Film: Russell Crowe Sees Aussie Success With ‘The Water Diviner’

Russell Crowe Sees Aussie Success With `The Water Diviner’

Russell Crowe’s directorial debut, The Water Diviner, has seen great
success in Crowe’s native homeland of Australia and was named the
country’s top grossing film of 2014, netting $5.6 million at the box
as of December 31, 2014.

It also won several awards at the 4th annual AACTA, or Australian
Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards, including Best Picture,
Best Supporting Actor Yılmaz ErdoÄ?an, and Best Costume Design.

Yet with all of the buzz surrounding The Water Diviner, the U.S. will
see only limited showings starting April 24, 2015.

The historical fictional drama is set in Turkey 1919 during the
aftermath of WWI. Crowe plays Joshua Connor, an Australian farmer who
travels to Turkey upon hearing that his sons were killed during the
fighting at Gallipoli in hopes of bringing their remains back home.

Russell’s character has a knack for finding things throughout the
film, the most obvious being water, but his talents are put to the
test when he finds himself in the war-torn region of Gallipoli in
search of answers regarding the whereabouts of his sons’ remains.

With the help of hotel owner Ayshe (Olga Kurylenko), with whom Connor
forges a romance, and a Turkish officer who is himself a veteran of
the war, Joshua discovers the bodies of two of his sons, with the
possibility that one is still alive after being captured during the
battle.

The film has been hailed as being a fantastic work of historical
fiction, but The Water Diviner has also come under fire from critics
who claim the film is implausible and sentimental.

The ABC (Australian Broadcasting Company) reports that while the film
is doing well in Turkey, even outperforming recently released films
regarding the battle at Gallipoli, Greek and Australian critics alike
have condemned the film, saying it glosses over the Armenian Genocide
and considers it an exercise in myth-making.

But Russell Crowe is certainly no stranger to controversy. As reported
by the Inquisitr The Water Diviner star has ruffled more than a few
feathers with recent remarks that Hollywood actresses need seek
age-appropriate roles if they want to continue to work in the
industry.

This, of course, sparked a flurry of comments and debate about the
unrealistic demographics the industry has regarding movie roles, with
actress Jessica Chastain being quite vocal about her disagreements
regarding Crowe’s comments.

While both the film and its director are busy making waves of
controversy, the numbers don’t lie. The film has achieved much success
worldwide and shows no signs of slowing down.

‘Istanbul’ Mosque Planned In Cuba

‘ISTANBUL’ MOSQUE PLANNED IN CUBA

Saudi Gazette, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Feb 13 2015

ISTANBUL — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan unveiled his
ambitious plan to build a major Ottoman-style mosque in Cuba, saying
it should be similar to a nineteenth century one on the Bosphorus
in Istanbul, the presidency said Thursday. Erdogan acknowledged
after holding talks with Cuban President Raul Castro in Havana that
Cuban officials had appeared to have already made an agreement for
the construction of a mosque in Havana. But Erdogan, who caused
astonishment last year by claiming Muslims discovered the Americas
before Columbus, said Turkey was pressing for an Ottoman-style mosque
in another city in Cuba. “We have told them that we could build a
similar one to Ortakoy Mosque in another city, if you have promised to
others for Havana,” Erdogan said in the communist island, the second
stop of his Latin America tour. The Ortakoy Mosque, designed by the
Balyan family of Armenian architects, was built in 1853 during the
rule of the Ottoman sultan Abdulmecid I. The neo-Baroque edifice is
a familiar sight on the shore near the Bosphorus Bridge.

Relatives Demand Information About Killed Soldiers

RELATIVES DEMAND INFORMATION ABOUT KILLED SOLDIERS

Vestnik Kavkaza, Russia
Feb 13 2015

13 February 2015 – 8:07pm

A group of protesters in Yerevan demanding information about soldiers
killed not in action have had a fight with police near the residence
of President Serzh Sargsyan this week. The mother of one of the dead
soldiers was hospitalized after the incident. Sargsyan’s administration
has been receiving letters from the relatives asking for information
about the soldiers. One of such letters received at the Presidential
Administration on November 27 came from Goar Sargsyan, the mother of
soldier Tigran Oganjanyan, killed by electricity in 2007, Epress.am
reports.

Goar Sargsyan emphasized that parents seeking information had met with
Prime Minister Ovik Abramyan and Prosecutor General Gevorg Kostanyan
and wanted to meet with President Serzh Sargsyan, referring to his
promise to investigate the deaths. The president did not find time
to meet with them personally. In response to the refusal of the
protesters to leave, the police moved people away from the residence.

Goar Sargsyan and her husband Suren Oganjanyan were injured. Raphael
Pogosyan, the head of the rapid reaction section of the Ombudsman’s
Office, was told that demonstrations around the building were
prohibited.

Igran Orukhanyan, spokesman of the Prosperous Armenia Party, said that
the political crisis in Armenia was so grave that President Sargsyan
could not keep his promises.

Arman Musinyan, spokesman of the Armenian National Congress, believes
that Sargsyan is not committed to promises at all. He called the
disappointment of the public unsurprising.

Book Review: ‘The Martyred Armenian Writers 1915-1922’

Book Review: ‘The Martyred Armenian Writers 1915-1922’

The Martyred Armenian Writers 1915-1922: An Anthology
By Herand M. Markarian
Libra-6 Productions, N.Y. (Jan. 2, 2015); 250 pages
ISBN 9780692344767; $20.00

As Armenians around the world prepare to commemorate the Centennial of the
Armenian Genocide, writer and playwright Dr. Herand Markarian has taken on
the ambitious task of memorializing 13 of the most prominent Armenian
writers who were martyred in the genocide, in a new anthology entitled The
Martyred Armenian Writers 1915-1922.
[image: Cover of Markarian’s ‘The Martyred Armenian Writers 1915-1922: An
Anthology’]

Cover of Markarian’s ‘The Martyred Armenian Writers 1915-1922: An Anthology’
Markarian’s anthology, which was published by Libra-6 Productions in New
York earlier this year, begins with an introduction to Armenian history,
with a particular focus on the Armenians of the Ottoman Empire and the
evolution of Ottoman-Armenian literature. Markarian then gives readers a
concise, yet methodical history of the Armenian Genocide through eyewitness
accounts, and a chronology of events during the genocide based on the
memoirs of the Very Rev. Krikoris Balakian. Markarian also dedicates a page
to the different prison sites where Armenian writers and intellectuals from
Constantinople were detained starting on April 24 and later murdered.
The final hours of Taniel Varoujan, Rupen Sevag, and Indra (Dikran
Chrakian) are detailed through excerpts from Micheal Shamdanjian and Ohan
Bedigian, two eyewitnesses to the genocide.
Markarian then provides comprehensive biographies of the 13 martyred
writers–which include Rupen Zartarian, Kegham Parseghian, Yerukhan (Yervant
Srmakeshkanlian), Hrant (Melkon Gurjian), and Taniel Varoujan–and
highlights their literary characteristics and accomplishments.
Perhaps the biggest highlight in Markarian’s anthology is his masterful
translation of the writers’ works. The excerpts are carefully selected and
are wide-ranging in literary style and genre–from plays, (like Smpad
Pyurad’s “The Eagle of Avarayr”) to poems (Siamanto’s “The Dance”) and both
fiction (Krikor Zohrab’s The Burden of Responsibility) and non-fiction
(Hrant’s Lives of Bantookht).
Markarian has done an exceptional job in presenting nearly all facets of
Armenian literature at the time. The translations of the original Armenian
versions are done meticulously, and are vital to the success of this book.
As we approach the 100th anniversary of the night when most of the profiled
writers were arrested and subsequently murdered, Markarian’s book proves to
be a fitting tribute to the martyrs of what is sometimes called our Red
Sunday.
