yerevan. Just a few minutes after I had arrived in the shared dormitory
room, a young man entered. He introduced himself as a student from
Tehran, visiting Armenia to get an American visa-a necessity as the
United States does not have an embassy in Iran.

Hossein, as I will call him, asked me where I was from, and when I
told him, his eyes widened. “You’re from Israel and you’re not afraid
of me?” he asked.

In the time we spent together in Yerevan, Hossein told me about his
university, the devastating effect of the international sanctions on
the economy, his irreligion, and his drive to leave Iran and study
abroad. While his knowledge of Israel was limited, what he did know
surprised me. When another guest at the hostel asked to hear what
Hebrew sounded like, and I obliged, Hossein responded: “Hebrew usually
sounds harsher than that.” I said, “How do you know?” He replied,
“I watch-how do you say it, the Knesset [the Israeli parliament]?-on
satellite TV.”

On our last day together we visited Yerevan’s famous Ararat brandy
factory. As we walked among the oak barrels of aging spirit, I talked
about my fears and frustrations with Israeli politics, especially
the demagoguery that is pushing the country towards war. Hossein
responded with a statement that still rattles me. “In Iran”, he said,
“we never appreciated how good things used to be. We protested and
things only got worse. You have to be thankful for what you have.”

After we had said our goodbyes, I realised that to be thankful in the
way Hossein described leaves no room for the feeling that inspired
me to take my journey: refusing to be satisfied with the portrayal in
Israeli media of Iran and Iranians. Why challenge your own beliefs and
explore when you have resigned yourself to what you know? However,
even in his dismissal of pushing for change, in a way this exchange
with Hossein satisfied my questions.

For an Iranian to express such thoughts to an Israeli implies a level
of trust that would seem impossible if you believe what the newspapers
say. His words convey that there are things we can learn from and
teach each other. It is the beginning of a conversation, not the end.
